Description
Kev and Randy take to the mics once a week to talk about a song from the catalogue of the enigmatic, brilliant, and sometimes flawed rock legends Queen. Each week a song will be chosen at random so that the boys won't know what track they'll be reviewing. Kev comes into the podcast as a Queen afficionado, while Randy is a more casual fan, but has a huge wealth of knowledge about recording, performing, and music in general. At the end of each episode, both will either upvote or downvote the song and we'll take to social media to see what the listeners think!

NOTE: This episode has been reuploaded to correct an editing mistake by so-called Captain International! It's the last B-side episode in our hattrick of pre-recorded shows while old R-Boat is over in Z-Boat! There were some technical difficulties during recording but hey, we're truly international, so we.... kinda sorted em out! Look, we don't have Off Menu money or whatever that one is with Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes money. We're just two lowly podcasters tryna' go intergalactic. We're indie and proud. Fuck Thatcher. This week's episode covers arguably the weakest song from Queen's 70s output, "Mad the Swine". A song that 100%, definitely, categorically, absolutely DOES NOT belong between Ogre Battle and My Fairy King, no matter what Roger or Bri say about it!If Kev were to title this podcast, he’d probably call it “Mad the Swine”, or possibly, “This little piggy should have gone wee wee wee, straight down the shitter!”NOTE: Skip forward to 13:02 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is the very excellent "Darling of the CBC" from Absofunkinlutely's black album, Residential Gas Leak. When checking for residential gas leaks, it's best to call out a qualified plumber. When checking for groove-laden jams about the state of the music industry, it's best to call out a qualified Cardinal! Holy smokes and saints alive I never thought this would happen to me! What's that you ask? Oh, not much... I just happen to be lucky enough to co-host a podcast with the most international dude in the entire Northern hemisphere. Mr. "Jetset" Randy Woods himself is over in the cradle of humanity sharing his vast, VAST knowledge of sound, noises, ambience, acoustics, and such with a very wide array of wide-eyed (and almost certainly completely starstruck) Zambians. When he gets back, who knows if he'll carry on debasing himself by talking to me. We can only speculate. This week's episode covers a Freddie solo track that was reworked for the Queen Forever compilation, released in 2014. It's the much rearranged "Love Kills" (Ballad)If Kev were to title this podcast, he’d probably call it “Love Kills”, or possibly “So does Malaria.”NOTE: Skip forward to 6:19 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is the sensational "Bode's Galaxy" from Absofunkinlutely's red album, Blues Kid City. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, and you really ought to as the fate of the free universe hangs in the balance, is to go listen to it immediately on the mysterious tubes of Y00! https://youtu.be/lB7iaAnZOZcIf you want to get involved in the Kofi Klub, you can make a donation here: https://ko-fi.com/seasidepodreview and let us know which song you want us to add to the wheel! Fool in the Rain, The Fool on the Hill, Ship of Fools, What a Fool Believes, Fool for the City, Everybody’s a Fool, Fool if You Think It’s Over, and Fool in Love. Every fucker and their dog seems to have a fool song for the love of gods! Well, Queen wrote one. Kinda. Brian wrote one actually, and he wrote it in his dentally-inclined pre-Qeen musical project, Smile; a band that had a dashingly handsome drummer and then two other blokes who history has been far less kind to! This week's episode covers the B-side to Seven Seas of Rhye. It's an old Smile song that the boys dusted off and tried to add a lick of paint to and it's called "See What a Fool I've Been"If Kev were to title this podcast, he’d probably call it “Well she’s gone, gone this morning” or possibly, “Maybe she’ll be back in time for tea”NOTE: Skip forward to 8:01 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is the lead track off Randy's last album. Soul Hammer and it's titled "Alphabet City". Randy of course grew up in a place where letters were outlawed and only numbers were ever used. Alphabet City was the underground club that he and his rag tag gang of lexical lawbreakers would head to every Thursday night to play ilicit scrabble tournaments! He wrote this song in honour of