Description

It's official we are heading into the biggest shit-show in human history. The U.N says there is no ‘credible pathway’ to staying under 1.5C (October 2022). Revolution is now inevitable, a great danger and a great opportunity to create a new revitalised democracy, or allow fascism to drag us all into hell.

Far from it being the end it's just the beginning, there's everything to play for but only if we organise and resist as if our lives depend upon it, because they do.

Roger Hallam has studied and designed social change for 35 years, he has initiated and helped run the biggest climate campaigns of the last decade he knows his stuff. This series details the theory and practice of a completely new way of reimagining and renewing society.

At this moment in time this is the most important podcast series in the world, even if few people get it; that it's now or never for humanity. Roger walks his talk. The first 13 podcasts episodes are recorded from prison.

We're talking about real change here, no more blah blah blah.

In this episode of The Spirit of Revolution, I begin a mini series looking at what revolutionary movements can learn from religious traditions — starting with Catholicism. This is not about belief, conversion, or theology as identity. It is about effectiveness. After Extinction Rebellion took off, journalists often asked me what climate or activist books I’d been reading. The honest answer was: hardly any. What mattered more was learning outside my political silo — including from capitalist strategy, evolutionary theory, and religious traditions that have grappled with power, morality, failure, and endurance for centuries. Here I introduce the idea of exaptation — taking elements from one system and using them in another — and explain why religious traditions are worth studying even (especially) if you are secular. I outline some of the core philosophical and political problems Catholic thinkers like Maurice Blondel and Henri de Lubac were wrestling with: - Action without certainty - The relationship between the material and the transcendent - Power, morality, and who decides - Why neat divisions between public/private or sacred/secular keep breaking down These are not abstract questions. They sit underneath how we organise, how we exercise power, and why movements either sustain themselves or collapse. This episode sets up the problem. In the next episodes, I’ll look more concretely at how Catholicism navigated a historical period very similar to the one we are entering now — and what we might be able to extract and use without reinventing the wheel. This is me thinking out loud, carefully and practically, about how real political change actually happens — based on history, organising in Brixton since I was imprisoned, and a lot of experience inside movements that worked… and some that didn’t. I’m trying to lay out a usable framework for building people power in the conditions we actually face now: climate collapse, democratic breakdown, and the fast rise of authoritarian politics. This doesn't need to be watched in one sitting. In this episode of Spirit of Revolution, Roger continues the journey beyond the Citadel — not to replace one system of power with another, but to refuse a dominant power itself as the organising principle of life and resistance. Recorded from prison, this chapter explores why real liberation does not mean arriving at a new truth, ideology, or belief system. It means staying suspended, open, and in motion — refusing to build another Citadel, whether secular or religious. Roger argues that secularism and religion are not opposites, but two sides of the same coin: instruments of power that limit how we are allowed to see. True freedom begins when we step outside this frame and reclaim the power of imagination, interpretation, and collective meaning. This episode explores: - Why revolution fails when it replaces one power with another - The illusion of objectivity - How imagination defeats material force - The power of powerlessness in public space - Training the mind collectively for acts of resistance - Why culture and consciousness precede political change This is not a private spirituality or a new belief system. It is a public practice — one that reshapes how we organise, resist, and act together. Recorded by Roger Hallam from prison. Footage courtesy of Just Stop Oil and The Guardian. Recorded from prison, this episode explores what Roger Hallam calls the Citadel: the dominant way we are taught to see the world, ourselves, and time — and how that way of seeing silently maintains power. This is not a political argument in the usual sense. It is a metaphysical one. Roger argues that real resistance does not begin with tactics or policies, but with breaking the frames that limit what we believe is possible. When we learn to refuse false choices, to step outside the questions power wants us to answer, the walls of the Citadel begin to crumble. This episode is about: - Power as agenda-setting, not persuasion - Why the deepest form of domination is how we are taught to see - The link between spiritual vision and mass civil resistance - How new ways of seeing create the conditions for social tipping points - Why the metaphysical comes before the political The Spirit of Revolution series explores the inner foundations of nonviolent resistance — the culture, rituals, emotions, and ways of seeing that have animated every successful movement for liberation. This is my first full talk after being released from prison. Here's what I learnt inside, why civil disobedience matters more than ever, and why materialism on its own has failed to move people. I go into the climate science (yes, billions dead), why prison isn’t what you think it is, and why faith and transcendence still hold the key to revolution. Some people hate prison. Some people love it. I’m one of them. In this episode, Roger reflects on the profound role of ritual in life, community, and the fight for justice. From the subtlety of pouring tea in Japan to the unexpected humanity of a lunch break during a civil rights protest, Roger explores how rituals create space for connection, play, and meaning—especially in times of struggle. Ritual shields us from life's raw edges, offering moments of calm and grounding even in the harshest circumstances, like a prison cell. It reminds us that resistance isn’t just about grand gestures but also about the small, sacred acts that bind us together and prepare us for the challenges ahead. Trump’s re-election could feel like the end of hope, but is it