Salem is certainly full of witches. Some, however, fly above the rest for their influence and impact on the community--Samantha Stevens, Laurie Cabot, BORAH, etc. But have you met the Good Witch of Salem? You've probably seen her waltzing through downtown Salem in her iconic pink ballgown; or perhaps making potions or witch hats with kids at her shop; maybe in the parade or on the trolley. This witch does it all, spreading self-love and joyful energy everywhere she goes. Join Jeffrey and Sarah, your favorite Salem tour guides, for a sit down with the Good Witch herself, Ashley Tina, and learn all about her journey from teacher to innovative entrepreneur and Witch City icon. Where did she come from? How did she become such a staple of Salem? What is our golden heart and how can we discover the magic within ourselves?

Salem has witches, pirates, merchants, and murderers, but soon, Salem may another to the list: Annabelle, one of the most haunted dolls in America. The doll is currently part of the Warren’s Occult Museum, which has recently come under a new custodianship that wants to bring the whole collection to Salem. Join Sarah and Jeffrey, your favorite Salem tour guides, for a chat about the controversy surrounding the "haunted" doll. If a visceral two-hour meeting at City Hall or Reddit and Facebook posts are anything to go by, locals and paranormal investigators alike have strong opinions on the matter and the pot (or maybe cauldron) is well and truly stirred.

The Remonds are by far one of Salem's most famous families. But it may be the youngest daughter, Sarah Parker Remond, who left the greatest impact. Following in her brother's footsteps, Sarah became an anti-slavery activist and lecturer. She toured the country, achieved international success, and earned advanced degrees, all at a time when women (specifically black women) were limited in public discourse. While John and Nancy Remond served dignitaries and presidents at Hamilton Hall, their eldest son became an accomplished author and public speaker. Known for his voice and wit, Charles Lenox Remond was one of the first to speak out against the horrors of slavery. He traveled with William Lloyd Garrison, inspired Fredrick Douglas, recruited for the USCT, and spoke on political stages everywhere from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts. Of all the famous names that have made their imprint on Salem's history, there's perhaps none more renowned and wide-reaching than the Remonds. In fact, one could argue they are the most famous family in Salem's history. Rather than just one man, one merchant, one author, one woodcarver, the Remonds left a multigenerational legacy. Join Jeffrey and Sarah, your favorite Salem tour guides for a chat about John and Nancy, the first Remonds of Salem.

We return to 1692 Salem to talk about another victim of the Salem Witch Trials: Alice Parker. Details of her early life may be scant - maybe even nonexistent - but those superstitious puritans left behind plenty of vivid examinations and testimony for us to sift through. Salem is buried in snow! Or rather - the whole New England region is. We thought it was the perfect time to dig up our Blizzard episode from last year. Stay warm!
-----
New England is known for its unpredictable and unforgiving winter weather. We've seen everything from ice storms to a Snowpocalypse, but few storms have had the impact as the Northeastern Blizzard of 1978. Hurricane force winds, extreme tidal flooding, and over two feet of snow in less than two days. Join Sarah and Jeffrey, your favorite Salem tour guides, as they recap the damage, devastation, and aftermath of this historic storm. You'll hear some light-hearted insights about how Salem State College students weathered the blizzard, as well as some grim details about an oil spill and fatal rescue attempt off Salem's coast.

Join Jeffrey and Sarah, your favorite Salem tour guides, for one final exploration of Essex Street.

We're back for another round of tunnel hunting! Way back in Episode 10, we talked about the legend of smuggling tunnels under Salem and it has been somewhat of a running joke on the Pod ever since. But it's time to revisit these rumors, because historically, there was no network of secret hidden tunnels in Salem. Join Jeffrey and Sarah, your favorite Salem tour guides, as they debunk the persistent claims about these so-called smuggling tunnels. We're also putting our money where our mouths are! If you have actual physical or historical evidence of tunnels in Salem, we are offering a $300 reward. We’re not messing around this time.

Happy Birthday Witch City! Salem was founded in 1626 by Roger Conant which means this year we celebrate 400+ years of history. So how is Salem The Podcast gonna kick off the celebration? Let's turn back the clock by 100 years and see how the people of Salem were celebrating back in 1926! Join Sarah and Jeffrey, your favorite Salem tour guides, as they dive into the monumental week-long extravaganza that was Salem 300. It all kicked off with church bells ringing on the morning of July 4th. What followed was an array of musical performances, parades (yes, plural), warships, bonfires, and visit from the Vice President, and lots and lots of traffic!

Let's return to Essex Street! At the end of part 2, we stopped at the East India Square Fountain, so we will pick up there and wander all the way down to North Street. Today, you'd walk past apartments, Professor Spindlewinks, Count Orlok's, and Rockafellas. But if we could turn the (Almy's) clock back, we would see Almy's department store, flanked by banks, banks, and more banks! Join Jeffrey and Sarah, your favorite Salem tour guides, as they explore more of Essex Street's past. What lay where the Ped Mall is today. And what would you see past Town House Square? Just how many grand theaters used to dot Essex Street? And what does the YMCA and Alexander Graham Bell have in common? Oh, and why on earth does Essex Street have a 4.1 rating on Trip Advisor?

But few compare to “Christmas in Salem.” On the first weekend of every December, Historic Salem Inc. presents a unique experience where we get to tour historic homes decorated for the holiday season. Join Sarah and Jeffrey, your favorite Salem tour guides, as reminisce about the beautiful houses that were on this year's itinerary. Chestnut Street, Broad Street, the Pickering House... does it get much better than that?! Did we have a favorite? Any surprises along the way? Can you go see any of them yourselves? Yes, yes, and yes again!

From award-winning playwright Kimberly Bellflower comes a modern reimagining of Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Set in rural Georgia in 2018; what does high school feminism, mixed with the #MeToo movement, and studying the Salem Witch Trials look like? Join Sarah and Jeffrey, your favorite Salem tour guides, as they read through and reflect on this modern, feminist response to Arthur Miller's interpretation. We found it to be a masterful piece of art that shows just how important and relevant these stories are, especially in today's world.
TW: This episode, and the play, do contain discussions of sexual assault of minors. If you or anyone you know has experienced sexual assault please know you are not alone.

We left off last time with the arrest of Elizabeth Proctor. So now our story continues with the accusations against her, which very quickly spread to her husband, John Proctor. It's no longer just women, it's no longer just Salem, the fear of the Devil has spread. Join Jeffrey and Sarah, your favorite Salem tour guides, as they recap testimony, petitions, and sift through accusations and evidence surrounding the Proctor family. What made John different? What made him stand out? Was it just chance and bad timing, or was it something more?