those halcyon days! He needs some cool tunes, not just any will sufficeBut they didn't have Randy Woods Band, so he bought Def Leppard twiceNow cruisin' in his Caravan, he sees homies as he passBut if he looks twice, they're gonna kick his lily assThat's right folks, we're talking about Dexter and Noodles and all the rest of the crazy gang that made up the darlings of the pop punk band "The Offspring". But not that song. No, not that one either. No, we're not doing Self Esteem... NO NOT THAT ONE EITHER! It's a pick by our good pal Alice's Dad!If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Magnesium and silver nitrate", or possibly, "You gotta keep em separated"!The twenty first installment in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers a song submitted by Kofi titan Barry John Williams who has had his number come up for the first time! It's "The Offspring" with "All I Have Left Is You"The song at the end is the sublimely thought-proviking and deeply lyrically complex and weighty "Tiptoe through the Tulips" by the legendary Tiny Tim. The Attack Dragon (Draco ferox) is a large, obligate quadrupedal dragon distinguished by a dense, osteoderm-reinforced hide and an elongated cranial structure optimized for both intimidation and prey capture. The skull supports a double row of recurved, serrated teeth that are continuously replaced throughout the animal’s life, while a heavily muscled neck allows for powerful lateral strikes. Its wings, though capable of sustained flight, are proportionally thicker than those of migratory dragon species, favoring explosive takeoff and short, violent aerial engagements. Internally, D. ferox possesses a highly efficient cardiopulmonary system and a specialized foregut chamber lined with heat-resistant tissue, enabling the ignition and controlled expulsion of volatile gases used primarily for combat rather than hunting.Dietarily, Draco ferox is a hypercarnivorous apex predator, feeding almost exclusively on large terrestrial megafauna and rival dragons. It is an ambush hunter, relying on territorial familiarity and burst aggression rather than endurance pursuit. Mating behavior is infrequent and highly ritualized; breeding seasons occur once every several decades, typically following periods of environmental stress that reduce population density. Courtship is violently competitive, with males engaging in lethal dominance displays that often result in the death of weaker contenders. Females select mates based on combat success and physical damage sustained, a trait believed to correlate with genetic resilience. After mating, the female deposits a small clutch of heavily calcified eggs in geothermally active sites, abandoning them entirely—hatchlings that survive are immediately solitary, aggressive, and fully independent within days of emergence. This week's episode covers Randy's most-manifested song, "Dragon Attack", from Queen's eighth album, "The Game". If Kev were to title this podcast, he’d probably call it "Dragon Attack" or possibly "Leaping Lizards!"NOTE: Skip forward to 28:58 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is the song Kev wrote for his childhood best pal, Birchy, who he referenced in the Ask Us Anything section. He's making a list, he's checking it twice, he's gonna find out who's naughty and nice. Who is the fat, judgmental prick and who does he think he is passing judgment on the rest of us? He works one day a year and then oversees an Elven sweatshop the rest of the year cranking out shitty plastic toys that he grudgingly disperses from his heaving sack and we're all supposed to be impressed???? I think not!Anyway, this week's episode covers an undisclosed number of Christmas songs as suggested by our wonderful Discordants! We're not telling you what they are, you'll just have to wait to find out! If Randy were to title this podcast, he’d probably call it "YELLOW FEVER!" or possibly, "It is, ah, raining not!"NOTE: Skip forward to 18:34 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is a live performance of the wonderful Driving Home for Christmas by the sadly departed Chris Rea. Brideshead Revisited: The Sacred & Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder is a novel by the English writer Evelyn Waugh, first published in 1945. It follows, from the 1920s to the early 1940s, the life and romances of Charles Ryder, especially his friendship with the Flytes, a family of wealthy English Catholics who live in a palatial mansion, Brideshead Castle. Ryder has relationships with two of the Flytes: Lord Sebastian and Lady