Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up recap the Houston Astros defeating the Oakland Athletics 3-0 Wednesday at Minute Maid Park. The Astros have won three out of the four-game series against the A's and are on a four-game win streak. Framber Valdez started on the mound and threw seven scoreless innings. Seth Martinez pitched in the remaining innings to combine for a two-hit shutout. Cristian Javier will start on the mound Thursday for the final game of the series. Ronel Blanco was ejected before the start of the fourth inning Tuesday when the third base umpire found a foreign substance on his glove. Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins to discuss Blanco receiving a 10-game suspension. The NFL released the regular season schedule, and the Texans begin their season on the road against a division opponent in the Indianapolis Colts. Houston Chronicle writer Jonathan Alexander joins to preview the Texans primetime games.
Houston Chronicle writer Jonathan Alexander joins Next Up to review the regular season schedule for the Houston Texans. The defending AFC South champions will begin their season on the road against a division opponent in the Indianapolis Colts. The Texans first primetime game will come in week two against the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football. "They should be able to get out to a fast start," Alexander said. The Texans have a late bye in week 14, and then face the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens back-to-back-to-back. "It really gets difficult in that second half." The Texans host the Ravens on Christmas Day and the broadcast will be on Netflix.
Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins Next Up following the Astros defeating the Oakland Athletics 3-0 Wednesday at Minute Maid Park. The Astros have won three out of the four-game series against the A's and are on a four-game win streak. Framber Valdez started on the mound and threw seven scoreless innings. Seth Martinez pitched aided in last innings to combine for a two-hit shutout. The Astros got "Framber at his best," Bogusevic said. The Astros move to a 18-25 record and are 5.5 games back from the lead in the AL West. "It's still a deep hole to climb." Prior to the win streak, disgruntled fans were unhappy with the Astros slow start to the season, and first year manager Joe Espada was put to blame. However, Bogusevic values Espada's late-game decision-making. "It' all about matchups," and as a player, "you're looking for a sound approach to managing a game," and Espada has "inspired confidence" with his strategies. The Astros latest success against the A's is bittersweet because Ronel Blanco was ejected before the start of the fourth inning Tuesday when the third base umpire found a foreign substance on his glove. Blanco has since received a 10-game suspension. Bogusevic does not dispute that Blanco broke the rule, but pushes MLB to "make it more uniform" after similar instances around the league saw different results. "Enforcement creates a whole lot of grey area for something that should be black or white."
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up react to the Houston Astros winning 2-1 over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday with Victor Caratini hitting an RBI single in the 10th inning. Caratini recorded another walk off after smashing a game-ending homer as a pinch hitter on April 30. Alex Bregman began the second inning with another home run after hitting two the previous night. Starting pitcher Ronel Blanco was ejected before the start of the fourth after the third base umpire checked his glove and found a foreign substance. Blanco will likely face a 10-game suspension. Stan and Chris comment on the Texans hosting the Baltimore Ravens for a Christmas Day game to be featured on Netflix, review the Astros trading Corey Julks to the Chicago White Sox and more.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up recap the Houston Astros defeating the Oakland A's 9-2 in the first of a four-game series at Minute Maid Park. Third baseman Alex Bregman broke out of his recent slump, recording two homers and four RBIs. Spencer Arrighetti started on the mound and picked up his first Major League win, earning five strikeouts in five innings. The Rockets landed the No. 3 overall pick during the NBA draft lottery, making that four consecutive years the Rockets have a top-four pick in the draft. Ben DuBose, editor of The Rockets Wire, joins to discuss whether the Rockets will draft a prospect or trade away the pick for a veteran player. Stan and Chris talk with KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson about Texans rookie minicamp, congratulate Julia Morales of Space City Home Network for making MLB history and more.
Ben DuBose, editor of The Rockets Wire, joins Next Up to discuss the Houston Rockets landing the No. 3 overall pick during the NBA draft lottery. The pick comes from the Brooklyn Nets as a part of the 2021 deal for James Harden, while the Rockets' own pick goes to the Oklahoma City Thunder from the Russell Westbrook trade in 2019. As this is the fourth consecutive year that the Rockets have a top-four pick in the draft, "it's a good time to be a Rockets fan," DuBose said. Even though the Rockets saw a 19-win increase in their regular season record, they did not make the postseason, and DuBose says there are holes in shooting and defending that can be addressed with his pick. "You can always use more shooting," something that Kentucky Wildcats guard Reed Sheppard could provide, or a strong defender "who has a little bit of a different presence" than Alperen Şengün, such as UConn Huskies center Donovan Clingan.
KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson joins Next Up to recap the Houston Texans rookie minicamp. Texans draft picks took the field Friday and Saturday in their first practices as NFL players. Wilson also discusses the Texans trading for former Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Ben Skowronek, the competitive receiver group, the regular season schedule and a possible Nico Collins contract extension.
Chris Gordy of Next Up recaps the Houston Astros winning the weekend series 2-1 against the Detroit Tigers. Justin Verlander started on the mound Sunday in a 9-3 win and pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks while striking-out out eight. Verlander bounced back after allowing seven runs over five innings against the New York Yankees. Kyle Tucker hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to lead MLB with 13 home runs this season. The Astros are now 6.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners for the division lead and continue to get stronger as starting pitchers return from injury. However, Cristian Javier took the loss during his return to the mound on Saturday, and Jose Urquidy struck out three but allowed three runs on three hits and one walk over two innings in his first rehab start in Sugar Land. Spencer Arrighetti will start Monday as the Astros return to Minute Maid Park to host the Oakland A's. Chris also talks about the Rockets getting the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, reviews Texans rookie minicamp, comments on the NFL season opener and more.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up react to the Houston Texans trading for former Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Ben Skowronek. The Texans traded a 2026 sixth-round pick in exchange for Skowronek and a 2026 seventh-round pick. Skowronek is entering the last year of his contract and was expected to be released by the Rams, but instead, he will be joining Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, Tank Dell, John Metchie III, Noah Brown and Xavier Hutchinson. With special teams value and blocking skills, will Skowronek have an impactful role on the Texans roster? The Texans have agreed to terms with six draft picks and many of them are reporting to rookie minicamp, taking the practice field Friday and Saturday. Stan and Chris also recap the Astros avoiding the series sweep against the New York Yankees with a 4-3 victory Thursday. Yordan Alvarez and Jon Singleton homered in the first inning to give the Astros an early lead, and starting pitcher Ronel Blanco went into the sixth inning, giving up just two runs on four hits while striking out five. However, Ryan Pressly struggled in the eighth inning, forcing Josh Hader to pitch multiple innings and earn a save.

Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up discuss the Houston Astros losing four straight games after back-to-back defeats at the hands of the New York Yankees. Spencer Arrighetti started on the mound, pitching five innings in which he allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks. Kyle Tucker recorded another home run, but Alex Bregman has only two hits in his last 20 at-bats, and Yordan Alvarez went 0-5 at the plate last night in the 9-4 loss. Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins to preview the Astros attempting to avoid a series sweep tonight with Ronel Blanco starting on the mound. Stan and Chris compare Joe Espada and Dusty Baker, react to J.J. Watt's latest comments about NFL and NBA players switching sports and more.
Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins Next Up to recap the Houston Astros losing 9-4 on the road to the New York Yankees on Wednesday. The Astros lose back-to-back games at Yankee Stadium, extending their losing streak to four and drop to a 12-24 record. Spencer Arrighetti started on the mound, pitching five innings in which he allowed five runs on eights hits and three walks. Kyle Tucker recorded another home run, but Alex Bregman has only two hits in his last 20 at-bats and Yordan Alvarez went 0-5 at the plate last night. The biggest issue with the Astros is the "under-performance by players who should be doing better," Bogusevic said. As the Astros struggle early in the season, many have pointed blame towards first-year manager Joe Espada, but Bogusevic disagrees. "I don't see anything beyond a performance issue" from the players. "What would [another manager] come in and do?" J.P. France joined other starting pitchers on the injured list earlier in the week, but Cristian Javier is expected to return to the mound this weekend. If the Astros want to go on an extended-winning streak, "it probably starts with starting pitching."
