Description

Welcome to Setting the Stage, a podcast where I, Isaac Shaker, will talk about different campaign settings for roleplaying games.

I'll talk about established settings, either those made for D&D, like Faerun and Greyahwk, or those that are adapted for it, like Middle-Earth, and Westeros. I'll also interview members of the D&D community who have created their own campaign worlds. This is a chance for the guest to show off what they’ve made, explain challenges they’ve overcome, and discuss paths that didn’t work for them when creating their campaign setting. Our homebrew worlds often get no attention outside of our own play groups, so this is a way to present a DM’s hard work to a wider audience.

This wouldn't be possible without the amazing D&D community and I'm looking forward to interviewing you!

Alan tells us about his Daggerheart campaign setting, Fractus, that is launching on Kickstarter soon. Fractus was a normal planet until it exploded and stopped halfway through. Now bunches of asteroids rotate a swirling magical maelstorm at the center of the planet. The people of Fractus survive on the asteroids which are large enough to support life. The land is now separated by air rather than oceans, resulting in a different path for technology along the lines of flight rather than sea travel.Fractus is available on Kickstarter at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/icv1/fractus-the-broken-worldAlan also has a big catalog of TTRPG products he's produced in the past that you can check out on DriveThruRPG: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/publisher/17830/alan-tuckerIn addition to his TTRPG writing, Alan has written a few novels that you can find links to on his website: http://www.alantucker.net/ For the latest updates on what Alan's doing you can follow him on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tuckerauthor.bsky.socialOur website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show? Joel tells us about his actual play podcast, Critical Bits! The campaign was a teen super hero story using the Powered by the Apocalypse system Masks. The Masks system is great for teen drama and coming of age stories for superheroes that still live with their parents, have school, and don't know who they want to be yet. Joel and the players did a great job of capturing those feelings in a world where superpowered individuals are under threat. The government attempts to register all teen superpowered people and there are tons of organizations looking to kidnap superpowered teens to enslave them. Does good win in the end? Well... probably. That's how these stories work, right? Right? You can find Critical Bits on your podcast app or learn more at Joel's website: https://www.doyouvalidate.com/do-you-validate-network/critical-bitsJoel's current show is called Oddity Roadshow that you can check on on his website as well: https://www.doyouvalidate.com/do-you-validate-network/oddity-roadshow-podcastFor the latest news about Joel's next project you can follow him on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/doyouvalidate.bsky.socialOur website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show? The Fallout TV show has ended, but you can still get more Fallout in your life with TTRPGs!Kylie talked with me about her actual play campaign, Fallout: The Garden of Atom. The show follows Pete and Reed as they leave their Vault in Florida. They travel towards Orlando in search of Pete's father who left Vault 71 a few years previously. Along the way they meet the wasteland survivor, Ruthie, and the Mrs. Nurse robot, Hawke. The campaign is played using Modiphius's Fallout 2d20 system, the perfect TTRPG for the Fallout universe. You can listen to the Fallout: The Garden of Atom show on Kylie's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMlGSIdwPJnmOAps3VvZXwjJUWgo_pLAQIf you like more shows like that you can find more about them on the Dicescape website: https://www.dicescape.com/And for everything Kylie, check out her Linktree and various socials: https://linktr.ee/kriticalroseAlso if you want to try out the official Fallout 2d20 system made by Modiphius, check it out on their website: https://modiphius.net/en-us/pages/fallout-the-roleplaying-gameOur website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show? Duncan Rhodes comes on the show to talk about his new book, The Creative Game Master's Guide to Extraordinary Locations: & How to Design Them or just Extraordinary Locations. The book is filled with 30 adventure locations to drop into your campaign, modify, or use as a full adventure path! The locations are loosely stated out for D&D 5e but could easily be adapted for any fantasy system. Additionally, the book has a step-wise guide for crafting your own adventures based around locations just like those in the book.To follow Duncan's blog postings you can check out Hipsters & Dragons: https://www.hipstersanddragons.com/And his book, The Creative Game Master's Guide to Extraordinary Locations: & How to Design Them, is available on Amazon and most likely at your local book or game stores: https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Masters-Guide-Extraordinary-Locations/dp/1965636306Our website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show? This is the second of a two part interview with Calico. If you haven't listened to the first episode with him, you should go do that before listening to this one. The first episode was #72 and this is #72.5.Calico returns with additional info on the world of Psychomortis. We get to hear more information about the Ecclesia church that rules over the world above Pandora's Labyrinth. More about the physical locations of the world. And EVEN MORE on the philosophy behind Psychomortis that makes it such a cool game.Psychomortis is still in the early stages of development, but its playable! CalicoVisions tells us about his game system and setting Psychomortis. The game is constructed to challenge players and characters to look inside themselves to find what's really important to them. In the far future the Earth has suffered from the arrival of the Iris which caused vast changes across the world. PCs are trapped beneath the Earth in a vast maze known as Pandora's Labyrinth. They seek an exit and/or spiritual absolution as they survive and explore in the dark depths. The experience is simultaneous a dungeon crawl and philosophical exercise. This is the first of two episodes about Psychomortis. Calico contacted me about how the game and setting had evolved since our first recording. This is the first recording which