Julia. The novel explores themes including Catholicism and nostalgia for the age of English aristocracy. Oh, shit, hang on. I think I've copied the wrong notes here.... ah well, fuck it, it's late! This week's episode covers the epic closer, "In the Lap of the Gods...Revisited", the final track from 1975's "Sheer Heart Attack"!If Randy were to title this podcast, he’d probably call it "In the lap of the Gods part deux" or possibly, "Good song!"NOTE: Skip forward to 23:48 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is the one of Kev's favourite Randy Reggae songs; Cube Two Four. Once upon a time, there was a small wooden puppet who dreamed of being a dancer. All his puppet friends told him "You'll never be a dancer! You lack the requisite dexterity because of your inarticulate limbs!" The little wooden puppet wouldn't listen and set out to the big city to find a dance master to help him accomplish his dreams. For 12 days and 12 nights he journeyed, by hill and by stream, by wood and by plain. Eventually, weary and slightly worm-chewed, he came upon a roadside inn from whence came the sounds of music which made the puppet's feet start to jig and his body to convulse into electric rhythms. He walked toward the door and as it opened and the warm yellow light of lanterns bathed his upturned, hopeful face, some great lumbering drunken twat staggered out and stepped on him, crushing him into fifteen splintered, lifeless pieces. The moral of the story is, if you're a small wooden puppet, don't wander around outside nightclubs in Clacton because, chances are, you're gonna git squished by a bell end!Oh, this week's episode covers "Dancer", the second track from 1982's "Hot Space"!If Randy were to title this podcast, he’d probably call it "Rock out with your cock out" or possibly, "Jam out with your clam out, however it worst best for you!"NOTE: Skip forward to 25:10 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is the deeply philosophical and profound "Lunch", a treatise on the intellectual colonisation of the service industry by corporate bad actors and the unwillingness of an apathetic public to discern between quality and mass consumption. Deacy wrote some absolute bangers for Queen. Another One Bites the Dust, Spread Your Wings, Your My Best Friend. But he also wrote a few more mellow tracks like In Only Seven Days and this week's track, "One Year of Love", which was his only sole-writing credit on A Kind of Magic. His two co-writes with Freddie from the same record, well... we weren't fans. Mainly because they're absolutely terrible! So what will Randy think of Queen heading into sax territory? He does like it when bands get the horn... We also discuss Record Store Day and we dive into a question about who exactly it is who is shaping modern popular music! If Randy were to title this podcast, he’d probably call it “Didn't do it this week Kev” or possibly, “I'm a podcast mould breaker, no regular formats can hold me!!!”...NOTE: Skip forward to 22:32 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is Hijack the Show, by Absofunkinlutely. Put your guitar on, turn your amp up to ten, and rock out with the Cardinal. The Cardinal is promising to be 10% nicer to Mrs. Cardinal but I'm not convinced! We talk about the sadly departed Jimmy Cliff and how you really had to be a very good musician back in "the day" (not sure which day that was or what the cutoff is, but hey, you know what we mean!) We also get another scintillating format idea from Kev and Randy contends that we really are a couple of agreeable fuckers. There are questions from Ruud and Barry, but first, we have the small matter of some Northern Irish punk music to deal with! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "You've got my number", or possibly, "but I'm not in on Wednesdays so leave a message with me mam"!The twentieth installment in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers a song submitted by Kofi powerhouse, Al Dudeney. It's "The Undertones" with "You've Got My Number (Why Don't You Use It!)"The song at the end is the beautiful live performance of "Many Rivers to Cross" by Jimmy Cliff, who passed away on the day of recording. The performance is taken from 1969 ahead of the release of his self-titled third album. You can watch the performance here: https://youtu.be/EzS-Jis7kfAIf you want to get involved in the Kofi Klub, you can make a donation here: https://ko-fi.com/seasidepodreview and let us know which song you want us to add to the wheel! Randy's keeping it tight and to the neat! He'd also like to buy the