Baby Jesus is out. About 30 minutes before we hit record, word came down that Malachi Toney needs ankle surgery, and now the No. 1 Miami Hurricanes go to South Bend on Saturday night without their best player. The line jumped to seven and a half. The mood took a hit. Somebody had to take a canoe to Pollo Tropical.Ro, Jenners, Scoop and Toast work through what this offense looks like without Toney: more Cooper Barkate, more Elijah Lofton, maybe a coming-out party for a freshman the way Toney had against Notre Dame last year. We also get to the uncomfortable truth that losing Darian Mensah would have been worse. Then the CFP rankings. The committee told the ACC it's getting one team in, Wake Forest got done dirty, and the guys argue over whether Notre Dame is closer to 4 or 11.The big one is the defense. We play Bill Belichick's comments after the 38-35 win at UNC, where he basically says Carolina knew everything Corey Hetherman was going to call because it's the same stuff Miami has run since Week 1. Toast does not take it well. Ro answers with three specific fixes: lay off the simulated pressure fronts, drop the cut mechanics, and rethink the 3-by-1 looks now that Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor are gone. Also in this one: the 1988 CBS open with a young Brent Musburger (30 seconds on Notre Dame, 10 on Miami), a shout-out to Andrew Novak on his first solo PGA Tour win, the Notre Dame podcast that called Miami "unintelligent thugs" and then wiped itself off the internet, player over/unders, keys to the game, and the FSU coaching search. Manny Diaz? Jimbo again? And why Miami's money picture looks nothing like Tallahassee's.We close with picks on a stacked Saturday slate: BYU-Utah, Texas-Mizzou, Alabama-LSU, Oregon-Ohio State, Kentucky-Tennessee, Georgia-Ole Miss, and our final scores for Miami at Notre Dame. Toast may or may not be wearing a pope hat.Recap show drops Sunday morning. Miami is 8-0, and nobody on this show is celebrating. The No. 1 Hurricanes went to Chapel Hill and got out with a 38-35 win over North Carolina, and the morning after, Ro, Scoop and Toast are trying to figure out how a secondary full of four-star talent got carved up like that.UNC went 8-for-11 on third down, 2-for-2 on fourth down and 5-for-5 in the red zone, all touchdowns. Their quarterback put up his best passing night in years, and the Belichick and Petrino game plan kept finding guys wide open by stealing stuff other teams already hit Miami with: the Florida State screen, the Stanford tight end spacing look, and a lot of motion against simulated pressure. Ro goes through what he saw on the Skycast and has one message for Corey Hetherman. You're a fastball guy. It's time to learn a changeup. Be like Pedro. The guys also get into the onside kick re-dos at the end (and why every other fan base is mad about it), a hands team that never touched the ball, and whether Miami was good or just lucky. Scoop has the Canes losing 11 of 12 rounds and winning the fight on one big right hand from Malachi Toney and Darian Mensah. Mark Fletcher found the end zone three times, and one of the guys wants full credit for calling it.Plus: Hate Week is here with Notre Dame in primetime on NBC, a smoke detector that would not stop chirping, scores from around the country, how everybody's over/unders cashed, the playoff math if Miami drops one, Wake Forest's run since losing to the Canes, a Belichick stat you have to hear to believe, and the FSU timeline after a 72-yard run on third-and-14.Fix your face. Miami is 7-0 and No. 1 in the country. North Carolina has also beaten the Canes five straight times. Ro, Jenners, Scoop and Toast deal with both of those facts on Episode 504 of the Orange Bowl Boys.Mario Cristobal flat out refused to let a reporter say the words "Notre Dame" this week, and the guys loved every second of it. Bill Belichick, on the other hand, could not stop talking about Malachi Toney. That sets up the big question of the week: if the Heisman were handed out tomorrow, does it go to Toney or Darian Mensah? We also go through where Toney already sits in the Miami record book a year and a half into his career, and how his numbers line up with Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith.Heather Dinich floated a two-loss Miami playoff scenario on ESPN, and it did not go over well in this room. Then the guys get into whether Miami should leave the ACC and go independent with a streaming deal, and fire back at the USA Today column telling