Description

Hosts screenwriter Joshua Rigdon and author Ryan Cipriani take a sardonic but lively look at some of the most forgettable movies of the last decades in this film critique podcast devoted to the forgotten "mid" movie. Not good movies, not bad movies just... fine movies. Each week, Josh and Ryan humorously pick apart a cinematic offering that never quite arrived and discuss why. You'll learn about film story structure, financial constraints, bland writing, and middling performances on each adventure through a movie you likely forgot ever existed in the first place.

Nope, sorry, listeners, it's not THAT Lord of the Rings... it's the other Lord of the Rings. Oh, you didn't know there was another Lord of the Rings? From the 1970s? Well, come into our Hobbit hole and lend an ear! J.R.R. Tolkien did a lot of things brilliantly, naming the homes of Hobbits 'holes' was not one of them. Moving on. This week on The CineMeh Podcast, Josh and Ryan take on the rotoscoped animated classic The Lord of the Rings as presented by Ralph Bakshi, the godfather of adult animation. And that's important, because this is one weird cartoon. We'll go into the actual animation process, why this film remains a 'must see' for fans of the later productions, and how its enduring influence has given us the beloved Peter Jackson versions we know today. At once far ahead of its time and delightfully anachronistic, this is one of those forgotten time pieces that deserves a nod, but maybe not much more than a nod. For fans of the books, fans of cinema, fans of animation, and fans of unbelievably weird things, this movie has something for almost everyone! The Lord of the Rings was released in 1978 and stars the voice talents of John Hurt, Anthony Daniels, and William Squire The CineMEH Podcast is a Slyjack Media, LLC production Like what you hear? S4E7 - Legion

S4E7 - Legion

2024-04-2501:04:09

When the skies are filling with black, apocalyptic clouds and locusts, what do you do? Well, if you're Jeep Hanson in 2010's dark modern fantasy Legion, you stare at it blankly for a moment before casually going back to whatever you were doing before and telling absolutely no one. This week on The CineMeh Podcast, Josh and Ryan puzzle their way through an astonishingly inept tale of good versus evil, angels versus demons, the end of the world as we know it if not for the coming of a second christ child, and what happens when you put Paul Bettany into a movie that badly... BADLY wants to be Terminator. Come for the dogmatic discussion, stay for the absolute absurdity of writing, clunkiness of dialogue, and derivative nature of almost every single move this film makes. With a cast that can be enthusiastically described as B-, except for a few standouts like Vision and Lt. Tuck Pendleton (that's right 80's fans, that's an Innerspace reference!) and a writing team that clearly wanted to be making a different movie, Legion aims to please no one and succeeds. Legion was released in 2010 and stars Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid, Adrianne Palicki, Tyrese Gibson, Kevin Durand, and I guess kinda Lucas Black, but he's not really sure most of the movie if he should be acting or just staring at things. S4E6- Rat Race

