Today's guest is journalist, author and broadcaster Jim White choosing the matches he'd take with him to a desert island. From memorable Manchester United matches he's covered over the years to England's near miss at Euro 2020, Jim's infectious passion for all things football is evident throughout.   In between picks, we deep dive into his brilliant book A History of the Premier League in Ten Matches as he pinpoints the pivotal games that made the English top flight the UK's most lucrative export.   There's also some incredible advice for grassroots coaches of junior football, as Jim shares the piece of wisdom he carried with him from one of football's biggest names during his own decade or so on the touchline coaching his son's junior team.   Enjoyed the show? Host Carl Jones is joined by former Nottingham Forest striker Jason Lee to discuss his career in football and his spell in the Premier League.   From working his way up the league ladder to playing in Europe for Nottingham Forest by his early-20s, things took a turn for the sinister when Baddiel and Skinner's infamous Fantasy Football sketch made him one of the most recognisable faces in the Premier League for a short period in the 90s.   From there, we cover the indirect impact of that sketch on his career, his most memorable moments including winning promotion and moving north of the border, and discuss his current role working in EDI and why it's so important for the modern game to keep up with the times. In the first episode of season three, host Carl Jones is joined by Sky Sports presenter and Everton fan Jules Warren to find out which matches he'd take with him to a desert island. From remembering the glory days of his childhood as the Toffees dominated English football to the present day where things aren't quite so rosy, Jules recalls some of his favourite memories at Goodison Park, the Everton legend he'd choose to rescue him from his desert island and the playoff final he'd relive, accompanied by one of English football's biggest personalities.  There's also lots of chat about how Jules became a broadcaster, what happens when things go wrong and live TV and how it feels to be on air watching your team get spanked in a Merseyside derby while surrounded by Liverpool fans.  Enjoyed the show? In this second part of the interview (and the final episode of this series!), host Carl Jones is joined once again by the voice of ITV football for almost two decades - a job in which he called some of the biggest moments in domestic, European and international football - the incomparable Clive Tyldesley. Picking up where we left off last week, we chat about international tournaments and which host nation proved to be his most memorable trip away. We discuss how football and society are intertwined, for better and for worse, and we cover what it's like to be in the commentary box describing a dismal England exit from a major tournament - especially when it means you've got to call the position of your great friend, the England manager Roy Hodgson, untenable. Clive shares the only time he ever asked a manager if he'd still be in a job by the following weekend, and why he never asked that question again. And he gives insight into what being the voice of the FIFA video games series was like and how it led to the most unlikely moments of being recognised by his distinctive voice. All of that and much more in a superb end to season two of When Football Began Again.  CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE You can buy Clive's beautiful commentary charts here: https://www.commentarycharts.com/ Enjoyed the show? Host Carl Jones is joined by the voice of ITV football for almost two decades - a job in which he called some of the biggest moments in domestic, European and international football - the incomparable Clive Tyldesley. From his beginnings as a journalist and later regional commentator for Granada Television in the 1980s to becoming the late, great Brian Moore's successor just in time for one of the most unforgettable final few minutes of the 1999 Champions League final and beyond, this first part is a whistle stop journey through Clive's early life and career. There's tales of reporting on matches involving some of the greatest names in the history of the game, including Clough, Fergie and Bill Shankly. He gives his views on what makes good commentary and what doesn't, talks about his favourite broadcasters and reveals what it was like to be a commentator at the BBC during the height of Motty vs Davies in the commentary box. I also ask Clive what goes through his head in the moments football history is happening before his very eyes, which includes a deep dive into those incredible moments back in 1999 and his commentary that will forever be indelibly linked to that unforgettable comeback. We also reveal who you voted as the Premier League era's greatest ever Bulgarian player. It was a closer run thing than you'd imagine... Make sure you hit subscribe to get part two next week where we cover his time at international tournaments, commentating on England's defeat to Iceland and being the voice of the FIFA franchise. Host Carl Jones is joined by two comedians for a deep dive into the 1997/98 Premier League season. Everton fan Jamie Sutherland and Arsenal fan Andy Kind help retell the stories of hugely contrasting seasons for their respective teams and plenty more besides as Cantona left, Michael Owen emerged Temuri Ketsbaia kicked the sh*t out of some hoardings.  