We're clearing the Christmas finish line with our big finale. Up first is Emily covering Lifetime's The Holiday Junkie, the directorial debut of star Jennifer Love Hewitt. Then we (well, I) dive into a review of the full season: bests and worsts, 2024 cozy cardigan observations, and a full ranking of the movies that were covered. We'll be back with Feminine Critique Proper in 2024, complete with Christine and more intelligence. Thanks again for listening and happy holidays!
Did you know that the secret ingredient for the world’s best hot chocolate is…love? That’s one of many facts we learn when we dive into QVC’s debut film venture, Holly and the Hot Chocolate! Emily is joined by special guest star Josh Hurtado, film critic for Screen Anarchy, founder of Potentate Films, and certified Christmas movie completist. Follow his work on the various socials @hatefuljosh and discover someone who watches even more of these movies than Emily!
It’s two Emilys for the price of one! On this very special and legally sound episode, Emily is joined by writer Emily Menez to tackle 2011’s The Case For Christmas. We get Dean Cain manhands, Johnny Cochran references, Canadian elves that are very much modeled on Elf, and so much more (including but not limited to a very dark theory about a dead cloying child!). Be sure to check out Emily Menez’s many ventures via https://emilymenez.net
Break out those cargo pants with the extra pockets! We’re here to Christmas party like it’s 1999, the Hallmark way. Emily is joined by friend of the pod and Head Hauntress Elizabeth Katheryn Gray to dive choker first into A ‘90s Christmas. Get ready for dial-up internet jokes and maybe, just maybe, some touching moments? We’ll see. Be sure to follow Elizabeth’s many ventures on Facebook and catch the finale of her show! https://www.blogtalkradio.com/archivistsbetonsexywitches
Parenting a baby is apparently easy: it’s kindergarten when things get really hard, or so sayeth our leads in Hallmark’s 2024 sequel to Three Wise Men and a Baby, Three Wiser Men and a Boy. Rejoining Emily are Hallmark experts Brandi and Dave Jackola. Follow their various ventures via @brandiwine and @djevildave, and be sure to check out Shield Podulation for random coverage of Star Trek and Brandi’s live youtube show, The Undready Room.
Ho ho hope you’ve got a warrant for this one! Emily sits down with The Cultural Gutter’s Carol Borden to explore what the Denver (and also Wisconsin and maybe Canadian) holiday crime scene looks like through a Hallmark lens. It’s 2021’s The Santa Stakeout! Have a listen and find Carol’s incredible work over at https://culturalgutter.com
Whoa boy, this one is something! Original recipe cohost Christine returns to help Emily navigate the challenges of dating in 2014 with Christian Mingle (something titled Christmas Mingle), a 90 minute ad (sort of?) for a very confusing matchmaking app. This movie is streaming on Tubi and written and directed by Corbin Bernsen. It’s a LOT to take in, but thankfully, holiday stalwart Lacey Chabert is there to help us through.
Obviously, we weren’t going to let the season pass without tackling Netflix’s snowman hunk-woos-Lacey-Chabert movie. Emily brings the big guns in for this one with Jason Fozzie Nelson, an expert in all things snowman hunks. Don’t forget to support Jason by buying his book! No, it doesn’t include hunky snowmen, but if we can up the sales, the sequel surely will. https://www.amazon.com/Always-Side-Jason-Fozzie-Nelson/dp/B0C9FZVMCS
Seasons greetings! It’s time to ring in the holidays with the official start of the TENTH year of Stocking Stuffers! Emily is off to the races with a new entry from the Hallmark canon: 2024’s Holiday Mismatch, a slight twist on the usual story with Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick reuniting from their Sabrina days to set up/break up their adult children. This is a solo effort to remind you all of the formula, but the guests are coming soon!
Christmas may have passed, but the season can't really be over until Emily meets Santa Claus. AND THIS TIME IT'S IN THE FORM OF NORM! It's the season finale through 2012's The Merry In-Laws, streaming now on Tubi and starring George Wendt and Shelley Long. We follow that up with a season 9 recap, ranking the films and remembering the highs, lows, and peacoats. So. Many. Peacoats. Thanks for joining this season!
