In ep 168 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Stephanie Cannon joins Sam and Mark to talk about a fascinating twist in a Young Adult audio book. We create a character with an accent who's first language is not English and learn that it matters less what the accent is, as long as it's consistent and you believe it! Also in the show how to cope with a script where some of the words are missing - deliberately! Plus an audio drama clip about someone who could be in big trouble. Our wildcards see a baker kneading dough, a clairvoyant becoming possessed, and a sad script turned happy. Our VO question this week is all about patience and consistency within the Voice Acting business!Get involved! And as I was sharpening my pencil, the idea came to me and... and I wrote this:“Look how gracefully these pencil shavings tumble like falling leaves, now on the table and now on the floor, what a deliberate and destructive process this is. And if, for any reason, there was ever a whole world inside a pencil, this would be the surest way to bring that world to an end.”Script 2Beside me, Papa smiled and nodded. "Gala is very ~~~~" he said, putting his hand on my shoulder. His voice slipped into that funny up-and-down thing it always did when he spoke English, as if his vocal cords were riding a carousel. "I am sure ~~~~ happy here."The word happy caught on the collar of Papa's jacket. It was a light blue lie. I wasn't happy to be here. I didn't want to be in Scotland at all. We'd love your feedback - and if you listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, hit the follow button today!**Listen to all of our podcasts here - you can also watch on YouTube, or say to your smart speaker "Play How Do You Say That?!"About our guest: Stephanie Cannon is a UK-based American voice actor, motion capture performer and stiltwalker! A script that makes Sam anxious and gets her heart pounding... and How to approach a medical tongue-twister without tripping over.We discuss one area of voice work where the clients aren't rushing towards AI, and another area that's awash with our artificial enemy. In ep 166 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Chloe Gilgallon joins Sam and Mark to talk about how you start a read so that it sounds warm from the get-go? We explore why you're often cast because of your vocal age and ask why, during a first read, you settle into a script, and might want to do the beginning again at the end. We have a discussion about changing styles in your head mid-read, which can be quite subtle, but it makes a huge difference on mic. Our fun facts are about smoothies, The Who and a woodwork project, and the wildcards include an argument in dialogue, a relaxed giraffe, and Miss Marple comes to the rescue! Our VO question this week is all about ADR - what it is and how mastering improvisation is really important!Get involved! The blinds have been pulled down and shut tightly, and I’m offered nothing but water in a paper cup. As I wait, I wonder if they’ll offer a phone call.Having never been in this situation before I’m unsure how to behave. I wasn’t so much as sent to the headmaster’s office at school. My entire life has been kept in order, following each rule carefully, ticking every box and now I’m about to be punished. It suddenly feels unfair, like all the years of good behaviour should count in my favour and I should be let off.Script 2However you choose to feed your baby, you may want to experience skin to skin contact after birth. If you’re unable to hold your baby straight after birth and you have a partner, they can have skin to skin contact with your baby until you are ready to take over. We understand that everyone is different, and your midwife will be there to support you in this first hour after birth.Remember, babies need a lot of love and attention as they get used to their new world and it’s not possible to spoil them. In ep 165 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Richard Koslowsky joins Sam and Mark to talk about how some scripts don't make sense until you read them out loud, and why you should always ask a client if they want your recording raw or processed. There's a distinct lack of caffeine from one of us and we ask 'Is there a more trustworthy accent than soft Yorkshire'? We learn not to make too many assumptions about a script, and bring you woman who gets electric shocks and seems to enjoy it a little too much! There's also a very wise old tree telling a tale! Count the rings! Our VO question this week is all about whether you should record and mix your own demo reels from scratch, or create them from work you've already done, or hand the process off to a demo reel production house.Get involved! Preparing for this incident involved the National Trust being sent a series of videos of burning wigs so that the safest approach - both for Keira and the building - could be worked out. Meanwhile two days were spent covering the delicate marble floor with its exact replica, made of flame-retardant wood. Over 150 candles were used on specially-commissioned candelabra, and stunt people dressed as 'guests' were in place to catch any falling candles.Script 2We want our highly valued clients to have the finest experience when choosing a light commercial vehicle with us, with it being a purchase of such importance. We expertly source and sell the most desirable, in-demand, and rare stock, comprising of a wide range of cars, vans, 4x4s, and specialist vehicles. We have a highly experienced team with over three generations of knowledge and expertise about every different vehicle brand. In ep 163 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Karl Jenkinson joins Sam and Mark to talk about narrating a story with more than one character accent, and listening to the overall sense of a piece - and the pictures it gives you in your own mind. We look into how to make a high end script relatable by creating luxury with a hint of humour. We get confused between Steam Punk and Punk Rock, and wonder about an amazing mechanical man. The wildcard section of the show introduces us to a gluttonous woman who can't help gorging herself whilst narrating a story. Our VO question this week is all about the personality you need for modern documentary narration... from Call Me a Cabbie to Come Dine With Me and Gogglebox... and Sam tells the story of her time narrating Britain's Poshest Brothel!Get involved!
