The Magic Organ Best of 2025 avalanche of musical goodness continues. How do my picks differ from those of the NY Times, PItchfork, and the New Yorker? Way less white boy and girl indie, more non white musicians from all over the world and from here. Just sayin'.Because I'm mostly opposed to pop music and the concepts of pop music and pop culture that currently rule the empire, the Magic Organ's best of year music picks require listeners to do what they are, to listen and pay attention. So if you can't muster the energy necessary to do that and to escape from the Pop Death Star, I don't know what to say, that's on you somewhat, mostly, you might be the victim of a predatory cultural system but some people do make it out and I hope you make it out, it's way more fun being a freak than being in the suck ass line. Thanks for listening.Excerpts from this episode:Ben LaMar Gay: John, John HenryAle Hop & Titi Bakorta: Bonne AnneeThee Oh Sees: SneakerScientist & Dubiterian: Use Your HeadAfricanoise: O Chamado: Feel free, (it's free!) to follow me on the Insta (owned by one of the garbag-iest Americans going) where I conversate as themagic_organ. Oh my, the party continues! When you listen to all the musics and you don't just reside in the indie rock ghetto or the tiny ass village of jazz then there's a lot of insanely great shit to listen to out there. And that right there is the mission of The Magic Organ. There are no favorites nor weak links in the best of year episodes, it's straight up bangers from beginning to end, thanks for listening and have a great holiday season whichever way you roll.Excerpts from this episode:Abul Mogard: In a studded processionAgender: Action ReactionOpen Mike Eagle: michigan j. wonderPillars of Cacophany: The CradleAmmar 808: Ah YalilaFeel free, (it's free!) to follow me on the Insta (owned by one of the garbag-iest Americans going) where I conversate as themagic_organ. You know what time it is! It's the best of year series, we gotta a spreadsheet of all the genres that we're distilling down to the Magic Organ favorites of 2025. Plus I just caught a couple records on The Quietus' best metal of 2025, the new Sex Germs record and these other gents from the UK, Human Leather.Never fear, The Magic Organ is way more than heavy metal and punk rock, we love all the musics, they're all God's children. Here we go! The best time of the year to be a music lover and I don't mean a music lover that just sits there and eats whatever is served up by Big Music.Take your time, savor it, cuz there will probably be at least 6 best of episodes this year, there is so much great shit to listen to, it's just a podcast and a click of the mouse away.Excerpts from this episode:Noura Mint Seymali: GuerehHieroglyphic Being: The Secret Teachings of the AgesFrente Cumbiero: Paratebueno (feat. This is the last new music episode before the end of year roundup, don't be sad. New releases are slowing to a trickle, best of year lists start coming out around Thanksgiving or just afterwards. This year my best of 2025 record list has 38 releases on it, which is historically high. As you may not know from my podcast commentary I'm a finicky mofo, my definition of a best record of the year involves the record being good, having some meaning and nutritional value to it, and music that bears repeated listening. Most of the records on the major music outlets' best of year lists do not meet these requirements, especially the repeated listening part. The music industry is notoriously lazy and corrupt, so that's one of my main arguments in favor of The Magic Organ ruling the roost in terms of picking music, my shit is honest and professional.Hopefully this nerded out description has you super hotted up for the best of year roundup and there are three records on my best of 2025 list in this episode, so some last minute entries into the derby. I have to listen more to the new Shad record to see if it qualifies. Thanks for listening.Excerpts from this episode:Shad: SlantedAlgernon Cadwallader: Shameless FacesCabaca: AfricanoiseArmand Hammer & The Alchemist: ScandinaviaBlawan: WTFOld Saw: The Wringing ClothFeel free to follow me on the Insta (owned by one of the garbag-iest Americans going) where I conversate as themagic_organ. I freeball my podcast commentary and use these intro blurbs to correct things I wish I hadn't said. Towards the end of the second excerpt by feeo I say something like 'it's the best of what I heard' when I was trying to say that the opening track of that record was the best tune I heard on that record, not the best tune of this episode. On to the show where the same thing always happens: 6-7 bangers, 13 minutes, appreciating what musicians do, how they do it, listening together and learning about how musicians do what they do that makes you feel the way you do when the great music happens. And we apply that across the world because great music transcends race, class, circumstances, it can happen in a lot of different places and situations, it's a state of mind and thank God it happens. Thanks for listening.Excerpts from this episode:Upchuck: New Casefeeo: Days Pt. 1Hannah Frances: Steady In the HandKlein: it is what it is in d minorBongo District: Bongo BongPiotr Kurek: More Than OneFeel free to follow me on the Insta (owned by one of the garbag-iest Americans going) where I conversate as themagic_organ. Episode 113: Diggin'

Episode 113: Diggin'

2025-10-14--:--

