Gold Leaf PerformanceI make no bones about the fact that I've been very lucky this past few years of building content, running a podcast and connecting with brands I respect, only for most of the time, that turn in to friendships. The Porsche culture seems to attract a lot of just good people. Martin and David are no exception. It just so happens they developed the most exciting modification for normally aspirated 981 or 718 Cayman's EVER.When the GT4 RS came out, despite having no need for a track biased car, I was in love. It was everything I wanted Porsche to do with the platform. It's no secret that it had been throttled back to not step on big brother's toes.So whilst developing a fully carbon (more so than the OEM version) intake that mimics the 4RS doesn't immediately turn any N/A Cayman in to one, it creates an intensely exciting package. So much so that I put my money where my mouth is, after meeting the guys at the Nurburgring, hanging out with them and spending time in their demo GT4. It's THAT good. This episode unpicks their background, the approach they took, as well as their thoughts on the future of the industry. Nerd out my friends. NinemeisterSome episodes come about over a quick brew and a realisation that we're pals in waiting. Others whether it's because of logistics, scheduling or even personal reasons, it can take months, if not years to get locked in. You know what, that's OK! The important bit is that when we get it, we get a great episode that you people all love to listen to. The other thing that's almost entirely out of my hands is whether someone is willing to share their personal journey. Some people like me ol' mate Mike Brewer, are seasoned veterans and the bit I have to do is help breathe life in to a story well told. Some people find it hard and take a while to warm up. Then there's Colin Belton who even in the first few minutes owns the space in the room and claps himself in (to sync audio tracks). :DFor lots of reasons it's one of the most interesting conversations I've had on this journey through international Porsche culture that I've had.I'll take a moment out to credit Ninemeister, not Colin only but the rest of the team building the 9m cars. I looked closely as I always do and take notes on fitment of panel gaps, consistent use of fixings, fitment of rubber trim and even joins in carpet. The cars are really incredibly well put together. The team there should be proud of what they produce. Sadly for me, I didn't get the opportunity to go out in the 9mGT2 which was the point of the trip. Maybe I'll get an invite to drive the car and do a review. I suspect though, Colin is confident in the product enough to not want or need my review, and that's OK too. It's a beast of an episode though and we get through a lot! Stay tuned to hear about Colin's take on his interaction with the Singer team as they were about to go live and uncover their first ever car at the Weathertech Laguna Seca circuit. It's an anecdote to rule them all.You can find Ninemeister @Ninemeister_Porsche and ninemeistershop.com Listener note: There will be a shift in a couple of weeks to producing YouTube content so fear not, it is coming!I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. Level Motorsport WiringWay back, when the RENN550 was being dreamt up, I started reaching out to companies that seemed a good fit. Whether it was the ethos of the company or someone that headed it up, I was carefully seeking out people that would appreciate being involved in something like a carbon bodied, Lotus chassis'd, Porsche inspired sports car. Well Matt was one of those people. From the aesthetic of his instagram page to his obvious obsession with perfection, it just made sense to reach out and build bridges. He couldn't have been nicer! That meant a trip to South Wales to sit down and learn about his backstory and remind myself of what I know, and also expose where my knowledge reaches its limit; and it does. That's OK though! That's exactly when you decide whether to extend the build time and learn to do it, or employ the services of an expert but accept it'll cost more in the long run. It is super nerdy but that's what Tech Talk is all about. The intro picks up on the RennSporter T6 Transporter van build, as well as my co-hosting the upcoming Niners Live event at Boxengasse, with Boxengasse legends, Frank Cassidy and Annabel Tatnall. People I've grown really fond of over the past few years. That event is on the 20th of September so I'll see you there.I'll also be at the Legends Drivers Club "Sonderwunsch" event at Goodwood circuit on Monday 25th!You can find Boxengasse @Boxengasseco, Legends Drivers Club @Legends_drivers_club and Level Motorsport Wiring @Levelmsw_ on Insta! There will be a shift in a couple of weeks to producing YouTube content so fear not, it is coming!I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. KAMM Manufaktur!Sometimes episodes take