Description

Norm Nathan’s Vault of Silliness will air the personal collection of the Norm Nathan Show for which I produced on WBZ-AM from 1989 until his sudden passing on October 29th, 1996.

Norm spent 50+ years in Boston Broadcasting working at WCOP, WESX, WMEX, WHDH, WEEI, WRKO, WMRE and WBZ. Whether news, talk or music…he did it, sometimes combining them all.

Many of the recordings you will hear were sent to me by a fan and friend, Joan McCool. Others are from my personal collection.

They will air as recorded, with the warmth an old, analog tape recording provides. Some with good, ol’fashioned home editing of the play/pause button. And ALL with the ever-comforting voice of Uncle Norm.

Thank you just so darn much for tuning in!

Good gosh almighty, Episode 280 is broadcasting from the recently reorganized, plush but not overly ostentatious Norch Studios! This will be a quick hit of a NNS from March 19th, 1994, with the ever so clever title: A Quick Hit from Some Nit Wits It features quick chatter and choppy edits. A Jack Harte snowy traffic report with US AIR Shuttle as sponsor Moving on to the Norm Show Open and some guest info that we never hear from. Then Jack and Norm catching a train amongst more snowy traffic Callers: Caller: Poem about growing old Caller: with radio on in background Marie talking about her chihuahua, Peppe. Monica from Nahant! Asking the burning question: Was Sunflower a ‘used horse?’ Norm explains that is not the correct term. She also asks to write a note to Bob Raleigh to put a birthday in HIS birthday book. So why did she need Norm to do this favor? You’ll have to stay tuned to find out and it’s pretty funny and ridiculous. Wolfie aka Loco Lobo on a payphone And a quick call from Generosa and her cuckoo clock Other highlights: I join in studio with someone else who I believe to be Rod the security guard.  We learn about the latest temperature monitoring technology. Norm mentions trying to remain on the air long enough to reach May 24th which would be his 50th Anniversary in radio!  A barn burner rendition of ‘Hello Bluebird’ accompanied by some wacky band members Ever wonder what would be my epitaph? Well, you’re going to find out. I participate in a brief Academy Award quiz with that led to some talk about winners in different categories And Norm reads a sweet story of a 5th grade class from Oceanside, CA. Lastly, we hear some more teasers for guests we never hear from here, at least. John J. Moran creator of ‘Daring Passages – The Board game in a Bottle’ promo for following night Author Michael Rosen ‘The Kids Best Dog Book and Field Guide to Neighborhood Dogs’ Ep 280, A Quick Hit from Some Nit Wits, jabs its way to your ears, now.

Thank you once more for all the support in our attempt to achieve the Listener’s Choice Award in the inaugural Podcast Tonight Awards. Sadly, we did not win, but, as they say…and I do mean it, it was an honor to be nominated and make it to the finals. I’m looking forward to it increasing our reach, listens, subscribers and supporters. Again, always take that brief second to click on the Thumbs Up button while listening, subscribe everywhere and I’d love to hear from more of you in the comments. As always, your support is greatly appreciated! Ep 278 here and it’s a DBG from March 7th, 1992 titled: The Same, But Different  It begins as Norm checks the Traffic with Jack Harte Show Open and a DBG Open Players: The whispery Stacy from Boston Pat in Melrose Mike from Peabody, Ontario Rick in Boston Tony producing and on the phone from MC Jack in traffic Some of these will sound an awful lot like last week’s bdays…Except these come w/ALL the SFX: Lord Snowden Daniel J. Welcome to