the Canes to be careful what they wish for. After that it's game prep for Saturday night in Chapel Hill. We look at what the UNC defense gives up, set five (okay, six) over/unders for Mensah, Toney, Mark Fletcher Jr. and the defense, and each of us gives three keys to the game. Picks against the spread for Florida-Georgia, Northwestern at Oregon, Clemson at Florida State and Ohio State at USC close it out, along with our final score predictions for Miami at North Carolina. Also in this one: Chase Daniel's "Cocktober," the goblet of wine that got the better of Toast, and why you can shake the delivery guy's hand with no pants on.Go Canes.00:00 Episode 504: Miami Is 7-0 and Still Cursed by UNC01:16 Wine Goblets, Chicken Parm and Tupperware Parties04:18 Mario Won't Say "Notre Dame"07:54 Belichick Can't Stop Talking About Malachi Toney11:19 Heisman Debate: Malachi Toney vs. Darian Mensah14:17 Toney's Run at the Miami Record Book18:46 Heather Dinich's CFP Chaos Scenario20:27 Should Miami Go Independent?25:13 Firing Back at USA Today's "Easy Path" Take27:17 Chase Daniel and "Cocktober"28:34 Paul Bange Roofing and Rapid Auto Lease31:43 Beating the Bookie Update33:23 Miami at North Carolina Preview36:37 Over/Unders for UNC Week39:44 Keys to the Game45:29 College Football Picks Against the Spread52:20 Final Score Predictions: Miami at UNC53:21 Episode Title Picks and WrapFollow OBB:Website: orangebowlboys.comTwitter/X: @OrangeBowlBoysInstagram: @OrangeBowlBoys Roofing issues? Miami answered the "are they really No. 1?" crowd the best way they could. A week after the double-overtime grind against Florida State, the Canes went out and beat Pitt 52-23 in a game that was never close. And that 23 should have been 16, but we'll get to the busted coverage.Ro, Scoop, Toast and Jenners recap the win that puts Miami at 7-0 and 5-0 in the ACC. Malachi Toney had 12 catches in the first half and finished with 16 for 194 yards and three touchdowns, a new school record for receptions in a game. Scoop gets quizzed on who held it before, and the answer takes everybody back to the Harley to the U days. Darian Mensah went 31-of-37 for 387 yards and four scores, but one throw that got dropped and flipped the momentum for a few minutes turns into a full argument that nobody wins.We also get into the running back rotation. Is Mallory the real 1A behind this offensive line, and where does that leave Mark Fletcher Jr.? Plus Jordan Lyle running angry, the early sacks against Pat Narduzzi's front, and the one thing keeping this from being a generational Miami defense: a secondary that still can't find the ball in the air. Then the fun stuff. The throwback jerseys and the 2001 national title team's 25-year reunion at halftime, why the Adidas pants don't fit anybody, how our prop bets did, and a bold call for Halloween night in Chapel Hill against Bill Belichick and North Carolina before the trip to Notre Dame. We close with scores from around college football and the Saturday night games worth staying up for.The North Carolina preview drops Thursday. For the first time since 2002, the Miami Hurricanes are the No. 1 team in the country, and the boys have been waiting 24 years to say it out loud. Ro, Jenners, Scoop and Toast argue over whether a midseason ranking actually means anything (Mario says no trophies get handed out in October), and Ro makes the case that none of this happened by accident. Five years of recruiting, rebuilding and getting punched in the face got Miami here, and now a whole generation of kids gets to see the U on top.Jenners reports back from Atlanta sports radio, where every Georgia loss somehow turned into a conversation about Miami's schedule. That leads to the NIL tweet that blew up, Ro calling the SEC the college Karens, and a check on the Top 25 (Utah, who have you played?). We also hear Mario on the Joe Rose Show, Mark Fletcher giving all the credit to Javion Mallory after the Florida State win, and our friend Josh Pray having a full meltdown about Miami being No. 1.Then it's on to Pitt. Pat Narduzzi is running his mouth again about Mario and the transfer portal, and the guys break down how you beat a Narduzzi defense that loads the box: play action, shots downfield and maybe, just once, a running back screen. Plus the forecast that's calling for a soaked noon kickoff at Hard Rock, the O-line stunt problem from last week, over/unders for Mensah, Toney and Mallory, keys to the game, pick 'em standings, this week's picks and score predictions.
