Description
I am Dr. Lynn and welcome to Vision Beyond Sight. Join me each week as I have powerful and inspiring conversations with my guests in the areas of health and wellness, vision care, brain health, education, sports, and psychology. They will share their inspirational stories of healing and life transformation through their treatments and vision expansion.
For more than 45 years as a developmental optometrist, I’ve helped thousands of people transform their lives through vision training and visualization. Now, my passion has shifted from treating patients individually with traditional vision problems to empowering people to utilize their inner vision through visualization. My mission is to inspire and empower millions of people through their vision and visualization skills so that they may see and experience their world through the lens of clarity, courage, and confidence. And with my new way to look at your life through a new “lens”, you will be ready to meet yourself and receive visualizations for miracles to come.
Your vision does not define you...you define your vision. A Vision Beyond Sight.
About Dr. Lynn Hellerstein
A pioneer in vision therapy and developmental optometry, for more than 30 years Dr. Lynn has helped thousands of children and adults improve their vision and transform their lives — at home, in the classroom, and most recently on the playing field. Her breakthrough methods unlock barriers to learning and “rewire” around brain injuries, and vision perception or processing deficits. But you don’t have to have a vision problem to benefit: her brain training strategies may be the missing magic if you’re an athlete trying to nail a tricky shot or stay cool in competition. If it’s a skill you can visualize, Dr. Lynn can help train your eyes — and mind’s eye — on success.
Award-winning author
Dr. Lynn has extensive professional publications to her credit, but witnessing the joy of her patients overcoming a learning barrier or meeting a sports goal put her on a mission: to deliver her methods into a form that could reach a wide audience of parents and educators, to help more kids and more athletes. Her award-winning series, SEE IT. SAY IT. DO IT!®, is the happy result.

Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight sits down with Dr. Aneesh Garg, nationally recognized non-surgical sports medicine physician and two-sport US National Team Physician, to talk about redefining longevity and healing injuries with regenerative medicine and neurostimulation. All of us can get injuries, and whether we take on the football field or the garden, we deserve care like we are athletes. As the lead physician of Dynamic Athlete Clinic, Dr. Garg challenges the archaic method of using steroid injections that only mask symptoms and fast-track patients into surgery. He discussed cutting edge regenerative treatments that actually target the diagnosis and work on the cellular level, such as PRP (platelet-rich plasma), stem cell (including MFAT and BMA), focused shockwave therapy and EMTT (extracorporeal magnetotransduction therapy). The goal is longevity and to “buy back time” by increasing the number of pain-free, active years. Success, according to Dr. Garg, means achieving results in the shortest effective treatment window, rather than dragging out care without much progress.
Dr. Garg also talks about EXOMIND neurostimulation, a kind of transcranial magnetic stimulation that resets the nervous system, improves sleep, reduces anxiety and creates a mental environment that accelerates physical healing and makes you feel “Limitless.” He also touches on their clinic’s pelvic floor treatment program that works for urinary incontinence (in both men and women), performance enhancement and fall/injury prevention. While we now have a number of non-medication, nonsteroidal and non-surgical options available for injuries, Dr. Garg clarifies that not all regenerative treatments are created equal, and he gives research tips and sample questions in finding providers similar to Dynamic Athlete.
Whether you're recovering from injury, managing chronic pain, or simply looking to extend your physical prime, this conversation offers a roadmap to a smarter, more sustainable approach to health and performance.

Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight sits down with Dr. Amy Laster, neuroscientist & Chief Scientific Officer at the Foundation Fighting Blindness that advances cures for retinal diseases, to talk about bridging cutting-edge science with human connection and leading the Foundation Fighting Blindness to accelerate research for rare eye diseases. As a neuroscientist-turned-nonprofit leader, she shares how translating complex science into human impact is advancing treatments – while keeping patients, families, and possibility at the heart of every breakthrough.
Dr. Laster shares her journey from neuroscience into nonprofit leadership, revealing how her “superpower” of big-picture strategic thinking helps drive research forward more efficiently. Together, they unpack what retinal diseases are, the scope of their impact—from rare inherited conditions to age-related macular degeneration—and the innovative therapies offering new hope.
From gene augmentation treatments like Luxturna to emerging clinical trials in retinal cell transplantation, this conversation bridges complex science with real-world impact. You’ll also hear powerful patient stories, including Rebecca Alexander’s experience with Usher syndrome and Lindsey Rambo’s groundbreaking role in early gene therapy trials.

