Director Frances Lawrence and screenwriter J.T. Mollner's adaptation of Stephen King's "The Long Walk" has been Scotty's most anticipated movie of 2025. So he invited his buddy Amelia Ampuero--the co-host of his other podcast, The Weirdest Thing--back onto the show to talk about it. Scotty gives a quick rundown of the book's history (along with the lore behind the Richard Bachman pen name) before the two dive into their respective reactions to the film. How did Scotty think it held up to King's nihilistic teenage first novel? How did Amelia--a newcomer to the story--respond to this dark mirror of America? Listen and find out! WARNING: This is a SPOILER HEAVY episode for both the book and the movie. Scotty also drops a big spoiler for Frank Darabont's 2007 adaptation of King's "The Mist." So be warned. Listen to Scotty and Amelia "yap" (not "yack") on The Weirdest Thing Podcast. Happy "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" Week everybody! Come celebrate with Scotty and New Mexico luminary Chad Brummett. Chad is, of course, the noon anchor for Albuquerque's KRQE News 13. He's also a celebrated actor in movies like "3:10 to Yuma" and TV shows like "Longmire," as well as a regional Emmy-winning documentarian for the series "Legendary New Mexico." And he's a massive horror fan! Scotty and Chad first met 21-years ago while making the short film "Something Red," which was Scotty's first solo outing as a director and his tribute to "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." On this episode, Scotty and Chad talk about the process of making that short film, and then they wax poetic about Tobe Hooper's grindhouse classic. This is just two old friends geeking out about a movie they love. Enjoy! Jeremy Wagner

Jeremy Wagner

2025-06-2701:51:27

Author and musician Jeremy Wagner comes onto the podcast to talk to Scotty about his years as guitarist and lyricist for the seminal death-metal band Broken Hope (also known as the band that broke Scotty's body back in '97), as well as his career as a horror writer with the popular novels "The Armageddon Chord," "Rabid Heart," and the upcoming "Wretch" (look for it in October from Dead Sky Publishing). Jeremy talks about influences as disparate as Peter Benchley's original "Jaws" (1974) and the songwriting of Slayer's Jeff Hanneman, and how they--along with his interest in history, mythology, and the brutality of death metal--helped form his unique sensibility. He and Scotty discuss the development of his own conversational writing style, the importance of specific teachers and mentors throughout his career, and more. Jeremy also talks about his relationship with chef Curtis Duffy of famed Chicago restaurants Grace and Ever and how that friendship led to their upcoming collaboration "Fireproof: Memoir of a Chef," which will arrive in August from Dead Sky Publishing. This week Jeff and Bethany Stedden join Scotty to talk about creating New Mexico's one and only dedicated horror festival, the Morgue & Krypt Horror Fest. They discuss growing up as a pair of lonely horror geeks in the Albuquerque region, traveling to fan fests throughout the greater Southwest, and how doing so inspired them to start their own event here at home. They describe the challenges of organizing a festival--from the logistics of raising money, contacting guests, finding venues, and even figuring out parking for attendees--to the fun stuff of coming up with unique features and helping to build a dedicated and thriving community of "505" horror fans. Boston-bestie Mandy Connor returns to talk about four movies. She and Scotty start with the best of the bunch: the truly frightening 2024 Irish mystery-horror film "Oddity," by writer/director Damian Mc Carthy and featuring a standout performance from Carolyn Bracken. They then shift gears with 2020's oddball but impressive indie psychological drama/sci-fi horror movie "Horse Girl," directed by the late Jeff Baena and co-written by star Alison Brie. Things take a marked turn for the worse with this year's "Until Dawn," a severely undercooked and trope-heavy adaptation of the beloved PlayStation game. They finish off with the promising (but ultimately disappointing) "Heretic" (2024), starring Hugh Grant, Chloe East, and Sophie Thatcher, and written/directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Scotty and Mandy also give some love to the recent trailer for "The Long Walk," and Mandy sings the praises of "Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made" (2018). WARNING: Scotty and Mandy tried to avoid major spoilers for most of the movies discussed, but you should proceed with caution nonetheless. To be honest, they didn't try all that hard for "Until Dawn." For the very first time, Scotty is simultaneously releasing the most recent episode of his other podcast, "The Weirdest Thing," as a bonus episode in the "Horror From the High Desert" feed! He and his cohost Amelia Ampuero take a deep dive into the new Prohibition-era vampire movie "Sinners," starring Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, and Wunmi Mosaku, and written/directed by Ryan Coogler. It should be no surprise that they both absolutely LOVED this one. WARNING: Spoilers abound in this episode! In the first half of this two-part episode, author Rae Wilde ("Merciless Waters," I Do Not Apologize For My Position on Men") returns to talk about her upcoming novella "I Can Fix Her" (June 3, CLASH Books). They discuss the terror of "nightmare logic," Rae's interest in exploring toxic sapphic romance, the "Wilde Test" (i.e. decentering men altogether as significant drivers of plot in narrative), the unique lure of obsession, and the hazards of power in relationships. Rae and Scotty also dive into an impromptu conversation about Darren Aronofsky's divisive 2017 psychological horror film "mother!" In the second half, Scotty welcomes Albuquerque-based actor Peter Diseth ("Roswell, New Mexico," "Better Call Saul") to talk about his performance as Jorg in the new satirical horror film "Opus" (2025), starring Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Juliette Lewis, and written/directed by newcomer Mark Anthony Green. Aside from discussing his experience on the film itself, they spend a few minutes on Peter's background in the New Mexico film and theatre scene, explore the fine line between comedy and horror, and consider the trend towards "the horror of politeness" in film like "Opus," "The Invitation" (2015), "Speak No Evil" (2022), and "The Menu" (2022). Author Sam Rebelein returns to the podcast, this time to talk to Scotty about his upcoming collection of interlinked stories, "The Poorly Made and Other Things" (February 11, William Morrow Paperbacks), which are all set in the same fictional upstate New York county as his debut novel "Edenville" (2023, William Morrow). Sam and Scotty discuss his process in creating the ever-expanding "Rebel-verse," his influences from R.L. Stine to HBO's "The Leftovers," the horrific possibilities of "illogic" in fiction, what it means to tap into elemental fears as a horror writer, and more. Sam and Scotty also talk about the surprisingly nasty (and diabolically fun) 2019 anthology horror film ""The Mortuary Collection" (Shudder).
