Today on the syllabus is the girl talk girlies four favorite subjects: movies, feminism, Harry styles, and the fact that some people do not have bootstraps. This feminist analysis of Don’t Worry Darling, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Hunger Games, and Bottoms will have you laughing, learning, and questioning the structure of society.
The One Direction Episode

The One Direction Episode

2024-03-1901:03:14

The year is 2010 and Liam Payne is scared of spoons. Harry Styles works in a bakery. Niall Horan loves singing Viva La Vida. Louis Tomlinson likes girls who eat carrots. Zayn Malik is preparing to carry the 2010’s on his shoulders. Over a decade later, Em and Nala are still just as obsessed with One Direction as ever. In this Girl Talk special episode, the girlies rehash all of their favorite 1D moments, songs, rumors, and much more.
From screaming so loud they could barely breathe to seeing performers so hot they could barely breathe, Em & Nala recap their particularly slay drag show adventure. They also think deeply about the flop attractions of the internet’s past. More specifically, Emily brings up Willy Wonka Glasgow, which reminds her of Dashcon, which reminds her of Tanacon, which reminds her of Fyre Fest.
The weather outside is frightful, but the girlies summer camp memories are even more frightful. In an attempt to get out of a seasonally-depressed funk, Em & Nala accidentally have a really deep discussion about weight loss camp, feeling like you don’t fit in, child labor, talent shows, yogurt cake, and more! (amongst a short Taylor Swift check-in because duh)
Time Machine: 2014!

Time Machine: 2014!

2024-02-0631:07

Take a trip back in time with the girlies to the year of galaxy leggings, shaking it off, volunteering for tribute, & asking if okay will be our always. While they were in middle school at the time, Em & Nala remember 2014 extremely fondly. Plus they discuss their theatre kid tendencies and the song that makes them want to rip their ears off and burn them!
Get in losers, the theatre kids are complaining again! From Renee Rapp’s incredible, show-stopping, never the same performance to the songs that make our ears bleed, the girlies talk all things Mean Girls 2024 in this episode. But first, they discuss two other iconic, yet oddly disturbing pieces of media set in the early 2000’s: Saltburn and Tommy Wiseau’s The Room.
As we enter the year of Wicked Part 1, the girlies discuss what they believe the next year will hold. From fashion trends to Ethan Slater looking eerily similar to Frankie Grande, this chaotic chat is full of giggles and ponderings. Nala rants about the multiverse, Emily hates on Wonka, and the two decide whether or not ‘slay’ will be 2024’s biggest casualty.
Spotify Wrapped Day: It’s bigger than the Super Bowl and more anticipated than a rare comet. Like any music-loving, Spotify-dependent girlies, we MUST share our exceptional music tastes with you all. If you’re beyond sick of all the Wrapped graphics on your IG feed, do not fret. Tune in to also hear about Nala’s concert experience in the wasteland/wonderland of New Jersey and the unsettling feeling that hasn’t left Emily since she watched 'May December.'

The girlies sit down to talk about the iconic and disturbing tv show that is Black Mirror. From monkeys that need a hug to evil Matt Damon lookalikes, this show is somehow the best and worst thing they have ever seen. In typical Girl Talk fashion, Em and Nala attempt to share their top three episodes but kinda sorta end up talking about all of them. Other discussions include Grammy predictions and how show-stopping Heidi Klum’s husband looked dressed up as an egg.
1989 (Taylor’s Version) changed lives. From vault track dissections to songs we think are better than the originals, the girlies have much to discuss. We also share our Eras Tour movie experience, admit our stupid financial decisions (that may or may not be cardigan shaped), and pledge our allegiance to Jack Antonoff (and really all celebrities that hail from the debatably great state of New Jersey).
From being a 20-year-old teenager to entering your depression Barbie era to the emergence of #adulting, the consensus is that existing as a young woman is hard. The Girl Talk girlies discuss this phenomenon and how outside factors, such as the pandemic, have affected their ability to “grow up.” And of course, a small Taylor Swift discussion takes place as well…it is our 13th episode after all.
Technically no one asked us to rehash drama about our favorite fictional characters…but we did it anyway. In this episode, Nala and Emily put on their boxing gloves and attempted to defend the fictional boyfriends that live on our screens (and in our heads). While focusing primarily on The Summer I Turned Pretty and Gilmore Girls love triangles, we somehow stumbled upon a plethora of other discussions such as a dissection of our favorite girlbosses: Emily Gilmore and Kirk Gleason.
Whether they’re bopping to the top or fantasizing about being rich enough to buy a home in Disney’s Golden Oak, this week’s episode proves Em & Nala are never beating the Disney adult allegations. Other discussions include our 1989 vault track predictions and Nala’s incredible One Direction concert storytime that Emily will remain jealous of for the rest of time.
School's back in session which can only mean one thing: Emily feels immense pressure to get her life (& her creative projects) back on track. After a slayful summer break, Girl Talk is back with a brand new co-host and a chaotic set of get-to-know-you questions. From book tropes to beets, this episode is a laugh-filled re-introduction to this silly little podcast. As usual, Em & Nala are begging anyone and everyone who reads this to follow our hilarious and spectacular Instagram: @girltalk.pod
As a Gemini, all Emily knows about astrology is that everybody hates her. In this episode, Emily attempts to teach herself astrology basics, from why astrology has captured the hearts of so many to whatever the hell a big three is. Other discussions include furry Jared Leto at the Met Gala and as usual, multiple mentions of the Hunger Games.
In this episode (of questionable audio quality), Emily is joined by three of her besties to discuss an odd assortment of topics. From singing karaoke to save your life to the Duolingo bird’s recent appearance on Cornelia Street, this episode is a bit more chaotic than most. On a very slightly more serious note, the group also discusses plot predictions for the upcoming Barbie movie and the atrocity that we have dubbed the UConn housing hunger games.
Emily’s relationship with reading is…complicated. Follow along as she recaps her messy reading journey and explains how reading has ultimately shaped her life. She then reviews and discusses her feelings on the upcoming adaptation of her most recent read, Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Other topics include the horrificness of Outer Banks Season 3 and the trials and tribulations of being a Hunger Games kid.
Listen to Em spiral as she realizes consumerism is everywhere and everything relates back to capitalism. Other discussions include a retrospective look at the Grammy awards, why the puppy bowl is the only sporting event that matters, and how despite the cruelties of consumerism, buying a silly little treat on Valentine’s Day might just be the ultimate compromise.
In this episode, Emily brings on fellow pop-culture obsessor, Megan Carlmark, to discuss their obsession with award shows, the 2023 Oscar snubs, and the recent Ticketmaster senate hearing. Megan shares her experience of being personally victimized by the Ticketmaster queue. Somehow they also end up discussing Colleen Hoover, whether or not Love on Tour is an immortal being, Megan’s obsession with Breaking Bad, and plenty more!
In this chaotic and slightly inaccurate solo episode, Emily explores the idea of social issues being portrayed in film and tv. More specifically, she rants about the emergence of rich people satire and why they’re simultaneously amazing and terrible. Should we eat the rich, let them destroy themselves, or just look away?