world a coke - but Kev's not having it! Our movie review section could become another pod within a pod (possibly a pod within a pod within a pod if we do it during the kofi episodes!) and along the way, hats are fucked and Kev's status as an international podcaster is yet again highlighted by Randy as a cause for celebration. We talk about one hit wonders and just how in the hell do you warm up for a gig? There's also the small matter of "Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together), the final song from Queen's magnificent A Day at the Races album, but how will we vote on it??!!! I mean, I know because I edited the episode, and Randy knows because he was there, but YOU don't know and really, it's you guys that are important, not us!!!If Randy were to title this food covering, he’d probably call it “Saran Wrap” or possibly, “Sauron Wrap”...NOTE: Skip forward to 25:50 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode "Big Brother", Randy's superb song about the surveillance state from Absofunkinlutely's Red Album! The one where Kev gets back from Gainesville. And Randy sticks the boot in. Repeatedly! We also have a very important hard drive update from the Cardinal in which he lets us know whether he's been able to salvage all those fart noise sound effects he's been working on for the past couple of decades. Also, Randy recommends documentaries, but only one's he's never seen! We'd sure appreciate it if someone could watch the Boys 2 Men documentary and get back to us with the Coles' notes! After all this foolishness, we sit down and listen to another rehash of old material from the last Queen album; "Made in Heaven".If Kev were to title this episode, he’d probably call it “Made in Heaven” or possibly, “Made in Heaven”...NOTE: Skip forward to 28:49 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode "No Good (For You)" by Captain Spreadsheet and the Abacus Rattlers from Mars. Get your tomatoes in people, winter is upon us!!! There's the usual buffoonery; The Cardinal is having problems with his "drive" and Mrs. Cardinal probably isn't happy about it! Kev's heading to a show next year and we dig into the finer points of lyricism and whether it's all just a big old bag of bollocks! Oh, and somewhere in there, we also talk about the last song written solely by our hero, Freddie; "A Winter's Tale" from 1995's posthumous release, "Made in Heaven".If Kev were to title this episode, he’d probably call it “Lake Geneva Shoreline” or possibly, “What a way to sign off”NOTE: Skip forward to 28:49 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode "Soul Sucker" by Absofunkinlutely. We get into the thwackfuck, which Kev's not having and has decided to fix next year. Randy's been at communist headquarters again getting all bolshie and shit. Tay Tay rears her inoffensive head, we talk at some length about the relative merits of panning in popular music, and we're introduced to a band from the 60s that neither of us have listened to named "Love". And look, we like love. We might ever go so far as to say we love it. But you know what we won't say? We definitely won't say "Ni!" to passers by. Oh and Alice's Dad is back with another pair of questions for us! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Alone Again Or", or possibly, "I refuse to finish that thought"!The ninteenth installment in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers a song submitted by the ever lovely Dan Flett; the trippy, classical-infused lead track from Love's 1967 album "Forever Changes". So power your flowers, dig out your flares and prepare to get grooby man. It's time for "Alone Again Or"!The song at the end is the beautiful performance of "Angle From Montgomery" by Bonnie Raitt and John Prine at the ACL Presents: Americana 18th Annual Honors which aired on November 23, 2019 on PBS. Bear in mind that Bonnie is 70 years old here and John is 73 and giving one of his last performances before succumbing to Covid just 5 short months later. He is sorely missed. The one where Randy tells Kev about some fella who dangles low, Kev has to take an impromptu citizenship refresher and passes with moderately flying colours, we hear from Lord Percy, and we decide that all things considered, Regina is top tier and we're probably better off as we are. We also dig into the third single released from The Works, Freddie's Game-era-esque ballad, It's a Hard Life!If Kev were to title this episode, he’d probably call it “It’s a hard life” or possibly “Great King Prawn!”NOTE: Skip forward to 26:47 