Bumming some Wi-Fi, the creative juices of a day job, and the gateway to the San Juan Islands. "Like the coziness of nostalgia, the 4-track tape recorder is immediately evident during the guitar jangle that opens “Blue Eyed Open Sky”. Recorded in a tent cabin on a river in the musician’s hometown of Big Sur, California, the lo-fi aesthetic of Richard Tripps sophomore album was a deliberate choice, inspired by the analogue charm of tape, where the musician’s formative demos crossed paths with key influences like the VU and fellow Big Sur psych-folk outfit The Range of Light Wilderness." An endless road, ancient genes, and the action from the aisle seat. Adam Amram "Adam Amram, son of renowned composer David Amram, blends folk, jazz, classical, and world influences in his Americana songwriting. A longtime Bushwick, Brooklyn resident, he helped shape the local music scene. His debut album, To the End, out June 20 on Nudie Records, features 12 original tracks with a band of acclaimed musicians, showcasing his unique style and heartfelt sensibility." The chilliest city in the world, going back to Windows 10, and hard Italian beds. Scott Montoya (Soft Palms, Happy Sundays, Studios For Studios) "Soft Palms, the brainchild of wife-and-husband duo Julia Kugel (The Coathangers, White Woods) and Scott Montoya (formerly of The Growlers), have announced the impending release of their self-titled debut album on July 31st via Everloving Records. The album is a feast of rich sounds and simple, comforting melodies threading together sock hop rock n’ roll, scrappy dream pop, and ethereal torch songs into a sultry, spacey, and sublime journey towards brighter horizons. The entire album gives off an aura of intimacy while also creating a broader, pastel colored world—a duality achieved through Montoya’s unique and meticulous recording process at the couple’s home studio the Centre Of Mental Arts (COMA), and the magisterial mastering job by longtime friend and collaborator Mick Boggis (Pogues, Mötorhead, 12 Monkeys, Joe Strummer, etc.) who has served as a mentor throughout Montoya’s recording career." Conceptual "dog" sound effects, a surreal experience with Ray Davies, and a spiritual Californian yard sale. John Myrtle "Originally hailing from Birmingham and now based in London, John Myrtle began carving his brand of slightly off-kilter, loveable bedroom pop in 2019 with demos he uploaded to SoundCloud. Having caught the ears of Marc Riley on BBC 6 Music, John was invited to play a live session, and soon his EP ‘Here’s John Myrtle’ was self-recorded to tape and released to critical acclaim from the likes of The Line of Best Fit, Brooklyn Vegan, DIY and So Young Magazine. John followed this up with home-produced mini-album Myrtle Soup in 2021, which was met with equal critical praise and garnered fans from the likes of Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos, Summer Salt, The Walters and Foxygen member and producer Jonathan Rado - whom John’s 2024 single ‘How Do You Break a Heart?’ was produced by. Recently, John has embarked on several tours across Europe and the rest of the world supporting the likes of Kate Bollinger and Cut Worms, and John is set to delight and warm hearts with his most accomplished album yet this summer. ‘Irresistible’ - Marc Riley, BBC 6 Music ‘John is creating his own world of sonic magic’ - So Young Magazine ‘Pop that’s wonderfully lost in time’ - Brooklyn Vegan" Excerpt from https://open.spotify.com/artist John Myrtle: Bandcamp: https://johnmyrtle.bandcamp.com Instagram: @john__myrtle Website: https://www.johnmyrtle.co.uk Records: https://johnmyrtle.bandcamp.com Merch: https://www.johnmyrtle.co.uk/shop The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@thevineyardpodcast

Grounding, the abyss of what is possible, and twisting it up. Lia Braswell (Lia Braswell, TR/ST, She Wants Revenge, A Place To Bury Strangers) "“Moving from the relative anonymity of a drumkit to the revealing illumination of center stage comes with its own unique set of anxiety-inducing challenges, but if Lia Braswell is experiencing any trepidation, it certainly doesn’t show in the quality of music.”" Excerpt from https://liabraswell.bandcamp.com/music Lia Braswell: Bandcamp: https://liabraswell.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @lia_braswell Merch: https://liabraswell.bandcamp.com/merch The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@thevineyardpodcast

Emily Tooraen (Tchotchke) TCHOTCHKE- PLAYIN' DUMB - 12" BLACK VINYL- https://www.hellomerch.com "Tchotchke is Anastasia Sanchez (drums, vocals) and Eva Chambers (bass, vocals) and Emily Tooraen (guitar, vocals). As teenagers, Sanchez and Chambers both played in Los Angeles' indie-darlings Pinky Pinky and recorded for the Innovative Leisure label. Now all grown up, at the ripe old age of 22, the NYC-based trio ushers in a new era with a new band name, home turf, line-up and of course, music. The band's debut single, "Dizzy," was recorded on Long Island in Brian and Michael D'addario's (aka The Lemon Twigs) parents' basement." Excerpt from https://www.utahculturalalliance.org. An unplanned party, taking a road trip to Philadelphia with Micheal Imperioli, and playing a show with M.I.A. in Poland. Mike Brandon (The Mystery