the maybe Award Winning NNVoS w/TN. It’s maybe because, as of this recording, I have not heard if we were a win/place/show or just a total loser in the Podcast Tonight Awards. I’ll let you know the good or bad news as soon as I do. Let’s say helo to Malaysia, marhaba to Qatar & cómo te va? to Chile! What a nice surprise when checking the analytics after getting the Norch Studios and FuzzyWuzzyProductions up and running again after a weird computer issue. Lucky that I produced enough episodes to cover the downtime! Anyway, that’s a little inside info for you. Indulge me for a moment here: Listenership is increasing but support is waning. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to support the efforts here. It’s been difficult to just cover distribution let alone try to put some aside for the Berklee College of Music’s Norm Nathan Scholarship Fund. Check out the links in the show bio on ways you can do so. I post episode teasers and other things to those subscribed. Lastly, if everyone who listens take a second to click on the thumbs up/like button. THAT helps immensely! If you’ve stopped by and tuned in, give it a click. Housecleaning completed. On to the show!  Possibly by the time this airs the temperature would have moderated a bit. It’s been a good old fashioned N.E. winter, but the month of March brings us hope for spring and all that comes with it, especially Peepers! This month also gives us hope for another phenomenal episode of NNVoS and I’m here to tell you that hope will be fulfilled! We have DBG from March 5th, 1995 which I have titled: Innumerable Incoming Nuptials Players: Todd, former DBG Champion and later, his wife Michelle subs in Jeanie in Roslindale Billy from Cambridge Belle in Rockport Karen Meslener producing and playing in studio Jim Frawley also producing and playing in studio Ken Newman Bdays: Dean Stockwell Marsha Warfield 3/7 Daniel Travanti Peter Wolf Willard Scott Ivan Lendl Lord Snowden Post-Game Callers: Charlie aka Chauncy And a Caller I will name Webster Ep 277, Innumerable Incoming Nuptials, marches its way to your ears now.
There’s still time to keep voting for NNVoS to win the Listener’s Choice Award at the Inaugural Podcast Tonight Awards! The Llnk to do so is below and in the bio. Voting closes on Feb 28th. I do thank ya. We gots ourselves a jumping DBG from February 29th, 1992 which shall be titled: Over Talking Over-talkers Players: Peter from BU Paul in Stoughton Jim from Springfield Debbie in Wellesley Tony producing and playing on the phone from MC Jack Harte in traffic Bdays w/all the SFX: No bdays for 2/29 so Norm jumps to… 3/3 Rhea Perlman 3/4 Paula Prentiss 3/5 Dean Stockwell 3/6 Ed MacMahon Rob Reiner Dates in History: Gone with the Wind won 8 Oscars on February 29th of what year? All right Nathanites, here we are again for another exciting episode of NNVoS. Today features a DBG from February 17th, 1996. It always seemed when Norm got very comfortable with a producer, they would leave and the whole process would start again. It was a tough situation because we lost some good ones. Sooooooo, because producer Ed LeClair was leaving for FL to possibly work at GulfWorld, I will title this, “The Incredible Mr. LeClair.” Norm and Ed discuss all that and the players are introduced. And there’s a whole lot of fun before they finally start the game. Players: Ed LeClair Jack Harte Twin brothers John & Jim from Livonia, MI Bob in Peabody Pete from Lawrence   Bdays: Hal Holbrook Margaret Truman Daniel Jim Brown Michael Jordan Mary Ann Mobley Date in History: The first issue of Newsweek Magazine was published in what year? Ep 275, The Incredible Mr. LeClair, swims its way to your ears, now.
