A storytelling podcast, with first-hand amazing stories presented by Scott Johnson and Meredith Hackwith Edwards. Sometimes, technology can almost seem like magic. That’s how I
think sometimes about cell phones.
I
mean, you can just pull a little device out of your pocket, tap a
couple of things on the screen, and suddenly you’re talking in real
time to some other person, who can be anywhere in the world? I know
we take this for granted now, but it’s pretty amazing.
There
was a little trick I used to do sometimes, with Skype. Remember
Skype? Back in the day, it was pretty cool to be able to use your
computer to actually make a phone call. Of course, now we do it all
the time with Google Voice. But Skype used to be pretty cutting edge.
Anyway,
one of the features of having a Skype account was 3-way calling. You
could have a 3-way conversation really easily.
So
what I would do is pull up the Skype app on my computer, and have my
list of contacts on the screen. I would click on my dad’s name, so
it would start dialing his phone number. Then I would click my
brother’s name, and it would start dialing HIS phone number. They
would both answer the phone, like “Hello?” and I would just stay
silent and enjoy the confusion. They each knew their phone rang, and
of course they recognized each other’s voices, but neither of them
had made the call so they had no idea why their phones rang. It was
always good for a laugh.
But
sometimes, a phone call can be traumatic.
My
guest today is Adam. He was enjoying some solo rock-climbing one day,
and was on the phone with his roommate, Rachel. That phone call
became one that neither of them will ever forget.

If you’re in the Austin, Texas area – let’s meet up. I’ll be
in Austin the second week of March – and this is 2026, for you
listeners of the future – we’ll have another in-person Listener
Meetup on March 11. This is where you can come and hang out with me
and other podcast listeners, have a drink, ask a question, whatever.
I’d love to get to know you! All of the details can be found in the
What Was That Like Facebook group, at WhatWasThatLike.com/facebook.
And
now, on with today’s episode, which needs a content warning for
discussion of suicide.
Here
in the US, 1 out of every 3 women have experienced some form of
physical violence by an intimate partner. My guest in this episode is
Alyssa. She WAS that 1 out of 3.
This
is a Flashback episode. Alyssa told this story on the podcast way
back in episode 16, more than 7 years ago. Unfortunately, as
sometimes happens, I was not able to get in touch with her recently
for an update.
Alyssa
lives in Tennessee and she’s really into music. She’s a musician,
a songwriter, and an audio engineer. Her boyfriend, Jared, was
abusive to her - emotionally and physically – and police were
actively planning to arrest him. But before that could happen, Jared
decided he would take his own life. And he wanted to do it in a way
that would be disturbing and traumatic for anyone nearby.

As parents, you want your child to be healthy and happy. And you’ll
do anything to make that happen.
But
that’s not always easy when your child is autistic.
Science
and medicine has learned a lot about autism, but there’s still a
lot of mystery around it as well. What causes it (if anything), how
to treat it… there are lots of questions that are still unanswered.
And a successful treatment protocol for one person might not work as
well for another one.
My
guest today is Sarah. She and her husband, Brian, have a son named
Devon, who has severe autism. Devon would have sudden behavior
incidents that often turned violent, and he could hurt himself, or
his parents, or his siblings. Of course, as his mother, Sarah wanted
desperately to help him. But it got to the point where she didn’t
know what to do.
Then
she found out about a hospital that could possibly help Devon. After
years of frustration and exhaustion, there was maybe some hope. And
with an adjustment in medication, she saw some progress with Devon.
What
horrified her was finding out what was actually happening at that
hospital.

Here
on the podcast we’ve several episodes with guests who have told the
story of being attacked by an animal.
These
include a grizzly bear, a monkey, a shark, a rattlesnake, a tiger, a
pair of dogs, an alligator, and a swarm of yellow jackets. But we
haven’t yet had a story about a hippo attack.
Until
today.
My
guest today is Honor. She was traveling throughout Africa and she
learned about the list of animals in Africa that cause the most
fatalities. Hippos are number TWO on that list, and number one may
surprise you. She told me what it was in our conversation.
Hippos
look like they would just want to roll over and scratch their belly.
But don’t be fooled. They are extremely territorial, and can get
very angry. And, as Honor saw first-hand, they are also quite fast.

Sometimes,
there comes a moment in your life when everything changes.
You
might have a little warning ahead of time, or it might come as a
complete surprise. It might be a surprise that makes your whole life
better, or it could be news that’s devastating. We never know –
that’s just how life works.
Justin
had a moment like that. He was adopted the day after he was born, so
he never knew his birth mother. He had a wonderful childhood, and he
loves his family, but he always wondered about the woman who actually
gave birth to him.
Then,
that moment came – they found each other.
Justin
told this story on the podcast more than 7 years ago. And one of the
things that I love about this episode is a surprise I had for him
during our conversation. You’ll hear it right after the second ad
break. I hope you love this story as much as I do.

I
wonder if this ever happens to you.
Maybe
you’re visiting someone and you’re staying overnight. Or you’re
on a trip and you’re staying in a hotel or an Airbnb. And that
first time you wake up, you have a brief few seconds where you’re a
little disoriented. Like, “Hey, where am I? This is not my bedroom.
This is not my bed”. But then it comes back to you – oh yeah, I’m
away from home right now.
I
would think it would be even worse if you woke up and realized you’re
in a hospital bed.
For
the podcast, I typically don’t do stories that are mainly centered
around the guest being in a coma. It’s an interesting concept for
sure, but just the fact that someone was in a coma would make for a
difficult episode. I mean, how can you tell a detailed story when you
were asleep for most of it?
Today
we’re going to hear from Scott. He was in a coma for a while. And
then he had that experience of trying to figure out “why am I in a
hospital...what is going on”. But his story is not really about him
being in a coma.
It’s
about what the doctor told him when he woke up.

