Description

Three Berserk fans (a writer-swordsman, a collectibles guru, and a musician-animephile) come together to break down Kentaro Miura's magnum opus, chapter, by chilling chapter. Ryan, Steve, and Joey discuss, critique, and expound on the themes, artwork, throughlines, and subtext found in this decades-long story of trauma, rage, ambition, and destiny. The story of Berserk - and this Berserk podcast - is not for the faint of heart - rated a hard R for sure!

Things get even darker, wetter, and more horrifying as our intrepid crew delve deeper into Qliphoth. Farnesse and Isidro gain some much needed confidence thanks to our old pal McGuts the Crime Struggler (80s kids will understand that obscure reference…maybe), and some very powerful beings emerge to both help and hinder our heroes: Slan, Skull Knight, and the essence of Darkness itself!
These trolls be gettin’ WET thanks to the ultra-powerful witch Schierke! Guts is breaking trauma cycles and showing kindness and respect to this magical youngster, while Isidro looks on in shame, feeling that he’s worthless to his new crew. We get even more tug of war between the classically religious and the magical/spiritual aspects of reality here as well, ending in a highly unexpected change in our resident annoying priest character. Oh, and Isidro gets his iconic sword! Oh the trolls they are a cummin'! Uuuuuh, COMIN', I meant, of course... Either way, we get even more fantastical, existential, and occult in these chapters, with the badass of badasses, Schierke, invoking the lords of the east, west, north and south to protect Guts and crew (as well as the villagers and that a-hole priest!) while they take out this horde of nasties...that is, until a giant peepee shaped Ogre enters the scene and puts a wrench in their gears. Enjoy!
We're getting a beefy-ass lore bomb in these chapters thanks to our new witch friends Schierke and her mistress Flora! What is the astral realm...the interstice...the Godhand...and the nature of Griffith's newly reincarnated powers? All of this is discussed in semi-mindbending detail - plus, Guts's JRPG party gets kitted out with magical weapons and armor for the journey to take out horrific trolls for Morgan, the boring NPC from the previous episode. Enjoy!
Schierke, baby!!! It's the official introduction of everyone's favorite little (and mega powerful) witch in training. Plus, Guts, Farnesse, Isidro, Serpico and the rest of the crew are forced to deal with an ever more "fairy tail-ish" world, fighting off vicious disgusting trolls, and adorable regenerating golems.
The Holy Evil War is getting ready to pop off, as we get a lot of world building from Griffith's apostle-infused side of the battle: He has giants, he has superpowered men, he has shadowy supernatural assassins, all set to...liberate Midland? He's trying to be the savior of the world, using his powers of The Prince of Longing to make his new subjects fall in love with him. Also, Farnesse has another existential crisis, but this one is full of hope and acceptance as she navigates her new purpose in life, and, for now, leaves the despair behind her.
This should be a given for Berserk, but these chapters get dark, tragic, and disturbing. Sadly, it’s our beautiful, but flawed boy, Berk, himself, who is the perpetrator of this messed up stuff. But it’s not that simple! Much to discuss here as the Beast of Darkness begins to take its hold on old Gutsy, causing him to wrestle with (and largely lose against) his deepest desires…resulting in the simple minded, traumatized Casca to recoil from him as a villain for the foreseeable future. In this surprisingly beefy episode, we cover three chapters that are short on pages but overflowing with meaty meat goo inside for you to sip on for almost three hours. Griffith’s war demons begin to make their pilgrimage to him, including first appearances of the fire-breathing Grunbeld and the mysterious Rakshas. The real meat of tonight’s meat goo treat is the origin stories of Serpico (more like Slurp-ico. YUM.) and Farnesse’s (I wish she was Close-nesse. YUM.) origin story: a tale of parental abandonment and trauma, chaotic eroticism, possible incest, and animal torture. Enjoy! Griffith...is...back. But Griffith don't GOT back, because we know he still retains his little flat buns despite his divine reincarnation into non-astral flesh. Zodd is his big ridin' pony, he saves Casca (surprising even unto himself), and starts amassing a crew against a major Kushan attack against Midland. Ah yes: Puck determines Guts' and crew's ultimate destination for about the next fifteen years of publishing.
A day late and a dude short - Steve won't be joining this episode but Ryan is back from his excursion to the land of the rising sun for this episode, where we discuss the aftermath of the Birth Ceremony chapter, the reincarnation of Griffith himself, and the fantastical ramifications of the unifying of the astral plane and the mortal plane that was brought about by the re-embodiment of our favorite femboy psychopath.
The penultimate chapters of the BIRTH CEREMONY sub-arc of Berserk are here. Who is being re-born in the Egg of the Perfect World? How will Father Mozgus, with his impenetrable skin, ever be defeated by our intrepid here: Berk-Boy? How could Nina get any more insufferable and annoying? All is revealed in this Ryan-less episode. He’s having a great time in the land of Guts himself: Japan! We're back...again...as usual! We catch up with Guts and crew in the ongoing battle with Father Mozgus - now with 100% more angel wings than ever before! Enjoy!
Ryan is alive and well and ready to talk about the Egg of the Perfect World, a super-powered Mozgus and his crew of be-winged torturers ready to burn Casca at the stake, and Luca being pulled into the Egg's inner sanctum where it reveals the saddest autobiography of all time and it's plan to bring about a perfect world by sacrificing...something...
Sorry for ANOTHER late podcast! Ryan is sick and we got behind on all of our content as I adjust to life with a newborn and finals in my master's program, so thanks for your patience and understanding <3
We’re back after Joey’s podcast paternity leave! These chapters move like water through a nude Griffith’s bucket - action, intrigue, thrills they’ve got it all…and a sick duel between Guts and Serpico on a two foot wide cliff! Plus, a tissue-melting blood monster bursts out of the very walls of Father Mozgus’ torture chamber. What more could you want from old Berk and the boys? Hey! Joey's baby boy came a few weeks early, so we very much appreciate your patience for the new episode, which will be coming next week!
It’s been quite a while, both in the original timeline of readers of the Berserk Manga, and in the lives of the characters themselves, that Guts and Casca have been in the same room with each other. Unfortunately…Casca is trapped in a room where a pagan cult is hosting a “naked party” where she will be forced to “mingle” with a half-man/half-goat demon creature with a snake boner. On a more touching note, however, Isidro and Guts’ casual bro bond also grows in these chapters, where Guts is slowly starting to realize that, ultimately, to truly defy causality and destroy the Godhand some day…he won’t be able to do it alone. Farnesse…makes a mess. And we get some flashback segments that explain why. Isidro begins to share the spotlight as he tags along with Guts, and we get a major exposition/lore drop from Skull Knight about the nature of the upcoming “Festival” that just might be mimicking The Eclipse so that a certain Hawk-like figure can incarnate in flesh where there was once only incorporeal consciousness giving him form in the astral realm. Plus, Nina still sucks. Hard.
Who ever thought a Guts-free set of chapters could be so compelling?! Not us, but we were plum surprised. These chapters are setting the stage for major future events in ways we never realized on previous reads of the series. Everyone's favorite character Nina gets introduced, and we learn a lot more about Mozgus, his torturers, Luca and her colleagues, and the seemingly protective power of the Demon Infant with Casca (aka "Elaine"). Ooooooh...and a pretty pornographic orgy happening as well.
WE'RE F**CKING BACK!!! First appearances of Isidro (!), Luca, and the Bloody Scripture himself...Father Mozgus!
