Let's Talk Greek

In this episode we look at compound words with the word -φοβία (-phobia) as their second component. The word φοβία comes from φόβος, which means fear. So, all the words we’ll see today describe having a fear of something, and that “something” is defined by the first part of each word.The first word we’ll look at is υψοφοβία, from the words ύψος meaning height and φοβία. So, υψοφοβία means the fear of heights.In English, we use the word acrophobia, which also exists in Greek as ακροφοβία.Next, we have αγοραφοβία, from the words αγορά, which in this case means public space and not market, and φοβία. Just like in English, agoraphobia, it refers to the fear of open or crowded places.Then we have κλειστοφοβία, from κλειστός, meaning closed, and φοβία, which means the fear of confined or enclosed spaces. The English word is claustrophobia, where the first component comes from the Latin claustrum and the Greek φοβία.Our next word is αρρωστοφοβία, from άρρωστος, meaning sick, and φοβία. This describes the fear of getting sick.In English, the equivalent term is nosophobia, from νόσος, the ancient Greek word for illness or disease, and phobia. Although this term exists in English, it’s mostly used in medical contexts. In this episode we're taking everyday professions and breaking the Greek words apart to see where they come from and what they literally mean. Because in Greek, words aren’t random.They’re built with intention, logic, and history.Nurse = νοσοκόμα. The Greek word νοσοκόμα comes from two parts: νόσος = disease, illness and κομέω / κομώ = to take care of, to tend. So νοσοκόμα literally means:👉 “the person who takes care of illness.” The word itself emphasizes care, not just medical tasks. Ophthalmologist = οφθαλμίατρος. This word becomes very clear once you break it down: οφθαλμός = eye and ιατρός = doctor. So οφθαλμίατρος literally means:👉 “doctor of the eye.” That’s why so many medical terms around the world are built directly from Greek roots.Gynecologist = γυναικολόγος. Let’s break this one apart: γυνή / γυναίκα = woman and λόγος = study, science, discourse. So γυναικολόγος means:👉 “someone who studies and specializes in the woman’s body.” Here, λόγος doesn’t just mean “word.” It means systematic study.Dentist = οδοντίατρος. οδούς / οδόντος = tooth and ιατρός = doctor. And οδοντίατρος is literally:👉 “the doctor of the teeth.”. That’s also why we have words like ορθοδοντική and οδοντολογία.Psychologist = ψυχολόγος. One of the most meaningful examples: ψυχή = soul, mind, inner life and λόγος = studySo ψυχολόγος literally means:👉 “someone who studies the soul.” The Greek word reaches beyond “mental health” and into the inner world of a person.What I love about Greek is that the words explain themselves once you know how to break them down. Πόσες μελιτζάνες θέλετε; / Yes, I have plenty of fresh ones. How many eggplants would you like?D: Τέσσερις μελιτζάνες παρακαλώ. Πόσο κάνουν οι ντομάτες; Είναι ακριβές; / Four eggplants, please. In today's episode we will talk about the 1st of May in Greece. Emily will first engage in a conversation with Danae, about May 1st and then will explain the significance of this day for Greece.E:Δανάη, να σε ρωτήσω. Η Πρωτομαγιά είναι πράγματι μια ιδιαίτερη μέρα για την Ελλάδα; /Danae, can I ask you something? Is May Day really a special day in Greece?D:Σωστά! Η 1η Μαΐου ή Πρωτομαγιά, έχει διπλή σημασία στην Ελλάδα. Είναι η γιορτή της άνοιξης αλλά και ημέρα αφιερωμένη στα δικαιώματα των εργατών. /That’s right! May 1st, or “Protomagia,” has a double