Description
This is Paula (alias Mause) and this podcast essentially serves as an outlet for my thoughts on music, media and art - before I embarrass myself in a university seminar instead.
I will talk about anything that sparks my interest, including but not limited to: whatever I learn at/for uni and what I struggle with, commentary on music I’ve been listening to, occasional opinions on art and lots of analysis on things that mean a lot to me (video game, film and anime music but also mainly Princess Tutu). Sometimes I will drop personal stories but I will try to keep that to a minimum.
If this sounds like something you would enjoy, why not stick around to listen to a few episodes and see where we go from here?
Either way, I hope you have a great day!

hello dear listeners,
here I am with another YuGiOh episode that no one cares about but I am obsessed with this franchchise and how the scoring works and since I did an episode exactly like this for 5Ds, I felt like I had to do it for the original seasons, Duel Monsters, as well. (Also it's such a fun pastime)
Again, since I talk about a LOT of music examples, I have some links to the Japanese score tracks mentioned, hopefully in order of mention:
1) "Bonding"
2) "Burning Emotions" (seriously please listen to this it's so good I adore this track so much!)
3) "Bond of Friendship"
4) "Duel of Friendship" (fun duel track!!! love the bongos here Shinkichi Mitsumune was COOKING!)
5) "Duel Ring 1" (Sorry the audio quality is complete ahh)
6) "Jonouchi's Theme"
I hope you're having fun following me hyper fixate on this franchise about silly people playing silly trading card games for another five to ten years probably. Leave a rating on your preferred podcast listening platform, if you do!

hello dear listeners,
during a period of sickness (I had a nasty cold that wouldn't go away) I first watched Kuragehime/Princess Jellyfish and liked it so much that last week I started and finished the manga. I came to notice that it touched me in such profound ways, that I really wanted to talk about it and since I haven't uploaded an episode in a while, here we are.
In this little think piece I want to examine what I got from the story under three categories, that all resonated very personally with me but that I also found to just be really fun in general: the beauty of obsessing over something, how fashion can transform people and the romance within the story (it is a josei after all).
I also used the opportunity to test my new microphone! It is a little weird, I must admit. I am still getting used to it, so please bear with me.
that being said, i hope you enjoy this episode and maybe check out Princess Jellyfish yourself, if you haven't. It's tooth-rottingly sweet.
greeting!

hello dear listeners,
it has been a while since my last episode but I wanted to talk to you about a little phenomenon I was thinking about when watching three movies in a week in January: The Boy and the Heron, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya and Porco Rosso and it is something they all have in common, which is that they find elaborate, fantastical ways to express very common themes and emotions. Emotions that are so common in fact, that technically everyone should be able to relate to them one way or another.
I hope you enjoy this episode, even if it is not as clear perhaps what I mean. I am always super curious to hear what you guys think about these movies, so if you've seen even one of them, tell me about what you think!
anyways! Thank you so much for listening.

hello dear listeners,
today I bring you: is the One Piece live action adaptation good? Certainly a subjective question but after a history of commonly disliked Netflix adaptations of beloved anime, One Piece is the thing that comes closest to a success. Statistically speaking, there is no doubt about it. But what do I personally think? What, in my eyes, makes a good live action adaptation?
I compare OPLA with the Netflix adaptation of Cowboy Bebop that I (and a majority of the internet) enjoyed a great deal less. Plus, I give you my favorite moments and little details of Netflix' interpretation of the East Blue Saga - one of my favorite pieces of media, period.
I hope you enjoy! thank you so much for listening.

hello dear listeners,
after a few months of hiatus I am back to nerd out about YuGiOh 5Ds, once again. Upon my second rewatch I noticed a few things in terms of censorship and tone shifts. This is the firsst case I have come across where a regional dubbing and censorship thing lead to a completely new instrumental score which has an interesting effect on subtext and ambiance and I wanted to share my thoughts on this. Also I fangirl too hard, as per usual.
For illustrative purposes (and since I am hilariously bad at describing music for a musicology student) I have here a few links to tracks I am talking about.
First and foremost, since the American Dub Score was never officially released, I cannot redirect you to specific tracks BUT I can give you this nicely filtered track that I am 99% sure plays in EP3 of the dub, at the beginning of the duel between Officer Trudge and Yusei that I describe in the episode. A majority of the duels sound about the same.
Here's the link: Unreleased, Filtered Dub Duel Track
Next, here's a general comparison between what I call Dub-Yusei's "Summoning Jingle" and what I consider his main synchro-summoning theme in the original Japanese dub: "Yusei Theme" ("遊星テーマ")
Now there's the other Japanese Dub Tracks I talk about in the episode.
First, in Ruka/Luna's battle against the Psychoanalytic:
1) "Incident" ("事件")
2) "Unrest" ("不穏")
3) "Psychological Warfare" ("心理戦")
4) Ruka/Luna Duel Theme
Second, the track I described that plays when Dark Signer-Carly enters the scene before her duel against Jack:
"Destiny" ("運命")
And last, but definitely not least, the Masaaki Endoh song that plays in the Japanese dub when Yusei summons Shooting Star Dragon for the first time (it's a fan favorite, for a reason):
Masaaki Endoh - Clear Mind
I hope this is even remotely interesting to listen to. I could think about this for hours and hours it's so fun to me how soundtracks work. My hobby-musicologist heart is beating fast right now.
anyways, thank you so much for listening!

hello dear listeners,
this episode is going live with a delay of a couple months actually. I didn't get around to uploading it sooner but I did not want to miss it after all. In this one I talk about just a couple things that I did, watched and listened to in the first few month of 2023.
Disclaimer: The audio quality of this is weird, I will try to look into mixing and mastering the next episodes more. I'm still playing around with software and editing styles etc. which is sadly just gonna be part of this podcast. I hope it's bearable. Also, I was sick recording this episode, so please also bear with the occasional sniffle.
that being said: I will hopefully not let you wait too long until the next episode. I do have some things in mind but I won't spoil.
thank you for listening!

