❝I don’t know much about Godzilla movies, but I know enough about movies to know that Godzilla Minus One has everything the body needs:
Starting with the big stuff, Godzilla himself is absolutely incredible. The visual effect is of such a high quality that at times I felt I had the suspension of disbelief of a child. But that’s all just a cherry on top. Down at ground level is a story that leaves nothing to be desired. Among other things it’s the tale of one man’s struggle to rid himself of his survivor’s guilt following the Japanese army’s defeat after World War II.
On a larger scale the story is a metaphor for post-WWII Japan’s fear of a loss of cultural identity to the looming threat of American influence and power done in the most Japanese way possible with a giant city-destroying monster and crowds of people running away screaming. Even if that’s not really your thing or you’ve never seen a single Godzilla movie you can and should still check it out because this movie brings it on every level.❞

The Killer is about an assassin who for the first time botches a job and has to deal with the consequences. Throughout the film we see how meticulous this man is in the planning and execution of his work. We see his seemingly unlimited resources and false identities put to use internationally while he fills in the downtime with voiceover of his murder wisdom and nihilistic philosophy.
All of this would be great if there was a story attached because this is a film we’re talking about, not a TV show, but that’s exactly what it feels like in the end, a very good pilot episode of a TV series meant to establish a main character. It feels like an introduction with no followup, like a series of events that suddenly ends.
A person has to be killed and the killer kills them with little to no trouble. He even complains early on about the lack of creativity in his latest gigs. One would expect this to herald the coming of some exciting and unique killing sequences, but no. Just about everybody gets shot with a gun after a bit of stalking so we really never see his killing skills at their best, even after things get personal. Needless to say this is one leaves a lot to be desired.

Napoleon focuses almost exclusively on Mr. Bonaparte’s relationship with his hussy wife Josephine, and not so much on painting the portrait of a small statured military genius turned emperor that conquered most of Europe, you know, a topic of absolute fascination. This makes it a frustrating movie, because it’s not like it needed to be ALL guts and glory, but did it have to be mostly simping and cuckery?
Perhaps this would have worked if there was any spark between these two characters, but the movie makes it difficult to care about two people that mostly stare at each other blankly and then go cheat on one another, especially when the filmmakers fail to properly connect those story threads to his military motivations. So even if that was the point it still falls flat.
And I mostly blame Joaquin Phoenix who is horribly miscast. At this point in his career he’s too much of a wild card to have the discipline for a role like this. That which made him perfect for movies like Joker or The Master makes him a liability in this historical drama, hence people laughing at inappropriate times in my theater.
Frankly, the movie is a damn mess. It tries to be funny when it should be serious. It’s too stale when it should be romantic, and all of the interesting historical plot points are glanced over in favor of flatline Josephine. Prepare to be underwhelmed and let down.

The Holdovers is what they call an “instant classic.” It’s what people are talking about when they say “they don’t make ‘em like they used to.” It’s one of those snapshot of life, full range of emotion type of movies that keeps you hooked from beginning to end because the story flows as naturally as a stream as opposed to the artificial canal of formulaic story structure. It’s nostalgic without being forceful. It’s hilarious in a subtle, very down-to-earth way. And it’s never more melancholic or dramatic than it needs to be.
It’s everything that Wes Anderson movies used to be, before he left reality for his quirkily filmed stage-plays. Instead, this movie reads like a classic American novel, with a limited cast and setting and by the end you fully understand (and therefore love) each character because they ARE real people trapped in the tragic shortcomings of real life where the losers lose while watching the winners win and making the best of it regardless.
Therefore it’s not triumphant. It’s not even particularly heartfelt or inspiring. Hardly anything changes from beginning to end, other than a greater understanding and connection between a small group of disparate people. And to that end, it is beautiful.