In this heartfelt episode, Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight sits down with David A. Jones, Jr., a leading venture capitalist and a well-respected voice in healthcare business and innovation, for a powerful conversation honoring the legacy of his father, David A. Jones, which includes being editor to his memoir, Always Moving Forward - a book of friends, family and building Humana.
David shares the remarkable story of his father’s journey from poverty to building one of America’s most influential healthcare companies—beginning as the largest nursing home operator in the U.S. and evolving into a major national health insurance provider. Drawing from Always Moving Forward, he reflects on the leadership lessons that shaped his father’s life and career, including the philosophy he carried from his time in the U.S. Navy: “The most important responsibility of a leader is to decide.”
The conversation goes far beyond business. David explores the deep challenges facing today’s end-of-life care system—from fragmented care and the “schlepping” many patients endure between providers, to the urgent need for better coordination, compassionate communication, and more humane approaches.
They discuss the promise of community-based palliative care, the role of physical therapy and musculoskeletal health in preventing decline, and why addressing loneliness, addiction, and holistic wellness must be part of the future of healthcare. Above all, they reflect on what most people truly hope for in their final years: dignity, comfort, and the assurance they are not a burden.
This episode blends personal storytelling, healthcare insight, and timeless wisdom—including touching family memories and reflections on finding joy in music and life’s simple moments.

Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Dr. Katherine Reid, founder of Unblind My Mind, and author, to talk about glutamate hidden in the food supply wreaking havoc on our health. With a daughter in the autism spectrum, Katherine discovered that removing gluten (including MSG) and casein in her food led to positive changes in her daughter’s behavior, language and creativity. She then applied her expertise in biochemistry to study increased glutamate signaling in the body and its connection to chronic inflammations, one of the body’s ways of signaling red fire alert. Learn about Katherine’s struggles for glutamate awareness: against the quality of food available in schools, manufacturers that are not required to disclose glutamate content, the medical community’s shortcomings, and indeed even her daughter who upon her adulthood decided to go back to eating highly processed food (with negative results, as Katherine observed). Find out about the importance of fiber, tips on choosing organic food, and how to quality control your home’s food as detailed in her book, Fat, Stressed and Sick: MSG, Processed Foods and America’s Health Crisis.

Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with K.J. Risley or Kellie, a divorced mom and the author of “Rage & Reps, a 30-Day movement and healing journal for women rebuilding after betrayal,” to talk about helping women use Rage & Reps as a starting point to clear their minds, move their bodies, and rise stronger after betrayal. When Kellie’s ex-husband had an affair, she turned to journaling and movement as an outlet for her rage. While she was a natural when it comes to working out, she discovered that journaling wasn’t as easy or straightforward. As she navigated through her journey, she realized that women who experienced heartbreak and betrayal like her could benefit from a similar program, a healing journal combined with movement (and more!) that provides prompts and routines to help disentangle the confused mind and destress the tense body. And so Rage & Reps was born.
K.J. inspires women who experienced life-altering pain and heartbreak especially those in their midlife. It’s not your fault that you were betrayed. Forgive yourself and be empowered. In your journey forward, you will have to choose your hard: Do you want a pity party or create a life where you can succeed? How do you start perfectly? You don’t. Start simple and start messy. Start releasing that rage and doing those reps, and you’ll surely be on the way to recovery.

Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Ranae Van Roekel, founder of Connecting to Cope, trauma informed coach, justice reform advocate, and caregiver coach, to talk about her journey of healing from being a felon behind bars that led to her passion for justice reform. She shares her story with the hope of helping others heal from their trauma, utilize self-care and coping strategies, and avoid the consequences and impact of unresolved trauma. Ranae is here to make you realize that, “You are not the worst thing you ever did and not the best thing you ever did. You are a culmination of everything you’ve done in your life.”

Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Dr. Lisa Cooney, seasoned psychotherapist, trauma recovery expert, and founder of One Degree Shift Academy, to talk about the human side of therapists and how their own underlying issues can affect their approach to their clients. Lisa found her calling in helping others heal from their traumas through her superpower of bringing the yin and yang to her work: the psychological and physical - but it wasn’t a simple path. Having experienced trauma and abuse at a young age, she was aware of “the invisible cage of abuse” that persists in victims, and the subtle effects of counter-transference where therapists’ own traumas can affect their work. She recognizes the need for integrity and accountability for professionals like her to set boundaries and even decline a client when they are dealing with similar issues. In fact, she even did her own work of seeking help in dealing with her own issues early in her career. Ultimately, Lisa’s goal is to contribute to clients’ willingness to actually change, not just engage. By confronting people’s toxicity, she opened the path for communication and healing. Lisa inspires you to trust yourself and make changes, even just one-degree shifts. Take the next right action every day and you’ll realize that these small steps can end up into huge results.

Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Hannah Walton, vision therapist and intuitive wellness guide, to talk about holistic wellness—exploring the power of slowing down, nourishing the nervous system and reconnecting with our intuitive wisdom as a compass for living with more balance, authenticity, and alignment. She starts with breathwork. Breath is medicine, and it is our anchor to grounding and bridge to our intuition. She teaches us that intuition is not woo-woo - it’s wisdom - so follow it even if it defies logic. Discover our three brains: the head brain, heart brain and gut brain, each with its own intelligence. Find out about heart-brain coherence and how to become heart-led humans. As a vision therapist, Hannah helps build resilience, confidence and trust with our sensory system by integrating holistic wisdom and collaborating with other fields towards total wellness. She reminds us that slowing down is a radical act of self-care, and self-care is ultimately soul care. Be wild. Be brave. Be intuitive.

Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Erica Hornthal, known as “The Therapist That Moves You,” board-certified dance/movement therapist, award-winning author and founder of Chicago Dance Therapy, to talk about dance movement therapy and how it provides structure and space for people to truly listen to their bodies. Movement is life and our movements influence our thoughts, which influence our behavior, which makes us who we are. Somatic therapy teaches us that the body keeps score and remembers specific incidents in our lives that could create perceived threats where there are none. Learn how to widen the window of tolerance towards adjustment, discover the difference between movement that perpetuates trauma versus dispelling and releasing built up energy that improve your well-being. Erica emphasizes the importance of finding stability and safety in your environment while building a diverse movement vocabulary. There is expression and communication beyond words, and dance as a therapeutic modality and artform is one of the keys to unlocking what’s inside you. Remember that we were born movers, not thinkers, so if you want to think differently, you have to move differently.

Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight has an extra special show this week as she speaks with Dr. Robert Sanet, owner and director of the San Diego Center for Vision Care, adjunct associate professor at several colleges of optometry, past president of COVD, and international consultant to hospitals and teaching centers in Spain, Italy and China, to talk about his inspiring life as a lecturer on behavioral optometry, and ultimately, love and humanity. Bob has the rare gift of helping people to feel seen, heard, safe and loved by exposing his struggles and vulnerabilities, starting with his own learning issues growing up that led him to his successful career as a behavioral optometrist, focusing mostly on kids with learning and behavioral problems (like nine-year old Grace who successfully learned to feed herself). Deciding that he “wants to touch a million lives before he dies,” he shifted into becoming a full-time lecturer. By seeing his students as collaborators and people he can equally learn from, he touched the hearts of many doctors and gave them space to speak up about their own flaws, ultimately changing their practice from being diagnosis-focused to patient-focused. Even now when he was already diagnosed of macular degeneration that already left him legally blind and Stage 4 metastatic lung cancer that is incurable, Bob still chooses every day to “live until he dies” and see the world even without the sight and strength he used to have. He wishes that this show will remind you to find your passion and love what you do, whether it’s being a behavioral optometrist or trimming trees (like his happy godson). Get out of your small life that is all about yourself, treasure your pillars of support (like his loving wife Linda), and change other people’s lives for the better. Remember: “The true gift of giving is planting trees under whose shade you’ll never sit.”