months, even years to organise and shoot. Others - like this episode with KAMM founder Miklós (Miki) Kázmér, came together during a spontaneous moment where I'd finished a magazine shoot for the Renngineering Cayman S/E and knew that Miki was setting up at Boxengasse's annual Megaphonics event. With a couple of hours gap between the end of the mag shoot for 911 and Porsche World and needing to be back at Boxengasse HQ for a Michelin pre-show meal I figured I'd try to lock in an episode recording, even if it meant using mismatched audio equipment and sitting next to a group of drunk and happy tourists. What all that did though, was remove any sense of it being formal out of the equation and created a friendly atmosphere that I think we both enjoyed. You let me know whether the episode is as good as I think it is....So everything you wanted to know about the company building carbon fibre 912's - here it is... and as I normally say at the end of each intro "I'll catch you back up,,, at the end"I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. The BIG catch up!It's been a while... I know I know... the introduction says your weekly dose of Porsche culture and it's been anything other than weekly this year. There is a reason for all that though and this episode does a round up but also gives a proper explanation as to why that is. Despite being quiet on socials and almost as quiet on here and YouTube, it's been for a reason... Renngineering wasn't designed to just be a podcast or YouTube channel. It's always been about building the RENN550. At some point I had to sit down and figure out how to make that happen. Putting my heart and soul in to episodes was working to an extent but from a business perspective, unless you're Mat Armstrong, you're not getting paid a lot.I'm a great designer though and it's important to keep pushing on with that. So that's what I did... focused on building the business side up, that funds everything else.So here you go... the answer to all the questions and lots of exciting news!I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. Mike Brewer! There are some people that when you meet them, you either are impressed at their authenticity and how closely the on-screen persona matches the person you meet, or you feel a bit let down that it's an act. Well that's my take anyway.Of course there's a little turning it up to 11, but the man I've gotten to know over the past couple of years is pretty much the same guy you see on TV.Now on that... in the YouTube video episode coming out Saturday 3rd April 2025, I put a two second clip in the intro of the first Porsche I remember Edd and Mike working on. An Irish green targa. I must have been in my early 20's when I first saw that episode and I've seen it a few times. Never once did I think I'd be trading messages and chatting away like old friends in person. The thing I'm doing never ceases to amaze me.So grab a megapint (thanks Johnny Depp that still cracks me up), settle in and 'old aat yer 'and! You can find Mike at @mikebrewer One Automotive is at @oneautomotiveuk and @mikebrewermotorsI'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. Frank is back! It's been a while since Frank Cassidy has been on the pod. As I've said to him, our episode together is one of the ones that people mention to me most. Likewise, it's been an admission of Frank's that he enjoyed our chat more than any other "interview". Quotes because I try hard to avoid being an interviewer.Last time we caught up, Frank and I chatted about doing some episodes where it wasn't about him as a person, as we've done that, but actually our shared experiences. I suggested, based on the Niners Unplugged episode I appeared on, way back, that we do something on road trips. If you haven't watched the Niners Unplugged episode then go do that. It's pinned to my IG grid but can be found on the Boxengasse Niners Unplugged YouTube channel. In that episode, which generally goes well, Frank asks one of his standard questions "So tell me where you've been in the car..." insert pregnant pause as I scramble to remember even something basic. Not great. But I did respond by immediately planning a trip. That trip was recorded and at this point has had about 20000 views on YouTube. It didn't stop there and in the bank right now, is last year road trip. That episode will be out soon enough. We also catch up on Megaphonics and the plans both short and long-term.So here it is, Frank and I talking all things road trips. You can find Frank at @frankrcassidy and Boxengasse at @boxengasseco I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. Renngineering LIVE!This latest episode was shot at Porsche Club Great Britain where in front a studio audience, myself and two other fairly knowledgeable owners break down our approach to our cars.We start off with Kai who owns a 2.0 base model 718 Cayman and went for a big power approach. For the 987 we've got Simon who