meaning in Greece. It’s a celebration of spring, but also a day dedicated to workers' rights.E:Ας ξεκινήσουμε με τον παραδοσιακό εορτασμό. Τι κάνετε συνήθως εκείνη την ημέρα; /Let’s start with the traditional celebration. What do you usually do on that day?D:Συνήθως πηγαίνουμε εκδρομές στην εξοχή ή στη θάλασσα με οικογένεια και φίλους. Κάνουμε πικνίκ ή πηγαίνουμε σε κάποια ταβέρνα για φαγητό. /We usually go on trips to the countryside or to the sea with family and friends. We have picnics or go to a taverna for food.E:Πολύ ωραίο ακούγεται! Και έχω ακούσει κάτι για λουλουδένια στεφάνια; /That sounds lovely! And I’ve heard something about flower wreaths?D:Ναι! Ένα από τα πιο γνωστά έθιμα είναι να φτιάχνουμε στεφάνια από λουλούδια και αρωματικά φυτά. Αυτά τα στεφάνια τα κρεμάμε στις πόρτες των σπιτιών για καλή τύχη και συμβολίζουν τον ερχομό της άνοιξης. /Yes! One of the most well-known customs is making wreaths out of flowers and aromatic plants. We hang these wreaths on the doors of our houses for good luck, and they symbolize the arrival of spring.E:Μου θυμίζει αρχαίες ελληνικές παραδόσεις! /It reminds me of ancient Greek traditions!D:Πολύ σωστά! Η Πρωτομαγιά έχει ρίζες στην αρχαιότητα, όταν οι άνθρωποι λάτρευαν τη φύση και γιόρταζαν τη ζωή και την άνοιξη. /Exactly! May Day has roots in antiquity, when people worshipped nature and celebrated life and spring.E:Κατάλαβα. Και σχετικά με τα δικαιώματα των εργατών που είπες πριν; /I see. And what about the workers’ rights you mentioned earlier?D:Η 1η Μαΐου, όπως και σε πολλές άλλες χώρες, είναι επίσης γνωστή και ως Εργατική Πρωτομαγιά και είναι μέρα που χρησιμοποιείται για να τιμήσουμε τα δικαιώματα των εργαζομένων. /May 1st, like in many other countries, is also known as Labor Day and is a day used to honor workers’ rights.E:Άρα γίνονται και διαδηλώσεις ή πορείες για εκείνη την ημέρα; /So are there also protests or marches on that day?D:Ναι, κυρίως σε μεγάλες πόλεις όπως είναι η Αθήνα και η Θεσσαλονίκη. Εκεί γίνονται συγκεντρώσεις για τα εργασιακά δικαιώματα τιμώντας τους αγώνες των εργαζομένων. /Yes, especially in big cities like Athens and Thessaloniki. There are rallies for labor rights to honor workers’ struggles.E:Και πότε έγινε η πρώτη εργατική απεργία στην Ελλάδα; /And when was the first labor strike in Greece?D:Η πρώτη έγινε το 1893, και από τότε, η Πρωτομαγιά είναι σημαντική για το εργατικό κίνημα. /The first one was in 1893, and since then, May Day has been important for the labor movement.E:Μου φαίνεται πολύ ενδιαφέρον το πώς η Πρωτομαγιά συνδυάζει τη γιορτή της φύσης με τους εργατικούς αγώνες. /I find it really interesting how May Day combines the celebration of nature with labor struggles.D:Ακριβώς! Και ο καθένας βρίσκει τον δικό του τρόπο να τη γιορτάσει. /Exactly! In today's episode you will learn different phrases about the weather in Greek. Emily and Danae will first engage in a conversation talking about a day trip and then explain some expressions and vocabulary we use in Greek, when talking about the weather.E: Επιτέλους ήρθε η άνοιξη και ανοίγει ο καιρός! /  Spring is finally here, and the weather is warming up!D: Ναι! Τις τελευταίες μέρες έχει πάρα πολύ ήλιο και κάνει πολλή ζέστη! / Yes! These past few days have been really sunny and very warm!E: Καιρός ήταν! Τι λες, πάμε καμία εκδρομή την Κυριακή; / It was about time! What do you think, shall we go on a trip on Sunday?D: Κυριακή από ό,τι είδα ίσως βρέξει. Πάμε μήπως το Σάββατο; / From what I saw, it might rain on Sunday. Should we go on Saturday instead?E: Ναι, πάμε το