Description

SomethingAwful.com is one of the foundational websites of modern internet culture: the earliest memes, inside jokes, and modes of communication that grace and plague the internet today can trace their roots back to the sprawling forums of this illustrious website.

Hosted by Jay Brandstetter and Winslow Dumaine, this podcast dredges up the most notable threads from the depths of the forums. We delve into the absurd architecture of Groverhaus, explore the very beginning of 4Chan, the early days of master poster Dril, examine the discovery and ruination of Chris-Chan, and recount the day when the despised owner of the website, Richard “Lowtax“ Kyanka fought the disgraced filmmaker Uwe Boll in a boxing match, and more. We’re diving into the archives so you don’t have to.

Winslow Dumaine is a comedian and illustrator out of Chicago. He’s opened for Kyle Kinane, Dave Ross, and Sam Tallent, and toured with Derek Sheen. His debut work of fiction is The Tarot Restless, a hand illustrated deck of tarot cards and a book of short stories. His next work is a cooperative tabletop card game called RESTLESS, the discord for which is available here.

Jay Brandstetter is an internet historian and online content creator out of his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. In addition to a lifetime of firsthand research on the Something Awful forums and elsewhere, he created the popular Twitter account "crazy ass moments in Something Awful history", has over 100,000 views on YouTube, and over 3 million on TikTok. His ongoing work is The Greymuzzle Archives, a series of long-form interviews of elder members of the furry fandom.

