Not all leaders in the legal profession are found in high-ranking positions on Bay Street or the Supreme Court of Canada. Some leaders, like Douglas Judson and Heather Donkers, can be found in law schools or as junior councillors in small towns in Ontario. Despite their current positions, these leaders and influencers have a promising future ahead of them. In this episode of Of Counsel, we interview a former and present president of the Law Students' Society of Ontario. While they may not be well-known to senior lawyers, they have made significant contributions in advancing the interests of law students and recent members of the legal profession. During the interview, Heather and Douglas discuss what it's like to be a newly licensed lawyer or law student in 2019 and how much the legal profession has changed in the past 20, 10, and even 5 years. This is an important listen for any lawyer who wants to understand the challenges faced by recent calls and the sense of abandonment and hopelessness that some may feel as they enter the profession. With the upcoming Bencher election, it's more critical than ever to listen to their voices and understand why we need to change as a profession to save it. In the course of practicing for over 40 years, Donald Bayne has entrenched himself as one of the best criminal defence lawyers Canada has ever known. Despite this, his humility, compassion for human suffering, and pursuit of justice is as vibrant as it was when he first became a lawyer. Don's remarkable journey in his pursuit of justice takes us from a farm on the prairies, to varsity football fields, to travelling with the KGB in the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War. His past cases are some of Canada's most well known and include acting as defence counsel for Senator Mike Duffy, acting for the coroner in the Ashley Smith Inquiry, and more recently his endless efforts opposing, and now correcting what seems a clear error and injustice, of his client Hassan Diab's extradition from Canada. The release of this particular episode comes at a time when Canadian extradition laws are the topic of worldwide media after the recent arrest of Meng Wanzhou of Huawei as she awaits for a bail hearing and likely deportation to the United States on allegations of US Iran sanction violations.  Ep.#32: Donald Bayne: the threat against the rule of law.
