This is episode 15 with Western Mass, Fillipina-American artist, Donnabelle Casis! Donnabelle is a painter, radio show host for the ArtBeat Report on the Bill Newman Show, co-curator for the ArtSalon, arts community organizer and much more! Donnabelle received her MFA in Painting from the University of Washington in Seattle.  She has exhibited in museums and galleries across the US and abroad.  She has received numerous awards and grants including the Neddy Artist Fellowship for Painting. This is a conversation about finding your center to find your sense of place, about asking questions, about those moments where you question your identity as an artist and how that can be a fertile place of beginning. It's a conversation of about releasing yourself from pressure and finding joy through play and trusting the process. Episode 27 with Rhode Island-based multi-disciplinary artist, Kelsey Miller! We traverse arctic terrain, Rhode Island coasts and a printmaker's search for vastness in an expansive conversation. I sat down with Kelsey at the Kniznick Gallery on the campus of Brandeis University to talk about an exhibition that she created a large-scale wall drawing for. This group exhibition is called A Trick of Light of Distance and is curated by Olivia Baldwin. Episode 26 with Rhode Island based painter, Kirstin Lamb. We talk with Kirstin about her WOODS series in which we explore the layers of retranslation, interconnection and visual research to begin to know a place and capture the fleetingness of place. Kirstin studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating with an MFA in 2005, and she received her AB in Visual Art and Literatures in English from Brown University in 2001.  Kirstin’s work has been shown in venues across the country, recently showing with Gallery Naga in Boston, MA, Geary in Millerton, NY, Jennifer Terzian Gallery in Litchfield, CT, Cade Tompkins Projects in Providence, RI, the Spring Break Art Fair in NY, the Wassaic Project in Amenia, NY, the Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, MA and Providence College Galleries in Providence, RI, among others.  She has attended numerous residencies such as the Wassaic Project, and the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation. Episode 25 with NYC based painter, Nate Ethier. Ethier has exhibited in galleries such as David Richard Gallery in NYC, Auxier/Kline, Danese/Corey, LMAK Gallery, Minus Space, Geoffrey Found Gallery, Nancy Margolis Gallery, Morgan Lehman, and at institutes including the Susquehanna Art Museum, Boston University, and Georgia Southern University. Episode 24 explores the work & trajectory of NYC-based artist, Gwyneth Leech. For almost a full decade, Gwyneth has been fascinated with painting the building and construction of massive skyscrapers in NYC. Find out what prompted this new subject matter and where it led! We talk about Gwyneth's creative path, the places imprinted upon her, choral singing, and the possibility of architecture to address the challenges of the current climate crisis. Gwyneth's artwork has been featured in solo and group shows throughout the United States and Great Britain and is the subject of a multi-award winning documentary, The Monolith. Episode 23 with Western Mass-based artist, Gina Siepel! This is a live, on-site conversation at the foot of a 100 year old Red Oak tree exploring the beginnings and thinking around their current project called: To Understand a Tree. We talk about  Thoreau, myths of self reliance, creative transitions, and a deep connection and exploration to place. Gina Siepel is an interdisciplinary artist, designer, and woodworker  whose artistic practice reflects an engagement with place, history, queer experience, and ecology and their work integrates conceptual concerns and craftsmanship with a focus on wood as a natural and a cultural material.  Gina has shown their work in museums and galleries nationally. Episode 21 with Western Mass-based, Scottish Artist, Shona Macdonald! Shona Macdonald is an artist exploring themes of landscape, memory and place in her paintings and drawings. Macdonald has exhibited widely across the US, Canada, UK and Australia including exhibitions at the Roswell Art Museum, Zillman Art Museum, Proof Gallery and Reeves Contemporary to name just a few. Her work has been reviewed extensively and she has been a visiting artist at over 50 institutions. Macdonald is a Pollock-Krasner grant recipient, selected for numerous awards, and has work in numerous public and private institutions.  This is a conversation about the slowness of making art and having a depth of inquiry to sustain you as an artist. Its a conversation about the studio as a place and our shared love of Yi Fu Tuan while defining what place is. Episode 20 of Artist & Place with Boston-based artist, Michael Zachary! Michael Zachary is workin in drawing and picture making. His work utilized the slow building up of cross hatched lines using 4 colors - CMYK. Themes explored in his work are landscape, nature,  and perception. This is a great conversation celebrating a love of the slow & tactile quality of drawing through a digital and modular approach. It's a conversation about creating speed bumps in the work to slow the viewer down, and about how landscape, according to Thoreau, can be a psychic self portrait. It's a conversation about the need for a specificity of color and achieving that through his laborious and focused process. Sara creates speculative-documentary performances and other works that explore interconnection and the poetics and politics of embodied and archival research. Welcome to Episode 18 for the launch of Season 2! We are back! This conversation is with Boston-based artist & animator, Maya Erdelyi about her many life travels and many layers of inspiration growing up in Queens, New York. Her experience growing up with the graffiti of the 80s on the subway, Pee Wee's Playhouse, Saturday morning cartoons, the immersion of color and being drawn to power places. Maya is a Professor of Animation at the School Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston.  