Welcome back to Safer VRS Podcast! I'm Eric Thibodeaux, thrilled to have you join me this week. While I couldn't make it to the Women's Conference due to some exciting developments in our property management business, I'm eager to delve into today's topic: the delicate balance between being liked and professional responsibility.
Key Takeaways:
The Pitfalls of Seeking Approval: Reflecting on a past experience in a chemical plant, I learned the hard way about prioritizing being liked over adhering strictly to company policies. Seeking approval led me astray from protocol, highlighting the risks of placing popularity over professional standards.
Professional Integrity Over Popularity: As a safety professional, I aim to provide accurate, sometimes unpopular advice. While I value being liked, my primary goal is ensuring your safety and business success. I've learned to prioritize professional integrity over universal approval.
Unpopular Yet Necessary Advice: My commitment is to deliver the guidance and information crucial for your business, even if it's not what you want to hear. My role mandates tough conversations sometimes, and I've grown comfortable with that discomfort for the sake of your safety and success.
Exciting news! I've developed a comprehensive industry standard for vacation rental safety, a resource years in the making. Stay tuned for the big reveal next week, shaping the landscape of safety and loss prevention in the industry.

Welcome back to Safer VRS! I'm your host, Eric Thibodeaux, and I'm delighted to have you join us this week. I hope you had an absolutely fantastic Halloween.I've just returned from the Vacation Rental Manager Conference in Orlando, and despite the event's limited focus on safety, it was an incredible experience, teeming with valuable insights and networking opportunities.
This week's podcast kicks off a crucial series on "Slips, Trips, and Falls." It's essential to note that these types of accidents are responsible for a significant portion of potential hazards and injuries in the vacation rental industry.
But here's where I need your help. We're embarking on a unique project to understand and improve safety within the vacation rental industry. To do this, we need your firsthand knowledge and insights. Here's how you can get involved:
Part 1: Bathroom Slip Hazards
The spotlight falls on the slip resistance in bathrooms, especially around showers.
Your help is instrumental in gauging the real state of safety in these areas.
Send us pictures of the insides and outsides of bathtubs and showers, paying special attention to slip-resistant coatings and mats.
Part 2: Grab Bars and Safety Mats
An essential aspect of bathroom safety is the presence and condition of grab bars and safety mats.
Please take a moment to check your properties for these elements and their maintenance status.
Remember, the quality of these elements plays a significant role in ensuring guest safety in potentially wet bathroom conditions.
Part 3: Prioritizing Safety
Safety isn't just about preventing accidents; it's about implementing strong, consistent safety controls.
You're encouraged to establish reliable safety controls in your properties and consistently monitor and assess their effectiveness.
Embrace data-driven safety practices to safeguard the well-being of your guests, owners, and employees.
By participating in our study and sharing images of bathroom safety conditions in your properties, you are playing an active role in making the vacation rental experience safer for everyone. You may send the pictures to my email at eric@safervrs.com. Thank you for being part of our mission.

Welcome to the Safer VRS podcast and thank you for joining us. In this episode, I want to talk about the reciprocity of life and the importance of giving and receiving. This concept is not new, and I've been focusing on it for the past few years. It's something I've learned through a Mayan ancient wisdom called Ayni, which teaches us that the purpose of human life is to serve, show compassion, and help others. This is something I've embraced in my own life, from my 20-year commitment to serve in the church, to my work in the fire service, and now in the world of vacation rentals and safety.
But it's not just about giving, it's also about receiving. I realized that I was a good giver, but not such a good receiver. I would often refuse offers of help or gifts, and I realized that by not fully receiving, I was missing out on an opportunity for growth and connection with others. So in the past few years, I've worked on being more open to receiving, and it's made a big difference in my life.
I encourage you to think about the reciprocity of life and how you can both give and receive in your own life. Whether it's through acts of service, showing compassion to others, or simply being open to receiving help and support when it's offered, we can all play a part in creating a more connected and compassionate world. Thank you for listening, and I hope you'll join me for our next episode of Safer VRS podcast.
In this episode of the Safer VRS Podcast, I had the honor of hosting Tim Martin, who shared a remarkable story of survival during a wildfire in Maui. As a professional in the field of commercial insurance and risk management, Tim's insights into safety and emergency preparedness are invaluable.
Here are the key takeaways from our conversation: * Proactive Emergency Planning: Tim's experience underscores the importance of having an escape plan and being prepared for unexpected emergencies, even while on vacation. Situational awareness can make a significant difference in critical situations. * Stay Informed: Tim highlights the need to pay attention to weather forecasts and stay informed about local conditions. Whether you're a guest or a property owner, staying aware of potential risks is crucial. * Insurance and Risk Management: Tim recommends that property owners and managers ensure they have the proper insurance coverage in place. Additionally, maintaining fire breaks and using fire-resistant materials can significantly reduce risks in wildfire-prone areas. I want to express my gratitude to Tim for sharing his incredible story and valuable insights. And don't forget to mark your calendars for the book release of Vacation Rental Secrets, where I'm a contributor. But today's topic is a bit different yet crucial – understanding OSHA reporting for workplace incidents. Let's dive in.
In this episode, we explore the essential aspects of OSHA reporting for workplace incidents. Here's what you need to know:
We delve into the OSHA reporting criteria, which mandates the reporting of fatalities, severe injuries, amputations, and eye loss in the workplace. This reporting requirement extends to incidents whether or not they are work-related.
We discuss the significance of immediate reporting in the event of an employee's death on the job, emphasizing the importance of taking swift action once the employer is aware of the incident.
Exploring the realm of inpatient hospitalization, amputations, and eye loss, we highlight the need to report such incidents within 24 hours. Timeliness and accuracy are crucial during the reporting process.
We outline the reporting process itself, detailing the options available such as contacting the nearest OSHA office, using the OSHA hotline, or reporting incidents online. Developing internal procedures for reporting and identifying key contacts is equally vital.
Lastly, we explore how to navigate OSHA letters and investigations, providing insights into crafting effective responses to rapid response investigation letters, including explaining the issue, referencing relevant rules, outlining corrective actions, and indicating when the issue will be resolved.
While workplace incidents are infrequent in our industry, understanding OSHA's reporting guidelines is crucial for maintaining a culture of safety. Whether it's a fatality, severe injury, amputation, or eye loss, a proactive approach to reporting ensures the well-being of everyone involved.
