In this solo episode, Mardi Winder takes a closer look at why so many New Year’s resolutions fail and why they can actually leave us feeling more discouraged than motivated. Instead of pushing yourself into another year of unrealistic expectations, she invites you to explore the five big problems with traditional resolutions and what to do differently, especially if you are rebuilding your life after divorce. She shares how resolutions often come from pressure instead of intention, how they focus on perfection rather than progress, and why they rarely consider emotional healing or real-life circumstances. Mardi also shares how resolutions can trigger shame when life gets complicated, and how they sometimes distract us from the deeper work of creating lasting change. Throughout the conversation, she encourages you to move away from “fixing yourself” and toward setting compassionate, meaningful goals that actually support your wellbeing. This episode is about giving yourself permission to choose a gentler, more sustainable approach to growth. You will hear practical ideas for creating direction without the guilt of broken promises, and ways to stay aligned with your values instead of chasing someone else’s version of success.About the Host:Mardi Winder is an ICF and BCC Executive and Leadership Coach, Certified Divorce Transition Coach, Certified Divorce Specialist (CDS®) and a Credentialed Distinguished Mediator in Texas. In this episode, Mardi Winder and Ron Platt explore the essential role of support and resources for individuals and families navigating divorce. The focus centers on the National Association for Single and Divorced Families, co-founded by Ron Platt, which takes a comprehensive approach to supporting not only those currently experiencing divorce but also single parents and anyone transitioning through family change.Drawing from his extensive experience in insurance and real estate, and his personal journey as a foster parent, Ron shares the motivations behind establishing the association. He highlights the gaps he witnessed in the systems designed for families, from the struggles within foster care to the challenges faced by his former business partner in escaping an abusive marriage. This firsthand understanding helped shape a service that strives to make the process of divorce less isolating and overwhelming for everyone involved. The discussion covers a variety of practical resources available through the association, from discounted childcare and mental health support to unique solutions such as child support insurance, a product that helps ensure alimony and child support payments continue even if the payer loses their job involuntarily or becomes disabled. Affordable membership gives individuals the flexibility to choose only the services they need without additional obligation.Throughout the conversation, Ron and Mardi emphasize the importance of advocacy, community, and having a strong foundation during times of transition.About the Guest:Ron Platt is the Co-Founder of the National Association for Single and Divorced Families. In this episode, Mardi Winder sits down with Estefana Johnson, a seasoned mental health clinician and director of clinical training at Arise Alliance Institute, to explore the complex connections between trauma, loss, and the process of healing. Through stories from her own unexpected path into behavioral health and clear explanations, Estefana shares a perspective on trauma that centers on unresolved loss, whether it is the loss of agency, safety, hope, or meaningful relationships.Together, they discuss how trauma manifests when the brain cannot process challenging experiences and how people often find themselves stuck, responding to past pain rather than present reality. Estefana Johnson explains how this can create recurring patterns that shape responses to everyday situations, both at home and at work. She introduces listeners to Critical Memory Integration (CMI), an approach designed to guide individuals beyond managing symptoms toward real resolution by helping them understand the deeper signals their bodies and emotions send, and make sense of experiences that feel overwhelming or inaccessible. The conversation also explores the concept of generational trauma, or as Estefana Johnson prefers, "generational data," and how our bodies can inherit survival adaptations from previous generations. Listeners are encouraged to be compassionate with themselves, seek support when facing discomfort, and realize that the search for clarity and healing begins with honest self-inquiry. Estefana Johnson leaves us with a hopeful message: the power to move forward and heal is within each of us, waiting to be discovered.About the Guest:Estefana Johnson, LCSW, brings over 20 years of experience in trauma and mental health care. She began her career as a Behavioral Health Technician in 2001 and later taught in Japan before moving into roles in residential treatment, medical social work, and clinical leadership. As Director of Clinical Training at ARISE Alliance Institute, she develops and delivers curricula in trauma-focused care and interventions like Critical Memory Integration (CMI™), while also practicing clinically at Lighthouse Psychiatry & TMS in Gilbert, Arizona. Estefana is actively involved in research on therapeutic uses of psychedelics and is passionate about advancing innovative, healing-centered approaches. Today, host Mardi Winder has a fun and uplifting chat with Jenny Elinora, a creative empowerment coach and musician whose work centers on supporting women over 50 as they rediscover their voices and creative aspirations. Jenny shares her personal story of reclaiming creativity late in life, describing how her own divorce became a turning point that led her to publicly embrace singing, songwriting, and the arts for the first time at age thirty-three. She explains how societal expectations and cultural messages often stifle creativity, especially for women, but emphasizes that the impulse to create is innate and can manifest in many forms beyond the traditional arts, whether in entrepreneurship, caregiving, or daily living.Throughout their exchange, Mardi and Jenny touch on the importance of play, joy, and curiosity as doorways to reconnecting with one’s sense of self after significant life shifts, such as divorce. Hey there, and welcome back to The D Shift: Redefining Divorce And Beyond! In this episode, your host Mardi Winder sits down with Charles Jamieson, a seasoned attorney who's spent over 40 years navigating the ups and downs of family and marital law. Based in West Palm Beach, Charles Jamieson isn't only an expert in high-conflict divorce but also specializes in helping individuals protect themselves and their futures through prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. If you think prenups are only for the rich and famous, think again! Mardi and Charlie are here to set the record straight, explaining how modern prenups can be practical, thoughtful, and even empowering for couples at every stage. Charlie gets real about why these agreements matter, especially for second marriages (spoiler alert: divorce rates are higher the second time around), and how tough money conversations upfront can save you years of headaches and a whole lot of cash down the road.Together, they dive into some of the most frequently asked questions, like whether prenups can cover things like child custody, what happens if a big inheritance or lottery win comes along, and what you actually need to bring to your attorney to get the process started. They also explore postnups, why some couples choose them after marriage, and how both types of agreements can fit into bigger conversations around aging, illness, or blending families.About the Guest:Charles D. Jamieson is the founder and driving force behind The Law Firm of Charles D. Jamieson, P.A., with over 40 years of experience in marital and family law. Amanda brings both her personal story and her professional expertise, talking about how early experiences with family loss shaped her outlook and set her on a path to unravel the connection between our minds and bodies. She shares honest reflections about navigating a tough breakup herself, after realizing her relationship wasn’t truly making her happy, even if it looked good from the outside. Amanda encourages listeners to embrace their true selves and reminds everyone that you’re only one thought away from stepping into a new, more confident version of yourself. In this episode, host Mardi Winder welcomes Dr. Robin Buckley, Ph.D., an expert in clinical psychology with a specialty in cognitive behavioral methodology and executive coaching. Together, they explore the power of applying clear, practical strategies and goal-setting to both marriage and divorce. Dr. Robin shares insights from her years of experience, reflecting on the transition from traditional therapy, focused on intervention and healing from past wounds, to her current emphasis on proactive coaching that builds toward a meaningful and intentional future. The discussion unpacks the differences between coaching and therapy, noting that coaching helps clients focus on what they can control in the present to create the future they want. Dr. Robin explains how our brains often become stuck in reactive patterns during the stress of divorce, making logical decision-making difficult. She suggests that by engaging the prefrontal cortex, people can step away from the "fight, flight, or freeze" response and approach divorce with clarity and strategic thinking.A central theme of the conversation is the concept of a "mission statement for divorce." Dr. Robin helps clients articulate what they want life to look like after divorce, whether it involves successful co-parenting, remaining friends, or setting firm boundaries for a clean break. Rather than simply aiming to finalize the legal process, couples are encouraged to envision their goals for their lives beyond the separation. This mission statement serves as a guiding compass throughout the process, helping couples navigate conflict and remain focused on respectful outcomes even in tense moments. The episode also touches on changing trends, with more people, especially in younger generations, seeking collaborative and multidisciplinary approaches to divorce. Dr. Robin shares her excitement about these supportive models, which often include financial advisors, therapists, and legal professionals working as a team. In closing, Dr. Robin introduces her new book, Marriage Incorporated, which brings strategic planning and business principles into the realm of relationships, offering readers practical tools to create stronger foundations and improve communication in both marriage and divorce.About the Guest:Dr. Robin Buckley holds a PhD in clinical psychology with specialized training in cognitive behavioral methodology and executive coaching. Through her data-driven, strategic coaching model, she helps individuals, couples, and organizations achieve personal and professional goals. Her expertise has been featured by Entrepreneur, Chief, Nike, and TED. Today, Mardi Winder welcomes Jenni Rock, an author, speaker, and coach specializing in helping parents recover from toxic co-parenting breakdowns. The discussion focuses on the often-overlooked impact of divorce on children when one parent displays toxic or manipulative behaviors. Drawing from her personal experience, Jenni speaks candidly about the emotional challenges and long-term effects these situations can have on children, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and addressing harmful patterns before they become deeply rooted.Jenni outlines some of the common behaviors parents face in these circumstances, ranging from false allegations to parental alienation and gaslighting, and highlights how children can inadvertently become tools in ongoing conflicts. Throughout the episode, she offers insightful strategies for communication and boundary-setting, advocating for practical approaches such as limited, essential messaging, neutral handovers, and using technology to minimize emotional confrontation.Mardi and Jenni also touch on the delicate balance of honesty and emotional safety when speaking with children affected by conflict and negative influences. Jenni stresses the importance of fostering open dialogue without placing blame, and encouraging children to feel secure sharing their feelings. For parents who have lost access to their children due to toxicity or manipulation, Jenni suggests ways to heal from trauma and stay connected, including keeping a log or email account for messages to be shared later in life.About the Guest:Jenni Rock is a Co-Parenting without Conflict expert with four years of experience. Jenni has been instrumental in helping divorced parents exit toxic relationships and redefine their communication patterns to prioritize the needs of their children. Having gone through a marriage littered with Domestic Abuse, manipulation, gaslighting and coercive behaviour became the norm. Her separation from her ex was very traumatic not only for her but for her son who was age 3 at the time. When Jenni finally instated strong boundaries to protect herself and her son, there was an explosion of abuse which then had to be addressed using Police support and support not only for Jenni but for her son too. Her son became very poorly as a result of the complex PTSD, and Jenni had to contend with trying to work, support her son, and heal herself all at the same time.