S4E6- Rat Race

2024-04-1901:13:28

Life is nothing but a slap in the face, so goes the song. So goes the race. The rat race, that is to say. As in the 2001 ensemble slapstick comedy loosely based on a 1963 ensemble slapstick comedy, Rat Race. Except Rat Race isn't almost four hours long. And yet, somehow, it's still far too long. This week on The CineMEH Podcast, Josh and Ryan are discussing the nuances of this blistering critique of the ultra-wealthy one percent and the twisted, sadistic ways they play with regular people's lives. We also chat about where the heck are Amy Smart and Breckin Meyer, whose stars were on the rise when they made this film but have since flamed out. The candle that burns twice as bright truly burns half as long. Join us for a conversation about how the first act of Rat Race is a master class in character introduction, followed by nearly two more hours of non-sequitur scenes that have absolutely nothing to do with advancing the plot or moving characters along an arc. It's just a movie full of scenes. That's it. And, if your bingo card has "Ryan defends Top Gun again and Josh rages at him for it," mark your board because we've got a doozy at the end of this episode! In a surprisingly nuanced chat considering the subject matter in question, this week's episode of CineMeh will have you chasing the cheese and tucking the taters. Rat Race was released in 2001 and stars Breckin Meyer, Cuba Gooding Jr, Whoopi Goldberg, Amy Smart, Seth Green, Jon Lovitz, Kathy Najimi, John Cleese and Rowan Atkinson. Were you looking to see a film adaptation of the previously unreleased, unannounced, and undeveloped Assassin's Creed: Viva Le France?! Then you've come to the right place, because this week, we've got a high-flying clock punk classic for you on our hands! On this episode of The CineMEH Podcast, Josh and Ryan cover the 2011 interpretation of The Three Musketeers helmed by acclaimed video game director Paul WS Anderson. Yes, that's right, video game nerds, that was an Aklaim joke. Also, despite the heavily video game influenced introduction, rest assured this movie has absolutely nothing to do with video games. It has ven less to do with Alexandre Dumas's classic work. In a spiraling, death-defying "tribute" to the original text, we'll take you to the soaring heights and abysmal lows of this unbelievably strange take on swordplay, gunslinging, romance and adventure. Every wonder what Leelo from 'The Fifth Element' got up to after her date with destiny? This movie attempts to answer that question. Not really. But that's Ryan's theory, anyway. Come along for the ride as we swing from chandelier to chandelier and try and make sense of this hamfisted attempt to invent a new action-adventure franchise in the wake of Pirates of the Caribbean leaving the screens. Yes. Wake. Like a ship's wake. Ships. Pirates. Get it? I promise you, this is the best the humor gets considering how much of a tragic misfire this movie is. Yes. Misfire. As in musket. I'll stop now. The Three Musketeers was released in 2011 and stars Orlando Bloom, Mila Jovovich, Mads Mikkelsen, Christof Waltz, and a bunch of other people who probably thought this would launch their careers and instead, they went down in flames. Down in flames. Because airships crashing. Just listen to the episode. The CineMEH Podcast is a Slyjack Media, LLC production Like what you hear? S4E4: Jurassic Park 3

S4E4: Jurassic Park 3

2024-04-0401:15:13

Get chased by T. Rex! Oh, wait... Run in the herd of Gallimimus! No, hang on... Marvel at the colors of the Dilophosaur! Damn, just a second... Okay, none of those things happen in this week's episode, but it's still a Jurassic Park movie, so that counts for something. This week on The CineMEH Podcast, Josh and Ryan are going back 65 million years to the age of 2001 with Jurassic Park 3, the oft forgotten capstone of the original late 90s science fiction trilogy. We'll rampage through topics like the state of genetic engineering, dinosaur parenthood, and the critical need in stories for there to be payoffs for what the writer sets up. A tonally inconsistent mess with hamfisted dialogue and unexplained story beats, Jurassic Park 3 serves as a case study in what not to do when you want to create a film that revolves around fear, dynamic tension, and consistent science. Jurassic Park 3 stars Sam Niel, William H Macy, and Tea Leoni, with appearances by a very unethused Laura Dern. The CineMEH Podcast is a Slyjack Media, LLC production Like what you hear? S4E3: Lucy

2024-03-2801:04:35

What do you get when you mix the unstoppable powers of Captain Marvel with the clandestine crime thriller nature of Black Widow? You get Scarlett Johansson's most forgotten film role: Lucy. On this episode of The CineMEH Podcast, Josh and Ryan review a film they would loosely describe as Limitless meets The Matrix. They'll break down the nature of the human brain and neurobiology, and how that old acorn about 'humans only use 10% of their brain,' doesn't exactly tell the whole truth. With a wide ranging discussion that trends into the religious implications of our understanding of culture and an examination of what human potential really is, this episode is not to be missed! If you're a fan the current meta around telekinesis and telepathy, then settle in for a wild cinematic ride! Lucy stars Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Choi Min-Sik and Amr Waked. S4E2: Airheads