Σάββατο. Σκεφτόμουν μήπως πηγαίναμε προς τον Πλαταμώνα. Να κάνουμε μια βόλτα στη θάλασσα και να φάμε σε μια ωραία ταβέρνα που ξέρω. / Yes, let's go on Saturday. I was thinking we could go to Platamonas, take a walk by the sea, and eat at a nice taverna I know.D: Τέλεια ιδέα! Για δες, πόσους βαθμούς θα έχει το Σάββατο; / Great idea! Check the temperature for Saturday.E: Λέει ότι η θερμοκρασία θα φτάσει μέχρι τους 22 βαθμούς Κελσίου. / It says the temperature will reach up to 22 degrees Celsius.D: Σχεδόν καλοκαίρι! / Almost summer!E: Βέβαια, το απογευματάκι που θα πέσει ο ήλιος θα βγάλει λίγο αέρα και θα κάνει ψύχρα. Οπότε ας έχουμε μαζί μας ένα ελαφρύ μπουφάν. / Of course, in the afternoon, when the sun goes down, it will get a bit windy and chilly. So let's bring a light jacket.D: Έχεις δίκιο. Θα πέσει πολύ η θερμοκρασία το βράδυ. / You're right. The temperature will drop a lot at night.E: Θα πέσει μέχρι και τους 11 βαθμούς Κελσίου. / It will go down to 11 degrees Celsius.D: Οπότε οπωσδήποτε μπουφανάκι! Μήπως να πάρουμε και καμιά ομπρέλα μην βρέξει ξαφνικά; / So definitely a jacket! Should we also bring an umbrella in case it suddenly rains?E: Η πρόγνωση δεν λέει κάτι για βροχή, δίνει μόνο συννεφιά, αλλά ας έχουμε μία ομπρέλα καλού κακού. / The forecast doesn't mention rain, only clouds, but let's take an umbrella just in case.D: Πάντως η ξαδέρφη μου που μένει εκεί μου είπε ότι το βράδυ κάνει κρύο γιατί έχει υγρασία. / By the way, my cousin who lives there told me that it gets cold at night because of the humidity.E: Σωστά! Αλλά εμείς θα φύγουμε γύρω στις 7 με 8 το απόγευμα. / That's true! But we'll be leaving around 7 or 8 in the evening.D: Καλά λες! Κατά τις 10 το πρωί είναι καλά να ξεκινήσουμε; / Good point! Is 10 a.m. a good time to leave?E: Μπορούμε να ξεκινήσουμε και λίγο πιο αργά, αφού έτσι κι αλλιώς έχει μεγαλώσει η μέρα και θα προλάβουμε πολύ ήλιο. / We can leave a bit later since the days are longer now, and we'll still get plenty of sunshine.D: Ωραία! Ας βρεθούμε γύρω στις 11. / Great! Let's meet around 11.E: Ναι, 11 είναι τέλεια! Τα λέμε το Σάββατο! / Yes, 11 is perfect! However, a few years ago, I moved to the U.S., to New York. How long have you been living in Chicago?D: Μένω στο Σικάγο 4 χρόνια. Εσύ από πότε είσαι στη Νέα Υόρκη; / I’ve been living in Chicago for four years. How long have you been in New York?E: Είμαι από το 2018. Τι σου αρέσει πιο πολύ στη διδασκαλία των ελληνικών ως ξένη γλώσσα; / Since 2018. What do you like most about teaching Greek as a foreign language?D: Μου αρέσει που προσφέρω και μοιράζομαι τις γνώσεις μου για τη γλώσσα με ανθρώπους που θέλουν να μάθουν. / I love that I can share my knowledge of the language with people who want to learn.E: Συμφωνώ μαζί σου εκατό τοις εκατό. Αυτό μου αρέσει κι εμένα στο επάγγελμά μας, ότι βοηθάμε άλλους ανθρώπους να ανακαλύπτουν τον κόσμο, ό,τι επίπεδο και να έχουν στα ελληνικά. Αλλά βοηθάμε και άλλους να έρθουν σε επαφή με τις ρίζες και την οικογένειά τους. / I agree with you a hundred percent! That’s what I love about our profession too—that we help people discover the world, no matter their level in Greek. We also help others connect with their roots and family.D: Έτσι είναι! In today's episode you will learn various words that sound the same but have a different a meaning and spelling in Greek! Emily and Danae will first engage in a conversation talking about a small accident at a walk to the park and will analyse the spelling and meaning of these words. E: Καλά! Δεν θα πιστέψεις τι έγινε το Σάββατο. / Well! You won’t believe what happened on Saturday. D: Τι έγινε; / What happened? E: Πήγα την ανιψιά μου στις κούνιες και μου βγήκε πάλι ο ώμος. / I took my niece to the swings and my shoulder popped out again. D: Πώς έγινε αυτό; / How did that happen? E: Ούτε που κατάλαβα! Την έκανα κούνια και σε μια στιγμή ίσως έβαλα περισσότερη δύναμη και βγήκε ο ώμος μου. / I didn’t even realize! I was pushing her on the swing, and at one point, maybe I applied too much force and my shoulder dislocated.  