Entrust your fate to the big, mechanical hands of the cards. Listener CrossZeta made a very efficient request, because we'll probably be rolling Cardfight Vanguard designs for years without rolling out (given that they're only a percentage of the requests anyway). Then again, maybe not- it's fun to tackle one-offs, but we're trying to tackle lines of robo, and there may not be that many lines within the game. Time will tell! It's been a while since we've had an episode about a single machine with no variants or upgrades. And one so deserving of them, too! I get that the appeal of the Bael is elegant simplicity. But the Bael exists! Let's have a Bael High Mobility, or a Bael Cannon, or a Bael Full Armor! I know that's not how IBO designs are built or named. I don't care. I just like seeing cool designs be iterated on, and I am being deprived of that. This is bullying, they're bullying me. It's not our first tokusatsu mecha, but it might be our most charming. King Joe (great name, by the way) is coming at us straight from Ultraman, a combining robot that proved an instant hit. I love the way having to have a real dude in a suit affects the design of toku robots. Personality is an inevitable consequence. Maybe the red I see is not the same as the red you see. And maybe I first encountered the G-Arcane in Gundam Versus for the PS4 and haven't thought about its color scheme since then. Dylan's right about some things, wrong about some other things, but it's always a good idea to reexamine your assumptions. Sometimes you do it for the boys. Sometimes you do it for the 'Gram. And sometimes? You do it For the Barrel. Today we discuss the designs of a Gundam AU that, I don't wanna tell tales outta school, but might possibly have been so badly written that its mechanical designer walked away in the middle of the project. It's a shame, because that designer was clearly one of the few parts of this project actually killing it. I think I forgot to say it on air- maybe I didn't? It feels kinda familiar? But this is a double request, from listeners muffinlord and Gaiseric! A big thank you to the Patreon creator Byston Well Stories, who can also be found on Bluesky, for your hard work translating For the Barrel and uploading scans of it, we really appreciate it! You should also check out their current work translating Tomino's Byston Well... stories. I guess it's all there in the name already. Alright, alright, get your jokes out of the way. This manta ray lookin' dude is one of SEED's design successes, so I won't have you teasing them too hard. Expect the usual SEED issues- line art errors, slightly nonsensical weapon details, an element here or there that would improve the whole design if it were simply removed- but the GOOhN's alright with us. I didn't PLAN to make this the Victor Show. Sometimes these things just... happen. Hey, if we're gonna do card game designs, we should do like. Netrunner, and Yu-Gi-Oh!. And Magic I suppose, I'll be honest, I don't really care about Magic. I did in high school, and it's not like I've "grown out of it" or anything, I've just lost interest. But maybe it has some cool mecha cards. That could potentially sway me. You can find a video version of this podcast for free on Scanline Media’s Patreon! Friend friend friend friend friend! Who would have guessed that this fun enough one-off design from ZZ would become one of the most beloved parts of Turn A? It's fun to discover whole worlds you previously knew nothing of. The listener whose request we rolled this week made the request a few years ago at this point, and sent along some art of the cards they were interested in. And I was like, "oh, there are a decent number of these, huh?" Friends, I had no idea. Once we looked into the topic... wow. This card game has a lot of robots in it. I should dial back the Gundam AGE hate. Even its titular Gundam line has a few winners, and the AGE Gundams are the worst designs in the series. The other mobile suits, there are some clear winners! I'd count the G-Bouncer among their number. And it's not fair to hold the writing against them. ...Mostly. I'm sorry, the Freedom DOES have to suffer for the crime of the Rainbow Beams of Peace. It's time for Peche & Pals! The UC Engage art style is often a bit off-putting to us, but we're always here for tinkering with existing designs to make new ones. Riffing on designs is one of the great joys of being a mecha fan, if you ask me. But how wild to go is always a question you've gotta keep in mind. These machines? Not too wild. Shuttles, shuttles, shuttles. Oh, sure, we do some cleanup, and some Kelvinverse designs, but mostly this episode is dedicated to little boxes for like two to twenty people. It's a bit of a break to our format, because we usually don't give machines with the same design new entries just because they have a new name. But c'mon, live a little. C'mon. He's just a little mecha! Also it's his birthday, he's a little birthday mecha! The Stuka/Goblin fills a niche I didn't realize I needed: short, chunky mobile suit. Space. The bar on your keyboard. This is an episode of the podcast Mechanista in G. Its continuing mission gets more and more unclear with each episode. And this goof has outlived its usefulness. Sometimes even Gundam Crossbone has good ideas. And they may not be good ideas leading up to them, or even following them. But for one shining moment, you get a cartridge-powered pile bunker leg driving a massive beam saber down, and everything is ok. ...Ok, that's unfair to the F89, that thing's fine. But boy. I guess I would describe the Radiant Wave Surger as having both "the power" and "the touch." And it certainly gets "ready for battle." But can it "beat the Black Knight" if it itself IS a Black Knight? Y'know, stupid question. On two fronts. First of all, of course a person can always defeat themselves. Second, why am I doing an extended bit about the theme of the pinball machine Black Knight 2000? You can find a video version of this podcast for free on Scanline Media’s Patreon! Now, listen. It would not be entirely unfair to call me a weeb. I don't like the term, but y'know, lord knows I enjoy plenty of Japanese media. But that's kinda it, right? And Japanese food, that's good too. But I'm not out here obsessing over the code of bushido like SOME Americans. I wouldn't want to name names. It could be ANYONE under Mr. Bushido's mask. There's no identity crisis to be had here, because this show has long since extended its reach past just mecha... but these machines don't have pilots! They are remote controlled though, which is certainly a kind of piloting. It's a pedantic distinction, but it can be fun to consider how the categorization works out. The machines of Robot Alchemic Drive seem a-okay to me. A real shame the Gllang apparently sucks, it's sick. I did a bad job of giving credit on the ep- this was a request from listener Baavetti!
