Have you ever had difficulty communicating your feelings or needs with your partner, family, or friends? Being able to Describe the situation, Express how you feel, Assert your needs, and Reinforce your needs through the conversation. All while being Mindful about being on topic, Assertive, and confident in yourself, and being open to Negotioning with the other person to assure both are having their needs met to a satisfactory place. In part IV of having hard conversations, Dr. Emerald, DC & Katherine Garcia, LPC share a critical communication skill called Dear Man. A skill that over time can help you to grow your communication skills with the people around you.
In part 3 of having hard conversations Dr. Emerald & Kat discuss tools to implement in your life to assist in navigating conversations with the people around you. Kat explains how to use the feedback loop also called the listener-speaker exercise which was created by Drs. Gottman & Gottman to help couples communicate effectively.
When experiencing stress during a conversation how do you respond? Do you have the urge to run away, dig in and fight it out, or do you feel like you freeze up? In part II of having hard conversations, Dr. Emerald & Kat Garcia discuss the "Fight, Flight, or Freeze" response during difficult conversations along with creating safe spaces. Dr. Emerald & Kat discuss how people and their Nervous Systems can react differently to hard conversations. Kat also lays the groundwork of why even when we create a safe space for someone, they still may not feel safe and how to navigate those hurdles to be able to have hard conversations to help them stay conversations and not turn into confrontations.
The reality is we have to have hard conversations in all parts of our lives, not just in our relationships. In episode 3 of Painting Wellness, Dr. Emerald & Kat discuss the feelings we can have in our bodies when having a hard conversation. What do these different areas of sensation mean and what insight can we draw from them? Kat also walks you and Dr. Emerald through how to use "I Statements" during conversations to help those discussions stay conversations and not a confrontation.
