Midnight in the Mountains

On this episode of MITM Laura and Aaron share, Appalachian haint and booger stories from the past.  Stories are shared from the second book of the Foxfire series.  The stories in the book were transcribed just as they were told from the Appalachian people back in the 1960's, these stories can date as far back to the mid 1800's.  These stories all share common threads of paranormal happenings that you hear today.  Stories of ungodly looking boogers (bigfoot), riding in Model T's, a black hairy beast lurking in a bedroom at night and disappearing as a fireball orb through the home and frightening cloaked encounters are retold. Little ghost girls in white, luring phantom baby cries in the woods, a mischievous unseen entity sneaking up on a child and shoving him to the ground, noisy cloaked spirits banging under house porches, are all some of the encounters that are recounted. On this episode of MITM, we welcome Tommy from "Tommy Collum's Let's Get Freaky" Podcast.  Tommy tells us how he grew up in a haunted house which caused a life long questioning into the supernatural.  From a young age he experienced strange activity in his house, ranging from cold spots, footsteps, weird noises, mimics, full bodied apparitions and glowing red eyes.While attending college he shared an apartment with his brother.  He was awoken one night to a shadow figure standing over him, this happened to him two other times in his life.Tommy and Laura discuss some theories of what could be happening in the paranormal and the effects it has while producing a paranormal podcast.Tommy shares some weird happenings after late night podcast recordings, disembodied voices and lights turning off.  Other strange activity has affected the whole family. Family members have heard each others voices and have seen mimics of each other.There are legends of devil dogs in the forest along the red brick path where Tommy goes for walks that she said was a bigfoot.  There was another time that his daughters were riding their bikes and were terrified by a large creature they said was a wolf.  There have been other strange instances that can be tied to the local legend of the devil dog.Later on in the episode, Laura discusses a very ominous part of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania where a large dog figure has been spotted, feelings of dread and being watched; including her own expierences.Laura also discusses a very scary, possible Bigfoot encounter that is known as a bluff charge.Tommy also shares strange UFO sightings, including one he had with his mother in law. On this episode of MITM Laura is joined by Jason from AFK Discussions.  They discuss Laura’s recent trip to Gettysburg and the haunted air bnb she stayed in from the 1700’s. She experienced phantom footsteps, loud banging noises and feelings of being watched.  Jason shares a haunting Appalachian ghost story that happened to his grandmother and great aunt. Something tormented them every night causing them to lose sleep, resulting in them leaving the house.  He also shares stories about spending time in a house, that became very haunted after a member of the household started dabbling in the occult and conjured a dark entity.  Jason recounts his trips to an abandoned town in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.  These trips went so awry that Jason and podcast co-host believe that something followed them home, causing them a series of misfortunate events. On this episode of MITM Laura and Aaron catch up on recent happenings.  They discuss Laura’s recent overnight trip to the haunted Hoover House where some paranormal chaos ensued.  Laura also recaps her trip to the Burn Brae Mansion while comparing notes with another guest of the mansion.  During that trip Laura visits Gettysburg and the historic Jennie Wade House, some history and ghost stories are told.  Then Laura tells Aaron about her recent hiking adventures to a 1700’s abandoned cemetery in the woods where strange shape shifting, animal noises were heard and unsettling energy was felt. Another hiking adventure to an old abandoned copper mine is also talked about and how an eerie silence fell upon the woods, during the hike. On this episode of MITM, Laura sits down with some friends to discuss some strangeness in the woods of Pennsylvania.  Laura’s friend saw what he believes to be a dogman, this lead him down a rabbit hole for years trying to understand what he saw.  Recently he spoke to his dad on the phone and his dad told him about a dogman sighting from the day before. On this episode of MITM Christmas Special Pt. 2 Laura and Aaron continue their discussion on the origins of Christmas.  They jump back in time and cover the evolving deities and devils of the winter season.  Going all the way back to Norse mythology and  Odin's Wild Hunt, the threat of Odin and his heathen followers hunting you down on a cold winter's and taking you back to the underworld if you did not stay indoors.  Laura and Aaaron theorize how Berchta, a beautiful germanic goddess, associated with winter time, could possibly be the origin story of the paranormal entities know as "women in white".  After the Christian church took over they demonized Berchta and turned her into Frau Perchta and she is know for being a horrifying "christmas monster".  Warning of other scary Christmas monsters such as Krampus, Yule Lads, Gryla, the Yule Cat, are told.  There are plenty of dark creatures that lurk in the winter time but there are also deities such as  La Belfana, an italian christmas witch, who flies through the night sky and brings presents for the children and cleans away negativity to allow for a fresh start of the new year.   The story of St. Nicholas is thought to be the origin story of Santa Claus.  Some stories involving miraculous miracles Nicholas preformed, are much darker than one would think.  Last but not least the Belsnickel is discussed, having roots in Germany, extending to Pennsylvania  brought over to America by the Pennsylvania Germans what is now known as Pa Dutch.Please Like, Share, Rate & Review the podcast.Thank you for listening!https://www.instagram.com/midnight_inthemountains/Subscribe on Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/@MidnightInTheMountainsPodcast

On this episode of MITM Laura and Aaron step back in time for MITM Christmas Special Pt. 1.  Winter solstice and the dangerous dark days of the past are discussed.  Laura shares the oldest winter tradition, Yule, dating back before the year 672, was celebrated and started by Norse Pagans in Scandinavia.  The pagans used ancient superstitions to keep their homes and themselves save from the evil spirits of winter, that could result in death.  Winter could be a dark scary time but in order to survive they needed to have hope.  The 21st of December marks the winter solstice, it marks the return of the sun, days start to become longer from this point on.  This was a time to celebrate and be with loved ones.  Burning Yule logs, drinking wassail, telling stories, decorating with evergreens, were all parts of the celebration.      Over in Rome, the Roman Pagans celebrated the ancient tradition of Saturnalia, known to share similarities with Yule, however the Romans got a little crazier than the Scandinavians.  Saturnalia consisted of a week long party, the whole social structure was turned upside down, slaves were treated as equals, a lower member of the family was put in charge for the week and their job was to act foolish.  Drunken celebrations and singing in the streets was all apart of this.  Eventually Christianity took over. These celebrations ended and Christmas began. However Yule is still celebrated today by pagans. There are clear ties to the ancient traditions and the Christmas holiday has adopted parts of it that are still done today.   Aaron shares the evolution of Santa Claus through the years, dating back to the 1800’s. On this episode of MITM, Laura and Aaron step back in time to Mesoamerica. Laura covers the rise of the Aztecs, revealing the harsh reality of how they came to brutally dominate the region with brute force and human sacrifice. Traveling ahead through time, nearly 200 years later, a few factors create the perfect storm that all contribute to the demise of the Aztec Empire. Aaron shares his findings on the discovery of the  “Aztec death whistle” and it’s possible use in rituals that involved human sacrifice to worship the Aztec’s Sun God.Today paranormal investigators are using this “death whistle” as a trigger object by blowing into the whistle that produces an absolutely horrifying sound of a human screaming in extreme pain.