She talks about letting go of attachments in her career and even the roles in her family, and embracing these changes with courage, community, love and trust in the divine. She intends to continue in bringing awareness to the power of vision, whether the physical, emotional or spiritual kind. As she undergoes her recertification as a trainor for RIM (Regenerating Images in Memory), she discusses doing RIM personal work that made her realize how overprotectiveness ran in her family, and that it’s more important to be honest, authentic and emotionally healthy especially for her daughters and grandchildren. She also touches on the value of being of service in the community and being grounded in spirituality. Lastly, she invites us all to reflect on what we want to create for our lives by answering a few, simple questions that will allow us to look at ourselves through a fresh, new lens. Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Christine Woodside, writer, historian, editor, professor, and author of the book Going Over the Mountain: One Woman’s Journey from Follower to Solo Hiker and Back. For 20 years Chris has been the editor-in-chief of Appalachia, the country’s longest running mountaineering journal. Chris talks about her wilderness memoir Going Over the Mountain, how outdoor adventure - often alone - makes women stronger, and the ways her outdoor life has made her regular life richer and better. When Chris started hiking with her family as a child, she never stopped. Eventually, she conquered the Appalachian Trail with her husband, hiking an average of 15 miles a day. More than the distance, it’s the lessons that stuck with her during those hot, grueling days and nights she spent crying. “Put aside your emotions and just walk.” After four and a half months, she completed the trail and was never the same as she faced the regular world. She passed on the lessons of resilience in the mountains to her daughters, until later in life she decided to go on hiking alone, discovering new revelations about herself, the gift of time and living fully in a way that works for you and your stage in life. All the inspiration and wisdom she acquired fueled her other passion of writing, which she now shares to other aspiring writers in an annual writing workshop adventure.

Are you Thriving? It’s not about money and material things. Our society has a problem of not knowing what is enough, and we tend to constantly want to compare ourselves to others. Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Jennifer Kushell, global thought leader on youth employment and entrepreneurship, and founder and CEO of Exploring Your Potential (EYP), an edtech company helping schools teach work and life readiness to students, to talk about lifechanging and personalized workforce education for high school and college students through the EYP elearning program. We know that 50% of college students and 75% of high school students graduate feeling unprepared to make career decisions. That’s not a failure of effort—it’s a signal that the system isn’t designed to meet each student where they are. Most schools simply don’t have the time or tools to help students explore their individual interests, strengths, or goals in a meaningful way. But we’re helping educators lean in—creating space for students to reflect, get curious about their future, and begin to shape it with purpose. When students feel seen and supported in that process, they show up differently—with more motivation, clarity, and confidence. That’s the shift we’re working toward. Shouldn’t every student have that chance?
Jennifer also talks about her diagnosis with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and how learning differences can be considered as a strength and even an inspiration for young people to relate and connect with her. She recognizes the epidemic of isolated youth high anxiety and depression, and the need to develop grit. She aims for a global effort to make sure that our youth’s support networks have the right information to make the best decisions in ensuring they feel seen and heard so as to ignite the passion of creating a better world for their generation and beyond.

Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Dr. Robert Lederman, neuro-developmental optometrist and international speaker, to talk about the big impact of vision to learning and why we are still missing it. “We live in the illusion that seeing is easy.” Robert revealed how myopia or nearsightedness has higher incidents in certain populations, questioned why having myopia as a condition is being considered normal when growing up, and provided myopia prevention tips especially for children. He also delved in the wrong expectations set to optometric vision therapy by pointing out the differences between language-based and vision-based learning difficulties, and how 20-20 vision is not a reliable measure to know if you are meeting the visual demands of your life. Functional testing is inadequate, and seeing a developmental optometrist would solve the undiagnosed and untreated visual inefficiencies that are preventing your child (or even you!) from living a full life.
