“Thinking Inside the Box – The Gauntlet” brings you interviews with the United States Army’s experts in combined arms maneuver, the Observer Coach Trainers (OC/Ts) of Operations Group, at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California.
Host, Capt. Seth Revetta sits down with Observer, Coach, Trainers from the Goldminer and Wagoneer Teams to discuss Dispersion of Sustainment. As explained in FM 3.0, pp. 1-5, the likelihood of the enemy force’s use of massed long-range fires and weapons of mass destruction increases during large-scale combat operations—particularly against command and control (C2) and sustainment nodes, assembly areas, and critical infrastructure. To survive and operate against massed long-range fires and in contaminated environments, commanders ensure as much dispersion as tactically prudent.
Lt. Col. Octavia Davis, the Senior Logistics Trainer; Maj. Boyce Newton, the Brigade Support Battalion Executive Officer and Staff Trainer; Maj. Sarah Barron, the Brigade Support Battalion Principal Staff Officer Trainer; and Maj. Kenneth Slaton, the Combat/Division Sustainment Support Battalion Principal Staff Officer Trainer informs Brigade Combat Team level leaders of the changes and challenges facing a rear-area support elements and provides some guidance on what they can do to limit friction points and increase survivability.

“Thinking Inside the Box” brings you interviews with the United States Army’s experts in combined arms maneuver, the Observer Coach Trainers (OC/Ts) of Operations Group, at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California.
In this episode, the Aviation Observer, Coach / Trainers discuss an impact of replicating envisioned distances of the next fight with current Forward Arming and Refueling Point doctrine. Of note, the Eagle Team has observed several Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures that Rotational Training Units are employing at the National Training Center to increase survivability. Different units have executed Forward Arming and Refueling Areas, a concept that goes beyond doctrine. Maj. Jake Rykken, CW3 Ed Smith, and Sgt. First Class Anthony Nice provide observations, considerations, and a discussion on risk to compare employing a Forward Arming and Refueling Point or a Forward Arming and Refueling Area.

“Thinking Inside the Box” brings you interviews with the United States Army’s experts in combined arms maneuver, the Observer Coach Trainers (OC/Ts) of Operations Group, at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California.
In this Episode we discuss Command Post Survivability in modern warfare. For years, Army command posts have grown in size as they attempt to maximize situational awareness. They have been consolidating staff, collecting liaison officers, adding monitors for power point presentation, and upgrading additional equipment allowing for the fight to be displayed in real time. With the spread of drones and signal detecting equipment, command posts have become easier to detect and have become larger targets.
To get more insights on the topic Maj. Robert Rose interviewed Maj. Steven Pyles, Operations Group coach for operations officers and Capt. Seth Revetta, Operations Group coach for signal officers. They dive deeper into some of the recent articles, doctrinal publications, and best practices to help assist in the command post survivability.

In this Episode, we talk about the Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL). CALL’s mission is to lead the Army Lessons Learned Program and deliver timely and relevant information to resolve gaps, enhance readiness, and inform modernization. CALL is essential to the Army as an institution. They focus on adaptive learning, based on lessons and best practices, and provide timely and relevant knowledge to the warfighter.
To get more insights on the topic we interviewed Mr. Kevin Kreie, Operations Group, NTC Senior Analyst for CALL. Learn how CALL, at The National Training Center collects observations from the Observer, Coach / Trainers, analyzes that data and then produces reports, articles, handbooks, and other media that help units learn from each other as they prepare to go to a Combat Training Center. Kevin shares some of the best NTC publications and where to find this information.

In this Episode we discuss Proactive Counterfire in a large-scale combat operation. Proactive counterfire, as defined in ATP 3-09.12, is the specific targeting of enemy indirect fire systems including their C2, sensors, platforms, and logistics before they engage friendly forces. Proactive counterfire is a focus area for units as they train in the box at the National Training Center. “Thinking Inside the Box” brings you interviews with the United States Army’s experts in combined arms maneuver, the Observer Coach Trainers (OC/Ts) of Operations Group, at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California.
While the Army focused on counterinsurgency, we had the luxury of taking time to make decisions, but large-scale combat operations will not afford this indulgence. Appropriately delegating decision-making authority allows leaders closer to a problem to make decentralized, rapid decisions rooted in the principles of mission command. Codifying who can make decisions prevents staff and subordinates waiting on a time sensitive action, because they are not sure if they are empowered to take action. Thinking through delegating decisions before arriving at the National Training Center will produce payoffs for commanders who understand when and where they must be present to make the essential decisions they can make. By defining who can make decisions, units will understand the systems needed to support making those decisions in various command posts, allowing effective dispersion of command posts to increase survivability. To discuss how to delegate decision making, we interviewed two members of our Bronco Team, our senior brigade trainer, LTC Adam Latham, and our senior Judge Advocate trainer, MAJ Timothy Davis.