I hope you’re ready for this madness. Lots of laugh out loud moments throughout. Whatever am I talking about? It’s a DBG from February 7th, 1993, that’s what! The title for this gem will be: The Rowdy Babe Radio Revue We begin with a Show Open, Norm reads the Lottery Numbers and the DBG Theme. As promised, whether good or bad news, I’m here to update you on the Podcast Tonight Awards. So, the shortlist was to be announced back on January 26th . I received an email yesterday regarding that. Here’s the latest: NNVoS w/TN was shortlisted to move on to the finals! Winners should be revealed February 28th. We are nominated in the Listener’s Choice Category. What does this mean? It means our work is far from done. The more you and I share, the greater the chances of taking home the distinction. So don’t hesitate, YOUR votes can make a difference! Again, I humbly ask for that vote. The link to do so is below and with your help we can expand the universe of Silliness further and wider than ever before.  Thank you just so darn much! Podcast Tonight Awards https://tinyurl.com/2s3w5ye5
This early February date brings us a DBG from early February 1994. The 5th to be exact. Included here will be the debut of Emilio Marotta who, at the time, was in training. We also hear a traffic report from Jack BUT not for WBZ. Let’s title this one: Exhausting Analytics Players: John in W. Roxbury Helen Libby from VA Chris in MI Tony producing and playing in studio Emilio Marotta in training and first time playing Jack Harte in Traffic Bdays: Red Buttons Roger Staubach Bobby Brown Hank Aaron Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Barrett Strong Barbara Hershey Al Cooper Dead Bdays: John Jefferies, America’s 1st Weatherman AND inventor of the busy signal. Ep 273, Exhausting Analytics, calculates its way to your ears, now.
Welcome back to NNVoS. We have a DBG from January 23rd, 1993 cued up and ready to go. Due to the age range of the players let’s title this one: Awesome Demographics Players: Glenn in Brighton Michael from Chelmsford Kerry from Fort Wayne, IN Kristin in E. Bridgewater Aaron Sawyer in traffic WITH Lisa Reichwein (1st time on the show)! Sid Whittaker producing and playing in studio Tony on the phone Bdays: Anita Pointer Princess Caroline of Monaco Jean Moreau – oui? Richard Dean Anderson Chita Rivera Jerry Kramer Date in History: Casablanca premiered in what year? We are also treated to some great quotes from Vince Lombardi and Norm’s HGPG. Ep 272, Awesome Demographics, charts its way to your ears in 3, 2 & 1.
“Salom” to Uzbekistan, “Howzit” to Zimbabwe and “Senga!” to Ethiopia. The International Fund for Silliness continues to expand its reach! Thanks for being here. What’s on the docket today? Why it’s a NNS from January 21st, 1996, which shall be titled: Nathanized We begin our adventure with Norm teasing the weekend’s upcoming guests and a shout out to yours truly. Next, it’s a WBZ StormCenter Promo and then on to our guest, author Marybeth Bond…orrrrrr maybe not Suddenly we are listening to some classic radio chatter between Norm and Lovell Dyett! Now it’s time for an actual guest: Greg Smith, author of “Beer: A History of Suds and Civilization from Mesopotamia to Microbreweries.” The interview HOPS around a bit but does come to a HEAD. And calls are on TAP but the taps are dry as no callers are featured. Next up was Scott J. Kerman who wrote “All Sold Out! How to Sneak into Sporting Events and Concerts.” This was his second time on the show and his next conquest was to sneak into the Superbowl. Norm really loved talking to him and he tells some great stories. We take some Calls: Anne Jill Russ Helen in Belmont, not Helene Al And a mystery Caller Special Announcement! Let’s cut away to the Paul Parent Gardening Show talking crosspollinating grasses and deep roots with caller Richard Back to Norm talking to Diane, about a guest we had on, the announced yet not included Marybeth Bond and her book: Traveler’s Tales: A Woman’s World. It was a book Norm highly praised for its excellent writing. Let’s now hear from Mack talking about Superbowl 30. Norm had some trivia which you’ll have to wait to hear. Buuuut, if you’re a Patron supporting the show, you already know the answer as I used it for this week’s episode preview. The lovely Monica from Cleveland, OH is on the line – Norm recently proposed marriage in a letter he wrote but had not mailed yet. She worked with Mickey and Gilley (a pair we’ve had on the show) on WERE in Cleveland. She was kind enough to ask about my then health condition: recovering from Chicken Pox a mere month from my 29th bday. Boy, THAT was a whole lotta fun. Marilyn in West Virginny and a story about a clunk Norm gives us a heads-up about a guest for the next show: Mr. Cheap Oh, well looky here…It’s Mark Waldstein aka Mr. Cheap and his book, “Mr. Cheap’s Boston.” In studio! They take call from the three C’s: Carol, Caroline and Chip Ep 271, Nathanized, tempers its way to your ears, now.