has the original version of Calico's world and game. The second one is more refined and filled in which you can see in part 2!Psychomortis is still in the early stages of development, but its playable! I talked with Aaron Ryan about two of his book series, Dissonance and The End.Dissonance is a near future world where aliens have attacked, killing most humans and animals on Earth and driving humans into hiding underground. Humans finally develop technology to fight back and the war enters a new stage while the characters also struggle to determine the motivation for the alien invasion and nefarious actions of the government. The End is a Christian End Time series based loosely on the events described in Revelations. A man calling himself Nero has risen to rule over the world and he has outlawed Christianity. Robots called Guardians hunt Christians throughout the world, murdering them on the spot if they don't recant their faith. A resistance movement works in the shadows against Nero, but things aren't looking good for them.We talked about the basics of those settings along with how they could be adapted for RPG campaign settings. My main recommendations were Ashes Without Number, Spire, and Blades in the Dark.If you're interested in reading Aaron's books you can find them at most any bookstore or library. Both of the series are also being adapted into movies, but aren't publicly available yet. Aaron's website is https://authoraaronryan.com/ for the latest updates on his work. Next up for Aaron is the Talisman series that covers events within the "Aaronverse" in the decades between Dissonance and The End.Our website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show? Sensei Suplex joins us to talk about his campaign, Project Aurora. Suplex started Project Aurora in college with some friends. They agreed to have a few different campaigns done by different DMs to all exist within the same shared world. Suplex transitioned to paid DMing and the world expanded beyond that into a huge RPG experience with dozens of DMs and thousands of people playing, all in a shared universe. With such a large pool of players and DMs there's a decent effort to match groups in style, tone, and schedule so that everyone is happy with what they're doing. There are full campaigns and pickup West Marches style adventures as well. Sensei Suplex believes in matching what players want with his DMing style. Thus the world/universe for Project Aurora is varied with different cultures, technology levels, and themes for whatever a particular group is interested in playing.Sensei Suplex also has a YouTube channel with some great videos on how to be a better DM. The most popular of those videos being one on how to create something the TTRPG equivalent to the Nemesis System from the Lord of the Rings: Shadow of War video game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aSJ145y2hASensei Suplex also recommended a Ginny Di video on paid DMing that you can talk a look at here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_M0M-j1ruZQIf you'd like to learn more about Sensei Suplex, his YouTube videos, or Project Aurora, it's all available from this link: https://beacons.ai/senseisuplexOur website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show? There were some audio issues in this episode that we did our best to correct. Hopefully you can understand everything or close to everything! If you can't, you can always drop into the Discord to ask additional questions. The story of Godstorm starts 70 years ago when a fisher from the city of Gulia went deep into the ocean. He came back many days later covered in various marks. The marks gave him magical blinking powers. The king of Gulia unjustly executed the fisher to remove a threat. The burning fisher's marks then spread throughout the populace, making it so now about 20% of Gulia's citizens bear the marks and their power. At the same time electric eels were being developed as an energy source. The eels are taunted to put their shocks into batteries which power a bunch of technology throughout the city. The design goals for the system of Godstorm focused on every PC being able to blink in short teleportation jumps. There are a bunch of different classes that give little bonuses along with selected feats to the blinks. You could leave a hazard behind you, create a protective ward where you blink to, or heal everyone along the path of your blink. You can try the Godstorm system out for yourself by following this link: https://siixu.itch.io/godstormAnd you can be involved in the playtesting of Godstorm by joining the Discord: https://discord.gg/dqq2tBywBbOur website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show? John tells us about his campaign setting, Tahlvaen. The world was something he dreamt up in childhood that he's now turning into a campaign setting for D&D. Tahlvaen is threatened by eldritch entities known as the Outer Five. These nasty beings were cast out beyond the Veil that separates them from the Tahlvaen. The eight Veilborn gods protect the world from the Outer Five, but all planar travel is cut off as a consequence. New magic classes exist in Tahlvaen to reflect this, focusing on music, resonance, and psionics as sources of power.John has been writing a full set of books for publication on Tahlvaen. He plans to launch a Kickstarter in April 2026 to bring the book to life. John tells us about his actual play show, Blittle League Blaseball! The show is based on the now passed internet phenomenon, Blaseball. In Blaseball, baseball teams play against each other while using magical and technological powers. Their furious battles satisfy the Elder Ones and prolong the time before the Antediluvians rise and consume the world as we know it. So if there are professional Blaseball players... There must be a Blaseball Little League, right? That's where Blittle League Blaseball comes in!The campaign focuses on a team known as the Summerville Sunflowers. The four PCs are the main members of the team who go on monster slaying missions as part of their Blaseball training. John uses the PbtA Monster of the Week system with players upgrading each time they go up a grade at school. The best place for more about Blittle League Blaseball is their website: https://www.blittleleague.com/YouTube is the best place to listen/watch Blittle League Blaseball: https://www.youtube.com/@BlittleLeagueAnd if you want to check out the team's other project, Dungeons and TBD, follow this link: https://www.dntbd.com/Our website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show? 2025-10-0801:54:14

