This week on Rookie Pirate Radio, Jon Negroni and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “The Wings of Icarus.” One Piece 1114 is currently available to read for free on Viz. We want your feedback! You can email us (rookipirateradio@gmail.com) or join our Discord to share your own theories, speculation, and suggestions. Discussion Points for One Piece 1114 (Spoilers!): Vegapunk's message about the world sinking is apparently reaching the ENTIRE world! The Mother Flame has some metaphorical connections to nuclear power and the history of Japan... There's still some mystery behind how Vegapunk "discovered" the Mother Flame, what it's true nature is, and why the Gorsosei didn't suspect him deciphering the Poneglyphs sooner. The Iron Giant is apparently super resistant to fire and explosions. JoyBoy being the first pirate is a longtime theory that has always made a ton of sense, and we definitely expect him to be the "special character" Oda has been teasing to have an eyepatch. The mystery of Logia fruits and their elemental nature, as well as the hints behind flames powered by "passion." Impel Down could be a seriously pivotal location moving forward, especially if Doflamingo escapes and joins either the Cross Guild or even the Revolutionary Army. Akainu is going to continue to be evil, sorry not sorry. The broadcast snail being hidden inside the Iron Giant makes a ton of sense! Elbaf isn't going to just be another standalone island adventure arc, it's gotta tie into a bigger war arc somehow. This week, Jon Negroni and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “Stalemate.” Though based on that stellar color spread, maybe it should be called Checkmate...One Piece 1113 is currently available to read for free on Viz. We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, please leave us a comment below. You can also email us (rookipirateradio@gmail.com) or join our Discord! Discussion Points for One Piece 1113 (Spoilers!): We were right about Vegapunk's brain! Good job, us. Vegapunk is a centrist fence-sitter and that's that. Saturn and Robin and tension. One Piece is an adaptation of Titanic?! The prophecy of Luffy destroying Fishman Island continues to look bright. A worldwide flood, ancient weapons, and artificial clouds... Fishman Island's exclusion from the broadcast might be intentional. The world will probably assume Luffy killed Vegapunk which would be major. Luffy's dream of becoming the Pirate King could represent his desire to be the last pirate and create a world that doesn't need pirates anymore. Luffy's ideology as a pirate is unique and deeply ingrained in his character. Each member of the Straw Hat Pirates has a unique dream that contributes to his dream. We need to know how injured Robin really is. Understanding different perspectives can help avoid misunderstandings and conflicts with Sanji's behavior toward women evolving over the course of the story. The theory of the ancient kingdom being Impel Down is interesting. Climate change and increasing marine presence can be forms of enforcement The concept of a floating island or a kingdom of pirates that can move around is fascinating and adds depth to the One Piece world. Everyone's theories about the world of One Piece are about to be put to the test. Moving islands? Floating islands? The ancient kingdom and the Void Century are of course connected to the mystery behind the Poneglyphs, but also the weird navigation an other climate events that might be key to finding Laugh Tale. Momo may already have a general idea of the world sinking and that is why he wanted to wait to open the borders of Wano. The theory of a big party where all the islands are connected is...nice. The rising ocean tides could have led to the creation of islands and underwater places. And the sky islands and the ancient kingdom could have been methods of escaping the growing ocean waters. The weapons, such as Pluton and Uranus, may have had the power to drain the world or separate the islands. The possibility of Kuzan joining Blackbeard's crew as a mole is discussed We question the logic behind Kuzan leaving the Marines if he is a valuable asset Leaving a rating on Apple Podcasts helps support the podcast and provides valuable feedback. This week, Jon Negroni (me) and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “Hard Aspects.” And don't worry, not an aspect of this conversation is hard to understand. One Piece 1112 is currently available to read for free on Viz. We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, please email us (rookipirateradio@gmail.com) or join our Discord!  