Let’s start off right away with the title for this here Ep number 270. The ADHD Radio Free-for-All I had to trim this up quite a bit as it’s really scattered, hence the name. We are all over the place but it certainly keeps things interesting and it’s nice to hear all the WBZ voices of the past. By the scrawled dates on the cassette this is a NNS from January 16th and maybe February 25th, 1995. It begins with guest Richard Smith (who sounds a lot like Fred from NJ) talking about his book: “Richard Smith’s Guide to Getting Even! 143 Lessons in Etiquette for a World Gone Mad.  (Including the Getting Even Rude Whistle)!” It’s a wildly accurate interview with insights that are as relevant today as they were 31 years ago. Calls are taken: Bill in Lynn Dolemite from MI Norm’s tiny 10-year-old cousin from FL, Hilary! (the sweetest call) Charlie in Reading Joanne Fred from Roslindale That concludes and we hear Norm referencing someone named Chuck from Binghampton, NY and his quest for something to do. Doris may have some answers. Ben Parker in Traffic Norm talking about Radio Drama Cats infected with Satan! I TOLD you this was all over the place! Next a Caller talking about WHDH and Dick Summers Why now we have a Caller reading a poem to Bob Raleigh Hey, why don’t we check in with David Brudnoy? He’s talking Daytime TV Talk Shows that he was/would be and not on regarding his book, “Life is Not a Rehearsal.” Including Oprah where he would be appearing with Greg Louganis who was set to reveal something. A mystery talk show pops in and then back to David who’s now speaking with actor Rufus Sewell and calls from Doug and someone else. Ready for the next jump? It’s Steve Leveille with a guest that wrote some dating guidebook and a caller. Back to Norm with Ruth Clennot on the line. Norm’s commentary on Awards Shows is so spot on! Next caller sounds like Joan from Tewksbury so that’s what I’m going with!  Another caller which was possibly one of our phone booth” calls we would make (man do I wish I had more of those moments). Norm again with Ed Mullen on the line talking about some tune and then Ed intros Jack! Speaking of the Jack of All Traffic… Sprinkled about this radio salad mix are approx 1 million Dramatic sponsor reads from Jack (some with reports): Now don’t quote me on how many times we hear certain sponsors but I’m pretty darn close: John Deere: Fox Run Equipment Inc in North Pembroke x5 Nashua Outdoor Power Equipment Repair x2 146 Supply Ctr in Millbury Dunkin The Delta Connection x7 Riopan Plus 2 Qwai Garlic x2 HP Deskjet Printer Fortune Magazine
To kick of 2026, we will feature a DBG from January 2nd, 1994 which I have titled: The Deli And there are a couple of reasons for that. Italian influences and some ahem, “sharp” commentary later. Players: Denise Ed in Boston Marie from Revere George in Everett John Kelly producing and playing in studio Tony on the phone Aaron Sawyer in Traffic Bdays: Jim Bakker Julius LaRosa Daniel Rostenkowski Monday – 1/3 Mel Gibson Victor Borge Jesse White Dabney Coleman Bobby Hull Ep 269, The Deli, slices its way to your ears in 3, 2 & 1. As we close out 2025, I want to thank our listeners, subscribers and supporters. I’m so very appreciative of all your support. And if you’re wondering, “How can I support this wildly entertaining rebroadcast podcast?” You can join Patreon where I post exclusive content and episode previews and other silliness. Buy Me a Coffee is a great way to do so as well. It’s kind of like a tip jar but I’ve added monthly support categories where, if you choose, you’ll receive a special certificate when you choose an option. I’m tellin’ ya, this is heady stuff! I am trying to save enough to make a decent donation to the Norm Nathan Scholarship Fund at the Berklee College of Music here in Boston. It’s a slow process so if you need a reason to help that’s one of my goals. Links are always in the bio and, on occasion, I even include them here at the end of this opening. We also close out