Talk to Me is a refreshing take on the possession genre, taking the essence of an exorcism or seance movie and reducing it to an immature party drug allegory. The premise is so captivating and terrifying that the film doesn’t need to rely on jump scares, of which I don’t recall there being a single one—the mark of a true horror movie.
Instead the horror comes when you realize the complete lack of reverence that the young party kid cast has for discovering a method of communicating with spirits of the dead. Instead of falling to their knees and repenting to God having found proof of the afterlife, they film each other freaking out, not under the influence of drugs and alcohol, but under the influence of these ghosts they willingly allow into their bodies. The kids eventually become addicted to the act, including the dopamine hit from carelessly posting these videos online. The horrific thing is that nobody is afraid of the horrific thing happening right before their eyes and iPhones.
This of course reflects the age we live in, where nothing is too sacred to post and everyone seems keen to take a video of someone in distress rather than step in and help them out. Carelessly conjuring fiendish spirits for the almighty click is a terrifying glance at how the pursuit of digital attention is slowly but surely dehumanizing and desensitizing all of us digital addicts as we communicate exclusively through our devices instead of face to face, hence the brilliance of the title.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a mediocre attempt to adapt a seemingly unadaptable video game, which is about a guy working a security job at a Chuck E. Cheese-like establishment, only to realize that the seemingly friendly android mascots have a murderous will of their own.
Upside: the actualized look of Freddy’s androids is great.
Downside: nearly everything else.
Because when it comes to the story, it feels like they wrote a draft or two at the most and then decided to go straight into production. Half the runtime is about this security guy trying to solve a mystery about who kidnapped his little brother when they were kids.
Meanwhile his little sister is a telepath and can communicate with all of the androids, who as it turns out, are actually possessed by the ghosts of murdered children. At that point we simply don’t need the little brother plot when giant anthropomorphic pizza place animals are threatening to murder your little sister. Let’s focus on what’s actually interesting here.
But no, a movie that should have been self-aware of its own ridiculousness spent way too much time telling a completely unrelated story and taking itself too seriously when it should have been telling its own backstory while delivering fun scares.

Quentin Tarantino has said for years that he’ll make ten films and then retire because directors only make worse and worse films as they age. Somehow the old-timer Martin Scorsese is a rare exception to this general rule, of which Killers of the Flower Moon is further evidence.
Showcasing the lengths to which people will go to obtain money and power is certainly a central theme of Marty’s more iconic films, and here’s another for that list. Only this time it’s a significantly more subtle approach than the likes of Goodfellas, The Departed, or Wolf of Wall Street. Murder and death isn’t handled with style and flair set to a Rolling Stones soundtrack, but with deference and care and a cold objectivity because the victims aren’t gangsters, but members of the Osage Nation, bumped off one by one by white men looking to gain control of oil discovered on Osage tribal land. It’s hauntingly tragic, shockingly inhuman, and beautifully rendered.
Not so coincidentally, as Marty’s time on this Earth elongates, so too do the runtimes of his films, the last two being 3 and a half hours. I for one consider this a blessing from a master filmmaker with nothing left to prove. So if you have a problem with it, watch it on Apple TV+ so that every 20 minutes you can pause the movie to take your damn ADHD medication, sit back down, shut up, watch the movie and be thankful that Martin Scorsese still has plenty to give.

The Exorcist: Believer ups the exorcism ante by giving us not one possessed little girl, but TWO possessed little girls. It follows the original Exorcist film’s true to life approach, honing in on the human drama of the characters and using this knowledge to heighten the intensity of the exorcism scenes. But does it go far enough? Not quite. Like Creed III, the final fight feels just a beat short of truly earning its payoff.
And that payoff was designed to come down to a simple choice that the odd team of exorcist superfriends (a witch doctor, a catholic priest, a baptist minister, the parents, etc) were forced to make, only that choice was written as to be stacked in the favor of one of the girls over the other, thereby weakening the emotional significance and intended tragedy of the climax.
So just like The Creator, the movie is very effective and creepy up until the third act where it comes off as rushed and contrived, and therefore doesn’t hold a votive candle to its predecessors. Speaking of which, they brought back the original characters and for some stupid reason did absolutely nothing with them.

