A boxing match in the park, the third wave of twee, and the Alaska documentary. John Andrews (John Andrews & The Yawns, Cut Worms, Woods, Quilt) (PRE-ORDER) JOHN ANDREWS & THE YAWNS - STREETSWEEPER - PARK BENCH GREEN RECYCLED VINYL- https://earthlibraries.com “John Andrews has spent the past few years tucked away in Red Hook, Brooklyn—a neighborhood that sits just beyond the natural drift of the city. Once shaped by maritime industry and later a haven for artists in search of vast warehouse space, its history and isolation give it a quiet magnetism. Streetsweeper, the fifth album by John Andrews & The Yawns, reflects that vantage point—tranquil, self-contained, and curious about the movements most people overlook. Just a few cobblestone blocks from the freight-ship-lined harbor, Andrews wrote dozens of new songs at his electric piano. Nine of them found their way to Los Angeles to be recorded with Luke Temple, who played guitar and some bass. Drummer Noah Bond and bassist Keven Louis Lareau, both longtime members of The Yawns and Cut Worms, form the rhythm section. Will Henriksen of Florry played fiddle on “Something To Be Said,” while Emily Moales of Star Moles sang harmonies recorded remotely by Kevin Basko at Historic New Jersey. Andrews finished his overdubs back home, letting the record settle again into the landscape that first inspired it. Around that same time, he took a seasonal job in his neighborhood with the NYC Parks, maintaining the soccer fields beside the hulking, abandoned grain terminal at the river’s edge. He’d ride his bike home at lunch to record vocals, weaving the workday into the songs themselves. No matter the task, he brings a steady devotion. The whole album was tracked using the personal guitar pick of late troubadour songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker; a gift to Keven Louis Lareau by a family friend. OnStreetsweeper, Andrews leans into guitar like he hasn’t in years, still letting his relaxed, unhurried touch guide the music. “Goodbye Dirty Snow” is delicate & full of heart, yet comfortably sits next to “Friends In Misery” with its jangly trash guitars and driving rhythm section. On “Through & Through” a Santo & Johnny inspired tune, he sings in an intimate lo-fi voice: “If I were to question your greatest vice, I’d be like Bambi out on the ice.” Each lyrical vignette is filled with Andrews’ gentle empathy—he sings like someone who might’ve seen you playing fetch, kissing on a park bench, or crying on a lunch break. Andrews remains active on the DIY circuit he’s traveled for almost 20 years now, taking his solo shows on the road to backyards and unconventional spaces, projecting his signature handmade animations, which dance behind him. He sells his artwork for cheap, guided by the Bread & Puppet Theater manifesto that art should belong to everyone who wants it, and those paintings funded this album. He’s long admired Little Wings, an artist cut from the same well-worn cloth. After flipping through Kyle Field’s work at a Baby’s All Right show, he asked him to paint the cover; two shaky hockey players clad in 1980’s New Jersey Devils red and green watercolor. Red Hook may not be the easiest neighborhood to reach with its 25 minute walk to the nearest subway station but that distance gives a reward to patience and a singular glow—one Andrews sneaks into every 33 minutes of Streetsweeper. The Super 8 video for “Something To Be Said,” shot by Hilla Eden, wanders through its streets like a hazy love letter to a town on the cusp of inevitable change. The album offers a similar invitation: step off the main road, linger a little, and appreciate the small, overlooked moments that make a place—and a life—rich. Andrews has swept those margins with care, leaving songs that listen, observe, and stay with you. - Kyle Avallone" Excerpt from https://earthlibraries.com John Andrews & The Yawns: Bandcamp: https://johnandrewsyawns.bandcamp.com Instagram: @johnjandrews Merch: https://johnandrewsyawns.bandcamp.com Records: https://earthlibraries.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@thevineyardpodcast
Episode 267 : Sam Cohen