KC Broadhead is a certified life coach who uses D&D and other TTRPGs as a motivational force for his clients, mostly young men and boys. He meets with each person weekly to check on their goals for self improvement. Based on their progress each client is rewarded some building points that can be spent on their character in their weekly session. People who work more consistently on their goals get greater rewards in the game, instilling a sense of competition in the other participants to do better on their own goals. It's a new and effective life coaching method that KC is operating under the name Knight's Castle Services.KC's world is named Liara. The world is used for all of his life coach sessions with each group adventuring at the same time but in different regions of the world. The history of Liara is consistently muddled, either due to magic or bad records. The gods of Liara are separated into nine different ranks called Rings. Creation gods at the top, followed by Elements, Time, Fate, Souls, Knowledge, War, Dreams, and Thought. The Creation gods made the universe while lower Rings sprang into existence as needed or when a particular mortal being became worshipped after their death. There's also a secret tenth pantheon...The people of Liara are threatened by a violent race of fairies called the Zephyrynn. The best defense is the Ka’vothan, a race of super strong oni-like people that are able to fight back against the fairies due to their superior strength.KC's D&D style life coaching is available on his website. 65 - Al and The Backrooms

2025-09-2401:25:57

Al from the Point of Insanity Game Studio and Podcast is here to talk about a couple of different things! We started off by discussing the Dark Sun campaign setting, which was a post-apocalyptic campaign setting released for D&D in 1991. Next was the changes in D&D over the editions/years. After that was Al's Point of Insanity Network podcast, a variety podcast about a number of different topics in the geek and horror space.Next we discussed one of Al's RPGs he's designed, Strange Things Afoot. Characters in Strange Things Afoot are high schoolers with their stats derived from their character's grades in school. They work to investigate horror stories based on belief. The monster from the horror story can manifest as a tulpa, powered by the belief that society has in that monster. The teenagers must discover the terrifying mysteries, defeat them, and survive to make it to gym class on time. The last thing we discussed, that was the main focus of the episode, is Al's RPG called Caught in the Backrooms. The Backrooms concept comes from video games where if you maneuver your character correctly you will clip into an area of the map intended just for developers to access during playtesting. But once you're in that zone there isn't a way out. You wander aimlessly through endless blank corridors with the occasional secret room. That's the Backrooms. Caught in the Backrooms provides rules for playing characters who have slipped into the Backrooms of reality and are unable to escape. PCs must struggle to find resources, fight against monsters, and maintain their sanity, all while looking for the exit, if there even is one.You can learn more about Al's podcast, Point of Insanity Game Studio, at his website or on your podcast app: http://www.poigamestudio.com/Al's storefront on DriveThruRPG where you can find Strange Things Afoot and Caught in the Backrooms: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/publisher/2995/point-of-insanity-game-studioAnd Lulu if you prefer paper copies: https://www.lulu.com/search?contributor=Al+SeegerAnd one of our previous guests, Peter from Tales From Elsewhere, is crowdfunding his first TTRPG book, Clockworld. 64 - Kevin and Orbis