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up recap the Houston Astros losing 10-3 to the New York Yankees in the series opener Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. Ace Justin Verlander had one of the worst starts of his Astros career after previously holding a 2.08 ERA through his first three starts of the season. The Yankees earned seven runs and three home runs against Verlander. Kyle Tucker recorded a home run, but Alex Bregman continued to struggle, going 0-4 at the plate and dropping his average to .195. The Yankees extend their season series lead over the Astros following a four-game sweep to start the year in Houston. Stan and Chris react to J.P. France joining the starting pitchers on the injured list, evaluate general manager Dana Brown's grade of the Astros season so far, discuss the Texans after their division opponent Tennessee Titans got stronger by signing wide receiver Tyler Boyd and more.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up react to former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt leaving the door open for a possible return to the NFL. At his annual charity softball game, Watt shared that he told head coach DeMeco Ryans that "if you ever do call, I'll be there" if the Texans "absolutely need it." Ryans responded at the Texans charity golf event, saying "I've got his number ready to go, just in case we need it." Are Watt and Ryans serious, or is it just a bit between former teammates? The Astros lost their three-game series against the Seattle Mariners 2-1 at Minute Maid Park. The back of the bullpen continued to struggle in a 5-4 loss on Sunday, leading to eight blown saves this season and a 12-22 record. The Astros are on the road for a three-game series against the Yankees starting Tuesday. Stan and Chris review the latest updates on Tank Dell's injury, sympathize with Stefon Diggs' trouble navigating Houston highways, celebrate Lance McCullers Jr. throwing bullpen and more.
Chris Gordy of Next Up recaps the Houston Astros losing 5-4 to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday to drop the series 2-1 at Minute Maid Park. Kyle Tucker and Jon Singleton both scored two-run home runs to give the Astros the lead heading into the eighth inning. Bryan Abreu hit the second batter he faced, committed a balk and then allowed an RBI single to tie the game. Josh Hader took over in the ninth and gave up a home run to Cal Raleigh. Hader has now allowed at least one run in six of his 15 appearances. The Astros have blown eight saves this season and move to a 12-22 record.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up recap the Houston Astros winning their second straight series following a 8-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday. The Astros took the three-game series 2-1 at Minute Maid Park. Prior to Tuesday's game, the Astros announced that first baseman Jose Abreu accepted an option to the spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Astros have lacked offensive production from the first base position to start the season; however, Jon Singleton recorded a three-run home run Tuesday and a two-run home run and three RBI Thursday, finally giving the Astros some quality at-bats from first base. Stan and Chris also talk about Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman struggling at the plate, Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs putting in work during the offseason, general manager Nick Caserio commenting on the draft, Milwaukee Bucks guard Patrick Beverley getting into it with fans and postgame media following elimination from the NBA playoffs and more.

The Guardians even the series with the Astros in back-to-back extra-inning games at Minute Maid Park. Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins to discuss Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez both going 0-4 at the plate and the Astros inability to execute in close games. Stan and Chris also discuss the Texans releasing their offseason workout schedule and predict what the regular season schedule will look like. Will the Chiefs host the Texans for the NFL season opener?
Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins Next Up to recap the Astros losing 3-2 against the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday. The Guardians even the series with the Astros in back-to-back extra inning games at Minute Maid Park. Ace Justin Verlander had a good outing for his third start of the season, pitching a season-high seven innings. However, the Astros have struggled with a "lack of execution in close games," Bogusevic said. Third baseman Alex Bregman went 0-4 at the plate, and Bogusevic says Bregman is "not comfortable with his swing being in the zone for very long." The Astros are 6.5 games back from first place in the America League West and are currently 10-20 on the season. "We have to start trying to win games now," because the Astros can't continue to drop in the standings. Yordan Alvarez was also 0-4 at the plate and has been in the lineup every game of the season so far. "There's just not enough depth in the lineup" to rest Alvarez, so "you need him everyday that he can be out there."
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up react to the Houston Astros defeating the Cleveland Guardians 10-9 ending with a two-run walk off home run from Victor Caratini in the 10th inning. The Astros win the first of a three-game home series against the Guardians and earn their first three-game win streak of the season. Hunter Brown started on the mound, striking out seven but allowing six runs on five hits and two walks in just over five innings of work. The Astros battled on the plate, with Joey Loperfido recording a two-run single in his MLB debut, and Alex Bregman and Jon Singleton both hitting three-run home runs for their first homers of the season. Justin Verlander will start on the mound for game two of the series Wednesday. Stan and Chris also discuss the Astros sending Jose Abreu to Florida for extended spring training, Texans wide receiver John Metchie III putting in work during the offseason, the University of Houston planning to wear alternate blue uniforms despite a cease and desist letter from the NFL and more.