The Creator checks the box for our ration of quality high-concept science fiction that today’s audiences only receive on an annual basis.
Appropriately set 100 years after 1970, the film is a futuristic retelling of the Vietnam War (but this time against robots) in a frightening but probably accurate vision of the future of artificial intelligence as the inevitable next step in human evolution centered around a human/robot hybrid messiah figure in the form of a little girl named Alphie, short for Alpha Omega (as in Jesus’ final words in the book of Revelation), and her parents Mary and Joseph, I mean Maya and Joshua, sent by the Creator to end the war and bridge the gap between humankind and AI.
So yea, there’s A LOT going on here. The only downside is that even with this amazing intersection of themes, the overall story is bogged down by too many ideas and unnecessary twists and turns and would have benefited from some streamlining because with so much to get through it oftentimes feels a bit rushed, which only compounds confusion and dampens the emotional significance, which is too bad because the conceptualization and production value is so damn high.
Don’t let that deter you from seeing it, but unfortunately there’s lots of room for improvement on this one.

Dumb Money was a tough watch for me because to this day (and to my deep shame) I’m a diamond handed ape, so reliving the 2021 GameStop saga meant I had a pit in my stomach from beginning to end.
Of course one can’t help but compare this to the other comedic, “stick it to those wall street bastards” film: The Big Short. But the core difference is that the characters in The Big Short were primary players in the story of the 2008 financial crisis whereas the GME saga involved millions of individuals (known as apes) all banded together across the globe following the lead of a hilarious madman named Roaring Kitty, AKA Keith Gill.
Unfortunately, this movie chose to tell the story of a select few of those apes where it should have just been the Keith Gill vs Wall Street movie coupled with random people around the world interacting with them on Reddit and Youtube.
On top of that the film is way too immature for its own good. For a movie telling a true story, everyone behaves like they’re in a mid-2000’s Judd Apatow film. This is precisely how Wall Street Bets of Reddit should have been characterized, not every character in the film.
In total, this movie manages to take one of the wildest stories in history and suck most of the meaning and fun out of it by bypassing important events yet emphasizing unfunny moments with characters that we don’t care about, and then pissing me off by showing them showing off their paper hands while Tik Tok dancing.

A Haunting in Venice once again puts Hercule Poirot to the task of figuring out who-dun-it, but this time with an interesting supernatural element that somewhat turns this story into a horror film.
The movie does a good job of presenting questionable events involving spirits and ghosts to the point that their realness is arguable either way based on one’s personal interpretation, while also thematically plugging directly into Hercule’s personal story of having lost his faith in God because of the horrible things he’s seen over the course of his career.
However, in the end it is a very subtle movie, as really nobody is heavily suspected by the audience or otherwise up until Hercule figures everything out after a single conversation per suspect and exposes the killer in one fell swoop and then immediately regains his faith because he believes he saw a ghost.
So just like the aforementioned faith theme there are two interpretations of this subtle quality to the film: one that it is simply and classically told, and the other that it is tired and lazy.
I lack a strong emotional connection to this movie, so it wouldn’t take the world’s greatest detective to figure out where I stand…

The Nun 2 left me none too pleased. A corny opener, but I’ll never be able to make that joke again so let’s savor it.
Once again a demon entity possesses someone in order to get a thing it needs to break into the physical world, and yet at the same time it is capable of affecting the physical world for things like murder regardless of having a meat puppet do things for it because it doesn’t need the magical thing it needs to do stuff with, thereby having it both ways at all times while withholding some basic limitation by which to hang a conducive or interesting plot.
So once again we get a cookie-cutter, snooze-inducing story with minimal character development pocked by jump-scare set-pieces that admittedly are sometimes fresh but obnoxious all the same because they’re still fucking jump-scares. Mostly they lead to more laughter than scares, but maybe that’s a point in the movie’s favor…
So the heroes have to get a magical thing to stop the demon and then they do in banal Harry Potter fashion, bringing to mind the eternal wisdom of Peter Jackson in not relying heavily upon magic to carry the dramatic fire in Lord of the Rings, because magic in storytelling is more often than not too simplistic and meaningless and in this case lowers the dramatic majesty of Christianity to the triviality of paganistic wizardry.