Have you ever had a feeling of impending doom? Like you just knew
something bad was about to happen?
Quite
a few years ago, I was in New York City. I went with a friend to a
late comedy show, and when it was over we got on the subway to get
back to the hotel. This was pretty late, like 2 am or maybe even
later. We were on the train, waiting for the doors to close.
Personally, I was feeling fine. But my friend, Teri, was more aware
of our surroundings. There were a few other people on the train and
she did not feel comfortable at all. She said that we needed to get
off the train before the doors closed. So we did.
I
didn’t get it at the time. But Teri just had this bad feeling that
something was about to happen and it was not going to turn out well
for us. But whatever it was, we took a taxi instead and got back
safely.
My
guest today is Jessica. She is an avid rock climber out in the
Pacific Northwest. She was involved in setting up a climbing event
for hundreds of people, and she just kept having this feeling that
something was very wrong. And she was right.

Not
everyone likes surprises.
Personally,
I love being surprised – as long as it’s a GOOD surprise. And
even more than that, I love surprising people and just seeing their
reaction.
About
3-4 years ago, I got what I think is the biggest surprise of my life.
At that time, my dad had been gone for about 6 or 7 years. And one
night my mom invited all the family over for a game night at her
place. This happens all the time, so nothing unusual. But while we
were all there, she made an announcement that, at age 80, she was
going to get married again. I never saw it coming. But it has worked
out great. Jim and my dad were actually best friends for most of
their lives. Jim’s wife had passed away a few years earlier, so…
it really all made sense. And it made for a crazy and wonderful
surprise for all of us.
Today
you’ll hear about a surprise that Victoria got one day, from a
former neighbor. It was about her dad, and it was not a good
surprise.
Victoria
told this story on the podcast about 4 years ago, and after our
conversation you’ll hear an update on what has happened with her
family – and her dad – since then.
This
episode contains discussion of child sexual assault. Listener
discretion is advised.

Well
here we are at the end of 2025. It’s been a crazy year in a lot of
different ways.
And
it’s a tradition here for the What Was That Like podcast for the
last episode of the year to be a collection of all of this year’s
Listener Stories.
For
every main episode of the podcast, we end it with a story sent in by
a listener. It can be something happy, sad, funny – just about
anything – as long as it’s something interesting that happened to
you. We limit these to around 5-10 minutes, and all you have to do is
record it on your phone and email it to me at
Scott@WhatWasThatLike.com
So
what we have here in this final episode of 2025 is over 3 hours of
those listener stories from this past year. Keep in mind that some of
these stories deal with sensitive topics such as suicide or other
things that could be triggering for some listeners. Feel free to fast
forward to the next story if you need to.
And
now, here are the Listener Stories of 2025.

Mountain climbing is safer when you do it with a climbing partner.
If
you want to see something really crazy, something that might even
bring up some anxiety as you watch it, check out the documentary
called Free Solo. This is a National Geographic documentary about a
young rock climber named Alex Honnold. His dream was to climb this
3000 foot rock called El Capitan, in Yosemite National Park.
Just
climbing it is a great achievement for most rock climbers. But Alex
Honnold is not like most rock climbers. He wanted to do it without
any ropes, and without any safety equipment. That’s what “free
solo” climbing is. Alex planned and trained extensively for it. And
he was successful.
My
guest today is Dan. Dan loves to climb. One day he was out with his
friend and long-time climbing partner, Jim. It was a beautiful day
and they were having a great time.
That
was the day that Dan learned that when you’re on the mountain,
having a partner there with you can mean the difference between life
and death.
If
you’d like to contact Dan, all of his contact details are at his

Please please ask him to make a dog entertainment app android, Netflix or Amazon so that my baby dog has some entertainment other than some of the other enriching things I give him to do during the day
When I think of motivational speaking, I think of my very favorite movie Little Miss Sunshine.
thank you for sharing this horrifying story of injustice. my heart goes out to Steven and his family for his suffering. Would love to have these types of stories shared in the off weeks. thanks for all you do!

I might unsubscribe because of that obnoxious noise at the start...so unnecessary!!! it really hurt my ears since I had in my earpods.

In case anyone has trouble finding the podcast, make sure you search for "Proof: a true crime podcast." there are several podcasts named "proof" that aren't this. (one is about test kitchens 🤣)
Hospice people are such an incredible blessing to have. Seriously, they are angels for the family and patients. It’s hard work and only certain people can deal with it obviously. I respect any hospice nurse or worker, they help so much more than they’ll ever know.
I don’t know who I was more frustrated with, the neighbor that should be charged with obstruction of justice, or the dispatcher on the phone with the 11 year old boy that needs to reevaluate her ability to provide compassion.
Luke comes across as slightly arrogant.. Well educated boy, who thinks he's superior and what he done is 'ok' because of the reason he done it. Sounds like he would cross most people to get what he wants. No an ounce of remorse or acknowledgement of his stupidity..
