Description

If there’s one thing the Percy Jackson series has taught its readers is that everyone can be a hero, no matter how big or small. In this podcast, we will be reading and analyzing the Percy Jackson series starting from The Lightning Thief from the perspective of youth activism work, and how you don’t need to be a demigod to be a leader in your community today.

It's election week, and this episode we have an interview with 14 year old activist, Yolanda Renee King, granddaughter of Martin Luther King, Jr.. Yolanda illustrates to us what she calls "innovative activism," the story behind her speech at the 2018 March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C., and how Congress is practically no different than high school. She also demands that you guys go out and vote, so you better get to the ballot box Tuesday! Click here for our linktr.ee if you want to join the Unclaimed Community.
We finally get into the first four chapters of The Lightning Thief, the first book in the Percy Jackson series. Amina, Anika, and Obse talk almost too much, touching down on topics such as neurodivergency, the pressure of academic achievement, and how it's okay that Grover is kind of a hot mess.
Anika interviews Rhode Island youth activist, Zainabou Thiam, about her youth-led advocacy organization, SIlence is Violence. They also talk about Kanye West and his recent atrocities, the impact of identity labels, the scary side of polarization, and approaches to policing. CW: brief mentions of police brutality and a possible civil/race war.
In this first episode we're giving y'all an introduction on who we are, what experiences have shaped us, and what ultimately led us to create a Percy Jackson Activism Podcast. CW: school shootings.