2025-09-1001:48:48

Kevin tells us about his setting and TTRPG, Orbis. It's a crunchy mech combat game!Central to Orbis is the Ion Tempest storm. It started long ago and afflicts the world with electrical storms, cold snaps, heat waves, and odd magnetic and gravitational fields. History of the world before the arrival of the Ion Tempest is lost. Some sort of apocalypse occurred to this science fiction civilization that destroyed everything and created the Ion Tempest. The storm also has sentient representations of it called Apostles. The chaotic wilderness is full of lucrative treasures from before the collapse of civilization. People known as ronin go out into the wilds with protective mechs known as armored gears to fight behemoth monsters, secure territory, and find loot. Some ronin are trained as voltweavers, able to use the energy of the Ion Tempest itself to perform magical feats. On the system side, Orbis seeks to unify mech games that focus on the mechs with ones that focus on the pilots. Both your mech and your pilot are relevant and advance as you play the game. As you might imagine for a mech game, customization is rampant with tons of options, gears, levers, and nozzles to fiddle with for how your pilot and mech are setup. For action resolution you compare the score of your most relevant attribute and skill to a difficulty number. You gain a modifier on a d100 roll equal to the difference between your numbers and the difficulty number. Your target is always 50 after that modification. Critical successes occur whenever you a double on the D100 (11, 22, 33, etc).Orbis is still early in development but there is enough material to start playing it if you're interested. 63 - John and Dalteria

2025-08-2701:08:59

John tells us about his setting and TTRPG system he's developing, Dalteria.Dalteria the world was originally lifeless. Long ago on Earth, magic existed. When God flooded Earth, the wizards took all the magic with them. Noah built his ark while the wizards left Earth to settle and terraform Dalteria with their magic. Millenia later the people of Earth advanced enough to develop colonization starships. One of these colonies made it to Dalteria, but were not received peacefully. The resulting war eventually resolved and the current timeline is set 400 years afterwards. Regular animals and plants have largely died out and been replaced by magical or technological horrors. People cluster into cities that are protected by technology or magic to keep themselves safe from the monsters that cover the planet's surface. PCs take on the role adventurers going outside the safety of cities for various tasks. The system is still in the early stages of development. Players choose tech or magic for their power sets (or both, but they don't play well together). The main stats are Body, Mind, and Spirit. There are six kinds of magic for casting spells. Monsters somewhat match up to these stats with base monsters being modified by different types of magic or technology to make something more interesting and threatening. 62 - Deor and Black Noon

2025-08-1301:03:55

Deor tells us about his game system and setting, Black Noon. Interesting fact about Deor is that he has never GMed a game of his own. Black Noon should end up very player-facing in how its written and how it plays. The Black Noon system is a 2d6 system. Rolls are modified by adding more dice or with bigger modifiers. When adding more dice you always select the best two dice from the bunch (or worst two if you're receiving a penalty). The system is still in early development, but is shaping into being class-based.Black Noon's setting is a place for pirates and cowboys. A new continent has been discovered across the western ocean. Two major powers are at odds to control the new discovery. The first of these powers is an analogous combination of Britain, the United States, and Venice. A mercantile focused democratic nation. The second power is analogous to the Spanish Empire. A religious monarchy. The two powers must contend with a third rebellious element, pirate cowboys! The land and seas are threatened by pirate cowboys that ride on running and swimming capybara-like mounts. Nowhere on land is safe and ships that sail too close to the shore are at risk of being overwhelmed by pirate cowboys taking to the sea on their swimming mounts to raid and pillage. The players must decide whether to join or defend against the pirate cowboy menace. Our website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show? 61 - Helix and RPG Major

