Description

Each week I discuss itineraries, travel hacks, money-saving tips, and practical advice, all recorded during a 14-month family trip to Europe and Southeast Asia. Each show is a travel guide for a place we visited. Now that we are back home in the States, the episodes are less frequent, but I will try to keep the travel content coming for 2024 and will have some flashback episodes in case you missed Vietnam, Turkey, Thailand, Spain, Czech Republic, Italy, England, Iceland, Sweden, and others during the first airing.

In this episode, I go over the things that most shocked me on our trip.  We talk about everything from costs, mosquitos, to bidets.   We’re back from our trip now, and I’m exhausted, but I cannot wait to keep this show going so we can keep our travel dreams alive. The second part is a rebroadcast of the Amalfi Coast Episode–my most listened-to episode. The headlines segment is now a separate show!  https://open.spotify.com/episode/6uMrdNRuPwBuJrqn4kRXvf?si=YZE3FD9-Sxuj4O2jUkFu9A If you want to play the currency markets, but don’t want to open a foreign bank account, WTD highly recommends Wise service.  Click on the link below to find out more and buy some Euros or other currency.  When you need the Euros for that next trip, they’ll be there, and you’ve bought when the dollar was strong. https://wise.com/invite/u/jameso1983 SteriPEN is the WTD-approved, UV water purifier pen for your travels in developing nations.  It’s great for doing dish rinses, and keeping everyone hydrated when buying large bottles of water isn't feasible. This week, I’m recording from Mallorca, Spain in my last location cast.  I can’t wait to share this island with the listeners.  We’ve had so much fun here, and in Spain in general. I share my closing thoughts on our month in Spain, and why I was somewhat surprised by how enjoyable of a country it was.   I then get into a dos and don’t segment that should be helpful if you plan to travel to Spain and/or Mallorca.  If you know of anyone who is traveling to these places, please share this episode.  Thank you for your help in growing this podcast. And in bloopers, I recall my hike in Vietnam when I ruined my favorite jogging shoes. World Travel Dad is shocked by the lack of tackiness of the global site of Mont St. Michel.  Mont St. Michel nocturnes delivers a magical evening. The good weather during the Omaha Beach visit creates a nice contrast with the somberness of the events of the place. Bayeux deserves more than one day!  A gem of a town that escaped the bombs of WWII.  The family visits a market and buys fresh oysters.   Join us next week for a trip to Loire Valley, Villandry, and the Dordogne, en route to extreme Southern France.
Southern Sweden

Southern Sweden

Deep dive into Southern Sweden.  WTD goes to some towns that haven't seen many Americans!  The family gets haircuts and does a zipline tour.  Find out more information about the costs of eating and drinking in Sweden, plus some tips on economizing your trip and why traveling is different from vacationing. Link to the new travel post about off-the-beaten-path Southern Sweden.  WTD talks about Sweden's tax rate to finish the show, specifically estate taxes and top marginal tax rate myths about Sweden.
On today's quick hit episode, World Travel Dad's family meets with a cousin in Grunerlokka at a Godt Brod.    The ensuing trip to the top of Frognerseteren is full of enjoyment and value. World Travel Dad also criticizes the typical blog posts designed only for SEO rules and wonders why he didn't read anything about the Frognersteren stop!  The take away is that locals should be consulted whenever possible for a valuable trip. Also, the family heads to a swimming beach for an afternoon of being a temporary local. Join us for a quick and valuable look at a fantastic city, Oslo, Norway!
On this week’s episode WTD goes with his family to Iceland.  Find out what they discovered in the landscape, the people, and the cuisine. On a drive around the Snaefelsnes, World Travel Dad is shocked at what he sees.  Are the waterfalls really that special? The crew sees puffins and eats fresh scallops for lunch, straight from the bottom of the ocean! Finally, we explore the quaint town of Stykkisholmur and its harbor which is sure to please all ages.  There’s a terrific restaurant in Stykkisholmur. Next stop Oslo, Norway!

