noone hid the fact that sumeria was a place. the sumerians became the akkadians who became the Assyrians who then became the Babylonians. they literally passed down the culture and information. the problem is that other groups intermingled with these later cultures and when they became enmeshed, the sumerian aspects were forgotten. a lot of the reliefs you see of demi gods wearing watches and carrying purses are the akkadians and people still confuse then with the sumerians.
