John, upon returning to the force, wants a human partner as it was good enough for his partner and, in trying to do so, throws his MX out of his car onto the highway. His replacement is a DRN named Dorian (Michael Ealy), who had been decommissioned along with the rest of the DRNs when they were believed their emotions made them unstable and harmful. Unlike the MXs, who are very stereotypical, vacant, and unemotional robots, the DRNs and Dorian have emotions, look more human, and still possess the strength, intelligence, and combat skills of the other MXs. Over the course of the series, John and Dorian solve a variety of crimes all usually related to the group that lead to the botched raid John had conducted known as Insindicate. The series ends with a revelation that Dorian somehow contains organic human memories of childhood and the two having now become friends and good partners.