Fergie replaces his prodigal frontman with Teddy Sheringham with limited success, Arsene Wengers gets his feet under the table in a spectacular first full season in charge by replacing the pre-match menus and the midfield at Highbury and Christian Gross brings his Tube ticket to a press conference. All of that and much more.  We also decide who scored the Goal of the Season, select the greatest ever Premier League import from Bulgaria and end with a 97/98 themed round of #PlayYourAppsRight. Host Carl Jones is joined by comedians and Oldham Athletic fans Stevie Gray and Che Burnley to continue the count up the all-time Premier League table as we reach 44th place. We take a nostalgic trip back to the 90s where schoolboys Che and Stevie were enjoying watching their local team go toe-to-toe with local rivals Manchester United and claiming bragging rights over Manchester City. There were trips to Wembley to enjoy, the goalscoring exploits of a mulleted Ian Marshall to marvel at and a reputation for being everyone's second team, such was their underdog charm.  We cover Oldham's potted history, take a look at where things have gone since, and deep dive into the two Premier League seasons that they're still remembered for three decades on.  Alongside all of that, Che reimagines how the future could have been for Oldham had their promising side of the 1910s not been decimated by World War I and Stevie tells us about his time as a Junior Latic and a VERY memorable encounter with the Aston Villa changing room. We'll also put a Premier League Oldham Athletic XI into the archives, choosing between the slim pickings for the Premier League's greatest Bolivian of all-time and ending on an Oldham-heavy round of Play Your Apps Right Enjoyed the show? Host Carl Jones is joined by former Notts County, Leicester City, Aston Villa, Southampton, Rayo Vallecano and England midfielder Mark Draper to deep dive into a career that featured Wembley wins, England call-ups and playing against some of the most iconic stars of his generation. We cover breaking through at Notts County, joining Brian Little in the Premier League and following him to Villa Park where he played his part in an unforgettable debut. There's also England regrets, falling out of favour with John Gregory and the moves to the South Coast and Spain before launching his own coaching academies in retirement. He also reveals what a Chairman said to him after feeling he might have paid over the odds for the promising young midfielder at a tribunal and what Matt Le Tissier said to him after a ten minute cameo for England. All that and much more, plus we reveal who you voted as the Premier League era's greatest ever Brazilian player. Spoiler: it's not Kleberson.  Enjoyed the show? Host Carl Jones is joined by comedian and Cardiff City superfan Dai Rhys Towler to continue the count up the all-time Premier League table as we reach 45th place. Dai regales us with some incredible trivia on the history of Cardiff City, including how they helped coin the phrase 'back to square one' - an irony not lost on this particular dry-humoured Bluebird - before recalling the dominant City side that won the Championship in 2013 in unfamiliar colours. We also cover the reigns of Neil Warnock (big fan), Malky Mackay (big fan until huge caveat) and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (categorically not a fan) as we relive both seasons in the Premier League, find out where things went wrong for them for both to end in relegation and what Cardiff must do if they ever want to return. We'll also put a Premier League Cardiff City XI into the archives, with two players in particular proving to be poignant picks, as well as choosing the Premier League's greatest Brazilian Goalkeeper/Defender of all-time with fellow comedian and friend of the show Fran Jenking who joins us for the final ten minutes.  Enjoyed the show? Please subscribe, leave us a 5* review and pass the pod to anyone who you think will enjoy it. Host Carl Jones is joined by Tom Flight, author of 'Yer Joking Aren't Ya? The Story of Middlesbrough FC's 1996/97 Season' and huge Boro fan to find out which matches he'd take with him to a desert island. With the caveat that he can only take games from 1996/97, it's a bittersweet trip back down memory lane for even the most balanced Boro fan as the Teessiders record one of the most remarkable seasons in English top flight history. We break down the summer transfer flurry of superstars, the thrilling start to the season, the infamous postponed game with Blackburn in December that would reverberate through the remainder of their season and the multiple trips to Wembley in two domestic cup campaigns that would ultimately end in tears. In between chatting Boro, we find out which cult defender Tom would choose to attempt to rescue him from the island, which matches not involving Middlesbrough remain lodged in his memory and who the best Brazilian attacker in the Premier League era is in his opinion - see if you can guess...   