Discussion Points for One Piece 1112 (Spoilers!): We speculate about the potential reveal of Vegapunk's brain and its role in the broadcast. The Straw Hats' survival and escape are now a real question mark with the Gorosei closing in on them. Franky is just so great?! Here's why Franky is just so great. Quick bounty talk about Franky, too. Bonnie joining the crew just becomes more and more feasible thanks to this chapter! No, seriously! OK but what is Vegapunk's message really going to be? We have some theories. The Gorosei's powers may be based on mythical beings rather than Devil Fruit abilities... Did Vegapunk clone himself while Travis wasn't watching? The satellites might die when Vegapunk finally "dies." Right? Bonnie could control S-Bear and the husk of Kuma. Right? We have some fun speculating Yamato's new "scabbards" possibly including the Tobi Roppo. Some theories on Edison's plan to save the Sunny. On a Jon-less Rookie Pirate Radio, Travis Hymas (Me) and Ally Johnson take a look at the Spring 2024 anime season. Here’s what we talk about in detail:  New series: Wind Breaker, A Condition Called Love, Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf, Oblivion Battery, Sand Land, Whisper Me A Love Song, Go Go Loser Ranger!, Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again, Jellyfish Can’t Swim In The Night, Kaiju No. 8., Train to the End of the World Returning: My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, Sound Euphonium, Laid Back Camp, and the upcoming films for Blue Lock and Haikyu!!  There’s also a little bit of Jon slander, as a treat.  We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, please leave us a comment below. One Piece 1111 is here, and we’re ready to talk about it on Rookie Pirate Radio, a podcast dedicated to the world of anime and manga. This week, Jon Negroni and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “Sun-Shield.” And you'll have to shield our eyes from the sun after reading such an unbelievably wild chapter. One Piece 1111 is currently available to read for free on Viz. We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, please leave us a comment on our website. You can also email us (rookipirateradio@gmail.com) or join our Discord!  Discussion Points for One Piece 1111 (Spoilers!): We reflect on how Egghead differs from Wano and previous arcs, particularly what makes it so satisfying as a culmination moment. It's incredible to see Luffy's progression as a character as he teams up with Giants to take on the Gorosei. How did we get here? One Piece has always struck a unique balance between silliness and seriousness. The Iron Giant and its connection to Zunesha and the Drumbeat of Liberation are still unsolved mysteries we're holding out on. Can we stop expecting Kizaru to break good? Please? We speculate on how the Gorosei might fit into the Ancient Kingdom/Weapons lore. Could we actually get a Joy Boy flashback soon? What happens next to Kaku, Lucci, and the Seraphim? We cover the (apparently popular) theory that Imu is the sea devil making devil fruit users weak to water, thus making the Fishman Island prophecy difficult to fulfill. OK, but what if Bonney and Kuma joined the crew? What then, besides theory jail? Extra Credits Our intro music is a remix version of “Overtaken” from the One Piece anime, cut together by Jon Negroni. One Piece 1110 is here, and we’re ready to talk about it on Rookie Pirate Radio, a podcast dedicated to the world of anime and manga. This week, Jon Negroni and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “Starfall.” And trust us, we're wishing upon several stars when it comes to. a certain "giant" character finally waking up! One Piece 1110 is currently available to read for free on Viz. We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, please email us (rookipirateradio@gmail.com) or join our Discord!  Discussion Points for One Piece 1110 (Spoilers!): The new cover story continues! Our prediction that it will at least in part cover Yamato exploring the island has finally come to pass. The Five Elders have arrived and their double page spread (first since chapter 800) is glorious. The giants Dorry and Brogy reunite with Luffy! We debate the origins and powers of the Five Elders, as well as their possible connection to devil fruits being different from what we've seen thus far. We speculate a lot on what could disrupt this battle, including a surprise appearance from Imu and possibly a revelation that the origin of Vegapunk's broadcast is outside of Egghead, maybe even with Dragon. Will anyone attack the Holy Land with the elders gone? Yes, Zoro had a good reason for dragging out his fight with Lucci. OK, but what's the deal with awakened devil fruits and why do we keep having this conversation? Is there anything to the design inspiration behind the Gorosei's "yokai" forms? Fun extra theory about the "drumbeat of liberation" being key to waking up more "iron soldiers" and that being why the Gorosei are so adamant about erasing history. Also the importance of stories and passing them down in One Piece will always be, uh, important! Remembering Akira Toriyama

Remembering Akira Toriyama

2024-03-1101:03:12

