dear ex-christians,
this is why we’re not okay:
- no more bible? no more rules!
- no more rules? freedom!
- wait, i can do anything?
- …what do i do now?
strangely enough, freedom takes some getting used to.
after leaving christianity I didn’t know who I was anymore, and I realized why: I never knew who I was to begin with!
in christianity, we are taught to hate the real us - jesus died for that nasty thing! as christians, we took sick pleasure in hating the authentic self, and being thankful for the plastic one instead!
today we talk about the beauty of looking at the roots of who we really are, and sitting with that being who is already perfect “as we are, not as we should be, because no one is as they should be.” - brennan manning

the night falls
my dreams repeat the message
of a life passed on
and soon after the morning rises
did I pass?
“life is not a test”
the sky told me that
but i was sure it was
then what is it?
to my surprise, the sky replied:“
what do you want it to be?”
i thought about the line from pretty woman
when richard gere asks julia roberts for her name
“vivian. my name is vivian.”
am I only here for the night
forgotten in the morning?
curls tucked under my wig
nameless, faceless
like an empty soul wandering
the primordial plane?
truthfully, i asked
“no”, the wind responded curtly
but I didn’t believe him
he asks me for my name
“what do you want it to be,” i laughed
no, he said what do you want it to be?

grief is more than death
have you ever lost someone?
an old friend?
a lover?
a beloved pet?
have you ever lost something?
a job?
a house?
a dream?
an aspect of you?
grief is more than death
grief is loss
grief is wandering
grief is aimless
and the road can be long
and winding
without an end in sight
but the end will come
and when it comes
we see the light
and we understand
that the end was a new beginning
an evolution
of us
today we talk about my 26 year old brother mitch's sudden passing, and how my parent's tried to raise him from the dead.
plot twist: if anybody believed that my brother would be raised from the dead, it would have been me.
my youngest brother mitch died suddenly a little over a month ago (april, 2023), i wanted to share with you the poem that i wrote for his eulogy (elegy) and some of my favorite pictures from his life.

ever after, evermore
only after, not before
gripping tightly, to my core
only after, never toward
words i wish i’d said:
i wish the timelines met
the secret keeper said,
“live a life with no regrets
you never could have known
the future isn’t shown
the past is in the past
the now is all we have”
ever after, every more
only after, not before
heavenward and heaven sent
i hope you know how much you meant
i’ll see you always, in my dreams
life’s not as daunting as it seems
observing hope through angels’ wings
eternal spring, my soul still sings
ever after, evermore
only after, not before
we realize the change we make
not a day early, not a day late
your spirit lives on
so does the answer
forevermore, my heart remembers

forever adored
