We are getting to the business end of the Australian Open and Day 8 brought statement wins for the top Men’s seeds with Alcaraz, Zverev and de Minaur winning in emphatic style. Particularly impressive was home hope Alex de Minaur who took out his Roland-Garros conqueror Alexander Bublik in style, winning emphatically 6-4 6-1 6-1. The big question on Australia’s lips is can he do the impossible and take out World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals to make his first slam semi. Also causing a shock in a rematch from last year was Next Gen favourite Learner Tien who bageled Daniil Medvedev as he made it to his first quarter-final and as the youngest since 2015 to do it at Melbourne Park.. On the women’s side Coco Gauff rallied past tricky customer Karolina Muchova to make another quarterfinal in Australia where she will face off against veteran of the game Elina Svitolina who got the better of Mirra Andreeva in the night session, Svitolina has gone 9-0 in 2026 after ending her season following her first round defeat at the US Open last year. It was a scorcher in Melbourne and Tennis Weekly is back to break down one of the most dramatic days of the Australian Open so far. Day 6 in Melbourne didn’t disappoint with Carlos Alcaraz entertaining the crowds with magician in the making Coretin Moutet and Daniil Medvedev becoming the first player this year to win from 2 sets to 0 down to set up a mouthwatering rematch against his 2025 conqueror Learner Tien. Aussie home hope Alex de Minaur continued to impress as he took out Frances Tiafoe in the night session but will face a tougher test against in the battle of the Alexanders when he plays Bublik in Round 4. On the women’s side Iva Jovic got the biggest win of her career when she took out Jasmine Paolini to make her first fourth round and fellow teenagers Mirra Andreeva and Victoria Mboko will join her in the second week in Melbourne. Trying to stop the rise of the teenager will be Aryan Sabalenka who faces Mboko in a mouthwatering clash of experience vs youth. She had a tough time against Potopova but survived in two tight tiebreak sets to progress. Also less than convincing was Coco Gauff who rallied to defeat countrywoman Hailey Baptiste in three sets. Also on the discussion table are the soaring temperatures expected in Australia on Saturday and the change in schedule to move matches forward. Australian Open Day 3 served up a little bit of everything in Melbourne Park with champions cruising, favourites wobbling, bold fashion statements (Osaka!) and a few emotional goodbyes. That’s a wrap on the ATP 2025 season! Jannik Sinner defends his ATP Finals singles title as Carlos Alcaraz does enough to secure the Year End No.1 ranking for the second time. In a dramatic final week of ATP Tour action that saw Novak Djokovic pull out at the last minute and the No.1 ranking decided it was the same result as Sinner capped a stellar season by winning once again in Turin. It was the most watched tennis match in Italian history and the historic result could only have been topped if he had sealed the No.1 ranking as well. What a dramatic day for the WTA and ATP tour as Novak Djokovic sent the ATP Finals into chaos when he both won a title and then withdrew immediately from the ATP Finals on the eve of the tournament allowing beaten finalist Lorenzo Musetti to make his first ever trip to the year ending championships on home soil in Turin. The result also means that Felix Auger Alliasime will be making his second ATP Finals appearance and will be seeking to continue his good run of form. All eyes will be on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as they battle it out to be the Year End World No.1 and the odds are stacked in Alcaraz’ favour with just three wins required to prevent Sinner from finishing the year on top. On the WTA Tour it was just as dramatic as the last player to qualify 2022 Wimbledon Champion Elena Rybakina defeated World Number 1 Aryna Sabalenka to take home the WTA FInals Trophy. Rybakina went undefeated at the finals beating Swiatek, Sabalenka and Anisimova as well as Pegula on her way to the title. Jannik Sinner is back at No.1 after lifting the title in Paris for the first time. He surpasses Carlos Alcaraz for at least a week as the battle to be the year end No.1 heats up ahead of the ATP Finals. Sinner overcame  Felix Auger Aliassime in the final to win his first Masters 1000 of the year but it will be a tall order if he is to retain the number 1 ranking from Alcaraz in Turin. Elsewhere the WTA Finals have kicked off and it has been full of surprises with Iga Swiatek going down to Rybakina, winning just 1 game in the final two sets. Defending Champion Coco Gauff looked out of sorts as she was defeated by friend and countrywoman Jessica Pegula in three sets after making 75 unforced errors and 17 double faults. Can she turn it around and make the semifinals? Madison Keys was eliminated after losing both of her matches and it will be a shootout between Anisimova and Swiatek to make the semis. There was joy for Victoria Mboko who won her second WTA title of the year after a difficult few months following her victory at home in Canada. Mboko will finish the year in the top 10 and will be a big name to watch in 2026.