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode "Charisma Free" by Randy Woods Band. At the height of his local celebrity, Prince signed a record contract, made fat stacks, got pissed off at the fatter stacks that the fatter cats were making and took all his toys and went home! That has very little to do with today's episode other than a conversation about how artists are treated by the industry, but we also talk about the relative attraction of baseball and why it's definitely not Randy's favourite pastime, we talk about The Cardinal's upcoming trip (well, the trip that he's currently on) and we also dive into a deep cut from The Works sessions that turned up on the Queen Forever compilation in 2014. Today's episode covers "Let Me in Your Heart Again"!If Kev were to title this episode, he’d probably call it “Let me in your heart again”, or possibly, “No serious, I’ve lost my keys and it’s pissing down out here!”NOTE: Skip forward to 28:30 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is the remake of Absofunkinlutely's "Grow Your Love" that appears on the Randy Woods Band's second album, "Soul Hammer". RIGHT! Stop that! It's all too silly! We get invaded by another podcast, there's plenty of radio talk and the boys go back to their childhoods to talk about the use and abuse of Walkie Talkies! The Dad jokes are back and Randy's radio retrieval ruination really rather rattles us! Aside from all that, we manifest, we spin the wheel, and we talk about a Queen song. I mean why the hell else would you even be here if we weren't doing that??? Oh yeh and there are a couple of listener questions near the end, if that's the sort of thing you like! It's time to get the cat claws out because we're talkin' "Flick of the Wrist" from the dynamite third album, "Sheer Heart Attack".If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "Let me squeeze you 'til you dried" or possibly, "wrists have been flicked"NOTE: Skip forward to 27:37 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is the rather brilliant Vaudevillian ditty from the Randy Woods Band, "Why Can't We Get Along" which you can find here: https://youtu.be/xFWlG-Y7zCQIf you want to get involved in the Kofi Klub, you can make a donation here: https://ko-fi.com/seasidepodreview and let us know which song you want us to add to the wheel! The last episode was the last song on the last album released by Queen with Freddie. This episode SHOULD have been the last song on the last album released by Queen with Freddie. Nary a dry in the house when listening to this one in December 1991 folks. There are allegations from Randy, we establish Kev's bone fides as an actual accredited Group Musicology Expert, and there's a lot more talk about Poison than you might think, but we're gonna blame Barry John Williams for that! We're spinning up one of the most beloved songs in the Queen catalogue today so the Cardinal had better be on his best behaviour! It's the Brian-penned epic, The Show Must Go On.If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "The show did go on" or possibly, "Freddie soars on last time"NOTE: Skip forward to 34:33 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is the live version of the song with Elton John that we listened to a little of in the episode. Burt Reynolds, Dick Dale, Cliff Richard, and fuck me if it isn't Hank Marvin with his red Fender Stratocaster! We talk about surfin' USA, surfin' UK, and surfin' SK. Surfin' UK is problematic because you have to fight the frigid north sea, a frankly terrifying volume of wee beige jobbies bobbing along beside you, and then the disdain and ridicule of your friends! Surfin' SK also has its challenges; namely the sheer amount of time it would take one to get to the damn beach with your surf board!!! This is the last of our mini Kofi run here while Kev is in England. As long as the plane doesn't go down and he doesn't enjoy his three weak pod break too much, we'll be back next week with our usual silliness for ya!If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Wonderful Land", or possibly, "Definitely not Regina"The eighteenth installment in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers a song submitted by our pal Al Dudeney; the slinky 50's instrumental rocker, "Wonderful Land" by The Shadows! Get your Hank and your Marvin, slip on those drainpipe trousers and smear a gob of brylcreme in your hair cos it's time to cut a rug!If you want to get involved in the Kofi Klub, you can make a donation here: https://ko-fi.com/seasidepodreview and let us know which song you want us to add to the wheel!
