Caden talks about using the environment itself to reinforce behaviors made difficult by the very environment. How can we teach our dogs to choose working with us over food on the ground or critters to chase?

Please know that I am not shaming you if you had that 1-in-a-million dog! My heart breaks for you! I would like to raise awareness that there needs to be a PROPER assessment first, and whatever "camp" you were raised in, you need to tag in someone from outside your own echo chamber before making the decision to give up on a dog. That is the moral I would my story to teach. And if you're a trainer ... know your limits. Break out of your own echo chamber to keep getting better at everything you do.

Caden and Melanie dig into geeky topics and (Caden's) burning questions in one of my all-time favorite episodes:+ How can dog trainers/dog enthusiasts without a science background judge the quality of a research paper?+ How relevant are studies done on rodents or humans to dog behavior?+ A sidetrack into European animal welfare laws and tool bans around the world.+ ... and a few random science-y questions I've been mulling over in my brain:+ Can a classically conditioned response (such as "drive leaking," for example a police dog vocalizing in anticipation when hearing the siren) be made conscious and then turned into an operant response by means of consequences?+ Are there ever situations where it is a good idea to use "flooding" with a fearful dog? + The difference between flooding and controlled intentional stress inoculation.+ Why it is smart to not only include reward seeking behavior (positive reinforcement) in our dogs' education, but also teach them how to avoid discomfort (negative reinforcement.)Get in touch with Melanie:Website: https://www.caninedecoded.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/caninedecoded/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.melanie.uhdeYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@dr.melanieuhdeResources, podcasts and people mentioned in this episode:Police K9 Radio podcast—link to the episode with Dr. Melanie: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/interview-with-dr-melanie/id1439541675?i=1000710803832The colleague I give a shout out to in this episode is Sharon Carroll in Australia: http://avantidogtraining.com.au/Shoutout to Game's amazing breeders (KNPV kennel van het Merlebosch in the Netherlands): https://www.vanhetmerlebosch.eu/Get in touch with Caden:caden [dot] cristopher [at] gmail [dot] comMy membership program:https://www.patreon.com/adventuredogsSupport my projects:https://adventuredogsanarchy.com/support/Free resources (mostly English):https://www.youtube.com/@adventure-dogshttps://adventuredogsanarchy.com/freestuff/

This (PH) episode is a 2/3 on the canine nerd level scale. Caden talks about an interesting phenomenon he has observed in his students lately: the one-truth myth or the tendency to find a trainer to look up to, and try to do everything exactly the way they do it. What happens if, years later, there's another trainer with a different truth? Caden talks about the difference between an "enriching" and a "fulfilling" life for our dogs ... and how the meaning of each term is ultimately up to us humans, since we can't ask the dogs!Caden's new (begrudging) "learning about methods beyond R+" patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/AdventureDogsSue Alexander's and Laura Harper's year-long Introduction to Professional Dog Training master course: https://thedogtrainerscrucible.thinkific.com/courses/IPDT-Spring-2025Happy training, you all!
Caden and Anna talk about the seminar they met at and how it feels to have financially supported someone we don't politically agree with, but deeply respect as a dog trainer. The broader question becomes: how do we balance spending money on education (or other things), and financially supporting who we (all of us, including you, the listener!) believe most "deserves" or merits our support in terms of purchasing their goods or services. That time was a great one! Thoughts about what anything you could frame as a "breakup" should (in my mind) look like: sad, sure, but also beautiful because we celebrate exploring new adventures, and with lots of appreciation on everyone's side. <3Resources recommended in this episode:https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/That Taylor Swift song:https://youtu.be/4LtQxA_ooLk?si=tQw3lvfe-jE7SiPZGet in touch or work with me: caden [dot] cristopher [at] gmail.comhttps://www.facebook.com/chrissi.schranz/https://www.instagram.com/adogisabondbetweenstrangershttps://www.youtube.com/@adventure-dogsThank you ...Thank you to Lesfm for providing the royalty-free intro and outro music and to Isabelle Grubert for designing the show logo!