Lights) "The roots of the Mystery Lights can be traced back to Salinas, California, where guitarists Mike Brandon and Luis "L.A." Solano formed the band while still in high school. Crafting their own distinctive take on a Nuggets-era '60s sound, they played around their home turf for several years, frequently revising their lineup and eventually releasing their debut LP, Teenage Catgirls & the Mystery Lightshow, in 2009. By 2012, Brandon and Solano had each made the leap to New York, settling in Brooklyn and recruiting new members Alex Amini on bass and Nick Pillot on drums. Further honing their mid-'60s Kinks and Easybeats-inspired sound and adding spacy psych elements, they began gigging around the city, recording a handful of EPs and singles before getting picked up by Daptone's rock imprint Wick Records in 2015. Their first release for the label was the 7" single Too Many Girls/Too Tough to Bear, followed in 2016 by a self-titled full-length LP. A second album for Wick, Too Much Tension!, was released in May 2019; by this time, Nick Pillot had left the group and Zach Butler had taken his place on drums, with Lily “Lilcifer” Rogers joining on farfisa." Requirements for achieving a high level of classical piano, new ways of working, and the hypothetical hang with Paul McCartney. Chester Hansen (BADBADNOTGOOD, Fieldrow) "Like musical theatre and scripted television, jazz and hip-hop are uniquely, undeniably North American art forms. Though the latter genre was born out of funk and disco in the late 1970s, many of its landmark artists embody the ethos of jazz: loose, visceral, instinctive. Some hip-hop acts--A Tribe Called Quest, or more recently Kendrick Lamar--have successfully repurposed jazz, but the older genre has seldom made successful inroads into new generations of rap fans. And that's what makes BADBADNOTGOOD, the four-piece, Toronto-bred jazz outfit that has melded jazz and instrumental hip-hop into something elusive, something altogether their own, so unique. On their latest full-length effort, IV (due out via Innovative Leisure on July 8th), BBNG decide to expand their universe, which was already one of the most compelling, labyrinthine worlds in pop music today. Saxophonist Leland Whitty, a long-time collaborator, joins Chester Hansen, Matthew Tavares, and Alexander Sowinski on a full-time basis; for the first time, guest vocalists are welcomed into the fold. Some artists find collaboration stressful and cluttering, but BBNG simply seems freer to chase down creative rabbit holes than ever before. The effect is apparent immediately. See "Lavender," a collaboration with the Montreal-based producer Kaytranada, which pairs delicate, skittering production with a punishing low end. Or take the virtuosic closer, which underscores superb performances by Whitty and Tavares with a grand swell of strings. On "Hyssop of Love," upstart Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins moves languidly, stretching out taunts ("I heard your plug was drrrrry") before he snaps upright ("Never needed no dollars to prove worth"). The result is not just BBNG's most expansive, most dynamic effort to date, but their best. Lest anyone think the group is only concerned with blurring genre lines, the title track alone is enough to ensure the most discerning jazz purists will have to respect BBNG's technical chops. IV is a master class in mood. The opening three-song suite ("And That, Too.," "Speaking Gently," and the Sam Herring-assisted "Time Moves Slow") is a slow, slinking creep, like moving uneasily through an abandoned house. And while BBNG explores different tones on subsequent tracks, that feeling--the search, the push for the unknown--is the prevailing theme. "Chompy's Paradise" is peaceful and serene, but ends on an uncertain note, unresolved. Like most great artists before them, the quartet understands that it's more important to raise questions than to answer them." Taking an Uber from Detroit to Toledo, operating on ESP, and celebrating 3/11 day. Cocktail hour music, the intention of success, and the espresso catering business. Philip Frobos (Omni) "The music of Atlanta trio Omni has always swung fast and hit hard. And Souvenir, their fourth album and second for Sub Pop, packs their biggest punch yet. Inactive during the majority of the pandemic–the longest downtime in their history–they approached this recording with lots of pent-up energy. Guitarist Frankie Broyles, singer/bassist Philip Frobos, and drummer Chris Yonker converted their creative fuel into sharp, driving songs that land immediately, sporting chopping riffs, staccato beats, and wiry melodies." Cop mode, black tar CBD, and the USA Tour Help 2015 Facebook group. Patton Magee (The Nude Party, Patton Magee) "For The Nude Party, nearly a decade has flown by in the blink of an eye. In that time, the New York-based band has released a pair of well-received albums, an EP, and played countless shows. Prior to the pandemic, the band was really starting to hit its stride. They had a system in place and were spreading their brand of melodic rock to the masses. In fact, they could count Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, and Orville Peck as vocal supporters, which led to support slots for each. Soon, incredible live appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival, and Shaky Knees became the norm. In late 2020, The Nude Party released its sophomore album, Midnight Manor, which debuted at #1 on the Alternative New Artists Album Chart. The sextet was unable to tour behind it and compared its release to skipping a stone over a raging river. A byproduct was that it showed the band that on their third album, they couldn’t lean on their tried-and-true method of testing out new material live and then hunker down to record. Instead of sitting around, the band got busy. Setting up shop in their Upstate New York headquarters, the group used the funds they’d saved and spent a year building a studio space out of a barn. Tired of paying for studio time and being rushed, The Nude Party methodically worked at their own pace. Out were the sessions lasting a strict handful of days. In were impromptu writing moments and picking every sound as they went along. When the band met the Tampa based engineer Matthew Horner, they discovered that they had the opposite problems: Matthew had a collection of incredible gear with no studio and The Nude Party had a great new studio with no gear. So they invited him to move his equipment up to the Catskills to record an album together. Such was the origin of the band’s third album, Rides On. Unlike their first two albums, The Nude Party decided to produce Rides On themselves. With their new space and the help of Horner, The Nude Party had as much fun creating as they ever had at any other point in their career. The lack of pressure allowed them to record over 20 songs, including some that dabbled in electro-pop and stripped-down country before settling on the final 14 songs. Rides On, the band confidently says, is their best record. It’s also the most homegrown and the most organic record The Nude Party has created to date. Working on the album themselves allowed for a democratic process where each band member could take a fuller role in producing the songs they wrote. There was some initial trepidation about there being too many cooks in the kitchen. But as is the benefit of owning your own studio space, time was not a factor. In turn, it allowed for the band’s ideas to blossom, everyone’s voice be taken into account and create an exciting, collaborative vibe. The relaxed atmosphere of the sessions, and arriving with only loosely structured material, allowed the band to thrive in the studio. It also unleashed a diverse sonic texture compared to their previous releases, as best demonstrated by the title track, “Ride On.” Sonically, the song is reminiscent of Sticky Fingers-era Stones, but its lyrics are mini-vignettes where Magee sings about persevering through adversity. The twangy, blues-drenched licks of the title track, the breezy desert dust encapsulated by the ‘70s infused “Hard Times,” the Shaun Couture-led “Sold Out of Love,” the swinging ‘60s garage vibes of “Cherry Red Boots,” which captures the spirit of what The Nude Party are going for — and showcases their growth as a band. As does expanding the band’s sonic palate with a cover of Dr. John’s “Somebody Tryin' To Hoodoo Me.” It would have been easy to stick to the New Orleans musician’s format, but the band showed off their prowess with their own darker, electric version of the deep cut. The Nude Party coalesced and embraced the spirit of collaboration. They’re excited to begin the next chapter of their career. At a time when it would have been easy to pack it in, the band continues to persevere." Just as their music breaks free from genre constraints, their journey crosses borders without the need for a metaphorical passport. You could visualise them lost in the moment as day drifts to night at Coachella, like spiritual cousins to Khruangbin, but you could just as equally imagine them amidst the psychedelic haze of the original Woodstock." Field recordings of chill lo-fi beats to study to, Youtube videos with the comments turned off, and a dynamite hot dog. Jess Sylvester (Marinero) Marinero - Taquero (Official Video)- https://www.youtube.com Marinero - Cruz (Official Visualizer)- https://www.youtube.com Marinero - Sea Changes (Official Video)- https://www.youtube.com Marinero - Dream Suite (Official Visualizer)- https://www.youtube.com "As Jess Sylvester finished his Hardly Art debut as Marinero in the fall of 2020, he realized it was time for a change. Sylvester grew up in Marin County, on the doorstep of San Francisco. It was a nurturing community for a high-school punk with a pompadour and, later, for a sober songwriter with a proclivity for moody psychedelia. But he wanted to be challenged and inspired by a new setting and scenario around strangers who prompted him to approach his music in unexpected ways. So in September 2020, as the world continued to reel in lockdown, Sylvester headed several hours south to Los Angeles, a city that, despite the relative proximity, the film buff knew largely from classic and cult films situated there. When he arrived, he kept digging into that cinematic past—Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye, with John Williams’ classic theme, or classic 90s movies about East LA, many featuring Edward James Olmos. They shaped his understanding of his new town just