D: Πόνεσε πολύ; / Did it hurt a lot? E: Ό,τι και να πω είναι λίγο! / Whatever I say is an understatement! D: Το φαντάζομαι. Η ανιψιά σου τι έκανε; / I can imagine. What did your niece do? E: Τρόμαξε η καημένη! Προσπάθησε να με βοηθήσει, μου έλεγε: “έλα θεία, σήκω σήκω!” και ότι θα μου φτιάξει φρουτοσαλάτα με καρπούζι, σύκο και πεπόνι για να με παρηγορήσει! / The poor thing got scared! She tried to help me, saying, “Come on aunt, get up, get up!” and that she would make me a fruit salad with watermelon, fig, and melon to cheer me up! D: Μα τι γλυκό παιδί! Τελικά πώς σηκώθηκες; / What a sweet kid! How did you finally get up?  E: Ευτυχώς, ήταν και ο αδερφός μου μαζί, που είναι δύο μέτρα και με βοήθησε. / Luckily, my brother was there, he's two meters tall, and he helped me. D: Τώρα όμως πονάς; / Are you still in pain now?  E: Πέρασε ο πολύς ο πόνος αλλά θα το κρατήσω δεμένο για μία εβδομάδα ακόμα. / The worst of the pain is gone, but I’ll keep it wrapped for another week. E: Όχι, προσέχω τι τρώω, αλλά θέλω να κάνω ολοκληρωμένα γεύματα και όχι σκόρπια μέσα στη μέρα. / Not exactly, I’m just being more careful about what I eat. I want to have proper meals instead of eating random things throughout the day. D: Κατάλαβα, έτσι θα έχεις και περισσότερη ενέργεια κατά τη διάρκεια της μέρας. / Got it, that way you’ll have more energy during the day. E: Ακριβώς! Εσύ σκέφτηκες τίποτα; / Exactly! What about you, have you thought of anything? D: Μετά από αυτό που είπες, νομίζω ότι ο πρώτος μου στόχος για την καινούρια χρονιά είναι να αλλάξω το ωράριο του ύπνου μου. / After hearing that, I think my first goal for this year is to change my sleep schedule. E: Δηλαδή; / What do you mean? D: Δηλαδή, να κοιμάμαι νωρίτερα το βράδυ και να μην κάθομαι να δουλεύω μέχρι αργά. Να κάνω τις δουλειές μου από νωρίς το πρωί για να έχω χρόνο να ξεκουράζομαι σωστά. / I mean, I want to go to bed earlier and not stay up working until late. I plan to get my tasks done early in the morning so I have time to rest properly. E: Πολύ καλό μου ακούγεται αυτό! Και υγιές για το σώμα σου! Ο δικός σου στόχος, μου θυμίζει και έναν δικό μου. / That sounds great! And healthy for your body! Your goal actually reminds me of one of mine. D: Ενδιαφέρον, για πες! / Interesting, tell me! E: Εεε να μωρέ άργησε να με πάρει ο ύπνος. / Well, it took me a while to fall asleep. D: Ωχ, κρίμα ρε συ. Ίσως μπορούμε να δοκιμάσουμε μερικές αναπνοές χαλάρωσης απόψε. / Oh, that's a shame. Maybe we can try some relaxation breathing tonight. Ε: Ακούγεται καλή ιδέα. / Sounds like a good idea. D: Τι σχέδια έχουμε για σήμερα; / What plans do we have for today? Once it's melted, add an equal amount of flour. D: Κατάλαβα. Για πόση ώρα πρέπει να το μαγειρέψω αυτό; / I see. How long should I cook this for? Ε: Για περίπου 2-3 λεπτά, ανακατεύοντας συνεχώς μέχρι να πάρει ένα χρυσαφένιο χρώμα. Στη συνέχεια, αργά προσθεσε ζεστό γάλα, περίπου 2 φλιτζάνια, για να αποφύγεις τους σβολους. / For about 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly until it turns golden brown. Then slowly add warm milk, about 2 