really? In this talk, I explore how this moment could be the trigger we need to build a new world—one rooted in love, not power. By shifting our thinking, organising assemblies, and fostering deep connection, we can counter despair and fascism alike. I discuss the foundational human need for love and how it transforms politics, drawing from psychology and practical examples. In this podcast, I explore the deep and often confusing relationship between suffering, resilience, and transformation. We live in a world where the rational, calm approach to life doesn’t seem to be working – in fact, it’s taking us to the edge. So, what happens when we embrace vulnerability instead of avoiding it? How can suffering, something most of us wish to escape, actually become a source of strength? I reflect on the paradox that lies at the heart of the struggle for change: suffering, when confronted with humility and empathy, can lead not only to personal transcendence but to collective power. Whether it’s the resilience found in the aftermath of conflict, or the strength that emerges when we face the suffering of others, there’s more at play than we might realise. This podcast dives into how the very vulnerability we seek to avoid is the key to true revolution, both within ourselves and in the world around us. Join me in unpacking the lessons hidden in pain, and how they can fuel the fire for a transformative change that will carry us into a new world. In this episode, I reflect on the power of emotion in shaping social change. After receiving a five-year sentence, I explore how modern culture is evolving to embrace emotionality, moving beyond the cold rationalism of past centuries. Through the lens of personal experience, feminist thought, and revolutionary activism, I argue that reason and emotion are not opposites but inseparable in decision-making and social confrontation. From courtroom outbursts to the legacy of activist Larry Kramer, I discuss how feelings—not detached logic—drive change and why it’s time to reconsider the role of emotion in our collective movements. This episode is an exploration of what it means to fully engage in the messy, emotional reality of being human, and how that very engagement can be the catalyst for deep cultural transformation. Join me as we break down the false dichotomy between reason and emotion and chart a new path towards a more connected, emotionally aware civilization. There are many ways of seeing—ways of sensing and feeling. It is possible, and a good thing, to transcend yourself, the world around you and even time. To look at all these things from the outside. To "look in," as you might say. This is the key to resilience - the ability to keep going and not burn out. To continue to be in service. This orientation will save the world—or what is left to save. And, excitingly, it is at the core of what could be called the next civilisation. The world will not be saved by a new morality—a wanting to be or do good—but by a new metaphysics, meaning a new way of seeing things and how they interact, how we see ourselves and the world. It means you act for the good, not to create good outcomes, but because it is good. You do it because it is a truthful and beautiful thing to do. After all, it creates what we might call a metaphysical harmony—a balance. Another way of putting this is to say you act in love because this is what consciousness is. You don't go out to "do good." You do good to come home because you are already a being that exists to do good. It is what you already are. You are not going anywhere. How are we going to do this? It's what everyone is thinking at the back of our minds. How is humanity going to handle the next few decades? The challenges are beyond enormous. The essential paradox of our time is that the more we are attached to ourselves and this world—to our self-pity and this world we have to "save"—the more likely we will fail. Human history is full of impossible, head-fuck situations where everything seems lost, and then somehow, people pull through. More than that, in doing so, they create a new way of seeing and being—a new civilisation. It depends on one word: "spirit." Something all the elites and their allies, the defeatists in our ranks, cannot see or will not see. It is our secret weapon, the source of endless power. With it, we can take down empires while realising it's just another day. What is this spirit? How does it work? This podcast aims to take you and our movements in the right direction—to the revolution. The spirit of revolution. Visit RogerHallam.com for full transcripts, action pathways and to donate. I should have been found not guilty in this climate trial. Civil resistance is being crimininalised and climate denial fascists are beginning to take over our courts. I couldn't use any climate science in defence or even the right of necessity. Instead I had to rely on the conscience of my jurors. Here's my speech to them from the dock, recorded afterwards on the prison telephone line. Let's face it – revolution isn't all sunshine and rainbows. We've got to grapple with the highs of optimism and the lows of historical disappointments. That's the game we're playing. Some even claim that personal transformation is a prerequisite for effective activism. And yeah, there's some truth to that. We've seen how communal living can either foster selflessness but it can also descend into chaos. The key is how we feel about our activism. It's rooted in our materialist worldview, in our failure to transcend beyond the tangible. So let's shake things up. Let's shift our perspective and embrace a new approach that integrates transcendence, ritual, and the management of suffering. In this episode, I'm calling out the tendency among political activists (myself included) to narrow our focus solely on politics, overlooking the broader dimensions of human existence. Let's face it: the world is far more complex than just politics. I'm here to challenge the notion of utopian societies and shed light on the multifaceted nature of alienation—political, social, and existential. From the shackles of bureaucracy to the challenges of modern mass society, we're dissecting the root causes of alienation in our world today. But fear not, because I'm not just here to point out the problems. I'm offering holistic solutions, advocating for balance, humility, and a fresh ideological framework fit for the 21st century. It's time to tackle alienation head-on, with principles like equality, good governance, and a reevaluation of our values in the age of postmodernism.