The Equalizer 3 is a decent end to the Equalizer trilogy, a series of films following in the footsteps of John Wick, Taken, Jack Reacher, and nearly every Clint Eastwood movie whereby an older fella comes out of professional people killer retirement to once again punish those taking advantage of others in the classic Western style of one man versus a web of corruption, specifically in the “a stranger comes to town” style since this iteration takes place entirely in a small village in Sicily overrun by the mafia.
However, this movie is basically a “feel good” story within that genre, as the story lacks any meaningful sacrifice on the part of ancillary characters or even the Equalizer himself (AKA Robert McCall), greatly diminishing the overall emotional impact of the story. Put short, a problem arises and then McCall quickly and badassly takes care of it without issue or loss of life or anything at all really.
Watching Denzel Washington brutally murder bad guys will make you feel bloody righteous in the moment, but for lack of any deeper meaning or significance you’ll quickly forget this story. Feels good, but not memorable.
So is it bad? No. It’s just cinematic comfort food, so you’re not missing anything if you skip this one.

Gran Turismo is a very good movie, but it doesn’t quite make it into the “great” category. And the reason for this is simple. While it has excellent character development and a really unique story about a video gamer turned professional racer, it feels like a 6-part mini series that some fan editor cut down to a two hour run time. With zero puns intended, it’s a bit rushed. What this means is that little character moments and big plot elements that should have had more emphasis are quickly breezed over, leading to an overall feeling of being slightly underwhelmed. However, the story has such a fresh approach to the racing genre and David Harbour’s character is so good that it easily makes up for these shortcomings, even if you’ve never heard of the video game this true story is based on.

Blue Beetle isn’t the worst movie in the DCEU, but it’s by far the most weary. It’s essentially “superhero fatigue the movie” because there’s nothing we haven’t seen before while ALSO having trouble taking itself seriously while ALSO wishing it was a Marvel movie.
A down on his luck fella gets bit by a radioactive spid— Sorry, a blue space scarab burrows into his spine turning him into a reluctant and awkward superhero. Then the evil head of a giant weapons manufacturer steals the secrets of this scarab to make a fleet of men in iron suits called Ironma— sorry again, I mean OMACs.
Meanwhile everything feels random and disconnected from everything else that’s happening, as if the script was really long so they just deleted every other scene leading to constant confusion and contradiction of character.
Maybe a more serious version of this would’ve worked back at the very outset of the DCEU, but at this point it’s just tired and weak.
And also all white people are racist.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is terrific. I definitely had a big smile on my face for most of this movie.
And why’s that? Nostalgia? Revisiting my childhood?
No.
I loved this movie because it felt like the people making it actually cared about the CHARACTERS, and that the characters behaved and spoke true to themselves as mutants and/or teenagers or father figures or relatably embittered and vengeful bad guys.
And then built overtop of that is a clear “destroy all humans” plot that easily carries a simple story of longing to belong in a world that typically runs from or destroys anything regarded as unfamiliar or alien, which is exactly how people would initially react to four teenage mutant ninja turtles, their giant rat father, and all of their mutant bad guy cousins seeking revenge for humanity’s mutant-phobia.
This movie brings it on every level: A fresh and apt style of animation, good humor, good fun, motivated bad guys with a sympathetic plot, excellent characterization and fulfillment of individual character arcs, a KILLER soundtrack, lots of pizza and all wrapped up in the most comprehensive and appropriately awkward origin story the turtles have ever seen on the big screen. All that’s left to say my dear McCurdy, is cowabunga.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a decent movie, no question about it. It’s well made and at times has genuine moments of horror.
Unfortunately, it’s another example of one of these movies that just doesn’t carry the ball far enough to deserve remembrance. It is exactly what one expects, and nothing more. And I hate saying this about a movie that has the balls to kill a child, but overall this small story such as it is would have been better off remaining as a part of a larger one.
And when tasked with pinpointing exactly what’s missing, I believe it to be a certain amount of cleverness within the confines of the premise. As a big fan of this brand of story, both horror and the “a bunch of people trapped in a confined space within a desperate situation” genres, what’s needed is some clever setup and payoff, especially because we as an audience already know that this Dracula tale is going to end in tragedy.
Instead what we get in the end is more or less going through the motions as each cast member gets picked off one by one without any fulfillment of character or personal sacrifice or anything else that may have made this story more than just scraping the bottom of the Dracula lore barrel.