Episode 267 : Sam Cohen

2026-02-2001:04:37

An alchemical stew, correcting problems, and putting it all together. Sam Cohen (Apollo Sunshine, Yellowbirds) “Multi-instrumentalist Sam Cohen writes naturalist songs steeped in blissed out soul grooves and futurist guitar work. This former member of Apollo Sunshine and leader of Yellowbirds is no stranger to fuzzy psychedelia and enchanting melodies. They are presented here with the direct minimalism innate to solo work by John Lennon and Neil Young. Explosive synthesizers and earth-rattling guitar bring an otherworldliness that maintains its roots on this latest track produced with Danger Mouse." The Elvis Presley trading card, a common fallacy, and a trail of a million tracks. Trevor LaVecchia (Free Whenever) “The band's guiding philosophy and approach to making music is rooted in long-form improvisation resulting in a unique blend of vintage psychedelia, dub, eastern modality, african rhythmic tradition and melodic guitar that leaves listeners high -- fully immersed in a synesthetic sound experience.Their new self-titled LP is the Brooklyn-based trio's latest statement and has brought them attention among fans and musicians alike. Coupled with electrifying live shows, Free Whenever is continuing to make waves throughout the modern psychedelic music scene, sharing the stage with acts like Karina Rykman and Balthvs and playing venues like Brooklyn Bowl, Baby's All Right, and The Sultan Room." Classic garage working music, A 2026 affirmation, and voice memoing shows. Bella Martinez (Grocery Bag) “You know you’re in Austin’s West Campus when you see someone tear their entire car bumper on the curb. For Austin band Grocery Bag, it’s their sanctuary. In the Austin college co-op scene, it feels like anything is possible. From close-quarters live shows that push the fire code limits to parties that put surrounding college towns to shame, Grocery Bag is always right there in the mix. Hailing from the live music capital of the world, Grocery Bag wears their influences on their sleeves like badges of courage, and their tenure as an Austin local psych rock act has seen a meteoric rise that keeps on coming. Joe Dirt on VHS, cool things happening in Indiana, and coaxing a song out of something mundane. Drew Auscherman (Playland, Hoops) “In a world of constant change, one of the few things that provides consistency in our lives is the upcoming release of another album by Drew Playland and his Playland recording project, and the increasingly likely fact that it will, in all probability, be essential listening! Playland 2 marks his fifth album of 2025 and is arguably his best to date. It showcases his penchant for eclecticism, that is so deeply rooted in originality that listeners are completely immersed in new aural discoveries with each repeated listen (…and I assure you, there will be many!). In tracks such as “Red Hot Ranch”, “Everyone in the Park Is In Love”, “Power Outage”, and “Interactions”, a sense of dulcet jangle reminiscent of Porch Kiss or Van Chamberlain is juxtaposed with the melodic, Lush-style aesthetic that is found at the most melodic end of the shoegaze spectrum. In contrast, the shoegaze influences in “Luv Like That”, “I Don’t Want To Live Here Anymore”, and “Vanity” take on a more muscular pop quality, with sounds oscillating between fuzzy Mo Troper-style power-pop modernity and the incessant energy of Motorists. When the intensity diminishes, a playful C86 vibe emerges, revealing the cult 80s jangly indie-pop style of contemporary ‘retro acts’ like Zenxith and I Wanna Be A Truck Driver. This is accompanied by a rich, fractured baritone that is perfectly unsuited to its surroundings, offering an entirely original blend of sounds. Drifting with consummate energy through both prolificity and originality without ever diminishing quality, Playland truly is a modern day act to be celebrated." Playing whilst jetlagged, relaxing through camping, and hidden notes. Chet Tucker (Chet Sounds, The Uplifting Bell Ends) “Chet Sounds is the solo project by enigmatic DIY artist Chet Tucker. Chet’s creations have a timeless nature, with noticeable shades of 70’s classic rock, folk and psychedelia. Connections can be heard linking his home grown productions with influences like Neil Young, The Band, The Beach Boys and Todd Rundgren." The ban on flute playing, different pockets you can exist in, and making music for Liam Gallagher’s clothing company. Oscar Robertson (Sholto, SFJ) "Oscar ‘Sholto’ Robertson is a drummer, multi-instrumentalist and producer based in London. Growing up with a love for jazz, soul, krautrock and 60s & 70s soundtracks. The music invites you into a warm array of colours, analogue gooeyness, instrumental grooves and a euphoric sentimentality." Not getting rockinized, the first European tour, and happily getting duped. Jacob Rubeck (Surf Curse, Casino Hearts) "Surf Curse owes its existence to the indomitable spirit of rock and roll, or maybe it’s just the enduring power of friendship. Some would argue they’re the same thing. But they’ll remain timeless as long as kids aren’t willing to feel like outcasts in silence. In other words, forever. So it’s no surprise that Surf Curse, a band that has dedicated itself to expressing the heartbreaks and alienation and small triumphs of growing up, has managed to thrive in DIY spaces, grubby clubs and wherever teenagers and lapsed teenagers can be found online—from their humble origins on Myspace to their rise through Tumblr to Bandcamp and now the 2021 equivalent of MTV—their eight-year old song is a viral smash on TikTok." The Walruses Tusk, consulting the elders, and how to avoid holes. Chad Ubovich (Meatbodies, Fuzz) FUZZ - Fuzz’s Fourth Dream- https://intheredrecords.com "Meatbodies was from the mind of Los Angeles rocker Chad Ubovich, a long time fixture on the California garage punk and neo - psychedelic scene. Meatbodies’ guitar-heavy sound is as hard-hitting as the best punk while also brimming with bent, pop-friendly melodies. 2024’s Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom is Meatbodies’ most ambitious, varied, and realized record to date—and possibly their finest hour." Some Leonard Bernstein flavor, how to say it in less, and Mid-Fi. Under his own moniker Rubber Band Gun, Basko has been releasing music prolifically since 2013 with the intention of creating fully-realized concept albums, which he works on at his home studio called Historic New Jersey. Bumming some Wi-Fi, the creative juices of a day job, and the gateway to the San Juan Islands. "Like the coziness of nostalgia, the 4-track tape recorder is immediately evident during the guitar jangle that opens “Blue Eyed Open Sky”. Recorded in a tent cabin on a river in the musician’s hometown of Big Sur, California, the lo-fi aesthetic of Richard Tripps sophomore album was a deliberate choice, inspired by the analogue charm of tape, where the musician’s formative demos crossed paths with key influences like the VU and fellow Big Sur psych-folk outfit The Range of Light Wilderness." The chilliest city in the world, going back to Windows 10, and hard Italian beds. Scott Montoya (Soft Palms, Happy Sundays, Studios For Studios) "Soft Palms, the brainchild of wife-and-husband duo Julia Kugel (The Coathangers, White Woods) and Scott Montoya (formerly of The Growlers), have announced the impending release of their self-titled debut album on July 31st via Everloving Records. The album is a feast of rich sounds and simple, comforting melodies threading together sock hop rock n’ roll, scrappy dream pop, and ethereal torch songs into a sultry, spacey, and sublime journey towards brighter horizons. The entire album gives off an aura of intimacy while also creating a broader, pastel colored world—a duality achieved through Montoya’s unique and meticulous recording process at the couple’s home studio the Centre Of Mental Arts (COMA), and the magisterial mastering job by longtime friend and collaborator Mick Boggis (Pogues, Mötorhead, 12 Monkeys, Joe Strummer, etc.) who has served as a mentor throughout Montoya’s recording career." Conceptual "dog" sound effects, a surreal experience with Ray Davies, and a spiritual Californian yard sale. John Myrtle "Originally hailing from Birmingham and now based in London, John Myrtle began carving his brand of slightly off-kilter, loveable bedroom pop in 2019 with demos he uploaded to SoundCloud. Having caught the ears of Marc Riley on BBC 6 Music, John was invited to play a live session, and soon his EP ‘Here’s John Myrtle’ was self-recorded to tape and released to critical acclaim from the likes of The Line of Best Fit, Brooklyn Vegan, DIY and So Young Magazine. John followed this up with home-produced mini-album Myrtle Soup in 2021, which was met with equal critical praise and garnered fans from the likes of Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos, Summer Salt, The Walters and Foxygen member and producer Jonathan Rado - whom John’s 2024 single ‘How Do You Break a Heart?’ was produced by. Recently, John has embarked on several tours across Europe and the rest of the world supporting the likes of Kate Bollinger and Cut Worms, and John is set to delight and warm hearts with his most accomplished album yet this summer. ‘Irresistible’ - Marc Riley, BBC 6 Music ‘John is creating his own world of sonic magic’ - So Young Magazine ‘Pop that’s wonderfully lost in time’ - Brooklyn Vegan" Excerpt from https://open.spotify.com/artist John Myrtle: Bandcamp: https://johnmyrtle.bandcamp.com Instagram: @john__myrtle Website: https://www.johnmyrtle.co.uk Records: https://johnmyrtle.bandcamp.com Merch: https://www.johnmyrtle.co.uk/shop The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@thevineyardpodcast