Break out your winter hot pants! It's a warmer holiday trip down south with Brazil's Christmas Full of Grace, a wacky holiday romcom that will give you dangly earring inspiration like you've never seen. You can find it on Netflix and you SHOULD. Emily is aided tremendously in this human raccoon hunt by the fabulous Carol Borden of The Cultural Gutter. It's joyous in every direction. Be sure to check out Carol's work on The Cultural Gutter (https://culturalgutter.com/) and Monstrous Industry (https://monstrousindustry.wordpress.com), and follow #driveinmob on Twitter and other socials for weekly hijinks!
Are you ready to post some flyers? It's apparently required for anyone visiting Mystic, Connecticut, and on this very special episode, we're heading there in marine colored peacoat style! It's Hallmark's Mystic Christmas, featuring lots of snappy dialogue, hot divorced parents, and even more turtle-killing plastic. Emily is joined by the wonderful Brandi and Dave to dive in with the seals. It's a blast! Hallmark gets serious (though the coffee cups stay empty). Emily is joined by Head Hauntress Elizabeth Katheryn Gray for a dive into the 2022 Hallmark movie My Southern Family Christmas, starring the one and only Bruce Campbell (playing dad to a character NAMED Campbell, just to be confusing). It's shockingly touching and kind of...good? Be sure to check out Elizabeth's many projects, including the Archivists Bet On Sexy Witches radio show!Main page: https://www.blogtalkradio.com/archivistsbetonsexywitchesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/THESEXYWITCHESRecent episode: http://tobtr.com/12295819
Who says Hallmark invented the Cozy Cardigan Christmas genre? Emily is joined by blogger and podcaster Elwood Jones for a trip back to an even older well with 1997's made-for-CBS classic Borrowed Hearts, directed by First Blood(!!!)'s Ted Kotcheff and starring Roma Downey, Erik McCormack, and Hector Elizondo as an angel, or devil, or...something. You can find Borrowed Hearts today streaming on Freevie, and check out Elwood's various projects including his podcasts (Asian Cinema Film Club and Movies and Tea) and blog at https://fromthedepthsofdvdhell.wordpress.com/
She's back! Christine hitches a ride on Santa's slay to join Emily for a discussion of 2023's EXmas (not to be confused with Merry Ex Mas, Merry Ex-Mass, or a dozen other similar titles). This one is streaming on Amazon's Freevie via Buzzfeed, whatever those words mean. Fluff your favorite baby Jesus's beard, crack open a Heineken, and have a listen!
Break out the bagpipes and heat up that haggis: it’s a Merry Scottish Christmas! Emily teams up with blogger/podcaster/Scottish duke Kevin Matthews for a walk through the 2023 Hallmark Channel production, the reunion of Party of Five siblings Lacey Chabert and Scott Wolf. There’s lots of discussion about Scottish land politics, peacoat packing logistics, and how two dead grandparents + one dead uncle + one dead potential father-in-law does NOT add up to a dead wife. Be sure to catch more Kevin:Raiders of the Podcast: https://raidersofthepodcast.blogspot.com/For It Is Man’s Number (blog): https://foritismansnumber.blogspot.com/
The halls are decked and the coffee cups are empty, which means it's time to tackle a whole bunch of Cozy Cardigan Christmas movies! Emily starts the season off with Lifetime's heavily plagued production of Mistletoe In Montana, a 2021 film streamable now on Hulu. Join the fun and share your own favorite dangly earrings on our Facebook group or Instagram (@feminine_critique_pod). Happy do-sigh-doh'ing!
Buckle up that life jacket! We’re diving DEEP into a big pool of catchup, including an extended cruise on The Poseidon Adventure. The docket this episode is a close split between horror and Oscar-ish fare, plus some random stuff in between (you should expect nothing less by now). Fair is fair, shorts are short, and Anthony Perkins is one fine man. That's right! It's the long-awaited natural pairing of 1983's Psycho II and 1985's The Legend of Billie Jean! Christine and Emily share their toasted cheese sandwich and sack of Kit Kat bars with the legend himself, Keith Allison! It's a joyous two hours celebrating all things Meg Tilly, Yeardley Smith, innovative sequels, good skincare routines, great haircuts, and of course, the power and possibility of youth. Be sure to get yourself a copy of Keith's book Cocktails and Capers, find his writing at https://suburbanpagans.substack.com, and follow him on the socials @bondvivant1!