We're caught up to the 21st century, and anti-pornography lawyer Jack Thompson is now anti-video game lawyer Jack Thompson. For gamers of a certain age, the name Jack Thompson still provokes reflexive sneers. Despite being permanently disbarred almost 20 years ago, this former Florida lawyer still looms large when we look back and wonder why the gamers are Like That. We're going to be talking about the time the internet made Jack Thompson's dream game, but before we get there we have over a decade of litigation against radio and the music industry to get through. From openly gay liberal shock jock Neil Rogers to rap pioneer Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew, Thompson spent the first part of his life being publicly humiliated by people way cooler than him.Get over 50 bonus episodes of IFTI for just $1 at https://www.patreon.com/IFTIpodYou can review this episode's document with sources (and pictures) at https://tinyurl.com/IFTIPodModestVideoGameProposalSubmit episode concepts at https://tinyurl.com/IFTIpodIdeas, or contact the show directly at IFTIpod@gmail.comCreated and Hosted byWinslow Dumaine - www.winslowdumaine.com/Jay Brandstetter - linktr.ee/jaybrandstetterProduced and Edited by:Steve Brown - linktr.ee/killhamsterIntro and Outro music is "in failure" by steveisbroke off of their album "steve and his week of wonders", used with permission. https://steveisbroke.bandcamp.com/album/steve-and-his-week-of-wonders Hosted on Acast. One of the upsides of not having kids is not having to give a shit about childrens television. But back in the 2000s, a bunch of grown-ups got mad at Sesame Street for something they Children's Television Workshop didn't actually do because someone on the internet said it happened. Fredrick Brennan has created 8chan. Today would have been Fredrick Brennan's 32nd birthday. He died in his sleep last month, so here's Fred's partner to memorialize the 8chan founder who realized he was wrong, got out, and did what he could to take down the monster he helped create. His family wanted to keep the news private until now for personal reasons, so we recorded this a couple weeks after his death but are only releasing it now that the news has officially broken. Don't worry, there's no crying in the episode. Unfortunately, the audio quality is really bad because due to the circumstances Jay didn't get to record in his usual spot. I'm sorry that one of our most historically significant episodes is also one of our worst-sounding ones, but given the circumstances I hope you will forgive.Get over 50 bonus episodes of IFTI for just $1 at https://www.patreon.com/IFTIpodYou can review this episode's document with sources (and pictures) at https://tinyurl.com/IFTIPodFredMemorialDocSubmit episode concepts at https://tinyurl.com/IFTIpodIdeas, or contact the show directly at IFTIpod@gmail.comCreated and Hosted byWinslow Dumaine - www.winslowdumaine.com/Jay Brandstetter - linktr.ee/jaybrandstetterProduced and Edited by:Steve Brown - linktr.ee/killhamsterIntro and Outro music is "in failure" by steveisbroke off of their album "steve and his week of wonders", used with permission. https://steveisbroke.bandcamp.com/album/steve-and-his-week-of-wonders Hosted on Acast. It's 2016. You work at a Murphy Bed store. You have to go to an after-hours the party the owner is throwing for his business partner. The internet is for everybody, even pretty people. That said, when you see a three-parter focused on 2003's Miss Oregon you know things are going to get weird. You don't have to be Jean Piaget or Lev Vygotsky to appreciate how amusingly off-kilter a child's view of the world can be. In 2009, an emerging independent cartoonist named Ethan Nicolle teamed up with his five year-old little brother to illustrate the wacky stories he would make up. The internet loved it, but Ethan's later projects turned out to be a little less universally-beloved. This week on I'M FROM THE INTERNET, a cautionary tale about how promising young talent ends up working with Rob Schneider.Get over 40 bonus episodes of IFTI for just $1 at https://www.patreon.com/IFTIpodYou can review this episode's document with sources (and pictures) at https://tinyurl.com/IFTIPodAxeCopDocSubmit episode concepts at https://tinyurl.com/IFTIpodIdeasFor inquiries, contact the show directly at IFTIpod@gmail.comCreated and Hosted byWinslow Dumaine - www.winslowdumaine.com/Jay Brandstetter - linktr.ee/jaybrandstetterProduced and Edited by:Steve Brown - linktr.ee/killhamsterIntro and Outro music is "in failure" by steveisbroke off of their album "steve and his week of wonders", used with permission. https://steveisbroke.bandcamp.com/album/steve-and-his-week-of-wonders Hosted on Acast. Since 1996, The ChildCare Action Project has reviewed over 1400 films using the factually accurate and objectively correct WISDOM scale. From R-rated horror films to G-rated kids movies, lay pastor Thomas Carder has performed decades of cinematic kabbalah and selflessly shared the results with the internet. Car dealerships sucking has been a staple of comedy for as long as the automobile has existed, so why should the internet change that? When a Scottsdale, Arizona car dealership tried to back out of an eBay auction in 2003 it united the domestic and import automotive communities of America in a common cause: Making sure MarkD got his custom 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.Get over 40 bonus episodes of IFTI for just $1 at https://www.patreon.com/IFTIpodYou can review this episode's document with sources (and pictures) at https://tinyurl.com/IFTIPodMarkMitsubishiDocSubmit episode concepts at https://tinyurl.com/IFTIpodIdeasFor inquiries, contact the show directly at IFTIpod@gmail.comCreated and Hosted byWinslow Dumaine - www.winslowdumaine.com/Jay Brandstetter - linktr.ee/jaybrandstetterProduced and Edited by:Steve Brown - linktr.ee/killhamsterIntro and Outro music is "in failure" by steveisbroke off of their album "steve and his week of wonders", used with permission. https://steveisbroke.bandcamp.com/album/steve-and-his-week-of-wonders Hosted on Acast. Living in the age of high profile remasters and rereleases, it can be easy to forget how difficult it used to be to get old games. In the late 1990s a Thai woman named Sarinee Achavanuntakul launched a website that would give a generation of gamers access to thousands of classic titles for free, despite the best attempts of the video game industry's lobbying group to shut it down. If that wasn't cool enough, she's been spending the past couple decades fighting to make the internet a better place for journalists under the Thai monarchy. If you pay attention to the internet, you're probably really sick of hearing about Elon Musk. While his many public failures and embarassments have been making headlines throughout the 2020s, in the 2010s a slightly more respected Elon Musk bankrolled an internet satire startup helmed by former The Onion leadership. It was called Thud!, and there's a reason you've probably never heard of it.Get over 40 bonus episodes of IFTI for just $1 at https://www.patreon.com/IFTIpodYou can review this episode's document with sources (and pictures) at https://tinyurl.com/IFTIpodThudDocSubmit episode concepts at https://tinyurl.com/IFTIpodIdeasFor inquiries, contact the show directly at IFTIpod@gmail.comCreated and Hosted byWinslow Dumaine - www.winslowdumaine.com/Jay Brandstetter - linktr.ee/jaybrandstetterProduced and Edited by:Steve Brown - linktr.ee/killhamsterIntro and Outro music is "in failure" by steveisbroke off of their album "steve and his week of wonders", used with permission. https://steveisbroke.bandcamp.com/album/steve-and-his-week-of-wonders Hosted on Acast.