cups, to avoid lumps. D: Πρέπει το γάλα να είναι ζεστό; / Should the milk be warm? E: Ναι. Αφού προσθέσεις όλο το γάλα, συνέχισε το ανακάτεμα μέχρι να πυκνώσει η σάλτσα. Συνήθως παίρνει περίπου 5-7 λεπτά. / Yes. After you've added all the milk, continue stirring until the sauce thickens. Like I said it started raining and I said: “I have to get the car so I don’t get wet” and I got … the car and… D: Το αυτοκίνητο ΜΟΥ; Πήρες το αυτοκίνητό μου; / MY CAR? Did you take my car? E: Εεε εγώ δεν έχω όπως ξέρεις. / emm I don’t have one as you know!  D: Γιώργο! Τι έγινε; Τι έκανες; Χτύπησες κανέναν άνθρωπο; Έπαθες κάτι εσύ; / George! What happened? What did you do? Did you hit anyone? Did anything happen to you?  E: Εντάξει είμαι… ένα μικρό ατύχημα είχα. Γλίστρησε το αυτοκίνητο και έπεσε πάνω σε μία στάση λεωφορείου αλλά ευτυχώς δεν υπήρχαν άνθρωποι και… ήρθε η τροχαία και δεν είχα δίπλωμα και τώρα είμαι εδώ.. / I am ok…I had a small accident.. The car slipped and it hit a bus station but thankfully nobody was there and… the traffic police came and I didn’t have my license and now I am here..   D: Γιώργο, ένα λεπτό. Το αυτοκίνητο που είναι; / George! One second. Where is the car now? E: Στην στάση… ή μάλλον μέσα στη στάση! / at the bus station…or better inside the bus station!   D: Έρχομαι. Περίμενε με. Και.. D: Πώς ήταν η βάφτιση του Αχιλλέα; / How was Achilleas’ baptism? E: Αχ, πάρα πολύ ωραία! Περάσαμε τέλεια! / Ah it was amazing! We had a lot of fun. D: Στολίσατε την εκκλησία και την κολυμπήθρα; / Did you decorate the church and the baptistery? E: Δεν στολίσαμε την εκκλησία, ούτε την κολυμπήθρα γιατί δεν μας άφησαν. Στολίσαμε όμως το εξοχικό μας που έγινε το πάρτυ μετά την βάφτιση. / No we didn’t decorate the church, neither the baptistery because they didn’t let us. We decorated our beach house though where we had the party after the baptism. D: Ο Αχιλλέας πώς ήτανε; Έκλαψε καθόλου; / How was Achilleas? Did he cry at all? E: Άσε, έκανε πολλή ζέστη και ήταν γκρινιάρης. Όταν βγάλαμε τα ρούχα και οι νονές βάλανε το λάδι ήταν ήρεμος. Αλλά μόλις ο παπάς τον έβαλε στο νερό άρχισε να κλαίει πολύ. Μετά του έκοψε τα μαλλιά και φόρεσε τα βαφτιστικά του. Του έδωσα και ένα μπισκοτάκι και ηρέμισε. / It was extremely hot and he was fussy. When we took his clothes off and his godmathers put the oil on him, he was calm. But when the priest put him in the water he started crying a lot. After that we gave him a cookie and he was calm.  D: Αχ ψυχή μου! Πως περάσατε στο πάρτυ; / Aww my heart! How was the party? E: Περάσαμε αξέχαστα. Είχαμε μπομπονιέρες και σαμπάνια στην είσοδο για τους καλεσμένους. Είχαμε πολύ φαγητό, σουβλάκια, μπριζόλες, κοτόπουλο ψητό, σαλάτες και πατάτες. / We had a great time. We had the baptism favors and some campaign in the entrance for our friends. We had a lot of food, souvlakia, steak, chichen, salads and potatoes. D: Πω πω ακούγονται νόστιμα. / Po po they sound delicious.  E: Ήταν όλα πεντανόστιμα. Είχαμε και δύο φωτογράφους και βγάλαμε πολλές φωτογραφίες. Ο Αχιλλέας όμως ήταν πολύ κουρασμένος και πήγε για ύπνο νωρίς. Μετά εμείς ξεκινήσαμε τον χορό και τα κοκτέιλ. / Everything was delicious. We had two photographers and we took a lot of pictures. But Achilleas was very tired and he went to bed early. After that we started dancing and drinking cocktails.  D: Φαντάζομαι και πολύ καλά κάνατε. Ο μικρός είμαι σίγουρη ότι ήταν πολύ κουρασμένος. Τώρα θα αρχίσω να ετοιμάζω και εγώ την βάφτιση της μικρής μας. / I can imagine and you did the right thing. I am sure that the little one was very tired.
