Immense damage can be done by these individuals leading to the abuse of the congregation as well as the destruction of the church in some cases. In this 39th episode of Beyond the Vow, Nick and Janelle examine some of the thought processes behind the ban on wedding rings within the Conservative Holiness Movement (CHM). The ring has been a point of contention. We examine a book by Dr. Dale Yocum, "On Pleasing the Heavenly Bridegroom," and its influence on some of the thinking behind the stand taken on rings within the CHM. Our goal with this episode is not to force a view on anyone but to provide and highlight information that we have found, as well as some of the teachings from the early church fathers and other historical writings on the subject. In this 23rd episode of Beyond the Vow, Nick and Janelle discuss "faith builders" which are events that strengthen our faith in God. Nick discusses a few of these events from his own past as well as how God has helped him overcome some negative experiences.
In this episode of Beyond the Vow, Nick and Janelle discuss "Heart talks to Girls" a book written by Julia Shelhamer around the 1930's. This book has played a part in providing an idea of what an early understanding of sex for girls was like within the conservative holiness movement (CHM) and the lasting influence that this book and others like it, have had to this day.
In this episode of Beyond the Vow, Nick and Janelle dig a bit deeper into some of the claims that E. E. Shelhamer made in his book, "Heart Talks to Boys" (which we covered in our last episode). Along the way we discuss his claim concerning 100,000 boys being sent to the insane asylum annually, as well as some of the documented early claims for why you could legitimately be sent to the insane asylum. We also look at some of the early treatments for patients within the asylums.