Hello dear listeners,
to everyone who has been here before: this is my attempt at re-launching this podcast and opening my concept to make it less stressful for me. The concept is still the same but I will actually try and follow through with covering only things that interest me :). Wish me luck!
to everyone who is new: My name is Paula (or Mausey, whatever you prefer) and this is a place for me to ramble about the things I enjoy, be it music, art exhibits I enjoyed, movies I watched, shows that inspire me... you name it. Deeply nerdy, deeply random, unapologetically obsessed with unorthodox obsessions like that anime from 2008 for kids about a nuclear catastrophe, psychic cults and card games on motorcycles... I may be cringe, but alas, I am free.
If that is something that sounds interesting to you, feel free to subscribe and you will get regular episodes of me assigning exorbitant value to things that seem superficial, completely subjectively but hopefully relatable.
thank you so much for listening!
love
Paula/Mausey!
Hello dear listeners,
todays episode is a little different from earlier ones. I have been a little uninspired when it comes to music analysis, so today we have a little more personal and cultural endeavor. This episode will be all about expressing internal emotions like frustration and anger through music genres in the realms of punk, rock, metal and the like and my two cents on how I fit into the movement.
This sounds a little more like a prep talk by and to myself than anything else but that might be because that's what it is. Still I thought it held some substance to it and thus decided to upload it.
Future topics within the realms of this subject: Nana and punk culture. Because I think it is quite interesting which kinds of connections the show makes to the Sex Pistols and especially Sid and Nancy (which I view critically) but more on that in another episode.
I hope, despite of its messiness, this episode is still a fun listen.
thanks for sticking around
mause!
Hello, dear listeners!
This episode is a little different from the previous ones. For this segment I am giving you a little history lesson about the first German Republic in the context of crime-tv-show Babylon Berlin. I am a little nervous in uploading this since I am not the most well versed when it comes to historical facts and also this episode is a lot darker than the previous ones, so listen to your gut whether this is something you'd be interested in.
We examine a little of the culture in 1920s Germany and later look at two very distinguished scenes of Babylon Berlin and the two musical pieces that play during these scenes. I notices during recording that not only are both those scenes key scenes of the show but also do they carry a deeper understanding of their subjects through the songs that play, aside from all the visual cues the spectators get. It's a subject of duality, darker tones hidden beneath a glamorous surface and a message of: "If you want to do something, do it now. Because tomorrow it might be too late already."
I hope I make myself clear here and that my conclusions can be followed. I recommend watching Babylon Berlin if you are a fan of historical dramas and/or crime shows. Because this show is extra-ordinarilly good at being both simultaneously.
that being said, thank you for listening. You will most likely hear from me in two weeks.
until then
mause!
Hello dear listeners,
thank you so much for the positive feedback on the episodes so far! Really makes me motivated to continue with this for now and today I bring to you the first part of a probably long-running series on the music of Princess Tutu, my favorite show, as I have teased for a while. I thought it appropriate to start this with an introduction to my relationship to the show and why I love it so much along with a small look into the musical character themes (which I will cover in detail in the future).
I also advise, though not necessary to understand these segments, to listen to the music I am talking about, just because it is really beautiful. But you don't have to in order to understand this series.
Though I HEAVILY advise to watch Princess Tutu before you listen to this, if it strikes you as something you would enjoy. Because rest assured, it is of course best enjoyed if you go in 100% blind.
That being said, to everyone who will listen to this: I hope you enjoy my analyses and interpretations and fun-fact rambles. I am very excited about this mini-series specifically.
much love
mause!
Hello dear listeners,
this week I am bringing you a short talk on self-critique and -doubt. The day before recording this episode I realized how I stress myself about personal failures (much more than academic) and also that I am afraid of people thinking the things I do and am interested in are stupid, for no reason at all.
And in the spirit of me and my stupid interests: For a majority of this episode we will be talking about the music of YuGiOh 5Ds and how it elevates generic soundtracks into interesting pieces of music using synths, waltzes, violins and electric guitars. I hope this is interesting even without having seen the show but I think it's worth giving it a shot.
so thank you for listening! I hope you're still enjoying it, and make sure to rate or review this podcast and let me know of any things you would like to hear me talk about.<3
love,
mause!
In case you want to listen to the pieces I am talking about, check YouTube for these tracks (in order of appearance). I really strongly advise you to listen to these before hearing me talk about the tracks, they're fun and short and it's cool to make your own impressions before hearing mine, and also it makes for the best podcast experience, because half of musicology is actually listening to the music you're learning about:
YuGiOh 5Ds OST:
24 ジャックバトル - Jack Battle
1 21 一件落着(A)- Case closed / case being settled ( A ) (scify-ping-pong-ball-track)
1 23 喜び - Joy (this is such a cute little track i love the jazzy piano it sounds like a wii theme song!!!)
1 17 作戦 - Strategy
2 11 セレモニー - Ceremony (the waltz)
05 不動遊星 - Fudo Yusei
19 遊星バトル - Yusei Battle
2 07 遊星テーマ - Yusei Theme - (what I call "Summoning Theme")
In this first episode of this podcast I introduce myself and talk about what has brought me to this podcast: How I got introduced to classical music, my long amateur ballet-career and my honeymoon-phased relationship to musicology.
