The eisbock story is a fun lore of beer myth, a hapless brewery employee left a barrel of doppelbock outside during a snowstorm in Germany and some of the beer froze, concentrating flavor and thus creating a whole new beer style. While the roots of this story may not wholly be true, it’s a fun addition to a beer style made by distillation processes at its most base level. These beers are rare in the United States as you need special licenses to make them but in Europe, the rules are a bit different and in some European countries, these beers, not just eisbocks, have taken on a life of their own. And this is before we start talking about other drinks like the amazing ice cider made by freeze distillation. How does the freezing process work and what changes does it make to these drinks? This month on the All About Beer podcast, we talk to three guests with unique views on this chilly process. Visit AllAboutBeer.com for more podcasts, to read original articles, and to get info on upcoming events.Click here to support independent journalism covering the beer industry. This Episode is Sponsored by:HopsteinerThis episode is brought to you by LLZ™ - Hopsteiner’s new water-soluble citrus aroma extract. At its most basic, whiskey is distilled beer.  And yet, beer makers and whiskey makers rarely share information, techniques and ingredients. In recent years, some brewers and whiskey makers are taking inspiration from beer, using craft beer ingredients like specialty malts and different yeast strains, to make more interesting base beer that is then distilled to new styles of beer.  And others are completing the circle by aging whiskey in former beer barrels. This is a dram good episode! This Episode is Sponsored by:Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, where trailblazing runs in the family. Social media is an important part of our lives. We wish people a happy birthday, find out about births or deaths, stay in touch with people, are entertained by hilarious videos and get our opinions out across to everyone (for better or worse). Breweries use social media as well, a sort of visual Yellow Pages to get out their vision, their beers and their events to the masses. But with an everchanging world and social media constantly changing its rules, how do breweries adapt and change? In this episode of the All About Beer podcast, we talk to three guests about how they handle trolls, creating content, and showcasing what their brewery does in a thoughtful way that stays true to their brand values. Pilsner Urquell is one of the most famous beers in the world and many would argue it’s the original golden lager as, after all, “Pilsner Urquell” means Original Pilsner. But what is its origin story, how is it brewed and how has Pilsner Urquell the beer evolved (if at all) from its invention in 1842 in the town of Plzen, Czech Republic? On this episode of the “All About Beer” podcast, we talk to Brewmaster Emeritus and Plzen native Václav Berka about the history of golden lager from the Czech perspective and how Pilsner Urquell conquered the world and brought Czech lager and drinking traditions to mankind. This Episode is Sponsored by:RahrBSGNeed ingredients and supplies that deliver consistent, high-quality beer? Japanese rice lagers are having a moment in the beer industry right now. It feels like nowadays everyone is brewing one and they’ve become a popular part of the golden lager trend. But what goes into making them and what unique ways are people exploring to bring this style to the next level? We’ve also been told that rice is just a cheap adjunct that adds no flavor of consequence but new research suggests that rice is more than it seems. On this episode of the All About Beer podcast, we talk to a brewery owner about new ways to brew Japanese rice lager (foeders?!) and a food scientist who gives us the new facts on rice flavor.