I was short tunes for this episode so I went a diggin' in the interwebz and found mucho bangers! The more active you are as a listener (and as a person) the more great music you will have in your life. Of course, listening to The Magic Organ is a music hack to get there faster, but you should always listen for yourself. As usual we do the multi genre thing kicking off with some funky electronic, into some American/Ethiopian folk-jazz; hard to put a label on it, some wild ass metal, hip hop etc. on and on, it's a golden age as a music listener and so sad that so many folks just sit in the genres that they feel their indentity should be listening to. Man, what a world it would be if the suburban housewives were full on into the death metal, if only the mopey indie rockers would peep the African scene, then we would be getting somewhere. Minds would open, booties would move. And don't listen to Taylor Swift's new record, it's not very good, don't join cults, that shit is a cult.Excerpts from this episode:Xexa: KissonMeklit: AbebayehoshAgriculture: My GardenChester Watson: love spellT.NO: CadenceRochelle Jordan: Bite the BaitAita Mon Amour: AmmelaFeel free to follow me on the Insta (owned by one of the garbag-iest Americans going) where I conversate as themagic_organ. The Magic Organ doesn't ask for a lot of your time, the Magic Organ respects your time limits and we only ask for about 13 minutes of your attention every 10 days to 2 weeks. It's not a lot. Look at that bowling ball head Joe Rogan mofo, three hours a day, JFC! We usually throw up 6 excerpts from new releases, with commentary and celebration. We only put up a little over 2 minutes of a track, we never use a whole track, we're only offering snippets as part of fair use definitions to avoid copyright violations and to respect musicians. To discuss music and to celebrate less visible music without giving it away without permission. For extra flavor this episode offers a 7 pack, 7 excerpts in 13 minutes, yea we blast through it, starting with some banging reissue cumbia out of 1970s Peru all the way to a freshly released rock track from North and East Africa. Some abstract hip hop and electronic music also featured within this delicious sandwich.Hey, give me advice, tell me this is so good and everything in between, thanks for listening!Excerpts from this episode:Los Zheros De Iquitos: La Rosadolo2000: lazarus (feat. kuru)Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith: GushScientist and Dubiterian (feat. Hello America and fuq you to a giant chunk of you for your blind adherence to the status quo, we are an acquired taste here at The Magic Organ. This week's episode kicks off with an ambient banger from Abul Mogard, goes funky after that, goes punky after that, goes rootsy after that, goes heavy after that, and goes chill for the last track.Do you have any idea how much music I listen to? A lot, a lot of music, new and old. There is very little variation from episode to episode, the subject is always the same, the best music I've heard since the last podcast episode in as many genres as I can keep a hand in. Ignoring the toxic horseshit of the music business public relations industry and focusing on quality, not booty or bling. If someone is doing it better than me let me know I wanna hear it. For real. Comment, fight (verbally) about music, enjoy all the flavors, don't just sit there and eat whatever food is served to you, this isn't third grade cafeteria hour.Excerpts from this episode:Abul Mogard: In a studded processionDijon: (Freak It)Water From Your Eyes: Life SignsJesse Royal & Yohan Marley: BlessingCordyceps: Murder AllKimmortal: I Just Wanna KnowFeel free to follow me on the Insta (owned by one of the garbag-iest Americans going) where I conversate as themagic_organ. It has been a garbage can summer for pop music and mainstream hip hop, and while those are the most money making sectors of the recorded music business, there is plenty of action from other parts of our culture that is worthy of Song of the Summer status. That is what The Magic Organ is all about, pushing up quality regardless of commercial domination, fuq the music business.Song of the Summer can qualify as such for many different reasons, at least here at The Magic Organ it works that way. It could be catchy af like the profane opener from Laura Jane Grace. It could be a sound or a vibe or a sound that creates a vibe like in the second track from Karol G. It could be a ramped up energy like the tunes from Anamanaguchi and The Armed, two surprising rock/rawk picks for The Magic Organ Guy. Or a tune might line up with other things that have been going on this summer like YoungBoy Never Broke Again's tune, My Shit, and the tune I Steal What I Want. There can be any number of reasons. The new Sabrina Carpenter record is a tragic biscuit, the Lorde record was pretty bad, the Charlie XCX record was not so great (the last one was majorly hyped so it's not surprising) so give the other side of town a shot. Thanks for listening and hit me up with your six pack of bangers if you have the skills, pickin' ain't easy!Excerpts from this episode:Laura Jane Grace: Your God (God's Dick)KAROL G: Ivonny BonitaAnamanaguchi: SparklerGelli Haha: Funny MusicYoungBoy Never Broke Again: My ShitThe Armed: I Steal What I Wantcoatshek: LabyrinthFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. It was a struggle but there will be a Best Songs