Join our discussion of Hamnet, where we lay out our negative feelings on the film. We were not impressed by Paul Mescal’s performance nor by the obvious ways the film tries to make you cry.
Today we discuss Marty Supreme, a film we all have somewhat different feelings on. We argue about some narrative decisions and the character’s actions: is he too unlikeable? Does he deserve happiness? Is the film a sports film?
Today we have the pleasure to talk to the Oscar nominated writer, Robert Kaplow. He discusses his personal relationship to the story of Lorenz Hart and the history of writing "Blue Moon", as well as Linklater and Hawke's contributions to the development of the project.
Today we talk about “It Was Just An Accident”, the latest from Jafar Panahi. We are struck by the seeming simplicity and straightforwardness of the film, understandable given the conditions that it was made under. It’s a strong film that carries a lot of power, but it also has some unexpected moments of humor.
Join our discussion of Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein”, a film we were sadly disappointed by. We express our problems with some of film’s narrative decisions, like making the creature too much of a lost puppy and Victor too much of a monster; and how unpleasant it can be visually, despite the beautiful set design.
Today we discuss "Blue Moon", the new film from the good old pairing of Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke. We really enjoyed how contained it is, taking place in one location in real time, and anchored by an unsurprisingly fantastic performance by Hawke. 00:00 Intro and New Year01:45 Great film!03:05 Ethan Hawke's sex appeal03:47 Make-up and costume design04:54 The Two Sides of Lorenz Hart10:25 Structure and Approach12:05 Ethan Hawke's performance14:18 Lorenz Hart is always performing16:18 Passage of Time and Biopics18:48 Casablanca and Introductions21:34 Does he hate Casablanca?24:05 Hopeless romantic25:04 Hart's constant quoting28:13 Does he hate "Oklahoma!"?32:49 The Cloakroom scene
We kick off the year with the thrills of "One Battle After Another", another great film by one of our favorite directors, Paul Thomas Anderson. It's a film of constant motion, always moving ahead even when it takes a moment to breathe, which is something we love, but it also brings some problems for us. 00:00 Intro01:01 PTA Puns02:40 As good as people say?04:15 Perfidia's complexity and imperfections10:40 Personal and Political12:54 Very detailed world16:30 Christmas Adventurers18:00 Lockjaw, pathetic and sad21:50 Montage sequence24:04 Constant movement24:51 Did we need more moments between Willa and Bob?27:07 Willa and Perfidia34:16 The Best Blockbuster in a while?35:30 Financial flop? Today we discuss Zemeckis’ “A Christmas Carol”, a motion capture style take on the classic story. The narrative is timeless and always works, and we especially appreciate Jim Carrey in the main role.
Join us as we discuss Greta Gerwig’s lovely take on “Little Women”. We discuss the film’s emotionality and brilliant structure, but we are a little divided on the ending. Nonetheless, 2”we think this is one to be watched and rewatched every Christmas.
Today we talk about “The Iron Giant”, Brad Bird’s beautiful 90s animation film. We discuss Bird’s attention to the time period and his use of “camera” movement, all in the service of delivering a cute and heart-wrenching story. We also discuss if it’s easier to connect to The Iron Giant or to E.T.. 00:00 Intro01:17 First Impressions04:10 E.T. vs Iron Giant05:45 Can you connect to the Iron Giant?09:40 The deer's death10:40 Superman, ET and Iron Giant11:55 Brad Bird16:25 The robot's personality 17:15 The animation20:16 Vintage aesthetic 22:02 The Beatnik and Father Figures27:05 Hooked from the start28:02 Setup and Payoff
Join us as we discuss Matt Farley’s underground classic “Local Legends”, a very fascinating film. It’s unconventional and rough around the edges, but with a unique perspective and captivating sense of humor. If you get on its wavelength, you’ll have a great time with this film. 00:00 Intro01:07 A strange film01:57 Getting on its wavelength04:11 Artful amateurishness06:02 Very thematically focused07:41 The Comedy show at the beginning10:05 Laughter?11:42 Nathan Fielder12:25 What is comedy?
For Halloween we discuss the beloved “Train to Busan”. It’s a well built thrill machine, with great action and fun zombies, but we are a little disappointed by parts of the narrative and by the fact that it is a bit bland visually.00:00 Intro01:35 Fast vs Slow Zombies05:10 Good and Bad things06:10 Predictable Narrative?07:00 Men and Women 08:50 Who created the virus?10:33 Corny moment11:50 Dialogue13:00 It works emotionally14:25 Slow transformation15:46 World War Z16:45 The Evil Businessman18:02 Comparison to "The Descent"23:50 Very Well Structured
It’s spooky season and we’re discussing “The Descent”, a cautionary tale on why you shouldn’t go caving. Despite starting out a little generic, the film develops into an fantastic horror exploration of all that could go wrong if you go into a cave with your friends. 00:00 Intro01:00 First Impressions02:11 The Setup 03:50 Too many blondes04:37 Caving is strange06:45 The Narrative Development08:15 Familiar images10:45 First time watching the film14:00 Emotional stakes15:09 The Music16:00 Very Good Horror20:30 Neil Marshall21:30 Sarah's transformation25:40 Sarah's Questionable Actions28:40 Is she justified in killing Juno?30:19 The Ending