competes in sprint events and hillclimbs so more of a focus on lightweight. I cover my car to an extent and talk about the specialness I've been trying to create with that car.We wrap up with a Q&A where the audience got the opportunity to dig a little deeper in to our insights and experiences. You can find Porsche Club Great Britain at porscheclubgb.com or @porscheclubgb on Instagram. It's very much in the spirit of old Top Gear this episode so if you get chance, head over to YouTube and watch the episode to get the full experience and see the cars we're talking about.I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. What was it like to install the Gold Leaf Performance 4RS intake on a 981?I didn't have a great deal of choice last week. I wore the same scruffy garage clothes for days on end, bounced from day job to the Renngineering Cayman build, and back again.I set myself the target of collecting and fitting the beautifully designed and made GT4 RS style intake system on my car within a week. A lofty goal, particularly because I'm absolutely anal about getting things right. Close just ain't good enough.I didn't quite hit my one week goal but only by a day.Putting it simply - I couldn't be happier.I learned something in the process. All you need to do to have a successful reel is post up a short clip of a car revving to the redline. OK, I'm reasonably sure a Mitsubishi Galant 2.0 from 1994 wouldn't quite have got people excited but this certainly did.I've since put 250 miles on the car and it's perfect. Everything works just as it should. Sounds immense. Looks even better. I'm a particular fan of the spec I chose as well,Agate grey side window podsMatte carbon throughoutGold pinstripe on the engine coverIn this episode I also pick up on the next few episodes being shot and some potentially game-changing news for Renngineering, that could... be the start of the shift towards it being a full time job.I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. Your Porsche Stories is BACK!I love these episodes. They don't happen as frequently as I would like (massive hint there) so if you have a really cool Porsche or there's a great family story behind it, or perhaps the car itself has a really great backstory - I want to hear from you. Drop me a DM or email and we'll find some time.Every now and again, I'll take the lead and when I see something cool, will reach out to the owner and invite them on. That's what happened with Bruce.I genuinely didn't know about his Brumos and Hurley Haywood connections when I messaged him, nor did I realise how nice a guy he was. All just lucky surprises. So, if you want to hear about a 250'000 mile '87 911 then grab that coffee and have a listen on any podcast streaming service.I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. Finally... FINALLY... The Tuthill Episode! We're back with a new season, and I wanted to kick this one off with a big bang. What's a bigger bang than a rally driving legend that is just crazy enough to build an 11000rpm aircooled 911, run an ice driving event and has time left over to build a modern take on the Porsche GT1, the Tuthill GT ONE.More than that though, the company itself carry out restoration builds, the SC RS, the 2.0 cup, and are again, just about mad enough to say yes to (almost) anything! We get in to Richard's early memories of rolling a VW Beetle in the fields behind where we were sat as we recorded the episode. We talked about him getting politely kicked out of school, all the way through to scaling up from a well respected brand within a small community to a globally renowned business with clients all around the world. It also, at times, felt and seemed like a job interview. I genuinely feel like it's one of the best podcast episodes that I've recorded to date. I hugely proud of the progress I've made as a podcaster over the past few years and I truly hope you enjoy listening as much as I have making it. Mick jumps back on the good ship Renngineering. It's always fun us two getting together to rattle through what's going on in our lives but when Porsche release a do not drive statement just in time for a Waffle, it was always going to be good.We also gave our thoughts on the GT3 992.2 and the 911 Carrera T. Picture this... you've found a car that sounds like a scam, but it's a Singer style shell, sat at Tuthill Porsche. It's reasonable money but you're taking it on, basically on trust. You then don't want to build a Singer tribute and go about building something yourself. That's what Paul Leyton did with this 911!Some people have a natural way about them, that makes you feel that nothing is worth getting too upset about, and that it'll all work out. Well this episode gives you about ten of those examples. The output from all of that work is an absolutely stunning car. Genuinely one of the nicest "home builds" and I'm reluctant to use that term, that I've ever seen. It's also now for