Description

Welcome to this fortnightly podcast hosted by Ben Rose, Ian Green and Anthon Ogundimu, three former university roommates - reviewing movies like you've never heard before.

This trio of student-loan, debt-ridden 30-somethings pledge to re-watch and re-evaluate the movies they once viewed together (usually over a Pot Noodle) during their student days. Follow them, as they discover whether their once treasured flicks still hold up against the standards of cynical life-experience and evolving tastes.

Each episode, they travel BACK TO THE PICTURES, screening a movie first viewed during 2005-2009. Moreover, each week the audience are serenaded with film trivia, plot breakdowns and excruciating knit-picking guided by impossible standards. Discussions are glued together with fond memories, private jokes and aimless banter.

From Ian's shoutouts to classic film characters such as 'Sausage Charlie' to his shrewd observation of supermarket trolly quantum mechanics, to Anthon's nigh eidetic attention to detail and Ben's nihilistic approach to filmic discourse, this podcast is a shout-out to the duped generation - Viva La Higher Education Act 2004!

Rarely does a movie come along that encapsulates the BTTP's 30-somethings sensibilities. Here, this episode, Ben, Ian and Anthon are faced with the ultimate franchise from their childhood and beyond. What do they make of the bodacious, tubular and spectacular looking animatronic Ninja (sorry, Hero) Turtles from the 1990 independent Comic Book-Superhero-action movie that would have defined their movie-watching habits in the early 90s. And what on earth do they make of a horrific, unprecedented crime spree of teenagers (with head stockings) stealing TV's from OAP's? This shit is dark. And this time round, can even Master Splinters sage advice and wisdom stop this once beloved childhood classic from falling down against the times? Cowabunga!
It's a long walk, the Green Mile. Yes, it is. But in a change of pace from recent outings, this go around sees the BTTP lot inducted into a story of compelling narratives, profound themes and complex characters - not to mention a balls-to-the-wall performance by the late MCD! This is all true. But, fuck, this movie is long! This episode, Ben, Ian and Anthon refrain from throwing too much shade at this flick, because as we soon learn, some people are afraid of the dark.

You want to remember something a certain way, but that memory can only preserve as long as you do not revisit it. In 2025, the BTTP fellas are at it again - rewatching a long-time favourite Vampire-Superhero-Action-Horror flick, Blade (1998). It's going to be a tough one. This episode, Anthon, Ian and Ben prepare to enter the Temple of Eternal Night and attempt to figure out the art of applying sun cream to stop yourself bursting into flames, assaulting uniformed police officers in broad daylight (with swords strapped to ones back) with no repercussions. Along the way, they are tested by the nebulous bromance between Frost and La Magra, the wildly tacked on inclusion of Oedipus themes and more! The answers may upset long term fans of the Day Walker! You have been warned.
A short time ago, in a recording studio far far overpriced...Join Ian, Anthon and Ben once again for more side-splitting, knit-picking, bollocks-calling shenanigans as the boys from P2, Oxford Court recall some of their bestest and some of their lamest movie adventures. And why not start with the movie that divided a generation. Actually, at the time, there wasn't much of a division - it was panned. But nowadays, the kids of, well round about the BTTP crews age, have reevaluated the first prequel in George Lucas's seminal space-opera series. And this one is a doozy. Trust the force and download the 2nd and final part of their Star Wars Ep 1 review!
What is the story here? The planet Naboo is under an attack...Why? It's political. How? It's macro economics.Who? Essentially, Amazon in SpaceWhen? A long, long time agoWhere? a Galaxy Far, Far AwayAnd that is how we kick of Season 4 of Back to the Pictures? Unfortunately, still no one can be told what this Back to the Pictures review on 1999's the Matrix is. You still have to hear it for yourself.

In the penultimate review of Season 3, our trusted trio delight in disagreement as a relic of Ben's film student days rears its beautiful or ugly head, depending on who you ask! Sofia Coppola's understated, cinematic love letter to Tokyo, Lost In Translation (2003) is in the firing line this time round. And the boys have a jovial time dissecting the nuances between loving a film where hardly anything happens and loathing a film where hardly anything happens. The debate ebbs and flows from respecting the lesser plot and more on experiencing life. Why the exploration of theme is more fitting than the desire for revelation. Is the movie irresistible and the characters empathetic or is it irredeemable and the characters pathetic? Find out what's hot and what's not about LIT on another episode of Back to the Pictures...and remember, for relaxing times...make it Suntory times.
Mellow Greetings Fellow Citizens! Enhance your calm and be well...by downloading and enjoying our review of DEMOLITION MAN - the 1993 dystopian sci-fi action movie. Our first go around with the iconic Wesley Snipes & Sly Stallone! Join us as we dust off the three seashells, turn up the wall-to-wall mini-tunes, and devour those oh-so-sumptuous rat burgers. In this episode we dig deep into the cryo-prison system and it's bizarre theories on rehabilitation and parole. And we dig deeper still into the Scraps, the Cocteau Plan, alternative titles for the movie and speculate as to who else might be on ice during this time period...
A touchstone of the despicable, deplorable and degeneration of the time the BTTP crew grew up in. Is South Park the last bastion of equal opportunities offending left in this burnt out burgh we call society? Or is it a relic of a decayed era, now a stain on our more refined culture? Or is it a bit of both? We dive into 1999's South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut to pose these questions and so much more. And to rub Saddam's nipples while he tortures a familiar, muffle-voiced little piggy...

