In this episode I have the pleasure of talking with David VanEpps about his book that I would highly recommend titled, “In Our Weakness We Are Strong”.There is so much information in this little book that we had to split this episode into two parts. In this first section, we get to know who Dave is and how he came to a saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. We also learn his life was like before that life changing decision, and how God has used him since then. He tells why he wrote the book, and we discuss the true definition of winning, the importance of being thankful, and many more lessons he’s learned while training for, and racing in, his first few endurance events. I really enjoyed talking with Dave. In this episode we share a comeback story unlike any other we’ve discussed on this show. Well, to call it a comeback is to do a disservice to the journey that our guest has been on. On February 16th of this year, FCA Endurance Teammate, father of nine, and a husband to one for 34 years, and age group All American Bill Deaton hopped on his bike for another training ride. But it wasn’t just another training ride. Bill had planned to ride 25 miles - something he had done hundreds of times before, in his attempt to once again podium at the next race in his age group.  But this ride did not end well for Bill - no, far from it. The story I’m about to share is one that every cyclist dreads - and unfortunately, one that happens far too often. Maybe it happened to someone you know. Maybe it happened to you. It reminds me of the old saying: That there are two kinds of cyclists, those who have crashed, and those who will. And of those who will, the worst scenario generally involves a car, with getting hit by a truck being at the height of the severity scale. Yet that is exactly what happened to Bill. It is his prayer and hope that his story glorifies God and encourages you. Kelly is a USAT, RRCA certified coach and owner of Fillnow Coaching. Kelly has racked up very impressive statistics during her stellar running and triathlon career, and it all started when she discovered a love for running which positioned her to lead Davidson College to their first ever Southern Conference title. After graduating from Davidson with honors, Kelly ran for Duke University, who was then #1 in the nation in Cross Country. After graduating, Kelly stumbled into triathlon and finished 3rd in her very first attempt. She went on to win her first half ironman, and then she qualified for the Hawaii Ironman World Championships. As an amateur, she finished on the podium in her two Ironman World Championship appearances, became a Duathlon Age Group National and World Champion, and set an American amateur Ironman record in her third Ironman in 9:29:49. As a professional triathlete, Kelly has placed as high as 3rd in both the 70.3 and Ironman distances. After tearing her ACL/meniscus while cheering for her athletes at a race, she came back stronger than ever due to tremendous grit, work, and dedication. As part of her comeback, she PR’d in every distance from the Olympic to the Ironman in 2021. In 2022, she went on to compete in all three Ironman and 70.3 world championships at the professional level, finishing as high as 15th in the world.  Today, Kelly is passionate about helping people achieve their dreams and discovering the greatness within them. As part of Fillnow Coaching, she has coached a National Age Group Champion, World Championship qualifiers, World Championship podium athletes, amateur Ironman and 70.3 champions, and helped athletes who could not run more than two minutes to crossing marathon finish lines. She believes anyone can reach beyond what they dare to dream through consistent hard work and self-efficacy.  You are sure to be edified during this next hour or so as Kelly shares with us how Christ has been faithful through the highs and lows of her life, including an amazing professional triathlon career, her successful coaching business, and family life, teaching her to not to doubt, but to trust in Him. Sit back, buckle up, and listen in as we have the privilege of talking once again with Barry Edwards.  Barry has a tremendous triathlon record, with over 70 Ironman appearances under his belt - seven 70.3 World Championships, and two full Ironman World Championships, and as of the Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga a few months back, Barry has had seven first place Ironman age group victories in the past 12 months or so. His next challenge will be his third full Ironman World Championship appearance next Month in Kona on October 26th, where his goal is to once again stand on the top step of the podium in his age group. Barry talks about training, nutrition, time management, and focusing on Christ as the center and purpose of it all, so if you are looking to be inspired, this episode is for you.