of the Summer episode next week heads up on that, but not this week. This week is just more dancefloor bangers, weird ass indie music, and a rare pop track kicking off the episode that I actually think is pretty great. Circling back one has to wonder with the absence of a clear song of the summer and what I see as some more quality indie rock and left field hip hop hitting the earholes out there whether we are in the midst of some sort of cultural shift.Only time will tell and that's why you play the games -- to see what happens. If you are somewhere out there sitting in a beach chair and you think you can take on The Magic Organ guy, I invite you for the umpteenth time to throw down the gauntlet and roll out with your playlist. First off the mistakes. I try to use the mistakes I make during the spieling of an episode to give that musical outfit more space. In this episode I mistakenly said that Kin'Gongolo Kiniata is from Kenya (you know, all the Ks) when they hail from the Congo. The Congo and its people (often under slave labor type circumstances) power your phones with minerals and they provided the uranium for Uncle Sam to drop atomic bombs on Japan. Weird. Don't miss out on the documentary Soundtrack for a Coup D'Etat which mixes music and politics and violence.Otherwise, this episode continues on the themes established by The Magic Organ and just keeps celebrating how much great music there is to listen to these days. So much music from all over the world, don't sleep on it.As always thanks for listening, spread the word if you have a mouth.Excerpts from this episode:Lyra Pramuk: MeridianKin'Gongolo Kiniata: AngoisseDeath in Vegas: HazelSami Galbi: WinNikki Nair & Uffie: The ButtonJames Holden & Waclaw Zimpel: Sparkles, Crystals, MiraclesFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. Episode 107! Another slamming best of 2025 thus far episode celebrating the deluge of new music from the first half of this year. No need to listen to the new Miley Cyrus biscuit, or the Lorde snoozefest, or the narcissistic Kesha record, nevermind the latest Justin Bieber tragedy (oh how low can the IQ go? pretty low, apparently). There is so much shit to listen to.I mighta have gotten the band name and the song title backwards in the case of the fifth excerpt. The outfit is Bejuco, the album is Machete and the track is Me Mueve el Tambo. I have left a long trail of mangled Spanish and African words but on the up side I love Latin music and African music and this record by Bejuco is a mash of them both. Enjoy. As usual, I throw down the gauntlet and if you have six tracks that you think could hang with my choices then come forth and offer them, be a guest DJ if the tracks pass the smell test. So much new music is released over the course of a year and because it is a constant struggle to push the super high quality music that has little to no marketing budget it makes perfect sense to do a best of 2025 thus far this year episode. With another one on the way pronto. As a listener across almost all of the genres I can say that 2025 has been super fruitful, a landslide of new music that I hope continues. The year end lists tend to be lopsided in favor of releases from the second half of the year so mid year episodes fulfill an important mission: great shit gets released all year round. In this case a special shout out to the Ale Hop record released around the end of January, the Agender punk record, and the Raul Monsalve Latin Afrobeat record, all going on the best of 2025 list, hell all six of the records with excerpts in this episode may make my year end list.Great episode, thanks for listening!Excerpts from this episode:Ale Hop & Titi Bakorta: La Danza del PajaritoBen LaMar Gay: the glorification of small victoriesCivilistajavel!: XIIIAgender: LogoRaul Monsalve y los Forajidos: Como el SolLos Piranas: El aguazo de Javier FelipeFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. Halfway through 2025, gotta couple of best of 2025 episodes coming out in the next two weeks, it's been a smoking year for new music, my best of year list candidates are many and they are righteous. This episode sports a pair of cumbia tracks and a pair of darker electronic tracks, hence the name the hard shit and the party shit. A lot of folks will get down with dancefloor banger electro but the more abstract electronic can be very satisfying to listen to as well. We do have some dancefloor banging out of Tunisia so don't sleep on that. As well as a track showcasing some traditional African musical virtuosity out of Mali. Thanks for listening and step to it if you can get 6 tunes that I might not know and can get with; be in touch The Magic Organ is open, wide open.Excerpts from this episode:Frente Cumbiero: Buziraco de PaseoNazar: OpenKasse Mady Diabate & Hawa Kasse Mady Diabate: NIAGALEBAWrecked Lightship: Delinquent SpiritsAmmar 808: Lelliri YammaLa Banda Chuska: Cumbia ChuskaFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. Let's have our own parade and not one based on domination, violence and killing. The Magic Organ freak parade has variety, features people from all over the world, and values their cultures and contributions to humanity without collapsing into New Age bullshit. We do all the musics and it will get rough. We kick things off with a collaboration between a Romani Balkan brass band and a Canadian guitarist, things get shaggy with a spicy hip hop track called Roof Roof, heads into some Brazilian jazz and indie mashed together by a Japanese female guitarist, segue into a blend of Afrobeat and Latin music (super highly recommended if you like groove music) and then out with some singer/songwriter and a punk rawk track from McCluskey. Whew, that's a lotta action in 13 minutes. As always, thanks for listening and stay safe out there.Excerpts from this episode:Fanfare Ciocarlia & Adrian Raso: The Devil Rides AgainZukenee: Roof RoofMei Semones: Tora MoyoBejuco: FatimaCatherine CampbellMcClusky: people persFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. 