Back in the US, I continue to go over my notes and prior podcasts to pull out the useful information.  This week, I cover Northern Vietnam, which was a show topic for several weeks last February. Highlights were Hoi An, Phong Nha, Sa Pa, and Hanoi.  If you have any further questions about how to make a trip to Vietnam happen, see my instagram post about the pros and cons of Vietnam.  It is sure to guide you in the right direction.   In the second part of the show, I clipped some of the highlights from our trip to Northern Vietnam for a trip down memory lane.  From the scooters, to the beer and food costs, and the overall natural and cultural beauty, Vietnam is amazing. SteriPEN is the WTD-approved, UV water purifier pen for your travels in developing nations.  It’s great for doing dish rinses, and keeping everyone hydrated when buying large bottles of water isn't feasible. This week, I’m recording from Mallorca, Spain.  I’m not ready to do a full episode on this great place, so I wanted to address the top question I hear when we talk about our trip:  how did you pack?   The first half of the show is all about some of the nuts and bolts of preparing to leave the country, from insurance, to visa planning, to transportation planning itself. Then, I break down the things we packed that were brilliant, contrasted with the things I packed that were foolish.   And in bloopers, we were finally hit by petty crime! The headlines segment is now a separate show!  https://open.spotify.com/episode/6uMrdNRuPwBuJrqn4kRXvf?si=YZE3FD9-Sxuj4O2jUkFu9A This week I’m in Valencia, Spain!  This town boasts more than 300 sunny days per year, has tons of arts, architecture, and unique Spanish culture, and is well-worth checking out. We went to the largest aquarium in Europe called the Centro Aquitico and were impressed.  We also explored various markets, parks, and placas where locals and tourists relax and enjoy life. I review the beach, the museum of science, as well as the restaurant and drinking culture of this city. This is our final country on the trip, and we’re just soaking in this great country and enjoying the final moments of our trip.  Thank you for being a part of this special project.  We’re not done yet. Also, I admit to paying WAY too much for baklava in the Istanbul airport. Then, I go to Mont St. Michel.  This is the destination I didn’t expect to like as much as I did.  There is a specific way I recommend doing this site.  Stay tuned to hear our two-day itinerary, and check out this episode of Join Us In France I did all about our France trip.   If you want to play the currency markets, but don’t want to open a foreign bank account, WTD highly recommends Wise service. The headlines segment is now a separate show!  https://open.spotify.com/episode/6uMrdNRuPwBuJrqn4kRXvf?si=YZE3FD9-Sxuj4O2jUkFu9A Westerners need all the help they can get when traveling to this majority Muslim country.  In this episode, I cover the basics to get you ready for a trip to Turkey. We first will cover the food, from Adana Kebabs, to Lamuchans, to Gozlemes, and what are Pides?  Are mezzelers a good idea? Then the drinking culture.  These people are crazy about their black “Turk Cay” (pronounced “Chai”).  Alcohol is consumed sparingly here, but we cover the basics:  Beer, wine, Raki, of course. Driving in Turkey is pretty easy, but there are some pitfalls and things you should know just like driving in any foreign country.   What is the tipping culture?  Public transportation?  What are the best places to visit?  Is communication a problem?  We will cover it all this week, plus a bonus point on the safety of Turkey in lieu of Bloopers. If you want to play the currency markets, but don’t want to open a foreign bank account, WTD highly recommends Wise service.  Click on the link below to find out more and buy some Euros or other currency.  When you need the Euros for that next trip, they’ll be there, and you’ve bought when the dollar was strong. https://wise.com/invite/u/jameso1983 Have you ever considered taking a break from the rat race?  Find out how we did it, and how you can too!  Read helpful and concise blog articles about cooking, skiing, and traveling with your kids at Some Wonder link tree.   https://msha.ke/somewondertravel/ As always, please subscribe and share with any friends who like to travel and have ever thought about longer trips.   Instagram follow https://www.instagram.com/worldtravelpapa/ World Travel Dad offers no investment or legal advice.  Nothing said in this program shall be construed as professional advice of any nature.  If you require specific, professional advice please seek the appropriate entities.
The headlines segment is now a separate show!  https://open.spotify.com/episode/6uMrdNRuPwBuJrqn4kRXvf?si=YZE3FD9-Sxuj4O2jUkFu9A This week’s throwback episode is a D-day commemoration.  On June 6, 1944, the Allies stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, and started the six-week Battle of Normandy.  We now have so many freedoms thanks to these efforts, and nowhere is this more appreciated than this part of France.  Join us for WTD’s remembrance. Plus, I talk more about Prague, Czech Republic, an enjoyable city.  My recent episode on this trip received positive feedback so I decided to dig further into the planning that should go into a trip to this city.   No bloopers this week! I'm sure there will be plenty next week, because, well, it's me.