as it began to open. This is one pillar of the multivalent and endlessly lush La La La, Marinero’s new album about sobriety, identity, and fantasy that is playfully named both for the city that helped shape it and the sophisticated pop it contains. Sylvester wrote about characters outside of himself, whether considering the heroine reckoning with her own version of keeping clean or the screenwriters whose work was deemed communist simply as a political convenience. He linked those songs with motivational anthems about self-acceptance and playful numbers about flirting through food, shaping a 12-song set rich with humor, empathy, and encouragement." A mini pan flute orchestra, the Alexander Technique, and an exotica Hitchcock-esque documentary. Victoria Mordoch (Floreana) "Floreana is the solo project from Los Angeles musician Victoria Mordoch. Her debut EP Floreana I weaves together elements of exotica, ambient and downtempo jazz. Having grown up in a musical family Mordoch was always musically inclined which led her to over a long decade career as a session bass/guitar/synth player in LA and eventually earning her a spot as a bassist in Taylor Swift's touring band. Quickly disillusioned by the pop music apparatus, Mordoch began exploring her own sound and experimenting with recording. The inspiration for Floreana one struck Mordoch while watching the documentary "When Satan Came To Eden," following a failed utopian settlement in the Galapagos, with the name Floreana coming from the island the events took place on. Fascinated by the story of a doomed attempt at paradise, and surrounded by an array of music equipment, Victoria began creating. She worked mostly alone at home, meditating on these ideas and channeling them into the music. “I'd always make sure the connection to the feeling was first and let everything unfold from there without getting in the way…even the tracks were written in the order they appear on the record.” Floreana One, is the first installment of a three-part series, captures tones reminiscent of early Kraftwerk and Brian Eno, exploring themes of isolation and idealism through tape-saturated woodwinds, hazy synthesizers, and vintage drum machines. Features appearances from her father- David Mordoch, John Carroll Kirby, Nico Georis, Shags Chamberlain, and Daryl Johns." Not having the security blanket, an incognito experience, and sleeping on pool tables. Will Sprott (Shannon & The Clams, Will Sprott) "In August 2022, Shannon Shaw’s world was turned inside out. With mere weeks to go until their wedding, the singer’s fiancé, Joe Haener, died in a horrific car accident in front of his family’s vegetable farm in Oregon. It was a devastating loss that hit Shannon & The Clams with cataclysmic force. Shaw’s bandmates, guitarist Cody Blanchard, keyboard player Will Sprott, and drummer Nate Mahan, had also grown close to Haener, a drummer and fixture of the Bay Area music scene. They canceled shows and rallied around Shaw as fans reached out to show their support. Shaw spent her nights with Blanchard and his family or with the Haeners, finding comfort in community. She adopted a fluffy dog named Spanky-Joe. She moved out of the Portland apartment where she and Haener had been living. She fearlessly chronicled the whole experience online. “Losing Joe made me unafraid of so many things,” Shaw says. “I have a lot less fear. It’s given me new perspective. Baring my soul is so much less scary than it would’ve been before.” Amid this overwhelming sense of grief, melodies and lyrics began to flow out of Shaw. Instagram posts about her relationship with Haener became the building blocks of new compositions. Her Clams bandmates were also reeling and writing their own new songs. From the shock and trauma of that tragedy comes Shannon & The Clams’ latest album, The Moon Is In The Wrong Place, a powerful exploration of loss, time, love, and resilience that stands as the beloved garage band’s most ambitious, emotionally searing recording to date. In preparing to record, The Clams passed demos back and forth for months and, uncharacteristically for them, jammed on unfinished riffs to see what would happen. “Shannon and I usually write separately, and we usually bring pretty crafted, finished songs,” says Blanchard, who developed tennis elbow after their marathon rehearsal sessions. When Shaw struggled to find the right chords to go with her melodies, she obtained an Omnichord — an electronic instrument with a built-in set of chords and rhythms — and unlocked a new creative palette. In 2023, they returned to Nashville to record with longtime collaborator Dan Auerbach at Easy Eye Sound Studios — who oversaw 2018’s Onion and 2021’s Year Of The Spider — and captured what they’d been creating. The results show the group ascending to new creative highs, while still weaving in the classic garage-rock and girl-group sounds that have long been a hallmark of their work. This time around, they venture to deeper, farther out musical locations than before and bring a new sophistication and intricacy to their arrangements, plus they get an assist from pro wrestling great Mick Foley on handclaps. Meanwhile, Shaw’s powerful voice veers between sweetness and snarl — sometimes within the space of a single lyric."