2025 has already been a banner year for new music, at least as far as I'm concerned, and we're not even at the halfway point. As I'm one of the only music critics listening to all the musics, I speak with knowledge that the continent of Africa, closely followed by Central and South America are the drivers of great music right now. It's a sad time for rock music and by default white people who make and listen to rock music. If you want white music I would refer you to heavy metal which works for non brunch white folks but that genre while reviled by the upper classes is global and there are heavy metal outfits all over the globe.Episode 103 features two records from Africa, one from Latin America, one from punkers and a heavy metal record by an outfit called Warbringer. The last track by Azuka Moweta inspired the title of Episode 103, Incomprehensibly Funky. I would urge folks to check out more than the 2 minute excerpt featured here, it's just a taste of how the whole record goes. It really is incomprehensibly funky, it is hard to imagine how they conceived of and performed this music; it is so rhythmically complex, but it is sophisticated from head to toe. Thanks for listening!Excerpts from this episode:Ellis-D: InsectFamo Mountain: Me & the Chief Were Childhood Friends (I Have Protection)Whatever the Weather II: 20 CJulian Mayorga: El VorrhWarbringer: NeuromancerAzuka Moweta and his Anioma Brothers Band: Nne Bu OgoFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. What makes people open their minds? Why are so many folks locked in to very definite categories/liefstyles that all come with their own soundtracks? These are the questions that I think about. For some folks it is a question of money but for a lot of folks it's something else cuz with streaming stores providing the immediate access to every small record I've suggested in the 100+ episodes of the Magic Organ it's not there aren't bangers out there, it's bangers galore.Could it be my picks aren't good? No fucking way, absolutely not, no way. There are so many great musicians out there, tons and tons across the globe and people here are locked in to Posty Malone and the Tay Tay brands. It's like eating corn chips every meal, you come to this world and you get one shot and you listen to corn chips.I don't get it, but if you're here thanks for peeping the Magic Organ and this is episode is so special it's called Extra Sauce. I mean it's gotta be named something.Excerpts from this episode:Djrum: WaxcapChime Oblivion: Heated HorsesDerya Yildirim & Grup Simsek: Hop BicoYetsuby: 4EVADeerhoof: Return of the Return of the Fire Trick StarRaz Fresco: Earth SpinFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. First off a coupla housekeeping items. I mentioned the song tile, Comet of End Times (track 4), but not the band, the band is Sarcator and it's a really good metal record and folks should check it. Secondly, Kombilesa Mi (track 6 excerpt) is from Palenque and they perform in Spanish and their indigenous Palenque language called Palenquero, a blend of Spanish, African languages, and other European languages. Yes, I googled that. Otherwise, 2025 continues to be a banner for new music thus far as evidence by multiple 7 track 13 minutes of pure fire from The Magic Organ. As I say in the episode once you ice pick the heavy crust of corporate music and get down beneath that there is an absolute ton of great music out there. Also musical genres are bullshit, folks shouldn't be listening by genre but by quality.Enjoy.Excerpts from this episode:Raul Monsalve y los Forajidos: Como El SolGordon Grdina: DISSOLUTIONBarker: Difference and RepetitionSarcator: Comet of End TimesDJ Elmoe: The Show ArrivedKombilesa Mi: Asina Gueaya: heat deathFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. Episode 100! I will not spoil the incredible insights gathered during the effort expended to make 100 new music podcasts focusing on all genres of music. Needless to say the umbrella. under which all these conclusions fall involves the idea that this is absolutely a golden age of recorded music, there is so much great new music to listen to and powerful cultural and economic factors limit the number of people who reach the same conclusion.Of course, if you are reading this podcast blurb and you are listening or even considering what I'm saying here, I appreciate you and urge you to listen as widely as you can. Thanks for listening, you should listen for yourself to make yourself a slightly better person as I believe that listening to great music can help to open a person's mind.Excerpts from this episode:Kaito Winse: An KoriKilbourne: Bald BoysLos Piranas: Con mi burrito sabanero voy directo al mataderoclipping.: Run ItThe Tubs: NarcissistDub Syndicate: IntercommunicationsFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ.
