Description

So I once got homework assignment from an expert in my field saying, "You need to watch better movies." So... I started watching a new movie each week that's among the greatest movies of all time. And then with the lovely Mariah (and sometimes Pat) we chat about it. The podcast is called "How To Be A Movie Snob." We don't expect much from it but we are having a blast recording it and hanging out each week. So if you get bored and want to hear us spread our lack of knowledge on some of the best movies ever filmed, come join us on our journey to becoming movie snobs!

In this episode of How To Be A Movie Snob, we dive into Hamnet and the emotional experience of watching it. This is the kind of film that doesn’t just tell a story—it lingers with you long after the credits roll.We talk about the incredible performances, the overwhelming emotional impact of the film, and why this might already be entering the awards conversation. Could Jessie Buckley be headed for Best Actress recognition? And are there other categories where Hamnet could show up when awards season arrives?More than anything, we discuss why this movie hits so deeply and why it left us thinking—and feeling—long after it ended.#Hamnet #FilmPodcast #MovieReview #Oscars #AwardsSeason #JessieBuckley #HowToBeAMovieSnob #FilmDiscussion
https://thealabamasolution.comIn this episode of How To Be A Movie Snob, we dive into the Oscar-nominated short documentary The Alabama Solution and discuss why it completely blew us away. From powerful storytelling to its unflinching look at the juvenile justice system, this documentary left a huge impression on us.We break down what makes the film so effective, how it uses real footage and interviews to tell its story, and why it stands out among recent documentary shorts. Is this one of the most impactful short documentaries in years? We think it might be.If you care about great filmmaking, meaningful documentaries, and the films getting attention during awards season, this is an episode you won’t want to miss.#TheAlabamaSolution #Documentary #OscarNominated #DocumentaryFilm #FilmDiscussion #MoviePodcast #HowToBeAMovieSnob #FilmPodcast #ShortDocumentary #MovieReview #FilmAnalysis
Another Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Yorogos Collab! And it may be the weirdest one yet. This week on How To Be A Movie Snob, we’re diving into the delightfully unhinged chaos of Bugonia — an English-language remake of Save the Green Planet! from director Jang Joon-hwan.The film follows two young men who become convinced that a high-powered CEO isn’t just corrupt — she’s an alien plotting the destruction of Earth. Naturally, they do the only reasonable thing: kidnap her and attempt to save humanity.Dark, absurd, and teetering between satire and psychological meltdown, this remake takes a cult classic and asks: what happens when paranoia, capitalism, and sci-fi conspiracy collide? Is it brilliant? Is it bonkers? Is it both?MB014UUJJDFDMAI

This week we’re reviewing Sentimental Value and making the case for why it might be the most movie-snob Oscar pick of the year. It’s not flashy, it’s not loud, and it definitely doesn’t explain itself—but that’s exactly why it works.
Brad Pit in a car. What more do you need? In this episode of How To Be A Movie Snob, we unpack our genuine surprise at F1 the Movie landing an Oscar nomination. Is this a sign the Academy is finally embracing blockbuster craft? A technical nod that actually makes sense? Or are we officially in our “anything can happen” era of Oscars? We break down what the nomination means, whether it’s deserved, and what this says about the current state of awards season—all with our usual mix of attempted snobbery, skepticism, and our growing love for filmmaking..
This year's nominations had a lot of what we expected but a few big surprises! Check out the HTBAMS team's reactions to this year's Academy Awards Nominations. #awards #oscarwatch #oscars #oscarnominations #moivepodcast #howtobeamoviesnob
Wicked for Good… or Wicked for Okay? The HTBAMS crew is back in Oz, and we have questions. In this episode, Mariah breaks down the key differences between Wicked the book, the Broadway play, and the film adaptation Wicked for Good—what changed, what stayed, and what maybe shouldn’t have made the jump at all. Seth spends the episode asking the important (and occasionally baffled) questions about why certain creative decisions were made, while Pat chimes in with thoughtful insight, context, and just enough restraint to keep things grounded. Is Wicked for Good a worthy finale? Is it chasing Oscar glory?Or is it… simply Wicked for Okay? We’re talking adaptation choices, performances, themes, and whether movie magic really captured Broadway magic—or just borrowed its broomstick.🎬 How To Be A Movie Snob brings the side-eye, the nuance, and the notes.#WickedForGood#WickedForOkay#WickedMovie#MovieMusicals#FilmAdaptation#BroadwayToFilm#OscarWatch#MovieReview#HTBAMS#HowToBeAMovieSnob
It’s official — we’ve made it to the big leagues. This was our very first official screener! We had the privilege of watching Reedland, the Dutch entry for Best International Feature Film. Written and directed by the incredibly talented Sven Bresser, the film offers a hauntingly beautiful look into the world of reed farmers in the Netherlands. Variety calls it an “outstanding slow-burn thriller,” and honestly… they’re not wrong. So come hang with the crew as we dive into this visual feast straight out of Holland.
Oscar Watch 2026 Continues! This week we watched the beautiful Train Dreams. Train Dreams is a film directed by Clint Bentley, based on Denis Johnson's novella, starring Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker in the early 20th-century Pacific Northwest. This movie also stars William H. Macy, Felicity Jones, and Kerry Condon. Cinematography by the talented Adolpho Veloso.
The HTBAMS crew — Seth, Mariah & Pat — return for another Oscar Watch installment, this time breaking down Guillermo del Toro’s sweeping and emotional new adaptation of Frankenstein (2025). With Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Creature, this version blends gothic beauty, emotional devastation, and that classic del Toro craftsmanship that tends to make voters pay attention.