sale. As is one of my kidneys. We follow Paul from the early days of building VW Beetles, through a load of flips, to his one of ten 964 cab, his 993 build and this, his complete one off. You'd be forgiven for thinking that little trip is cool as it is, but you really do need to shoot over to YouTube to check the interior out. It's amazing.A big thanks to Paul for being a good friend and for spending time with me. An even bigger thanks for when we caught up once the new engine was in and being dialled in and chucking me the keys. Yes, you guessed it, that's on YouTube as well. You can find Paul at @dooley.vw on instagram. So if you listen, and then check out the pics on the Renngineering insta, or watch on YouTube and want to buy the car, shoot him a DM.Thanks for listening.I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. A big personality from a big man! Some episodes you listen back to and find yourself smiling a big dumb smile. That's what this episode did. Partly because it was so useful for me to learn about air-cooled Porsche engines, or at least start that journey but also because he's such a good laugh to be around. You'll hear us talk about Chris and his dad's background in racing, including a Jacky Ickx Le Mans winning engine build, Chris's own motorsport career but also how he's part mechanically minded and part artisan. Like a BFG sized Roald Dahl. Chris takes me through the pro's and con's of all the different eras of six cylinder P-car engine and what to consider before almost coming to a conclusion. Almost. No doubt we'll debate it further as things develop, but for now at least it's food for thought.Bonus easter egg for the OG's that wait for the post credits. You can find Wrightune at @wightune on socials and wrightune.co.ukThanks for listening.I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. The comeback kidWhat a strange couple of weeks! With an episode that was difficult to record, difficult to edit, and difficult to put out, you couldn't make up the u-turn that came after. With that pause and reflection in the bank, and the need to buy a new daily runabout, particularly for the winter, it was looking more and more like buying a VX220 or Elise donor car for the RENN550 was going to be a 2025 thing. The budget for a donor isn't huge, with the early phase of the build but self funded. That's why monetising both the pod and YouTube channel are so important.Cars have come and gone, but mostly written off/totalled cars. For most cars that's a problem. Lotus cars tend to be written off for silly things like lights, small cracks in the fibreglass clam shells etc. So whilst not attractive to a potential future owner, as a development car not a disaster. Still, I did want a straight car with a clean title/V5.I missed a few cars by minutes, until one popped up online at the exact moment I was scrolling away. Within seconds I'd messaged "I'll have it!". Roadworthy, serviced and MOT'd and with 74000 miles and with a clean title - it's perfect. So there we have it. I'll be dallying a scruffy old VX220 whilst at the same time 3D scanning it so I have data to play with.Als0, in between the last episode and this, I had two episodes shot with both Tuthill Porsche's Richard Tuthill and a second episode with Frank Cassidy. Both who told stories of being focused on the goal and being willing to take some knocks along the way.Time for me to take a few days off and relax in Greece, but I'll be back next week with more of season 3 after this brief interlude. Thanks for listening.I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. The honest episode.I remember listening to Porsche Cooled with Michael Bath just before Renngineering started and hearing him talk about being tired and it being a pretty labour intensive thing to do, putting out a podcast weekly. Blindly positive, I thought how hard can it be!? Turns out there are two answers to that. If you have a team around you making it all happen and you can be the host, pretty sensible. However, if you're a pretty normal working guy or gal, and having to do it all, well that's intense. Not to do things be halves, I chose to start a channel where I go and see and chat to these big companies, fantastic independents, or cool collectors. I absolutely love doing it and I'd play to mosquitos as Sheryl Crow says. I just wouldn't put pressure on myself to put an episode out a week! The problem is... if you don't, you won't grow. If you don't hammer social media, you won't grow. If you aren't shamefully self promoting, you won't grow.So this episode is a bit of a reflection of all of that. I don't like leaving things with a negative tone, so I thought I'd share a chat that I recorded when I went to visit Simon, who owns Built By Basil. Another normal, down to earth guy doing what he loves and trying to make it a success.I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. This week is a break in the big episodes