In Episode 16, we learn what constitutes a taxable benefit for Canadian income tax purposes and the implications for employers, from payroll withholding to reporting requirements. Our experts also explain the obligation to remit GST/HST and QST in relation to certain types of taxable benefits and why many organizations are surprised by it. Potential complications in determining the value of a benefit and calculating any required sales tax remittance, important changes for the current reporting year, and upcoming deadlines are also discussed.
In Episode 14, we discuss the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax credit that is available for Canadian corporate income tax purposes, including the history of the program, eligibility criteria, and what constitutes technological uncertainty. Our guests provide several examples of qualifying projects, as well as sound advice on how taxpayers can maximize the amount of government support received for their research and development work.
In Episode 13, we discuss key government incentives available to encourage hiring, training, and skills development by Canadian organizations, including wage subsidies, grants, and income tax credits. Our guest, Sara Hipson, provides practical advice on monitoring the myriad of incentives available and managing the application process, while highlighting a few of the key programs currently offered to businesses in Canada. The difference between proactive and retroactive funding options, potential restrictions to consider, and the ability to stack various programs offered by different levels of government to optimize an organization’s access to funding are also discussed.
In Episode 12, we discuss significant government funding programs included in the 2022 British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba provincial budgets. With most Canadian governments still dealing with the effects of the ongoing pandemic, several new programs have been announced and many ongoing funding opportunities have been expanded. Our guest, Matt Mongeon, reviews key grants, subsidies, and tax credits being made available to business, including specific programs designed to promote job creation, training, action on climate change, and economic development and diversification throughout Western Canada. We also talk about the importance of monitoring a constantly evolving government funding environment to avoid missed opportunities.