Her work has been been shown in national and international film festivals, galleries, museums and DIY venues. Episode 14 with Boston-based painter & muralist, Cyrille Conan. Cyrille Conan was born in 1973 and grew up in Queens, NY to French immigrants. He is first generation American and is bilingual. He has dual-citizenship and identifies both as French and American. This duality is apparent in his artwork. The graphic nature and grit of the work derives from growing up in NYC in the 70s & 80s and the love of nature and natural forms distilled in him from Celtic/Breton culture have transformed into a minimal, organic, geometrical abstraction. Cyrille graduated with a BFA in Painting from the Hartford Art School before planting his roots in Boston in 1998. While his primary practice is still painting, he works in a variety of mediums and scales. Episode 13 with Philadelphia artist, Arden Bendler Browning!  Arden is a painter creating large scale paintings and small works on paper, virtual reality environments and public art. Arden’s work has been exhibited and collected internationally. Her works are included in several public collections including the West Collection, the Microsoft Art Collection, Toyota and the Frost Tower Collection to name just a few. Her work is represented by Bridgette Mayer Gallery in Philadelphia, Galeri Urbane in Dallas and Tinney Contemporary in Nashville. She has done several public art commissions including works for the Philadelphia International Airport and a project with Mural Arts in Philadelphia. This is a great conversation about wanderlust, capturing the imperfect view, epic road trips and trying to continually find the sense of awe and history of a place. We talk about the experience of capturing landscape while moving through an environment, portals to limitless space, trying to capture the full experience of a place and paintings becoming records of a place, a memory and captured time. Episode 12 with Brooklyn Artist, Audrey Stone. Audrey is a painter that works with line, color and subtle color gradients. She observes the shifting color and light innate and describes it as an ecstatic experience. Audrey received her MFA from Hunter College and her BFA from Pratt Institute focusing on painting. She has exhibited widely across the United States as well as in Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, England, France and  Japan. Audrey has shown with Morgan Lehman Gallery, McKenzie Fine Art,  the Andy Warhol Museum, the Arkansas Art Center, the Columbus Museum, Geoffrey Young Gallery, Kentler International Drawing Space, Kenise Barnes Fine Art, ODETTA Gallery,  and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Her work is in many public collections including the Cleveland clinic, Credit Suisse, Fidelity Investments, New York Presbyterian Hospital and many more.  In this conversation we talk about line, about moving through various stages of work , about the constants of a place and the markers of what is left in a place. It's about imperfect perfection, soft edge painting, moments o excitement and calm. We talked about creating paintings about unimaginable places as a way to understand the unknowable and the stories that are lost. Episode 11 of Artist & Place with Sabato Visconti, an Italian-Brazilian new media artist based n Western Massachusetts. He was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and raised in Miami, He went on to earn a B.A. in Political Science from Amherst College. Sabato’s work seeks to reconfigure traditional understanding of photography and digital media, by interrogating how hegemonic structures distort and influence individual subjects. Sabato began experimenting with glitch processes in 2011. Since then, his work with glitch and digital media has been exhibited throughout the world, including spaces like Tate Britain, ICA Boston, The SPRING/BREAK Art Show, LACDA, and the FILE Festival. His work has also appeared in Vogue, TIME, WIRED, The New York Times, AI-AP’s “Latin American Fotografia 4” Anthology, and in Photographer’s Forum annual “Best of Photography” books for eight straight years. This is a conversation about post photography processes, new media art and the democratizing of access to making and sharing art. It’s a conversation about a digital community sharing ideas and tools to propel what is possible in photography even further. It is a conversation about mining the roots of digital creation to exploit nostalgic technologies to produce art. It’s a conversation about returning to the basics to answer fundamental questions about making art and the future and hybridity of mediums. It’s a conversation about our collective future with these new technologies and thinking through the role that they could play in the creative practice. Loved this conversation and I hope you do too!