Grounding, the abyss of what is possible, and twisting it up. Lia Braswell (Lia Braswell, TR/ST, She Wants Revenge, A Place To Bury Strangers) "“Moving from the relative anonymity of a drumkit to the revealing illumination of center stage comes with its own unique set of anxiety-inducing challenges, but if Lia Braswell is experiencing any trepidation, it certainly doesn’t show in the quality of music.”" Excerpt from https://liabraswell.bandcamp.com/music Lia Braswell: Bandcamp: https://liabraswell.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @lia_braswell Merch: https://liabraswell.bandcamp.com/merch The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@thevineyardpodcast

An unplanned party, taking a road trip to Philadelphia with Micheal Imperioli, and playing a show with M.I.A. in Poland. Mike Brandon (The Mystery Lights) "The roots of the Mystery Lights can be traced back to Salinas, California, where guitarists Mike Brandon and Luis "L.A." Solano formed the band while still in high school. Crafting their own distinctive take on a Nuggets-era '60s sound, they played around their home turf for several years, frequently revising their lineup and eventually releasing their debut LP, Teenage Catgirls & the Mystery Lightshow, in 2009. By 2012, Brandon and Solano had each made the leap to New York, settling in Brooklyn and recruiting new members Alex Amini on bass and Nick Pillot on drums. Further honing their mid-'60s Kinks and Easybeats-inspired sound and adding spacy psych elements, they began gigging around the city, recording a handful of EPs and singles before getting picked up by Daptone's rock imprint Wick Records in 2015. Their first release for the label was the 7" single Too Many Girls/Too Tough to Bear, followed in 2016 by a self-titled full-length LP. A second album for Wick, Too Much Tension!, was released in May 2019; by this time, Nick Pillot had left the group and Zach Butler had taken his place on drums, with Lily “Lilcifer” Rogers joining on farfisa."