S4E2: Airheads

2024-03-2101:19:06

ARE YOU READY TO RAAAAAAWWWK?! We sure hope so, CineMeheads, because this week we're coming to you LOUD from the late days of the 1990s Los Angeles hair metal scene with this Brendan Fraiser entry: Airheads. This week on The CineMEH Podcast, Josh and Ryan take a meta look at the state of the music industry, with our film as a backdrop for social commentary. We'll discuss whether this movie was at one time meant to be a more serious offering, how the landscape of art and entertainment changes as it becomes increasingly intersected with corporate interests, and how much of an impact the 'death' of radio has had on music. Ever wonder what Ryan did in his 20s before he became a respectable type? Turns out he and Chazz have a lot in common! Airheads leans heavy on the absurdity, but its underlying message about corporatised music and the purity of the artist will be of interest to anyone who's ever wanted to just stick it to the man and do things their own way. Airheads stars Brendan Fraser, Steve Buscemi, Adam Sandler, Joe Mantegna, and Chris Farley. The CineMEH Podcast is a Slyjack Media, LLC production Like what you hear? We're back, sports fans! And speaking of sports fans, here's one for... the sports fans! This week on The CineMEH Podcast, Josh and Ryan are lacing up their skates and putting in their mouth guards for a rock'em, sock'em modern hockey cult classic, Goon! If you've ever earnestly asked yourself what the movie Slapshot would be like if it borrowed heavily from Rocky and had the humor of a 7th grade boy, then we've got a movie for you! Heavy on the violence and light on the actual hockey, Goon is the kind of crowd pleaser that overstays its welcome, but it brought beer so you're kind of okay with it. Josh and Ryan discuss the overblown crude humor, the surprisingly nuanced performance by Seann William Scott, and whether this movie takes itself too seriously, or not seriously enough. Welcome back, sports fans! Enjoy Season Four, Episode 1: Goon! S3E12 - Mortal Kombat 1995

2023-12-0801:13:24

IT HAS BEGUN! And just like that, it has ended. This is it, folks! The Season 3 Finale is here... it's time to... FINISH IT! In case you hadn't picked up on it, or in case you were not aware of the greatest fighting game of the late 20th Century and it's infinitely mimicable sound bites, today's film on The CineMEH Podcast is 1995's immortal... Mortal Kombat! Based on the video game that was based on "kung fu" movies of yesteryear that borrows the exact plot beats of those movies that would go on to inform the video game... look, I'll stop babbling, it's a derivative movie, okay?! Josh and Ryan talk what makes Mortal Kombat a surprisingly competent film, what it's obvious shortfalls are, how the cast really make the movie, and why this film's soundtrack helped propell it into the pop culture stratosphere. And while the discussion here isn't exactly PG13, for those who are faint of heart, rest assured there are no fatality descriptions in this episode. Cause... cause this movie didn't have them. In what our critics are calling a 'flawless victory' of a finale, Josh and Ryan are proud to bring you the final episode of The CineMEH Podcast's third season! See you next year, folks! Mortal Kombat was released in 1995 and stars Christopher Lambert, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Robin Shou, Bridgette Sampras and Linden Ashby. Do you remember that movie that Disney did back in the 40s with a bunch of classical music, and no words, and it was kinda spooky and ended with a big freaking demon on a mountaintop? Member the first part with Mickey Mouse and his blue hat making a bunch of mops go absolutely berserk?! EVER WANTED TO SEE A WHOLE MOVIE ABOUT THAT?! Well, this is kind of it. This week on The CineMEH Podcast! Josh and Ryan are back for another CAGE MATCH where we take on a modern, urban fantasy film staring Nic Cage and based on a five minute short from Disney's Fantasia. Welcome to The Sorcerer's Apprentice. A film more concerned with explaining why sorcerers wear the shoes they wear, than pacing itself correctly. Join your hosts as they debate how a movie can be both too long and too short at the same time, why inconsistent magic rules make for a poor magical movie, and, once again, why bad movies start with medieval flashbacks. This one has it all in this season's penultimate episode that might be the most apt mediocre film yet! You'll laugh (at the incompetence)! You'll cry (at the clunkiness)! You'll be awed (at just how it was that Bruckheimer thought it was okay to expand a short into a three hour epic)! Pop the popcorn and fill up your soda, it's time for The CineMeh Podcast! Got to get tough! .....if you want to finish this flame-out of an action film. Because this one is a labor to get through, but now you know... and knowing, is half the battle. This week on The CineMeh Podcast, Josh and Ryan are joined by a guest commentator to tackle the topic film! As we break down G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra from 2009, you will get the learned perspective of G.I. Joe subject matter expert Mike Winfrey! Mike has been an active G.I. Joe collector for some time, and as well as being extremely familiar with the toy, he is deeply acquainted with the established lore of the comic books and cartoon series! So what does all of that have to do with informing the analysis on today's movie?! Not much! Because whatever studio executive behind this train wreck that thought Baroness and Duke should have a casual love triangle with Destro, that may or may not occasionally involve Storm Shadow, but absolutely triggers Cobra Commander's protective big brother syndrome, probably needs to go back and watch another episode of the cartoon. That sentence, by the way, makes complete sense if you have actually seen this movie, and if you have not, then you are in for a wild ride. Try not to think too hard watching this one: we not only don't recommend, it might actually be harmful to your brain. And now you know. And once again: knowing... is half the battle. .....Yeah, they say that twice in the movie. (WE GOT IT THE FIRST TIME, STUART!) Stuart is one of the writers on this movie. S3E9- Dick Tracy

