This week on the podcast we have Hannah Fernando who is a nurse in New Zealand!!  And she is also a comedian.  She doesn't call herself a comedian, per se, but I have labeled her as that because she is absolutely hilarious and has built a social media following around showcasing the humorous lives that nurses lead.   In this episode, Hannah talks about nursing education in New Zealand.  She has a Bachelor's degree and currently works in an urgent care.  However, she started out in what New Zealanders call, "Gen Med" - which is basically our Med/Surg here in the United States.   I first found Hannah on Instagram and just fell in love with her wit and humor.  I love every single one of her skits. (You will hear a couple of them in this episode.  If you want to see them, go to the YouTube Channel or her IG page @thatnursehannah).   I cannot WAIT for you to hear this episode.  I hope you get a good laugh! This week on the podcast we have Sarah Lorenzini, MSN, RN and entrepreneur and podcast host behind Rapid Response RN. This woman does it all!  I am so inspired by her and look up to how productive and how much she accomplishes! Sarah graduated nursing school when she was 19 YEARS OLD!  Yes.  Read that again.  19 years old.  She took dual credit courses when she was in high school.  That's how she did it.  Amazing. And on top of that - she started in the ER.  At 19.  And then was a charge nurse in the ER by the age of 20.  I can't even imagine.   From there, she went on to get her MSN in education.  She moved to the cardic ICU unit and eventually became a rapid response nurse.   She has her own podcast called Rapid Response RN.  She believes in learning in a community and via stories.  So in her podcast she tells real life nursing stories in an effort to help other nurses learn critical concepts.   On top of that she has a course and membership for nurses who are looking for extra support.    I am so excited for you all to listen to this episode!  Unlock 175+ exciting job opportunities and innovative ways to leverage your nursing degree with our FREE email guide. This week on the podcast we have April Waddell BSN, RN and money guru of Nurse Money Date. April is originally from the Philippines and moved to the US when she was 5 years old.  She spent most of her life in the Chicago area.  She started her nursing career in pediatrics!  She has a little brother and always knew that she wanted to work with kids.  Upon nursing school graduation, she started in a pediatric ICU:  her dream job. However, burn out set in and was only made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic.  So April started brainstorming about other areas of life that interested her:  enter finance.  Like so many of us, she has debt from nursing school.  So she made a full effort to pay that debt off.   She and her husband also made the effort to save over 50% of their income!!  This set the stage for their move to Australia and for April to start her business coaching nurses in all things finance.  In 2021, she started Nurse Money Date.  The mission of her business is to educate and coach nurses around getting out of debt, saving, and investing.  She also focuses on the mindset around money.  So many of our beliefs and attitudes about money dictate our actions.  I am so excited for you all to listen to this episode!  Unlock 175+ exciting job opportunities and innovative ways to leverage your nursing degree with our FREE email guide. This week on the podcast we Juli Boit, NP, BSN, of Living Room International.  When I tell you I was humbled…I mean it! Juli went to nursing school at Azusa Pacific and graduated in 2001.  She started her nursing journey at Cedars Sinai on a floor taking care of HIV/AIDs patients.  While she was in nursing school, she went on nursing trips to Kenya and continued that as a nurse working for a nonprofit.     In 2004, she moved to western Kenya to work with Kenyan leaders she had met on short term trip and worked for Empowering Lives International (a non-profit). During her time there, she really wanted to start working more with hospice patients.  The nonprofit she worked for at the time did not have that specific mission.  Therefore, Living Room International was born.  At Living Room International, they address the growing needs of hospice and palliative care in Kenya. They started a small community hospital, have 150 Kenyan staff and serve over 100,000 people/patients annually.  In addition to that!  Julie has also written 2 books:  “From Beyond the Skies” (2021) and “Brave Love” (2023).  In these books she talks about the adoption process, caring for chronically ill children (with sickle cell anemia), bone marrow transplants, and the return to Kenya.  Juli and her family live in Kenya for about 10 months out of the year and they come back to the Los Angeles area for 2 months out of the year.  In this episode she talks about her nursing journey, compassion, compassion fatigue, nursing abroad…all the things.    Unlock 175+ exciting job opportunities and innovative ways to leverage your nursing degree with our FREE email guide. This week on the podcast we have one of the nurses behind STAT PD Marketplace:  Nicole Weathers, MSN, RN, and DNP in progress.  She is the other half of the team behind STAT PD. Like Jessi, Nicole lives in a rural area - NE Iowa, in a town of about 1000!  So not quite as rural as Jessi (town of 200, if you recall).  Small town nursing has my heart.   Nicole started out in med/surg and moved her way into education.  She even advocated for her small hospital to create the education position (not all hospitals have that resource)!  It just goes to show you - if there is a will, there is a way. At STAT PD, their "mission is to provide instant access to high quality healthcare education, tools, and templates - giving our everyday experts a platform to share their knowledge and expertise while earning extra income in the process." In today's episode, we talk to Nicole.  She tells us about her own personal nursing journey, what she is doing now, and about STAT PD.  We also talk about being an entrepreneur - if you feel like you don't know what you're doing, you are NOT the only one! This week on the podcast we have one of the nurses behind STAT PD Marketplace:  Jessi Grote, DNP, RN.  She is half of the team behind STAT PD. But Jessi is a jack of all trades.  She has done everything in nursing!  But one of my favorite things is that in her "spare time," she and her family ranch.  They have cows.  Which speaks to me since I am from small town Texas.  Jessi lives in a town of 200.  It warms my heart.  And I love her perspective of being a nurse in a rural area.  It is special. But it also goes to show you - if have an idea and it only requires the internet - you can do anything from anywhere.   At STAT PD, their "mission is to provide instant access to high quality healthcare education, tools, and templates - giving our everyday experts a platform to share their knowledge and expertise while earning extra income in the process." In today's episode, we talk to Jessi.  She tells us about her own personal nursing journey, what she is doing now, and about STAT PD. This is the Black Sheep Nurses' first interview with multiple nurses at the same time.  And it was amazing.  These 3 nurses are at the helm of The Nursing Beat.  What is The Nursing Beat you ask?  It is a daily newsletter, produced Monday through Friday that produces short form content for NURSES. What is The Nursing Beat's mission? It is their mission to "help nurses stay informed and save precious time so they're empowered to make the best decisions possible - for themselves, their careers, and the people in their care" The Nursing Beat was started by 2 ER nurses (enter Tamara and Hannah) and they eventually expanded and brought Kelly on board.   I am not kidding when I tell you I read this newsletter every.  single.  day.  I love it because each article gives great information for nurses and is in short form (who has time to read massive blog posts:  not you, not me). In today's episode, we talk to each Tamara, Hannah, and Kelly about their specific nursing journey, how they came together at The Nursing Beat, how it all started, and where they are now.   This episode will empower EVERY nurse - no matter where you are in your journey.   I cannot wait for you to listen!  Enjoy!   Unlock 175+ exciting job opportunities and innovative ways to leverage your nursing degree with our FREE email guide.
