Merry Christmas! In this episode the boys have a 'most wonderful time' toasting the festive season with a nice beverage which, naturally enough, has a story to it. They discuss the extraordinary result of a Christmas movie prop selling at auction, and the relative merits of yuletide motion pictures. Is there actually a good one? A seasonal 'Did They Get It Wrong' extended version, in which Alexander tries hopelessly to justify the tenuous links in the objects chosen to Christmas and John shares his opinion on cigars (spoiler - he doesn't like them much). The Antiques Trade Gazette gets a massive amount of product placement (still no endorsement) in a special ATG Pun-Down. And we also find out which sexy man has emptied his sack in a special Christmas auction. Who could it be? All this and more antiques-X-xmas banter between your hosts as they fail to moderate their drinking.Have a Cool Yule, everyone. Here are some links:The Elf costume storyhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8xdv5gzez7oThe Antiques Trade Gazettehttps://www.antiquestradegazette.com/The Collection Obsessionhttps://open.spotify.com/show/54iCDBcPMFafp9ktHEON05?si=a289aa6162f04c0dJohn Rolfe Auctionshttps://johnrolfeauctions.com/catalogue/26c32e5cd5808d5bd4c42250d226437d/d8e98cf48d99e52b6fe3cba0159c428b/gold-frankincense-more/Music CreditsWe Wish You a Merry Christmas by E's Jammy JamsChristmas Chores by RKVCHip Hop Christmas by Twin Musicom (licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Artist: http://www.twinmusicom.org/) Hosted on Acast. Episode 13 of Antiques Anonymous finds Jon and Alexander talking all about provenance. That thing all auctioneers and valuers love, and can make even a modest antique worth millions. Along the way, Alexander fails to remember the naughty bits in James Cameron's Titanic movie, the boys discuss what on Earth goes on in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and yet another sampler makes piles of cash in 'Did They Get It Wrong'. All this and more, plus a little tease for the next episode - the AA Christmas Special. In this spooky episode, Jon and Alexander talk monsters, ghosts and general weirdness in the world of antiques. But we start with a toast to Jon's late father, a larger than life character who will be greatly missed. Then we hear how Alexander was literally confronted with a creature from his nightmares, and the time when Jon attempted to shoot a ghost with a BB gun. And the two try to analyse a bit of video footage seeming to show some poltergeist activity at a saleroom in Royal Wootton Bassett. In a slightly different version of 'Did They Get It Wrong', we hear about two cases from the same auction house of under-valuing and over-valuing (arguably). Heavy on the ASMR, in this episode Jonny and Alexander open a bottle of Rioja and a packet of salt and vinegar crisps while discussing the latest news in the world of antiques. The rambling convo involves Christie's dropping digital art, Sotheby's massive losses and the Thornhill collection's new (temporary) home. Jonny also reveals why he doesn't like Moorcroft or Della Robbia while Alexander tries to disagree agreeably. Alexander reveals what he's been up to in Leeds and Nottingham in the last few weeks. And Jonny remembers how Alexander has a hilarious pet name for his wife.Don't forget to rate and review on your podcast dispenser of choice. To get in touch with the boys, you can do the following:DM them on Instagram @antiquesanonymouspodcastEmail them at antiquesanonymouspod@gmail.comThey'll definitely give you a mention. Jon and Alexander are BACK and finally in double figures! Yes, episode 10 is all about trends (a theme suggested by a lovely listener) from the Hollywood style and how it can be overdone (yes, Mr Trump we're talking to you and what you've done to the oval office) as well as Seiko watches, generation Z, streetwear, urban art, Labubu Monsters and NFTs. There's a return of 'Did They Get It Wrong' and plenty of ASMR as your two hosts slurp beer and wine and munch on Monster Claw snacks in celebration of making it this far. Introduced by the great King Donald 1st of America, Jon and Alexander catch up on what they've been up to for the last seven months and rake over the remnants of what might have been a great show in January, predicting 2025 with laser precision, had the boys actually managed to be professional and coordinate their diaries. They also talk about those companies that thrust grubby pamphlets through your door promising top cash for gold and antiques and making out like selling at auction is a really bad thing. Boooo, how dare they?Don't forget to like, subscribe and write us a review on your podcast app of choice. Back again after another long gap with episode 8 of the Antiques Anonymous podcast. In this episode, Alexander gets a bit serious about stress in the workplace and how important reaching out to a friend can be. We hear why a power cut and a jigsaw puzzle led Alexander to bid live on a coffee table and in their usual 'Did They Get It Wrong' segment, he reveals his dislike of Mickey Mouse (quick and terrible impression alert) and then on to the main topic this time - prints - as suggested by a listener. As they ramble on, Jon comes clean about his art degree and the hosts disagree agreeably in general about various artists including John Piper, L.S.Lowry, Tracy Emin, Albrecht Durer, Kathe Kollwitz, Damien Hurst (ugh) and Banksy. We also get an insight into Alexander's misspent youth 'studying' graffiti art. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The podcast by two guys who are a little bit addicted to antiques. Jon and Alexander are back in the Torpedo Room for another rambling chat, this time about the gradual disappearance of the weekly general auction. Is it on the way out or is there still a future for this time honoured and well loved part of the antiques trade? We hear about what Alexander used to get up to in the back of his Ford Mondeo in the good old days, Jon expresses his dislike of specialist auctions and reveals how he'd do it if he ran his own saleroom, and Alexander risks offending the entire nation of Australia. Plus, your hosts reveal the topic of the next ep. In this episode, Jon and Alexander talk about the many merits and demerits of social media in the antiques world, confess to a little guerilla marketing and give a shout-out to 'rival' podcast The Gavel and the Gabble (hello Harry and Simon!). Also in the rambling Torpedo Room convo, Jon discovers that he just squeaks into Generation X but has no idea what that means, what shabby chic really looks like when you get it home, a little more gentle dunking of the Antiques Roadshow, and why Jon is emphatically not wowed by a crumpled old top hat - and why would he be? All this and more from your favourite antiques anoraks. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This episode, Jon and Alexander ensure they never get booked for any more TV shows by talking candidly about antiques on the telly, revealing some of their own experiences in front of and behind the cameras, as well as their views on whether the television industry has worked for good or ill in the antiques world. They also introduce the new segment 'Did They Get it Wrong?', looking at the Antiques Trade Gazette's now infamous 'Bid Barometer' sidebar and critiquing the results therein. How many more enemies can they make? Don't forget to rate and review the show and/or head over to www.buymeacoffee.com/antiquesanonymous to throw some groats at your hosts. Hosted on Acast. Wanna know what's coming up in the next episode? Well here's a quick teaser for you to whet you're antiques appetite. Jon and Alexander celebrate the purchase of a new microphone and so to break it in they got together to record a little teaser (again) on the theme for episode 5 as well as introduce a new segment. Don't forget to rate and review the pod on your favourite player - it really does help - and if you're feeling extra generous you can support the show by heading over to www.buymeacoffee.com/antiquesanonymous to throw a few groats at us so that we can keep the lights on and the content coming. In the meantime, Jon and Alexander invite you to stand to attention and salute our solitary listener in Peru. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Once again, Alexander and Jonny are broadcasting from the Torpedo Room in a face-to-face pod. In this episode of Antiques Anonymous, Alexander and Jonny have a rambling chat about the world of antiques, not sticking to a theme but letting the conversation go where it will. This includes quite a bit of ivory talk, playing the eBay game 'Spot the Money Launderer', and the worst taxidermy fox Alexander ever saw. After what seems like forever, Alexander and Jonny get together in the Torpedo Room (aka Jonny's place of bizzzzness) to talk about antiques again, this time fulfilling a promise made too long ago for anyone to really care about and discuss how the Internet has made an impact on the industry. We hear about the longest ADSL cable in history, how condition reports were done before email was a thing, the joys of selling to a room full of grumpy dealers who hate live bidding, why shouting 'hello America' during an auction may not be the best idea and what Jonny likes to do with his mouse to wind up auctioneers. Surely not another teaser trailer? Yes. It is. So here Jonny and Alexander are again cueing up the topic for the next episode of Antiques Anonymous which will be . . . [drum roll] . . . The Internet. There's going to be so much to unpack it might be another marathon session - who knows? We certainly don't. So make sure you like and subscribe because you won't want to miss it. OO-RAH! In this episode, the intrepid Antiques Geeks Jonny and Alexander talk about DANGER in the world of antiques and art. They explore the murky world of pre-health and safety objet d'art, and how viewing an auction could be hazardous to life and limb. Well, almost. Alexander recalls a nearly nasty case of longcase clock vs wheelchair, Jonny spends some time playing with chemicals and recounting the tail of the poisonous rabbit. He also reveals a somewhat explosive and potentially lethal skip dive, and talking of explosives, Alexander remembers a colleague's anecdote about the contents of an ammunition box found during a probate valuation. You really don't want to miss this episode. Also, to see the YouTube video Alexander talks about towards the end, you can find it here - and it is definitely worth a look https://youtu.be/nZxLrhtdh_k - enjoy, BOOM! Hosted on Acast. In this inaugural episode of the Antiques Anonymous podcast, Jon and Alexander have a long, rambling convo about the changing relationship between antique dealers and auctioneers. You'll hear why Alexander ended up in Bermuda dressed as a Victorian pottery magnate, and why Jonny will give you a slap if you call something 'vintage'.