On a more somber episode of Rookie Pirate Radio than usual, Jon and Travis discuss the legacy and cultural impact of the late Akira Toriyama, best known for creating the long-running Dragon Ball manga and anime. We celebrate the history of Toriyama's prolific career, from his early success with Dr. Slump to the worldwide domination of Dragon Ball Z through the 1980s and 90s. Plus we get into much of the other great work Toriyama produced over the years, ranging from movies to video game designs. We end the show talking about what we've been watching, including Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete and Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix. We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or anything else fun to add, please email us (rookipirateradio@gmail.com) or join our Discord!  Discussion points: How Akira Toriyama's work, particularly Dragon Ball Z, influenced anime and manga for generations Our specific connections to Dragon Ball Z as kids. And why it was so successful for people of various backgrounds and ethnicities Toriyama's early influences and what inspired him to make Dragon Ball Why characters like Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo endure and resonate (and how Gohan is totally misunderstood!) Toriyama's storytelling and artistic design and why it's so iconic The uncomfortable, but necessary discussion around the toll on manga artists' health Extra Credits: Our intro music this week is ”Makafushigi Adventure," the original opening of Dragon Ball composed by Hiroki Takahashi. One Piece 1109 is here, and we’re ready to talk about it on Rookie Pirate Radio, a podcast dedicated to the world of anime and manga. This week, Jon Negroni (me) and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “Interception.” But you don't have to wait 10 whole minutes to start listening because the episode is out right now! One Piece 1109 is currently available to read for free on Viz. We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, you can email us (rookipirateradio@gmail.com) and/or join our Discord!  Discussion Points (Spoilers!): The new cover story! Looks like it'll focus on Wano/Onigashima and tie up loose ends from the previous arc. Vegapunk's message about the "truth of the world" is delayed (10 minutes or 10 CHAPTERS?!) Luffy's attacks are ineffective against Saturn, indicating a potential power resistance or familiarity with Nika. Kizaru's seems down for the count and his fate is uncertain, so Jon theorizes he may join the Cross Guild. Vegapunk's upcoming speech indicates that this may be his last hurrah in the story. The cover story suggests a connection between giants and Wano, adding to the world-building of the arc. The skull/sword of Onigashima raises questions about the history and origins of the island and Kaidou's Oni race. The artwork and dynamic action scenes in the chapter are a real high point since Oda's eye surgery. We speculate on the communication abilities of the five elders and Jon theorizes Luffy's potential battle with them could lead to his possible capture and being summoned to Marijoa by Imu. Extra Credits Our intro music is a remix version of “Overtaken” from the One Piece anime, cut together by Jon Negroni. Our podcast artwork is by Jon Negroni. One Piece 1108 is here, and we’re ready to talk about it on Rookie Pirate Radio, a podcast dedicated to the world of anime and manga. This week, Jon Negroni (me) and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “Come In, World." So you should come on in and listen along as we reveal the truth of this podcast. One Piece 1108 is currently available to read for free on Viz. We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, you can email us (rookipirateradio@gmail.com) and/or join our Discord!  Discussion Points: The color spread featuring Reiju and Tashigi is a little early for Pride Month. Caribou successfully persuades Van Augur and Catarina Devon to take him to Blackbeard, potentially revealing crucial information about Shirahoshi/Poseidon and Pluton. The battle between the navy and Bonney-controlled pacifistas escalates, leading to the vice admirals' decision to eliminate Bonney. Giant Luffy confronts Kizaru while Vegapunk's message beams out of the island, teasing the revelation of the truth of the world. This upcoming, highly-anticipated revelation in One Piece is could have a seriously significant impact on the story. The Giants, Elbaf, and/or Buccaneers may play a crucial role in what Vegapunk reveals next. Are we about to get another flashback and/or return to Wano and Fishman Island? Bonney joining the Straw Hats feels inevitable at this point, supported by Vegapunk's dying wish and the huge threat she faces. Extra Credits Our intro music is a remix version of “Overtaken” from the One Piece anime, cut together by Jon Negroni. Our podcast artwork is by Jon Negroni. Caribou betrays...well the readers, really. Bonney gets a martial arts lesson. Do we have to talk about Zoro and Sanji power-scaling? Because we will. This week on Rookie Pirate Radio, special guest Kayla Chu joins Jon Negroni (me) and Travis Hymas to discuss Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.
