Sweet and Sour Variety Hour gets kind of funky (in a good way). This hour develops into a up-tempo celebration of nutjob tunes. Get over it!

I’m dedicating the entire hour to the iconic band WEEN!
Ween has been releasing music since before I was born, and has maintained a cult following since the early nineties. Their sound (over sixteen album releases) ranges from heavy metal to twangy country, to experimental drone, to cheesy love ballad to full-on screamo - sometimes all on the same album. Ween is mistakenly categorized as a spoof band, but I really think they're a dynamic musical force that transcends all genres. They've successfully retained such a huge fan base that even today in 2022, they regularly sell out huge multi-night stadium events. ANYWAY! One of the many dedicated Ween tribute bands will be playing this Friday, August 26th at the Nanaimo Bar. They’re called Captain Fantasy and pre-sale tickets are on sale now here: tinyurl.com/fridayween

This week on the Sweet and Sour Variety Hour, the single greatest audio achievement I've ever created; a montage of my favourite renditions of the Corn Kid (young man named Tariq) that blew up on TikTok. What a beautiful world it is when we can collectively marvel at the cuteness of one child enjoying his corn. That's at the very end of the hour. Broadcasting to over 40 coastal communities on 101.7fm CHLY on Wednesday August 31st, 2022.
It has the juice.

Feeling quite moody and eccentric this week on the Sweet and Sour Variety Hour! Having no apologies about the selections and settling into an artsy smugness about it. The sound starts off slowish and moves into a jumble of pulsing rhythms and cold vocals. If I were ordering a drink at Mo's Tavern, I might ask for it served in a mans hat. The final fifteen minutes is a clip from Bjork's new podcast, where each episode describes how she made each of her albums. I would be lying if I said I wasn't completely effected. Can you hear it?

At the end of today's Sweet and Sour, we hear an excerpt from Linda Gilkeson's latest gardening e-mail about planting garlic and mulching. Otherwise it's another mix-tape with sweater weather connotations.

We got Dutch, we got German, we got French, we got Cascadian. This week on The Sweet and Sour Variety Hour we hear stuff that sounds industrial, experimental, instrumental, sentimental and all other manner of mentals. Like a potent little garlic clove, I've planted my favourite song from KMVP's new record On The Cusp. If you get your grubby paws on a copy of this limited release, you are sure to garner hella cool points (which is the nourishment of every vinyl collector, let's be honest).

This week on The Sweet and Sour, it's a whole darn hour of non-stop music. That's right! No interruptions with an obnoxious car sales ad, or with a promo from an over-excited fast food enthusiast. No waiting for 5 or 7 minutes before the radio station gets back to what you tuned in for: the music. At CHLY, the ads we do play happen at the top of the hour, and even then, they're generally community information-based and not hardcore salesy.
OK, except for right now.
We're in a funding drive at the moment, which means we're inviting listeners to help fund our not-for-profit radio station. That means you can set up a monthly donation, and join all the others who value a healthy independent radio station. Stations like this one are an endangered species of media. There are 40 coastal communities who can tune in, but only because of those who have given their time and a few dollars over the years. You can choose your monthly gift, as little as $3.50 and set it up in no time at all over at chly.ca/donate
And to those constant supporters out there, thank you. There are many facets of people-power that make this station happen. Recurring donators, office volunteers, programmers, and more - all give willingly and meaningfully to CHLY. You are appreciated.
I myself have produced this radio show for ten years, which means that every week, I give the time it takes to screen music, assemble it in an order I think you'll love, and package it up so it sounds good. Over the years, that's about 1400 hours of unpaid labour! I do it because I love to share music, and I want to make sure whoever tunes in has a good time. Now multiply my effort by about 40 (which is roughly all the other weekly programmers), and there you have a small village worth of keen community members with you in mind. We do it for you. Could you do a little for us?
Please visit the website and set up a monthly gift for maximum impact. chly.ca/donate

This week on the Sweet and Sour, wade cautiously into the waters of the country music genre. We take it nice and easy, like a suspicious mare going headlong into an unknown river.
She's got a heavy rider and the scent of gators in her nose. Aint no tellin' if she'll make it across alive.
If this here is unfamiliar territory, just trust the boot. This son of a gun's got the reins and you'll be glad you came along.

January of 2012 I began the Sweet and Sour Variety Hour. Now we begin it's 12th season.
Generally, I like to deliver an accompanying soundtrack to what I imagine others are also experiencing at 8 in the morning; it's early, I'm rising. Things are slowly moving, my ability to reckon with waking life increases with every stretch and sip of coffee. By 9am, I'm ready to party! The selections I've agonized over reflect this experience. That's the idea, anyhow.