2025-07-3003:00:14

Today's guest is Helix, the GM of the actual play podcast, RPG Major. RPG Major is a detective show in a fantasy version of modern Seattle. The show is half RPG/half musical improv, setting it apart from many other actual plays. The game is run using the Genesys system. Every few minutes a song drops in to cover the group's activities and emotions. The whole show is accompanied by live acoustic guitar music. There's a little chord the guitarist plays whenever the dice are rolled or a bad thing happens. Great, easy listening. The world is much like our own, but with more fantasy creatures right on the surface of the public eye. Creatures are everywhere if you know where to look, but most people simply don't look. History remains similar to our Earth, with no fantastical events or magic in the last few centuries. All the satyrs, dryads, fairies, and ogres have gone into hiding. And when a problem with the fantastical world emerges, who you gonna call? Not the Ghostbusters, but Thorn Investigations! The PCs play the members of the new detective agency, Thorn Investigations, which helps the people of Foxglove (fantasy Seattle) whenever a supernatural issue arises.RPG Major LinksWebsite: https://www.rpgmajor.com/Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5VJkfQ5Rm2KimYsCpOOUOsApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rpg-major/id1766663794Discord: https://discord.gg/HXNRZqZxAEHelix and I also briefly discussed the Filipino monster, the Manananggal, and the Filipino actual play podcast, the Blades of Mayari. 60 - Todd and Skjaald Sagas

2025-07-1602:33:43

Todd tells us about his world, Skjaald, and his fantasy TTRPG system he's designing for it called Skjaald Sagas. The main continent for Skjaald is Driktsuung, a place with varied biomes similar to North America. The people of Driktsuung are divided into the Six Realms with different governmental structures for each Realm. All the typical fantasy races are present with a few twists. Magic is deeply connected to the soul in Skjaald, causing changes in the nature of all magical creatures. Dragons are the most affected as they are beings of almost pure magic. Magic also acts as a form of radiation that slowly turns spellcasters into draconic beings. The Skjaald Sagas system grew out of D&D with d20 resolution and class-like choices based off different personality types called archetypes. Examples include Fighter, Protector, Cleric, Thinker, Coward, and Leader. You roll using your attributes which are also increased through usage. Thus if you want to be a better melee attacker, you either have to attack during combat or state that my character is practicing during downtime. Higher attributes that are associated with a certain archetype allow you to increase the stage of the archetype and unlock new abilities. 59 - Ryan and Ethereal

Ryan is designing a TTRPG system and setting called Ethereal. In the setting all cryptids like Sasquatch, the Loch Ness Monster, and Mothman are real. An international government organization known as the Beacon exists to control these cryptids and keep them away from humanity. The players act as agents of the Beacon, solving different cryptid crises in an X-Files or Men in Black fashion. The stories take place during the 1910's, but with slightly more advanced technology available for Beacon members. The Ethereal system is a hybrid of d20 and detective games like Gumshoe or Brindlewood Bay. Everything has a set DC of 11 or 22 to make things simple and players have a resource called Momentum for investigations. Each player character is a picks a Division (class) and Specialty (subclass) as part of their training and expertise within the Beacon. If you'd like to follow along with Ethereal's design and release process you can stay up to date with these links:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@FineGroundCryptidsTwitch: https://www.twitch.tv/finegroundcryptidsDiscord for playtest files and community: https://discord.com/invite/JhWh8ewSW6Our website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show? Luca presents his world, dubbed Codex Inversus. Luca is from Italy and has used Italian Renaissance art as the inspiration for his campaign setting. Whenever he writes a new piece of lore its accompanied by a photoshopped piece of Renaissance style art. To see all the amazing art you can check out Luca's links below.Codex Inversus is a world that its creator god abandoned. With the creator gone, all the lesser divinities, devils, angels, and elementals began fighting. This conflict resulted in The Collapse which fused the planes of existence into the mortal world. Parts of of those planes are still scattered across the world. Forced to live in the same territory, the wars for extinction have ended between outsiders. Devils now coexist with angels, their respective progeny, and many humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, orcs, and beast people alike. Some still wait for the return of the creator, but others work to build a new world in the creator's absence.Check out these links to follow the content that Luca is making for Codex Inversus. He shares the same stuff to all three places, but more of the fan content is present on Reddit.Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/codexinversus/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/codex_inversus/Medium: https://lucavanzella.medium.com/If you'd like to vote in the CRIT Awards you can check out the different nominees on their website: https://www.critawards.org/Our website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show?