S3E9- Dick Tracy

2023-11-1001:08:40

Calling Dick Tracy, calling Dick Tracy! Big Boy is on prowl and can't no copper 'cept you bring him down! This week on The CineMeh Podcast, Josh and Ryan take on the underworld next to the banana raincoat and fedora hero of the early 30s in the 1990 fever dream classic, Dick Tracy. With a cast of mob movie heavies and Warren Beaty at the helm, plus a stunning, unique visual style, this film has all the makings of a modern arthouse classic. Instead, it ends up being such a bland, mid film that it is difficult even to form an opinion about why it is so unremarkable! It's a film that just exists, despite having everything going for it. A perfect example of, unfortunately, extraordinarily wasted potential. Our discussion goes into other film noir heroes of the era, including a call back to The Shadow in season 2, and a near constant invocation of Batman. Plus, if you like James Cagney and Edward Robinson, you'll be excited to hear them invoked with mention of vastly superior films like The Public Enemy and Little Caeser. Strap on your talkie watch and load up your tommy gun, this one is a doozie. Dick Tracy was released in 1990 and stars Warren Beaty, Al Pacino, and Madonna, with appearances by William Forsythe, James Caan, James Tolkan and Dustin Hoffman. S3E8 - Battleship

S3E8 - Battleship

2023-10-1201:07:42

Fire on A-4! MISS! Fire on G-7! HIT! YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP! With these classic words, an entire dynasty of gaming was born. Helen's face may have launched a thousand ships, but 'You Sunk My Battleship' has launched millions. So, naturally, someone had to come along in the mid-2000s and make a Transformers-inspired movie about a game inspired by tactical naval warfare. Instead of a classic World War 2 Navy propaganda piece, which the game was based on, we got a 2012 alien invasion... Navy propaganda piece. Because why not. This week on The CineMeh Podcast, Josh and Ryan take on Battleship, a mashup of Rolan Emerich nostalgia and Michael Bay bombast that absolutely no one was asking for. Hasbro thought they struck gold with Transformers and that there was more oil in that well. Turns out there was only saltwater, and this film sunk faster than the Titanic. Put on the Village People's "In the Navy," grab your party favor captain's hat, and pour a shot of Ol' Pusser's Rum... we're going nautical this week! Battleship was released in 2012 and stars Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker and Liam Neeson. The CineMEH Podcast is a Slyjack Media, LLC production Like what you hear? This one comes from a land, from a faraway place, where the caravan camels... oops, that was almost a copyright infringement, and so is a lot of this movie! This week on The CineMeh Podcast, Josh and Ryan rip into one of the worst examples of cultural appropriation and ill-conceived casting ever devised in a video game movie. 2010's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time stands up as a perfect example of why representation in Hollywood is still so deeply necessary. A spiritual successor to S1E7 (we promise we did not plan the 7th episode symmetry), Aladdin and the Prince of Thieves, we break down how this movie could have been its own, fun franchise like The Pirates of the Caribbean but is so mired in poor casting decisions and a convoluted plot-line that it sinks an otherwise promising film. We are interested in your take! Do you find the casting issues and stumbling story as divisive and unwieldy as we do? Are we being too 'woke'? Or is this movie pretty... pretty bad? Find out our thoughts, and give your own! This week on The CineMeh Podcast! Do you have that adrenaline momentum? Are you thinkin' it's time to go get 'em?! They ain't gonna know what hit 'em! Not when Eddie Brock and his symbiote are on the scene, anyway! This week on The CineMeh Podcast Josh and Ryan are taking on Spiderman's greatest nemesis: Venom! Except... except that Spiderman isn't in this movie... and that's actually kind of a problem. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of Venom, and we're not just talking about really loud noises- something this film is absolutely full of. This episode also goes into the deeper lore of the Spiderman universe and what is keeping Tom Hardy's realization of this character apart from the MCU's friendly, neighborhood web-slinger. If you love the comic books! bad news, this isn't really the story of Venom you're looking for. But if you are looking for a self-aware, ridiculous, thrill-ride romp, then buckle up and tap into your inner antihero. That's right, Venom IS a Taylor Swift stan. Hi, he's the problem, it's him. What happens when a video game company blatantly plagiarizes Indiana Jones but is too deep in the coding process to change the entire game? They make the hero a woman, and a new cultural icon is born! Naturally, there had to be a movie. This week on The CineMeh Podcast, Josh and Ryan are discussing the 2001 action-adventure movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, staring Angelina Jolie as the titular Lara Croft. While there is fun to be had, your hosts quickly find that this film completely falls apart under the slightest pressure- something that cannot be said of Lara herself. Bonkers action sequences, bad accents, sleazy villains and nonsensical time-travel abound in this globe-trotting romp that dares to ask the question: just how much plot can we ignore before we realize this movie was badly written?! The answer: not... not much. There's not much plot in this movie that makes sense. S3E4: Daredevil

2023-09-1459:31

It's not often that one film functions as the audition real for a cast of actors to eventually go on to bigger and better roles, but that's exactly what this week's movie does. Daredevil, otherwise known as Ben Affleck's audition for Batman, otherwise known as John Favreau's audition for Happy Hogan, otherwise known as Colin Farrell's audition for Fright Night, is one of those films that lives in the moment so completely it is difficult to remember why anyone thought it was a good idea in the first place. A mess of pacing issues, dialogue flubs, contextless sex and violence, and awash with actors committing to their roles despite the film's issues, Daredevil opens an interesting discussion between Josh and Ryan. Josh watched the more vaunted Director's Cut, and Ryan watched the original theatrical release. Tune in this week as they discuss the differences and why one version represents a far more complete vision than the other. Daredevil may be the man without fear, but you're also going to need a healthy dose of bravery if you intend on sitting through this faltering, early 2000s superhero movie! S3E2 - Max Payne

2023-08-3101:05:30

The sun was coming up with practiced bravado, and a new day of justice was dawning like the first morning after the apocalypse, when Josh and Ryan sat down to review a wildly mediocre, wannabe hard-boiled film noir film from 2008. This week on The CineMEH Podcast, we are reviewing Max Payne based on the 2001 video game of the same name that memorably combined elements of 1940s detective films, graphic novels, and action movies. ....except that this movie does almost none of those things well. Josh and Ryan are in for a lively debate over the merits of this Mark Wahlberg vehicle that feels only tangentially related to its source material. If you are looking for a discussion of Norse mythology, black and white movies starring Humphrey Bogart, bad New York thug accents, and whether or not Mila Kunis can pull off femme fatale- you've come to the right place. This one is a love letter to all the great cultural sins of early 2000s action movies and video games. Max Payne was released in 2008 and stars Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Ludacris, and Beau Bridges.