the year with FIVE, count em, FIVE new countries to appear on the World Silliness Meter: Hola, ¿cómo estás? (Hello, how are you?) to Bolivia and Panama, “გამარჯობა” (pronounced gamarjoba) to Georgia, “Salemetsiz be” to Kazakhstan and “Marhaba” to the UAE! I’m just so darn pleased! Soooooo, what do we have today? We have a SMQ from December 28th, 1995, which is titled: Confusion, Consternation and Competition Norm was filling in for Bob Raleigh with Mike Epstein producing The Rules: God help us… Three rounds – we ask, you answer correctly, 2nd round, if wrong, you’re gone / 2nd round, you ask, we get it right, you’re outta here / if we get it wrong you move to the 3rd round where we ask another question, you get it right you win, you don’t and you’re gone. And, for the love of all things holy, have a question ready to ask us All of that to win a Misspelled Certificate of Award with funny jokes. The Panel: Norm Ed Tony (at some point) Jack The Categories: Rock n Roll (by the decade if you like) Big Band/Jazz Musical Comedy And possibly, Classical? Callers: Mike in Norfolk Fred from Medford Brian in Worcester Al from Beverly Barbara in Quincy John from East Boston Paul in MI Ellen from Lynn Bob in Waltham Robert from Medford Andre in Seabrook Larry on the Cape Matt in Haverhill Jeff from Boston Les in Sharon Todd from MD Larry in Brookline Freddy in his car Tom from Dover, NH Peter in Middleton Tom from Boston Fred in Medford Helene from Belmont! John in Hopkinton Rob from Ontario
This here broadcast is filled with stories. Whether from our guest or all the callers. It’s a good one to entertain you as do some last-minute shopping. By the date on the cassette, it’s all from December 23rd, 1995, but there’s some peepers talk later in the show so we may have a splash of Spring,  1996? Even if that’s the case the title shall be: A Merry Ol’ Broadcast The Guest that night was Theresa Rice Engels author of “Just Before Christmas: Children’s Stories to Read Aloud.” Norm couldn’t find the copy of the book but begged for mercy. The guest was delightful and was a great one to have on just before Christmas. She reads a story so you might want to get a hot cocoa or toddy and curl up by your audio broadcast device and enjoy. Callers: We have a few callers where we know the name Janet Gilly Marie Monica Harriet from Quincy Maryann in Danvers Fred from Medford or… John in Somerville David and at least 10+ calls where we don’t Check out the links below for ways to support the show. And if you voted for us in the Podcast Tonight Awards, thank you! Short list announcements are on January 26th so I will update you then whether we made it to the finals. **RE-upload as the first was cut off before it ended.** The Vault has given us another longer form episode so you can listen whilst you do your Christmas shopping, baking and/or wrapping! It’s very possible that some of this may have aired in a previous episode. That occasionally occurs. Sometimes I can catch it and make changes. There are many tapes and some may be copies where dates were transposed incorrectly. Other times they are too good not to hear again. And if this is the case here…what a treat! Before we get into all the details let me remind you of the Podcast Tonight Awards. Voting ends on December 25th. Vote early and often! Drawing from my personal archives of this beloved WBZ-AM talk show, Norm Nathan’s Vault of Silliness resurrects the warm and comforting voice of the Boston broadcasting legend, Uncle Norm himself. This podcast, which is curated by me, his former producer, Tony Nesbitt features a treasure trove of recordings from his time at WBZ. They are presented in their original, unvarnished glory. Listeners are treated to the authentic, analog charm of the broadcasts, complete with the distinctive hiss of tape and the occasional home-edited pause, all serving as a perfect backdrop for Norm's unique blend of news, talk, and music that cemented his status as a cherished voice in New England.