and I grab Mick for some good old fashioned Waffle. With absolutely no planned conversation, we surprised ourselves and found that there was quite a bit to talk through. We start by trying to figure out what Porsche is trying to achieve by forcing brands that are woven in to the brand to no longer market their cars as a Porsche, even when they're built off one.We chat about Mick seeing the new 992.2 just last weekend and his first thoughts. That led us nicely on to how much they are these days and what you could buy as an alternative, given how much prices have come off recently. That then Segway'd in to what you could buy for £100k. I for once wasn't too reckless where as Mick had full confidence in the brand. We wrap with some reflections on the current Formula 1 rankings and the weekend ahead.I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. I appreciate all of you and always welcome your comments, questions and thoughts. I agonised over who to use for interior trimming. With any company I choose to use for my Outlaw Cayman, the hope is that I'll have a great experience so that when it comes to building the RENN550, I've got the relationships and trust in place to know the product at the end is what I'm looking for.I'm frustratingly difficult as a customer. I have such high expectations of people that it's rare that I'm completely satisfied. That's not to say everyone is awful. Far from it. But, companies are trying to make a profit, so you either pay for that last 2% of quality with 80% more outlay. Or you accept great, but not perfect, as the end result. The other part of it, is the person behind the company. What are they like? Are they good to their staff? Are they willing to stand behind their work, or come up with excuses, or worse, lie... Yes, by the way I've had that during the Cayman build. The great news is that Dave, of Dave The Trimmer, ticks all the boxes.I first saw Dave's 964 at Flat 6 show at Goodwood Circuit. I was bowled over. I'm sure most people look at his Guards Red, low AF 964 and take a peak at the interior and think it's nice... and move on.I spent 15 minutes just looking at the interior alone. Trying to get my head around how he managed to ghost fade pasha on grey Alcantara. How the stitch was arrow straight and even at every seam. Then I spoke to him and he humoured the perfectionist in me. No... scratch that...reverse it... he seemed to enjoy the challenge. It's fair to say that throughout the process of designing the trimming plans for my car, we didn't quite get on the same page. But there was trust on both sides. The result? It's a show stopper. People seem to appreciate the aesthetic of the Outlaw Cayman, but go nuts for the interior.I just can't wait to see what he does with a Lotus/550 Spyder hybrid. It's going to be wild.I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. I appreciate all of you and always welcome your comments, questions and thoughts. Flipping heck.Sometimes you get to speak to someone and wonder what living their life must have been like. Chatting to Graeme and his wife Kerry, at Porsche in the Park 2024, allowed me (and you) to get an insight in to that. At least a little bit...From crashing his first car and putting himself firmly in hospital after passing his driving test 20 days prior, to racing at Daytona, to the Porsche Championship and winning races (draws breath), to collecting and owning a Porsche Carrera GT, Graeme has the t-shirt(s), the cups and the scars to prove all.I said it before, but I'll say it for the bleachers... The cars are cool, but the people are cooler.Grab a coffee. Put your feet up and settle in.I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far. Barry Hart. A name you may have heard but possibly not. Hartech... if you've owned a Porsche, or even thinking about an early model water-cooled P-car, it's highly likely you've heard the name.If you've listened for a while, you'll know that Renngineering isn't only about the tech side of Porsche ownership. It's about the people and culture that goes behind it. When you've been working on these cars as long as Barry Hart (78 years young), there isn't a lot you haven't seen before and don't know. He's forgotten more than I'll ever know. He's also one of life's really lovely human beings. Not satisfied with being a Doc from Back to the Future level of engineering mind, he built a team of passionate enthusiasts. Then nurtured them in to also being geniuses. That family feel comes across when you listen to the episode. You can watch this episode on YouTube, where you'll some of the engineering work and images of Barry's cars and the great man himself. Not only that, but this was the second episode shot at Porsche in the Park! The first, earlier in the day being the owner of a Carrera GT! So, if you hear some background noise, that is to be expected when recording a live event.I'll take a moment to thank you all for listening so far.