Enjoyed the show? Host Carl Jones is joined by comedian, author, podcaster and Chelsea fan Damien St John and author, returning guest and Middlesbrough fan Rob Fletcher to unpick the memorable moments, goals, transfers and matches of 1996/97. There's a new challenger in town with the arrival of Arsene Wenger, an influx of talent from Serie A at Stamford Bridge, big-spending Middlesbrough will see their ambitions quelled by a bit of a bug going round before Christmas and Sunderland will invite a documentary crew in to capture their expletive-filled return to Division One. Host Carl Jones is joined by Bradford City legend Wayne Jacobs and passionate Bantams fan, comedian and actor Kevin McDonnell, to continue the count up the all-time Premier League table as we reach 46th place. With insight from the stands and the pitch, Wayne gives insight into the step up to Premier League level from Division Two, recalls the match that left him both physically and mentally drained in the opening weeks and gives the inside track on the spirit that lifted Bradford into the top flight, and the disintegration of some of those factors that saw them fall back down the league ladder. Aside from just enjoying the company of his hero, Kevin reveals that he's actually met Wayne before, as well as reliving those glorious seasons that saw City rise to the top table, collecting an array of Premier League stars along the way. Was it all worth the ride in the end?  We'll also put a Premier League Bradford City XI into the archives, and we reveal who is the Premier League's greatest Belgian player of all-time is following your votes last week.  Enjoyed the show? Host Carl Jones is joined by comedian, actor, writer and huge Newcastle United fan Raul Kohli, to share the matches he'd take with him to a desert island. Recorded in May 2023 as the Toon were about to book their long-awaited return to the Champions League, Raul speaks passionately about what that will mean to his home city, the young fans within it and also himself personally. We also chat about his feelings for Sunderland (spoiler: not wholly positive), the Newcastle managers he'll never forget and why he believes Eddie Howe is on course to surpass them all. We also find out why the Carabao Cup final was the greatest weekend of his life to date, despite defeat to Manchester United, and I ask Raul to help me select the greatest Belgian to ever play in the Premier League. Host Carl Jones is joined by former Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, Bolton and Watford defender Neil Cox to deep dive into a career with more than 600 professional appearances. From being integrated into the first team squad aged just 13 at his hometown club Scunthorpe United to a unique transfer fee to Villa Park and the top flight in 1991, Neil's career path is a fascinating one. Part of the Riverside Revolution, as Middlesbrough signed off at Ayresome Park by winning the First Division title, he was a key member of the Boro side that reached both cup finals and suffered relegation thanks to a points deduction in 1996/97. We discuss that and how his bust-up with Fabrizio Ravanelli led to him meeting Pele. We also chat about what it's like to play in a final day relegation decider, his vastly different relationships with Graham Taylor and Gianluca Vialli at Watford, and his own move into the dugout as Assistant at AFC Wimbledon - what were those first meetings with MK Dons like? Host Carl Jones is joined by Chief Football Writer for The Times, author and broadcaster, Henry Winter, to share the matches he'd take with him to a desert island. Recorded shortly after Henry's return from reporting on Manchester City's Champions League final victory, we reflect on his time in Istanbul, recollect his experience writing the match report for another famous Champions League final involving a Manchester side and find out which current England international he'd choose to attempt a rescue mission from the desert island. We also chat about his time covering international football, his favourite World Cup and the 2016 biography of the England national side he wrote, Fifty Years of Hurt, and its manifesto for change within the English game. Journalist Joe Rawson, live from Qatar, (taken from Episode 7) and former LMA Manager of the Year Danny Wilson (taken from Episode 8) remember Paulo Di Canio's infamous push from opposite perspectives in the stands and from the dugout. Host Carl Jones is joined by founder of the JE3 Foundation Charlie Edinburgh to discuss the work of his incredible charity, the legacy of his dad Justin and the matches he'd take with him to a deserted island.  It's an emotional chat in places and an inspirational one in others as Charlie shares how he and his family have coped with the sudden and tragic passing of former Spurs and Leyton Orient legend Justin Edinburgh following a cardiac arrest in 2019. He was just 49. Charlie explains why the Foundation is campaigning to get Justin's Law recognised, the importance of having access to defibrillators in public places where sport takes place and the simple steps everyone can take to improve the chances of surviving an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest beyond the current 1 in 10 - a statistic that is proven to increased with greater awareness, education and access to defibs. For his match choices, the memory of his dad is a thread throughout with a shared love of Spurs and an intense pride of his achievements as a manager with Newport and Leyton Orient featuring. There's also bad news for Arsenal's Invincibles with a tongue-in-cheek Room 101 choice... Enjoyed the show?