This time round, the Back to the Pictures lot focus on James Bond's return to the big screen and his reclaiming of the crown as the go-to in the espionage action genre. This Bond is different. Different then all those that came before him. Listen in as we breakdown what's changed, what's sharper, what's edgier and perhaps what still lingers from the past...this is not your dads James Bond...or is it? Not to mention an absurdly immature focus on THAT torture scene. You don't want to miss this one. Have your martini's at the ready. Just don't ask for them to be shaken or stirred. Because, seriously, does it look like anyone gives a damn?

If you weren't even supposed to be here today, suck it up, download this episode and lose yourself to the banter of Ben, Ian & Anthon joined by special guest Noah Jordan - this movies primary superfan. This week, the guys work their way through Kevin Smith's divisive, but undoubtedly seminal, 1994 indie classic - Clerks. It's a comedy as outrageous as it is incomparable. The first Smith film reviewed on Back to the Pictures (and surely not the last), the opinions are passionate, the banter is plentiful and the final score is heartbreaking. But as a wise man once said, one doesn't want to disturb things just so they can shit comfortably.

It's an ugly planet, a bug planet!Remember your training and you will make it back alive! Zegama Beach! Come on you apes, you wanna live forever? Medic! Take a trip down washout lane! Someone made a big goddamn mistake! The only good bug is a dead bug! You trying to be a hero Sgt? Just trying to kill some bugs sir! Service Guarantees Citizenship. At least I got to have you. Everybody fights, no one quits. Welcome to the Roughnecks. Rico's Roughnecks! Yeah, this is going to be a geek fest of an episode. Monster Bugs. Space Travel. Sci Fi Weapons. Psychics. Love triangles. Defying Gravity. Fascist rhetoric propaganda. It's all here. What more could you want from a review of 1997's Starship Troopers?Would you like to know more?
Join us for another showdown with Ben, Ian and Anthon and a genre rarely dipped into on Back to the Pictures. With only Hitch & The Girl Next Door for company, this time round, the romcom arena gladly receives 10 Things I Hate About You. Yes, the 1999 teen classic straight from the reimagining of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. This episode, BTTP Alumnus, Heath Ledger returns and is lauded upon (as necessary) and timeless Larry Miller is shown the proper respect as well. In fact, this film is chock full of BTTP alumni including JGL & David Krumholtz. The latter, of which, plays the terrifying genius, Michael, to much aplomb. Other questions answered include, has Bianca always been this selfish? And if so, why? How much did it really cost to have Letters for Cleo up the top of the building for that final iconic shot? And most importantly, did Nigel actually come through with the Brie??!

Well, this one hurts. Benthonian return for episode 2 of Season 3 to review a movie that has haunted them for nearly 20 years. In this super-heroic session, the guys come out swinging with the deepest philosophical questions from a painfully abstract movie - what's with the Emo hair & eyeliner? Why does Peter act like a dick even before he meets the Symbiote? What was Harry's plan blackmailing Mary Jane, anyway? Why does Eddie Brock feel like he's a sitcom character spliced into a summer blockbuster? And what oh what did the fucking butler see? This one hurts more than a pumpkin bomb to the face...and one you don't recover from within mere hours. All this and more when the BTTP crew reevaluate 2007's Spiderman 3!
We're back, back from the future! Or the past...or days of futures past?Either way, Back to the Pictures returns for Season 3 to once more take a stroll down movie memory lane...Ben, Ian & Anthon buckle up for another round of movies they once watched together as clueless uni students between 2005 & 2009. And episode 1 starts off with a big bang. Metaphorically speaking, of course, as the Shawshank Redemption is probably the most prestigious and filmic movie reviewed yet on BTTP! This episode, the boys once again turn to the Almighty himself, Morgan Freedman and his dulcet tones to narrate a tale of injustice, corruption, hope and ultimately, salvation. And The Kurgan.
We finally cover all the bases in the second and final part of our review of 1972's epic Mob Drama, The Godfather. In the final part of this instalment, the guys are ready for war on where this movie stands on their List of greatest movies. In the final episode of Season 2, we digest by just how far Sonny missed that punch to Carlo and continue our love letter to the Playstation 2 adaption of this very movie.Join us one last time, this season, for banter, Brando and of course, bollocks.
Time to make you an offer you can't refuse...In Part 1 of the final instalment of Back to the Pictures Season 2, the lads bring you one of their all-time favourites. And let's face it, it's a lot of peoples favourite! Let's see if the movie really does insist upon itself or if there is merit to calling it the greatest movie of all-time...Do we take the gun or the canolli ? Find out on BTTP!
Everything comes to he who waits...and we have waited since 1987 to bring you this review of Masters of the Universe. We are cheating ever-so-slightly this week. As this movie is one Ben and Ian have watched many times over together - so many, it's hard to remember if Anthon was ever in the room! Which makes for a unique episode, where our hosts battle the feel-good of nostalgia while being hit with the stark reality of just how bad a Cannon Films Alumni could be. We were all so innocent back then...what do our hosts think now of the baby-oiled Dolph Lundgren and the mind-numbingly redundant inclusion of Detective Lubic? And how one piece of dialogue actually renders the entire plot irrelevant. All this and more on the penultimate review of this season on Back to the Pictures.

You better be sure you wanna know what you wanna know...You don't wanna be scratching at the wrong door...But a bodies got a right to be curious...In this episode of Back to the Pictures, the lads tackle their most niche re-evaluation yet with the little-known, but unabashedly acclaimed, indie-noir classic Brick. Our crew dive into the murky world of Film Noir and encounter the genres living, breathing cliches - Femme Fatales, Brooding Detectives and Drug Lords and find them mashed together with their...what?! Teen drama counterparts? Yes, that's right e.g. Queen Bees, football jocks, loveable losers and brilliant-minded nerds. This episode is for the hardcore film lover. And as usual, perfect for the casual banter-loving podcast listener.
